Arts&Events MOUNTAIN VIEW VOICE The secret is told FLO OY WONG’S CSMA EXHIBIT TELLS STORY OF SELF-SUPPRESSION BY CHINESE IMMIGRANTS By Kelly Truong lo Oy Wong grew up with secrets. As the daughter of immigrants who moved to the United States under the Chinese Exclusion Act, she and an her family remained silent for years ye on one subject: their mother. “No one could have written a script as strange as my mother’s immigrant story,” Wong said. sto Under the Chinese Exclusion Act, Wong’s mother could not come to the W United States as the wife of her husUn band. Instead, Wong’s father bought ba false fal identity papers that declared her as his sister, allowing her to move to the th country with their daughters. The Th family had to carry on the charade so far that Wong’s mother ch married another man in order to m give giv her children a “real” father in the th eyes of the law. “When we were growing up in “W Chinatown, that was our secret,” Ch said sa Wong, who grew up in Oakland. “We didn’t talk about Oa it for f 50 years.” Wong tells the tale now in “My Mother’s Baggage,” a mixed media piece that uses suitcases as chapters in the story of her mother’s arrival in the United States. The piece F is part of her “Raising the Voices” exhibition, currently tly on display at the Commumunity School of Music and Arts through Nov. 26. The piece focuses on one personal story amongst what Wong sees as an entire history tory of Chinese people’s self-supsuppression during their immigragration to the States. “The chalhallenges they went through were really painful, and they learned rned to hide them,” she said. “We sweep them under the rug.”” Like Wong’s other works, orks, “My Mother’s Baggage” serves erves a simple function: it sheds light on that which has been swept under the rug, showing the world the humanity of those who, o, for a time, lived under false pretenses tenses or false identities. A centerpiece of her collection ection is a work entitled “My Sister: ster: Li Hong,” which honors Wong’s developmentally disabled sister. The piece is striking at a glance, consisting of a dress-like form draped with rice sacks, photos and personally significant details from her sister’s life. For instance, the work includes knitting needles and crotchet hooks, a moving symbol of her sister’s devotion to her children despite her disability. The “St(art)er Home” exhibit was the work of 15 artists who are members of the group “Sezio.” When a friend of the group decided to demolish the 850-squarefoot house for a rebuild, the artists were allowed to come in and use it as their personal canvas. On Oct. 11 and 12 the house was open to the public. The artists even threw a party the first day, complete with DJ and drinks. Nearly every wall was covered with ornate pieces. Even the toilet was decorated with buttons by Jack Tse, and for the tub Debra Valdez WONG Continued from page 29 “She could not walk her children to school, she could not take them to soccer games and ballet lessons,” said Wong. “What she could do was knit pencil holders.” The process of crafting the piece was a deeply personal one — not only for Wong, but for the family members she invited to help honor her sister through art. Wong said it was very important to have her relatives in the studio, helping out in whatever way they could. Creating the work together painted a mural with plant-like figures with human heads. Artist Eric Taggart chipped the sheetrock on one wall into the shape of the U.S.A. Strips of duct tape appear to mend the damage. The house was scheduled to be torn down in late October. A photo tour is posted at www. sezio.org. V Left: Artist Joe Perez and his children explore the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party exhibit he created at the St(art)er Home. Wong describes one particular moment in the studio while she was playing Chinese opera music from her sister’s childhood: “When she heard the opera music, she gutturally cried and laughed at the same time,” she said. Wong could tell that her sister was trying to communicate. “She looked at me,” she said. “It awakened something in her.” V E-mail Kelly Truong at ktruong@mv-voice.com ■ I N F O R M AT I O N WHAT: “Raising the Voices,” an exhibition by Flo Oy Wong WHERE: Community School of Music and Arts’ Mohr Gallery, 230 San Antonio Circle, Mountain View WHEN: Through Nov. 26; the gallery is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. PRICE: Free INFO: See www.arts4all.org or contact Mohr Gallery curator Linda Covello at (650) 917-6800, ext 306 or lcovello@arts4all.org 3FDFOUNFSHFSTNBZIBWFZPVMPPLJOHforBOFXCBOL*GB GBNJMJBSGBDFJTNPSFBQQFBMJOHUPZPVUIBOBNFSSZHPSPVOE PGiQFSTPOBMCBOLFSTwHJWFPOFPGVTBDBMM #BOLJOHoXFUBLFJUQFSTPOBMMZ ǼǽǾ4Ġ4BO"OUPOJP3PBE-PT"MUPT$"Ȃǽǹǻǻ ǿǾǹȂǺȀǽǿǹǹ]XXXCPSFMDPN .FNCFSPG#PTUPO1SJWBUF8FBMUI.BOBHFNFOU(SPVQ .FNCFS'%*$ 4 "/ . BODY OF LIES ✭✭✭ (Century 16, Century 20) Entrenched CIA operative Roger Ferris (Leonardo DiCaprio) travels from Iraq to Jordan to hunt down violent fundamentalist Al-Saleem (Alon Abutbul), who is eager to punish infidels in the name of Allah. Ferris’ superior in the U.S. is pompous Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe). Ferris connects with Jordan security chief Hani (British actor Mark Strong) to help keep tabs on a terrorist safehouse. Hani, too, is anxious to bring down Al-Saleem, but his methods strike a contrast to those of Ferris: Torture is fair game in Hani’s eyes and deceit is an unforgivable offense. Rated: R for strong violence including some torture, and for language. 