TREASURES?
t doesn’t take a financial expert to figure out that we live in increasingly
troublesome times. The economic woes of the world weigh heavily
on the minds of anyone who dares to ponder the implications of
the tangled monetary web that has snared us all. As the experts
pontificate on the “hows, ifs and whens” concerning the possibilities
of a world-wide financial collapse, how shall we as Christians prepare
for the certainty that is poised to engulf us?
In the Sermon of the Mount, as recorded in Matthew’s Gospel
chapter 6 verses 19 to 21, Jesus stated, “Lay not up for yourselves
treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where
thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in
heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do
not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your
heart be also.”
As you look at the crazy world around you, what is going on
in your heart? Do you find yourself more concerned with preparing
for the coming financial failure than with the coming of Jesus Christ
to rule and reign over the whole world? If you take your direction
from the World of Man, your heart will be filled with fear. But, if you
take your direction from the Word of God, you heart will be filled
with faith.

For those of us who live in the developed
world, it’s hard for us to imagine being truly
hungry; let alone standing by helplessly as our

stomachs. Yet, we have witnessed soaring food
prices and starvation often in modern times – both
in the third world and also in developed nations.
We saw it happen repeatedly early in the
20th Century:

In 1921 Poland, food prices doubled every 19 days.
In 1923 Germany, they doubled every four days.
In 1944 Greece, they doubled every four days.
In 1946 Hungary, food prices doubled every 15 hours.
We’ve also seen government-engineered famines more recently:
In 1982 Mexico, the inflation rate hit 10,000%,
driving the price of food up 100 times in 12 months.
In 1989 Argentina, the Peso was devalued three times,
driving food prices up 3,079% in a single year.
In 1994 Brazil, inflation raged at 2,075.8% per year,
making food more than 20 times more expensive.
In 1994 Yugoslavia, food prices doubled every 34 hours.
And in 2008 Zimbabwe, they doubled every single day.

Hyperinflation
The best-documented hyperinflationary episode in history is
the one that nearly destroyed Germany between 1922 and 1923.
The German government began printing unbacked paper marks –
first, to finance World War I and later, to pay war reparations. By late
1923, 300 paper mills and 2,000 printing presses worked around the
clock cranking out German banknotes.
The human toll was devastating: On average, prices doubled every
three days. In a single month, prices exploded more than 32,000%
higher -- enough to drive prices up by a factor of 320 in a single,
30-day period.

These crises were entirely man-made.
Their nation’s leaders made
them by creating
unbacked paper
marks out of thin air. So what does this have to do
with you and me in today’s world?
Quite simply, everything!
You see, Germany sank into the most severe
hyperinflationary period in recorded history after
printing 1.3 trillion marks. That translates to
about 4 trillion in today’s dollars.
Ironically, that is almost exactly the same amount
of money the United States government has printed
since 2008.

But that’s only the tip of the iceberg because:
• The European Union has printed 503 billion euros – equal to
about 627 billion dollars.
• Japan has printed 180 trillion yen, equal to about $1.5 trillion.
• The UK has printed 314 billion pounds, equal to about
$493 billion. Altogether, that’s well over $6 trillion.

And despite the fact that most of that money is still being held
on bank balance sheets and has yet to trickle into the economy,
food prices are already beginning to rise rapidly.
Flour prices are up 19% … ice cream is up 21% … rice and
cheddar cheese are both up 27% … chicken is up 34% … oranges are
up 70% … and hamburger meat is up a whopping 74%.
And this is only the beginning. Because that trickle of newly
printed money flowing into the economy will fast become a flood.
As the rest of it hits food prices, they can only explode higher with
no end in sight. Inflation Isn’t the Only Problem.

