SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
A Message from the Pastor…
Last weekend (February 13/14)
presented a considerable challenge to our
facilities and staff. There were so many
events/programs going on for parishioners
of all ages that our meeting space and
resources were pretty much taxed to the
limit. Screens, projectors, and laptops
seemed to be needed in every corner of our campus. As we were
preparing to meet the challenges of a busy weekend (beyond the
normal six Masses!), the anxiety level tends to rise a bit.
But as I watched various staff members try to work things
out for the best possible outcome, I was pleased to see the
collaborative efforts – people making compromises or adaptations
for the good of the whole. Even more, as Pastor, I was pleased that
this “problem” comes about because we offer so many enriching
events and programs for the people of our parish. The constant
challenge of finding meeting space daily for all the various groups
and ministries, meeting here each week, is evidence that our parish
is very much alive!
I don’t say it nearly enough – but I am so grateful to the
outstanding staff which we have here at St. Joe’s. I am the
“upfront” person or the one whose name is at the top of the bulletin,
but the Lord’s ministry, which happens here day in and day out,
is made possible by the competent, capable and tireless men and
women who comprise our staff, and all the hundreds of volunteers
whom they help to empower in dozens of ministries at St. Joe’s.
Thanks to you all!
+++++
Last Sunday, our Catechumens and Candidates were
presented to Bishop Thomas at Rosary Cathedral in the Rite of
the Elect. After many months of prayer, study and reflection these
men and women are in the final stages of preparation for the Easter
Sacraments and becoming fully initiated members of the Catholic
Church. Please continue to keep them in your prayers.
Have a blessed week.
Msgr. Dennis Metzger
Little Sisters of the Poor
Annual Collection, February 27/28.
The mission of the Little Sisters of the Poor is...“To share their
lives with the needy elderly, offering them a home where they
may find rest and refreshment as they journey towards eternal life
in the Father’s house.”
Please be generous to the Little Sisters of the Poor this weekend.
The cost for caring for the Elderly in a manner respectful of their
dignity far exceeds the income received from the Residents;
pensions, Social Security, Medicaid and other government funding.
To cover the constant deficit, they rely on your generosity.
If you miss the collection, you may mail your donation directly to:
The Little Sisters of the Poor, Sacred Heart Home, 930 S. Wynn
Road, Oregon, OH 43616-3599.
FEBRUARY 21, 2016
Faith Basics 101 –
A Lenten series
with Father Ritter on Thursday evenings that
began February 11th.
The next sessions are:
March 3 – The Church (You’re not an only
child!)
March 10 –Religion and Politics have to
mix.
March 17 – A spirituality for a secular world.
Thursday nights from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., in the East Campus.
Registration would be helpful, but is not mandatory. Cadll 419885-5791.
Evening Prayer during Lent
Vespers (Evening Prayer)
will take place in Church on:
Monday evenings –
February 22 and 29, and
March 14 and 21, from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m.
“All parishioners are invited to this public prayer as a way of
preparing us, during Lent, to renew our Baptism at Easter.” The
rhythm and pattern of this prayer, the singing of the Psalms and
the images presented in the Scripture readings can help enrich
our Lenten journey.”
Vespers is one of the prayers of The Liturgy of the Hours – the
public prayer of the Church for praising God and sanctifying the
day. All Catholics are called to this prayer – please join us as we
give thanks for the blessings of the day!
During the Lenten season in this special Jubilee Year of
Mercy, parishes throughout the Diocese are extending special,
additional opportunities for celebrating the Sacrament of Penance.
There are two parts to this effort:
(1) – “24 Hours for the Lord,” which will take place in each
Deanery in the Diocese on March 4th and 5th. In each Deanery,
there will be a special location where priests will be available
for Penance from 5:00 p.m. until Midnight on Friday, March 4th
and again from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5th.
During these times, the Blessed Sacrament will also be exposed
for prayer. In our Deanery, the Friday times will be at Holy Trinity
Parish in Assumption, and the Saturday times will be here at St.
Joseph in Sylvania.
(2) – On each of the three Wednesdays following the
“24 Hours for the Lord,” there will be an effort to have Priest
Confessors available in every parish, between 11:00 a.m. and
1:00 p.m., and again, between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. Those dates are
March 9, 16 and 23.
Because of all these special opportunities to celebrate
the Sacrament of Penance during Lent, and the special times
on the first three days of Holy Week which we will again offer
here at St. Joseph, there will be no parish Penance Service this
Lent.