2 hours, 8 minutes. — T.H. BURN AFTER READING ✭✭✭1/2 (Century 16, Century 20) Osborne Cox (John Malkovich) is a CIA analyst fired for a “drinking problem,” at which point he comes unglued. His wife, Katie (Tilda Swinton), feels no pain as she’s with U.S. Federal Marshal Harry Pfarrer (George Clooney) on the side. Linda Litzke (Frances McDormand) frets over her insurance company’s unwillingness to pay for cosmetic surgery. Hyperactive trainer Chad Feldheimer (Brad Pitt) is her shoulder to cry on. Opportunity knocks when a Hardbodies employee finds a CD of Osborne’s tell-all memoirs. Believing they’ve struck gold, Chad and Linda attempt to blackmail him. Rated: R for pervasive language, sexual content and violence. A taut 1 hour, 31 minutes. — J.A. NICK AND NORAH’S INFINITE PLAYLIST ✭✭1/2 (Century 16, Century 20) Michael Cera is the titular Nick, a high school senior trying to recover from the dumping received at the hands (and heart) of Tris (Alexis Dziena). About the time that Nick is burning Tris another volume of his agonizing break-up mix (aptly titled “Closures”), pals corral him into a night on the town to seek out elusive underground band Where’s Fluffy, whose members are dropping baffling clues all over Manhattan. At one such indie rock haunt Nick meets Norah (Kat Dennings), a brainy frenemy of Tris’ and head squire in best friend Caroline’s (Ari Graynor) quest for maximum attention. Rated: PG-13 for language and mature themes. 1 hour, 30 minutes. — J.A. RACHEL GETTING MARRIED ✭✭✭✭ (Guild) Kym Buckman (Anne Hathaway) has been sprung from rehab into the Weekend cozy custody of casa Buckman for her sister Rachel’s (Rosemarie DeWitt) impending nuptials. Nine months clean but ever the narcissist, Kym stakes out the arcane rituals of matrimony as a breeding ground for her scathing wit and edgy indictments of family and friends. Director Jonathon Demme’s low-budget style perfectly complements the aura of adoration and self-loathing. Rated: R for language, drug use and adult situations. 1 hour, 54 minutes.J.A. THE DUCHESS ✭✭1/2 (CineArts, Century 20) “Duchess” is classic Keira Knightley, the mostly true story of Georgiana Spencer, a charming extrovert who made an abysmal match to the wealthy and powerful 18th-century aristocrat the Duke of Devonshire (Ralph Fiennes). The success of “Duchess” relies on energetic chemistry between Knightley and Fiennes, but it’s much ado about nothing. Rated: PG-13 for language, action violence and mature themes. 2 hours, 32 minutes. — J.A. Wrap your windows for the holidays. THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES ✭✭1/2 (Century 16, Century 20) Sue Monk Kidd’s heart-wrenching novel gets the big-screen treatment. The Civil Rights Act has just been signed and the climate in the South between blacks and whites is anxious. For young Lily (Dakota Fanning), the new regime has implications as she has to run from an abusive dad (Paul Bettany) with black housekeeper Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson). The two land at the home of the sisters Boatwright (Queen Latifah, Alicia Keyes and Sophie Okenedo), and then it’s all about the sisterhood. “Bees” has sweet moments and first-rate performances. The script, though is packed with chestnuts. Rated: PG-13 for adult themes and some violence. 1 hour, 50 minutes. — J.A. Weird, wacky ‘W.’ By Jeanne Aufmuth O liver Stone’s scathing indictment of the 43rd president of the United States seems more like an “SNL” sketch than a thought-provoking biopic, but it’s no less entertaining as a result. Josh Brolin nails George W. Bush to the wall as an alcoholic party boy with lifelong daddy issues. From his privileged days at Yale as a Delta Kappa brother to a series of missteps in professional sports, oil drilling and investment, George is far more interested in chasing tail and procuring his next beer than engaging in the family business. George lives in the shadow of straight-shooting brother Jeb who’s cut from the same cloth as George Sr. — smart, sincere and perpetually on the political arc. Junior sees politics as a “kick-ass, skull-crushing war” and evidently goes that route — running for governor of Texas — as a slap in the face to Jeb’s campaign for Florida’s top spot. But when W. becomes born again in a world of wounded sinners — not to mention eschewing the drink once and for all — his call to the presidency becomes part of a divine plan. A legend in his own mind. Yes he’s “misunderestimated,” and in the hands of Stone a dimwit loser with no grasp of foreign policy. Much is made of the war in Iraq; some of the film’s most disquieting confirmations spring from agitated group sessions in the situation room. The trouble with “W.” is that it’s a retread of the last eight years — not much we don’t already know here. Luckily W’s public and private gaffes are vastly amusing. More sinister is his hodgepodge core of groupies: Karl Rove (Toby Jones) slithering around the shadowy perimeter like a reptile (I shuddered when he boasted of being a “lifelong student of political horseflesh”), a bumbling Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (Scott Glenn) who can’t perceive up from down, and a conflicted Colin Powell (Jeffrey Wright) who stands alone as the voice of military prudence shot down amidst power-mongers and yes-men. Laura gets the bimbo treatment by fresh-faced Elizabeth Banks, and daddy is played to patriarchal perfection by James Cromwell. Best of show go to Richard Dreyfuss as VP Dick Cheney (scary!) and a frighteningly dead-on impersonation of Condoleezza Rice by English beauty Thandie Newton. Stone knows presidential biopics — think “JFK” and “Nixon” — but “W.” isn’t as accomplished as those projects, nor as wickedly complex. There’s an unfinished feeling to this trepidatious tale of our current commander in chief — “history lite,” if you will. Rumor has it the film was rushed into production to beat the November election, and it shows: a slapdash affair with just enough damning evidence and melodramatic style to make it work.