The food problem is affected by many different factors even after
you take into account inflation, war, unrest, disease and weather.
Here are at least five major concerns not covered above that food
producers and suppliers must also deal with:
1)Limited arable land – land that has the needed nutrients and
water to sustain crops.
2)Crop yield ratios – crop yields seem to be plateauing or are
increasing considerably slower than the population.
3)Growing population – many experts expect the planet to add
another 2 billion people in the next 35 years.
4)Changing diets in emerging markets – developing countries
are demanding more and better foods.
5)Bio-fuel demand – crops to supply cheaper and cleaner fuels
continue to take precedent over food crops.
Bayes’ Theorem
It can be useful to exploit a technique that goes by several names
including “causal inference” or “inverse probability” -- based on a
mathematical equation called Bayes’ Theorem. Basically, you form a
hypothesis based on experience, common sense and whatever data

are available. Then you test the hypothesis not by what has happened
before, but by what comes after.
Instead of reasoning from cause to effect, you reverse the process.
You watch the effects to determine the cause. This will validate or
invalidate the ‘cause’ which you have hypothesized. Sometimes, the
effects contradict the hypothesis, in which case you can modify it or
adopt another. Often, the effects confirm the hypothesis, in which
case you know you’re on the right track and keep going.
The theorem has proved its worth, such as in 2012 when it was
used to successfully predict the outcome of the U.S. presidential
election in all 50 states before the final vote counts were available.
Despite its success it has always been regarded with some suspicion by
statisticians particularly because it has been used when genuine prior
data is unavailable or uncertain.
Bad Debts
Prof. Laurence Kotlikoff,1 (a widely accepted expert) using CBO
figures estimates that the U.S. national indebtedness is $222 trillion
at last count, and growing. That’s $17 trillion current, national debt,
plus over $200 trillion unfunded

To put that in perspective,

gap is 11 % larger than all the accumulated wealth existing in the
world today!
That’s almost $500,000 for every man, woman, and child.

Using the language of Bayes’ Theorem, bad debts will be the
“cause” of a drop in financial stocks. What are the other “effects”
to test the validity of these hypotheses?
For energy junk debt, we can look at rig counts in the oil patch
and layoffs among energy exploration companies. For emergingmarket debt, we can look at the strong dollar and dwindling hard
currency reserves in countries like Russia, Turkey, Mexico and Brazil.
In short, we can work backward from these visible causes to test the
validity of the original hypothesis.
Right now, the idea that financial stocks will suffer major writeoffs by this time next year looks like a good one.
If it were only so simple. Stocks may rise much higher before
a crisis hits. If no fed rate increase this year comes true, it could be
extremely bullish for U.S. equity markets. Right now, equity markets
are priced for a rate hike in mid-2015. When markets realize that
easy-money policies could continue into 2016, another upward thrust
of the bull market would commence, and a level of 2,200 or higher
on the S&P 500 index would not be surprising.

The Age of Deceit at Work
Not wanting to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but it seems
almost no one has connected the dots between Yellen2 and Draghi,3
and most seem to assume that they each operate independently.
However, some suggest that the rapid rise of the dollar is being
allowed because it is part of the “plan” to save the Eurozone and
hold back the inevitable U.S. rate increases. The under-the-counter
payoffs allow corporations to continue to buy back shares and
increase dividends by borrowing at near-zero rates forever -- clearly
visible in the bank’s celebratory “stress test” announcements. Whether
this game ends in a massive economic collapse or the establishment
of Special Drawing Rights is not important, as either will result in
the same outcome for the world’s 95% -- economic disaster and
enslavement.
This was also underlined with CNBC’s celebration of 500,000
newly minted American millionaires -- establishing 5% of American
households with assets greater than $1 million, (while CNBC failed to
report that American families living in poverty have increased to 35%.)

