November Speaker: Susie Patterson
The Perfect Storm
Susie will be presenting an analysis of the up-coming shifts that are occurring in early Cardinal
signs of the Zodiac. The powerful transits of Pluto in Capricorn, Saturn in Libra, and Uranus in
Aries are harbingers of massive change, hopefully initiating higher consciousness in the world.
Don't miss one of our favorite regulars with more good information we can all use.
Susie Patterson holds a Master's degree in clinical Psychology from TCU. She has been studying
astrology since child-hood, and began formal training in 1977 with Donna Henson. Since that
time her studies have continued with several other great teachers including Liz Greene and
especially the late Richard Idemon. In 1996 she began formal study of Jyotish, the ancient Hindu
or Vedic astrology. She holds both Level I and Level II certifications in that system, even traveling
to India twice to enhance her knowledge.
In addition she has studied Medical astrology with Eileen Nauman, who also trained her in NativeAmerican shamanism. Presently she combines both depth-psychology with astrology to help
clients utilize their life conditions through higher consciousness. In addition, she lectures and
leads workshops. She resides in both Fort Worth, and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Dear Members,
It’s such a joy to welcome you to a new ASNT gathering every month. At this time, when
holidays are approaching, I feel great appreciation for knowing you all and for being able to learn and talk about astrology with
you.
Our organization is like a family. Every time we meet, we look forward to seeing again the faces that we know, we hug, we
radiate positive energy and we recharge our astrological batteries. Certainly, we are always very pleased to see new people
join our lovely family and our community.
This month, we’ll have a fascinating speaker. Susie Patterson is an experienced astrologer and she gladly accepted to talk
about planetary configurations that are most interesting to us at this time. Saturn, the lord of karma, has entered Libra a few
days ago and it is currently forming a square to Pluto in Capricorn. This is just a start. We can expect more changes in 2010.
I’m very excited to hear what Susie has to say about this up-coming “perfect storm” as she calls it.
If you miss this lecture, I recommend you order a CD from Susan and Thadd. Thadd is our new media master and a member
of the Board. He has agreed to help with the sound recordings of the lectures and CD orders. Susan did this job for three
years. We very much appreciate her technical knowledge, efforts and all those long hours that she has put in to accommodate
our members’ requests. ASNT library contains not only books but all the quality recordings from our previous meetings and
workshops.
I want to thank Tawana for her generous donation of several sets of conference tapes that we are now able to provide to our
members as well.
Astrological conferences are extremely important for anyone who wants to expand their knowledge and skills in astrology.
They occur several times a year and the biggest ones are UAC, ISAR, NORWAC and NCGR conferences, SOTA in Canada,
the EA Evolutionary Astrology conference, AFA, the Blast conference and more.
Some of them have been canceled this year because of the crisis in the American and world economies. Other conferences
had a smaller number of attendees than usual, but they presented very interesting programs and top-notch astrology
speakers. We all hope that astrological conferences will be able to attract more participants in the future. Our ability to travel
and to attend these meetings will hopefully allow us to meet new like minded people and astrologers from all over the country
and the world.
In the meantime, ASNT has purchased complete sets of several conference dvd’s. We are going to present one conference
lecture to you every month, right after our regular presentation. This is going to be a great opportunity for some of us to hear
today’s most influential astrologers and learn about planets, houses, solar returns, progressions, transits, mediaeval
techniques, evolutionary astrology, and more about ourselves, our present moment and our future. The purpose of astrology
is to understand our personal path and to answer the question “why are we here” as well as to understand tomorrow and what
tomorrow brings. We are here to learn about life, to respect and love everything around us, and to radiate our inner beauty,
love and respect for each other, into the world.
As Dr. Wayne Dyer says: “If you love and respect yourself, the universe will return the love and respect you’ve been radiating.
It’s really so simple.”
This is, maybe, the best advice for the upcoming period of change. Do your best. Give to others everything you can. Be
grateful for what the heavens have provided to you.
I am more than grateful that the Universe has let me experience the joy of being a part of the ASNT family.
See you soon.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Mira Cosic
OCTOBER MINUTES
A regular meeting of ASNT was held on Oct. 11, 2009 with about 20 members present.
President Mira Cosic opened the meeting at 1:35 by welcoming our new members. She reminded us that we
are still in need of a Media Master to replace Susan Gray.
Mira announced that our speaker for the April 2010 workshop will be well-known astrologer Robert Blaschke,
whose lectures will probably be on medical and relationship astrology.
Donna Henson introduced 3 new members.
Priscilla Peers gave the Sept. financial report.
Sandee Soliz requested articles for the newsletter.
Donna, also announced that she will begin a combined beginner and intermediate astrology classes on Jan.
17, 2010. She requested questions for her newsletter column “Ask Donna.” She then introduced our speaker
Mary Buckner who gave a talk on the “Bits and Pieces of Astrology.”
We adjourned at about 3:45.
Finding a Solution
Pat asks about her daughter, Marissa (6/27/61, 5:57 am, Broken Arrow, OK). Marissa’s Mercury is exactly cazimi (within 10’)
of the Sun. Both make trines to Chiron in the 9th and Neptune in the 5th in water signs. She would like to see what I think of
this configuration.