40 Days for Life Campaign Began
February 10
Catholic Charities is hosting a 40 Days for Life campaign in
northwest Ohio from February 10 through March 20. You can
participate in three ways: prayer and fasting, community outreach
and peaceful vigil. We invite you to pray for an hour in front of
Capital Care Network, the Toledo abortion clinic, located at 1160 W.
Sylvania Avenue. Sign up at www.40daysforlife.com/toledo. Since
the international 40 Days for Life Campaign began in 2007, over
675,000 volunteers in over 32 nations have stood in prayerful witness
at abortion clinics to witness to the dignity of human life. Through
these prayerful campaigns, over 11,165 lives have been saved, 127
abortion workers have quit their positions, and 64 abortion facilities
have shut down! To learn more, email Peter Range at prange@
toledodiocese.org. Join the movement, and help us end abortion in
northwest Ohio!
SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
FEBRUARY 21, 2016
Kindergarten Information Night – On Tuesday, March 1,
from 7:00-8:00 p.m., there will be an informational meeting for families
who are undecided about Kindergarten enrollment for the 2016-2017
school year. Registration forms will be available, as well as Kindergarten teachers and other members of our
staff to answer questions and accept paperwork. We ask for an RSVP for the Information Night to Mrs. Juli
Snyder at jsnyder@stjoesylvania.org or 419-882-6670. Please note that if you are considering St. Joseph School
for your incoming Kindergartner, the Kindergarten Screening Test will be given in early April.
Science Fair 2016 – Middle school students participating in the Science Fair elective class presented their projects before judges on
Tuesday, February 9. We are pleased to announce that eight students received a rating of “Superior” and two received a rating of “Excellent.”
Congratulations to Dina Angel, Molly Forgach, Grant Leslie, Devin Maynard, Tiare Nicholas-Bublick,
Ryan Snyder, Skylar Tiell, Lucas Wawrzyniak, Raphael Yazji, and Jacob Ziegler, for their outstanding efforts!
Students who received a superior rating will move forward with their projects and present at the Northwest Ohio
District Science Day at the University of Toledo on Saturday, March 5.
Parent Testimonial: “Any educator will tell you that success in high school and beyond comes not just from
the knowledge and skills students acquired in grade school but at least as much from their “habits of mind”
or “dispositions to learning.” It’s easy to think of these dispositions, such as curiosity or engagement, as
simply aspects of personality or as qualities children learn primarily at home, but surely they must be taught
and nurtured at school as well. Our family has seen them taught and nurtured at St. Joe’s day after day. The
students live and breathe them.”
“Little Carpenters” –
St. Joseph Parish Play Group, Wednesdays, from
10:00-11:00 a.m., East Campus, Media Center
This group is for kids 0-5 years old accompanied by a parent,
guardian, grandparent or caregiver. All parishioners and friends
of St. Joseph Parish are welcome! There is no fee to participate.

separated or divorced, as a way of assisting
one through the healing process. This ten-week
series covers the following topics: shock, denial,

staying single, and much more. Whether you
were divorced ten days or ten years ago, the program offers valuable insight for everyone.
During the sessions, there is time to talk with others who have experienced similar
problems – and the program offers a blending of study, reflection, discussion, and
socialization.
It will be held in the East Meeting Rooms (and at times in the Media Center), from
6:45-9:00 p.m. on Thursdays.

From Joanne Denyer, Pastoral Associate...
At the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday,
February 14th, the catechumens and
candidates in the Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults celebrated the “Rite of
Sending.” This is the second liturgical rite
in the process of becoming fully initiated
Catholic Christians. In this rite, the candidates were presented to
the community. Their sponsors affirmed their intent and readiness,
and they were “sent” to the Bishop who encouraged them to
continue to deepen their faith and love of Jesus Christ.
In the afternoon, the catechumens and candidates attended
the “Rite of Election” and “Call to Continuing Conversion” at the
Cathedral. They will either be baptized (and/or) complete their
Sacraments of Initiation, or come into full Communion with the
Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil on March 26th.

Lenten Day of
Reflection
The Respect Life Ministry held a
Lenten Day of Reflection Saturday,
February 6th. Over 45 parishioners
attended this event. The theme
of the day was “Seek the Face of
Christ.” Our reflection for the day
was: “How do we follow Christ?
The answer: By Seeking the Face
of Christ in others.”
At the end of the day, we each
completed a Lenten Commitment Card which contains our Lenten
commitment to support the Dignity of Life.
Starting today through Passion Sunday, you will find a cross in
the narthex containing these cards. Complete your own Lenten
Commitment Card and attach it to the cross to show your support
for life and begin your Lenten journey. On Passion Sunday, all of
these cards and prayers will be carried forward with the gifts of
the Church and placed on the altar.
The program begins with lunch at 11:30 a.m.
with the speaker to follow. The program will be held in the East
Campus Meeting Rooms. The cost is $5.00. A reservation form
can be found at the bottom of this page, the racks at church, or the