This does seem to speak of a real destruction of America’s moral
political leadership.
One way to approach the “Age of Deceit” is to establish your own
prior probabilities to trigger your own “tests.”

the Justice Department has quietly turned into a choke point over the
past couple of years. What the government describes as an initiative
to confront fraudulent activity serves as a way of closing “questionable
businesses”.
Representative Darrell Issa (CA-49) exposes what the Justice
Department considers questionable businesses during a congressional
hearing, part of which can be seen at the link below.3 Among the
questionable businesses4 attached to the subpoenas are:
• Ammunition Sales
• Coin Dealers
• Firearms Sales
• Fireworks Sales
• Home-Based Charities
• Life-Time Memberships
• Pharmaceutical Sales
• Tobacco Sales
So, there we have it. Nobody wants fraud. The government has
investigatory powers and processes. Every business needs a bank.
Banks are traditionally risk-adverse. So, the government investigation
of the banks – complete with subpoenas and signatures – induces
the banks to terminate some or all banking services with these
questionable (or is that code for merely “objectionable”) clients.
By closing customer accounts – customers accused of no wrongdoing
and not even necessarily directly under an investigation for any
possible infractions – banks (understandably perhaps) avoid any
unwanted entanglements with the government. Never! Won’t happen!

PayPal to see why I was not able to activate the Business Pro section
of the process, I was told that they ‘could not offer that service due
to [my] line of work’ and that I should contact my website’s domain
provider to see if they could help find another type of service.”5
The article continues with O’Connor identifying other impediments
faced in her search for similar services which “led to lost revenue
and slower growth for the company and, if continued, could put
us out of business.” O’Connor maintains, “We are not a fraudulent
business, but clearly the Department of Justice is not going after only
fraudulent businesses with Operation Choke Point, as they purport.”

The Washington Times says this letter “effectively ends
Operation Choke Point.” As reported by Forbes, “a change in the
political landscape, many businesses threatening legal action and a
congressman with a background in banking [forced] the bureaucracy
to admit to misconduct and to stop financial attacks on legal
businesses that the Obama administration deems to be politically
incorrect.”6

Whether Mark Twain or somebody else deserves credit for its
authorship, the phrase is familiar to our ears. “The reports of my
death has been greatly exaggerated.” This applies to the previous
and premature obituary for Operation Choke Point. During the
first half of March 2015 – a scant two months after its purported
demise - the Department of Justice reported settlements with two
more banks, settlements which resulted from Operation Choke Point
investigations. “This case arose from our investigations into consumer
fraud at banks, payment processors and fraudulent merchants, which
have been dubbed Operation Choke Point,”7 said an unnamed
Justice Department spokeswoman concerning one of the cases
involving a bank in California. As of March (the writing of this
article) the number of successful settlements for Operation Choke
Point has increased from two to… three!8 How many businesses have
been diminished or destroyed by this withdrawal of banking services,
ones we will never hear about? Hawkins Guns of Wisconsin is one
you can read about.9
In mid-2014, the House of Representatives voted to defund
Operation Choke Point, an unsuccessful measure. In March 2015,
U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer, (R-Mo.) reintroduced legislation to

put an end to this effort. “Operation Choke Point is an organized
attempt by the administration, the FDIC and the Department of
Justice to bully and intimidate financial institutions so they won’t
offer financial services to certain licensed, legally operating industries
the government doesn’t like in an attempt to choke off those
industries from our country’s banking system. The program has been
in effect for a few years now, but it has gone into overdrive within the
past year,” Luetkemeyer wrote.10

Jesus’ admonition to His disciples remains as relevant today as
it was two thousand years ago. As the sons of Issachar were credited
for “understanding the times” in which they lived and as ambassadors
of the King who seek to represent Him in these days, we benefit by
being aware, by paying attention and by staying alert. Operation
Choke Point has political, constitutional even ministerial implications
as we confirm our callings 2 Peter 1:10 and are equipped for the work
of the ministry Ephesians 4:12. But that is another article for
another time.

MIND RENEWAL?
L
ast week, The King’s High Way, invited a wonderful group of ladies
to come to our beautiful facility and participate in a time of
refreshing in the Word. As a body of believers we shared and
encouraged one another in the faith. The theme “heavenly
perspective” was on the hearts and minds of almost every woman
who came.
Learning to see from God’s perspective is vital for the times
we are living in. Because then we’ll be able to “soar” above our
circumstances, our problems, and our trials and not get buried under
them. The below article on mind renewal gives the “how to” of
understanding and getting God’s perspective. This article came out
of Nancy’s book, “Be Ye Transformed”.
To be living in these times is remarkable. Knowledge has
increased, not only in the secular world, but also in the spiritual
world. The Lord is the Teacher, and if we are seeking Him as our first
love, He will teach us.
Some of the greatest pastors and teachers are alive today.
And I believe Nancy is one of them. I pray this article blesses
and encourages you to get a “heavenly perspective”.

hat Is Mind Renewal & Why Is It So Important?
Romans 12:1-2 tells us that the way
we are “transformed,” the way we learn
to live Christ’s Life, is by the renewing
of our minds - putting off our own negative and
corrupt thinking and putting on God’s Thoughts.
As we continue in our series on being transformed
by the renewing of our minds, we want to cover
two important questions. 1) What is “mind
renewal?”and, 2) Why is “mind renewal”
so important?
Ephesians 4:22-24 exhorts us to “... put off
concerning the former conversation (behavior) the
old man (old self ), which is corrupt according to the
deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your
mind; and that ye put on the new man (the new
self ), which after God is created in righteousness
and true holiness.”

A “renewed mind,” then, is one that has done two things: It has
“put off” any sin (any hurt, doubt, fear, rebellion, self-centeredness,
lust, bitterness, etc.), any corrupt thinking, or any barrier that would
quench God’s Spirit and has “put on” the Mind of Christ
(2 Corinthians 10:5).
Renewing our minds is not simply “changing” our thoughts, but
actually putting off the old, negative thoughts as well as putting on
God’s Thoughts. In other words, we can’t just say to God, “Lord, give
me Your Thoughts,” and somehow

Hal Lindsey points out that “to renew” means to exchange one
thing for another. In other words, when we put off and put on, we’re
exchanging our thinking for God’s. If we’re not willing to yield, set
aside and relinquish our own thoughts, however, then our thinking
process will never be renewed and our lives will never be transformed.
Reasons Mind Renewal Is So Important
There are many reasons why “mind renewal” is critical. But there
are several reasons worth pointing out in this series: God wants us
to have His Mind (His thoughts, His viewpoint) in every situation.
He wants us to have the supernatural ability to discern everything
that happens to us from His vantage point and His perspective,
and not get bogged down and buried by our own negative thoughts
and feelings or by what we can “see” going on.
A Perfect Example
Joseph in the Old Testament, I believe, is a wonderful example
of someone who was able to see all that happened to him from God’s
perspective.
The story goes like this: Joseph, the most beloved of all the sons
of Jacob, had a dream. However, he made the mistake of telling his
brothers the dream. His brothers were already jealous of him because
he was their father’s favorite. But after hearing Joseph’s dream, they
were irate and determined to get rid of him any way they could.
The brothers put Joseph in a pit and finally sold him to the
Midianites. The Midianites, in turn, sold Joseph to Potiphar, an
officer in Pharaoh’s guard. After an incident with Potiphar’s wife,
however, in which she tricked Joseph by making it look like he had
seduced her, Joseph was sent to prison (Genesis 39).
While in prison, Joseph met the King’s baker and butler and
did them a favor by interpreting their dreams. He begged them to
remember him when they were released from jail. However, when it
came time that the chief butler was released, he soon forgot Joseph
and his favors.

I’m sure you know the rest of the story. Two more years went
by when Pharoah dreamed a dream and the chief butler finally
remembered Joseph in prison and the interpretation of his own
dreams. Pharoah’s men contacted Joseph, released him, and eventually
Joseph became Pharoah’s right-hand man.
Joseph was only 17 years old when his brothers threw him into
the pit to be sold, and he was well over 30 when Pharoah finally
released him. He had been “in bondage” for over 13 years!
Now you know Joseph must have struggled with “justified” hurts,
resentments and bitterness. He was not a “super-saint,” but human
just like us. Scripture tells us, however, that all who saw Joseph
“knew God was with him” (Genesis 39:3). Somehow, in spite of all
the horrendous circumstances and all the justified natural emotions
Joseph must have had, his countenance and his life actions still
showed forth his love of God.
The only way Joseph could possibly have made this impression
was by constantly “putting off” his own natural bitterness and
resentments and putting on God’s wisdom and understanding,
thereby being able to see all that happened to him not from his own
viewpoint, but from God’s.
This is validated in Genesis 50:20 when Joseph finally meets up
with his brothers and says to them, “...ye thought evil against me;
but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save
much people alive.”
This is an incredible response. It’s not a natural reaction.
Humanly, I’m sure Joseph would have loved to have had his revenge,
but that’s not how he acted. He saw

bring to pass, as it is

God has allowed in our lives as being used for our good? I know I still
have a long way to go in being able to do this continually.
By the way, there were no psychologists and no psychiatrists in
Joseph’s day. Yet somehow, Joseph was able to become freed from
his traumatic past (and his dysfunctional family), and his life was
transformed anyway.
If Only I Could Have
Over thirty years ago, when Chuck and I were going through all
our marital trials, if I could only have seen my circumstances from
God’s perspective, through His Mind (and not through my own
emotional way of thinking), I might have been more of a genuine
witness and a true representative of Christ going through the trials, just
as Joseph was. But I wasn’t able to see from God’s perspective because
I got buried in my own hurts and my own circumstances. Thus,
God’s Life in me became quenched and I couldn’t “live the truth.”
Remember, our “witness” is not in what we “say”; the witness
people notice and relate to most is our life actions (especially when we
are going through difficult times). Do we still show forth God’s Life?
Does it still work for us then - even in the hard places?
It takes constant discipline not to give in to our negative thoughts
and emotions that are trying to crush and drown us. Often, it seems
like it would just be easier to give in and let our own feelings rule.
But, you know what happens if we do that? Those negative thoughts
and emotions “take us captive,” and then we’ll drown for sure.
This, of course, is exactly what Satan wants! He revels in our
bondage to our own negative thoughts. He wants us totally immersed
and consumed in our own problems, bound to him by our hurts,
our fears, our pain, our wounds and our circumstances (chains of sin)
because then we’ll see everything that happens to us from our own
horizontal viewpoint and not from God’s perspective or the Mind
of Christ. As a result, we won’t be transformed into God’s image,
but simply conformed to the world’s image and the Gospel won’t be
passed on.

The Eagle
Scripture often refers to the eagle as a symbol of this renewing
process. Psalm 103:5 says that “our youth will be renewed like the
eagle.” “Youth” here, I believe, refers to the “original image” that
God created us to have - His Love, His Wisdom and His Power.
As we renew our minds, it’s true, we’ll be transformed back into
God’s Image, which is what God intended for us all along.
One of the reasons I believe God uses the eagle as a symbol of this
transformation process is that the eagle is the only bird whose whole
physical strength is literally renewed after each molting season. In
other words, only after the eagle has “put off” his old feathers, so to
speak, does he actually receive “new” physical strength to soar above
his enemies.

And it’s the same with us. When we “put off” the old and “put
on” the new, we too receive God’s supernatural strength to soar above
our enemies (Isaiah 59:19).
Another reason I believe God uses the eagle as a symbol of our
renewal and transformation is because the eagle again comes from
the only bird family that has “telescopic sight,” a kind of “zoomin-focus” lens. An eagle can search out objects literally miles away
(indistinguishable to the human eye). Eagles can see a quarter
(U.S. 25 cent coin) from over 200 yards away and a rabbit from
over a mile away. This, of course, increases their ability to judge
and discern the true situation.
It’s the same with us. Our minds, when renewed by God’s Spirit,
have the same supernatural ability. We are able to judge, discern and
pick up things that the natural eye (natural mind) would never be
able to see or understand. We are given the supernatural wisdom and
ability to discern the true situation and see everything that happens to
us from God’s vantage point.
“They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall
mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run, and not be weary;
and they shall walk, and not faint.”
Isaiah 40:31 KJV

freedom from self, freedom from our circumstances and freedom
from others’ responses.

off regarding Islam? Should we try to get back rights that we as
Christians have lost regarding free speech?

The end is nigh,”?
• Should we organize a Christian vigilante posse to clean up

How does the Bible say we should live in times like these?
Times Have Always Been Like This
The Bible says that times on earth have always been like this…
with swings and roundabouts. King Solomon’s forty years of peace
was merely a respite after King David’s bloody reign that followed
King Saul’s bloody reign. Israel broke apart under Rehoboam,
Solomon’s son and successor to the kingdom of Judah. And blood
flowed again!
Paul Harvey sagely noted, “In times like these, it helps to recall
that there have always been times like these.”1
We Are Not Alone
The Bible says that we are not alone! Believers are members of
a worldwide fellowship. The book of Acts illuminates the shared
lives of the fellowship of believers. The breaking of bread around the
Lord’s Table and prayer are both expressions of fellowship. The New
Testament reveals a community of people wholly committed to each
other and bound together under one head, Christ.

Following Christ binds us to a close, tightly knit committed
fellowship.
We Are Made In His Image
The Bible clearly shows that each individual man and woman is
made in the Creator’s image. God as a Trinity is a relational being so
He made us relational beings, too. We are meant to have friendships
with other believers, to marry and to raise children - relationships that
mean more to us than self. He made us to fellowship with Him.
Following The Way Is Not A Spectator Sport
The Bible shows that being a follower of Christ is not a spectator
event like so much of contemporary Christian life seems to be.2
As wonderful as believing in Christ is, it is a state of being.
Whereas following Christ is an action!
The book of James is about actions. Verse 1:22 notes, “But be
ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”3
James continues, “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being
alone.”4
We Are Each Unique
The Bible reveals that we are each unique and capable of
independently choosing the light or the dark.
“Choose you this day whom ye will serve.... But as for me and my house,
we will serve the LORD.”5 Thus we can choose to find the Way and
follow Him, or we can choose the wide path that leads
to destruction.6

Render Unto God… And Unto Caesar
Paul’s letter to Tutus encapsulates how individuals followed the
Way in the New Testament:
“Remind them to
be subject to rulers,
to authorities, to be
obedient, to be ready
for every good deed,
to malign no one, to
be uncontentious,
gentle, showing every
consideration for
all men.”

Did Paul spend time and energy
trying to reform pagan culture or
exercising civil disobedience? No,
he followed the model that Jesus
Christ set during his own life,
proclaiming the gospel and living in a way that honored God’s
commands and glorified His name. The apostles lived in obedience to
God and in obedience to earthly rulers, except where the secular laws
contradicted the Word and Will of God.
“And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at
all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and
said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken
unto you more than unto God, judge ye. For we cannot but speak the
things which we have seen and heard.”8

and beaten [them], they commanded that they should not speak in the
name of Jesus, and let them go. And they departed from the presence
of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame
for his name. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased

When we live as Christ lives, our lives provide evidence of His
transforming power.

Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that,
whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good
works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.10
Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake:
whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto
them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for
the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with
well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free,
and not using liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants
of God. Honour all. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the
king.11
Demonstrate Faith Through A Godly Life
We are saved by faith, not works, but works demonstrate our
faith. We are to be ready to do good works whenever possible - not
just for believers but for anyone:
So then, while we have
opportunity, let us do good to all
men, and especially to those who
are of the household of the faith.12

Our duty as we relate to an
increasingly secular and ungodly
culture is not to lobby for certain rights, the implementation of a
Christian agenda, or the reformation of governments. Rather, God
would have us remember Paul’s instructions to Titus and live them
out as we seek to demonstrate His power and grace that regenerates
sinners. Changing people’s hearts one individual at a time can bring
meaningful, lasting change to our communities, our nation, and even
the whole world.
Can Living A Godly Life Make A Difference?
Some people may ask whether one person living a Godly life
really has any power to change others. The Bible answers this question

forcefully… just ask yourself how many people have come to know
Christ through the actions of Stephen, the first Christian martyr?
In fact, the past 2,000 years is full of examples:
• Michael Sattler, an early Anabaptist leader convicted of heresy
in 1527, was grievously tortured, carted outside the city, tied to
a ladder and pushed into a fire. As the ropes around his hands
burned away, he raised his two forefingers in a pre-arranged
signal to his friends that God had not allowed him to be
tortured beyond what he could endure. Although part of his
tongue had been cut away, he was heard to say, “Father,
I commend my spirit into thy hands.”13
• Recently an elderly gentleman of our congregation died
after suffering for months from a terribly painful form of
cancer. Everyone who visited him during his final two week
hospitalization came away amazed, because Graham was in
good spirits and sincerely thanked and praised our Lord for his
cancer. He was thrilled that God had given him this chance to
share his faith by his actions with so many who needed to come
to the Lord, including hospital staff and family.
• In 1900, a young Franciscan priest came to Bikeyah, the Navajo
country where I grew up. He didn’t try to convert the Diné,
but immersed himself in their language and customs while
setting up a farm and a trading post and teaching school.
He taught the locals to farm and ranch, using their natural
skills and abilities. He published the first Navajo dictionary in
1910 and became a foremost authority on Navajo anthropology.
Later, he fought the bureaucracies in Washington, D.C.,
to ensure that they received the railway land grants that ran
through the reservation, and he also fought for their water
rights. Today the St Michael Mission14 and School still provide
education and support for Navajo youth.15

• The small indefensible rural town of Philadelphia was the last
holdout against Islam in Asia Minor despite repeated Muslim
attacks. It remained loyal as an isolated outpost of Christendom
long after the rest of the Byzantine Empire had been reduced
to a threatened European pocket around Constantinople prior
to its fall in 1453. In fact, the inhabitants of Philadelphia never
surrendered to Islam and Philadelphia was the only one of
the Seven Churches of Revelation to have an active Christian
presence when the author visited them in 2013.16
These few very different examples show some followers of Christ.
When we truly find the Way of Christ, we live it through our actions
in fellowship with other believers. Our actions speak the Great
Commission of Matthew:
“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given
unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the
Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things
whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always,
even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Every Person Is Important To God
When we examine Jesus’ actual words in the Great Commission,
we must recognize that we are not each called to “Go … and teach
all nations” as many congregations now seem to preach. Christians
already exist in almost every nation today, and no nation is without
opportunities to spread the Good News.
In fact Christians are now so prevalent that:
• The authoritative Pew Research Center noted that Christians
have recently faced some form of discrimination in 151 of 198
countries studied.17
• The International Society for Human Rights stated that 80 per
cent of all current acts of religious discrimination in the world
are directed against Christians.18
• Per the Centre for the Study of Global Christianity, some
100,000 Christians are killed annually because of their faith –
about one murder every five minutes.19
• While Western media tends to ignore most such stories,
particularly egregious cases in Africa20 and the Middle East21
have recently made headlines and even prompted reluctant
shows of force from Washington.
What these statistics show is that God need not transplant you
in a foreign land to spread the Gospel message… there are probably
already many there who already know the culture and speak the
language.
I don’t wish to disparage overseas mission work; I merely note
that that is not our only option for evangelism. Christian engagement

opportunities may be available right next door or in our own families,
and these are no less important to God than finding unreached
language groups.
After all, the Way runs through your farm, ranch, neighborhood,
village, town or city; it’s not just to be found in a foreign land.
Every person is important to God!
So we can finally answer our question from Session 1: “Am I
a believer in Christ or a follower of Him?”
Jesus calls us to be His followers.
Find the Way! Take up your Cross and follow Christ! For it is all
about Him!