I would read the cazimi as making a double grand trine giving an exceptionally fine mind although it does not give the drive to
develop it as would some squares or oppositions. The fine mind is also reinforced by the Magi Quad (Venus about 65 ° from
Jupiter and Uranus 65° from Neptune). This is a pattern with two of the four sides parallel each other which may indicate
exceptional abilities.
Being a double water grand trine, we usually think of a person with highly developed emotions. Often they come across,
though, as lacking in feeling because the feeling nature is already well-developed so they have little need to seek emotional
experiences.
Your daughter also has five quincunx aspects, which may express in a need for constant adjustment in health and/or money
matters. I don’t know when her divorce occurred, but several aspects a little over a year ago could have brought an ending of
some kind and was probably very difficult for her.
The Moon and Jupiter rule health matters here. Jupiter has a difficult square to Neptune, making health matters hard to
diagnose, but the Neptune could possibly support the idea of her problem being from parasites. Mars that does not have an
association with health in her chart rules multiple sclerosis.
Heart or circulation problems are also possible with 12 natal, progressed, directed and transit positions at 21°. Ten of them are
in Leo, which rules the heart, while the other two are the two rulers of her 1st and 6th houses.
Transiting Jupiter and transiting Neptune will still be opposing the Leo planets in the near future, so finding a solution soon is
advisable. The Part of Fortune in the 6th is helpful as well as several of the aspects that occur in February 2010. This may be
the best time for finding the answers.
Donna Henson
First, I would like to say that the goal of this writing is not to inform any one astrologer or researcher of the cosmic sciences as to
the validity of either a heliocentric view versus a classical geocentric view. What I would like to see is a stretching of the concepts
(helio and geo) to a more palpable viewpoint, something that could be actually digested in order to gain a greater understanding of
the planetary forces at play in our lives. One way of doing this is by comparing a helio and geo viewpoint. One of the very first
things that an astrologer notices in the helio chart is that Venus and Mercury may form an opposition to each other, and that the
earth itself is actually a planet to be considered. Really, in the helio view, we live in an earth-moon system (Philip Sedgwick).
Saturn, as well as the rest of the outers beyond its orbit, change only very slightly as far as their positions are concerned from the
helio and geo view, in other words, they are nearly identical in both views, save a minute or two of arc. What I would like to focus
on here, though, is just the earth, Venus, Mercury and the Sun (and perhaps Vulcan if there be any of you here with the stomach
or patience enough to follow through with me).
From our geo view, and as many of you already know from this perspective, Mercury can be no further than about 28 degrees
from the sun in either direction along the ecliptic. Venus has a range of approximately 46 degrees. Now here is where things get a
little muddy for me. Did the ancients think that Venus and Mercury traveled around the Sun, and that the Sun traveled around the
Earth? Or did Venus and Mercury simply dance back and forth across the Sun’s surface in a linear fashion, paying no particular
attention to any sense or rhyme or reason? I do not know the answer to these questions. But here’s another the curveball I’m
throwing to myself, I’m suspecting that some did, and others did not. What made me think about this important distinction is the
definition of the inferior and superior conjunction.
We know that in astronomy when either Venus or Mercury is behind the Sun, they are forming a superior conjunction to the Sun,
and when either two is in front of the Sun’s orb, that makes an inferior conjunction.
According to Bruce Scofield in Mayan Astrology, the ancient Maya were aware of this distinction of either the inferior or superior
conjunction, especially in relation to Venus and the Sun. They paid attention to these cycles, and they were important to the Maya
in this regard. The meanings of either conjunction were different from their astrological perspective as far as we can tell. Some
astrologers may contend that Venus conjoined the Sun is Venus conjoined the Sun, regardless of where Venus is specifically,
and this is a valid viewpoint as well. But perspective and a greater understanding of the two views, and how they actually help
each other is what we’re going to see here.
When Venus makes an inferior conjunction to the Sun what we are seeing is actually Venus conjoined to the Earth in the helio
view (and the same goes with Mercury). Now when Venus makes a superior conjunction to the Sun in the geo view what we are
seeing is Venus opposite to the Earth in the helio view! Confused now?! What I think that we are really seeing here is a union of
opposites; a view that supports a view from either perspective. And how many times have we read that the conjunction and the
opposition are really the most important and powerful aspects in a horoscope? The answer is all the time. Antero Ali wrote in his
“1991 Astrologik” that the opposition is really something along the lines of a “secret conjunction.” Consider the possibilities for a
moment for simply Earth and all the planets within its orbit from the helio perspective. What we have are more possibilities to look
at as far as aspects, sign placement, and even all of this in relation to the fixed stars. Someone could be born with a MercuryVenus-Earth T-square, or a Grand Trine. Now, let’s throw Vulcan into the mix. At the very least there were some reliable
observations made as to its actual position inside Mercury’s orbit. But it hasn’t been studied all that much, and its still there for
consideration. What we have here is just more possibilities from a different view.
The main point that I want to get out here is that the heliocentric view can enhance our understanding of geocentric astrology,
especially with regard to the planets inside Earth’s orbit. And I have one more question. Well, maybe two. What if someone was
born on Mars, what then? Would Earth based astrologers insist that this individual be subjected to an Earth view? I’m sure that
some would. For me, it all boils down to the perspective or the viewpoint. But who’s to say that we can’t have a few different views
at the same time?
The subject of retrograde planets is an extremely controversial one. This is particularly true when one
investigates it from the Vedic vs. Western perspective. However, you will find contradictions within each system, also.
First of all, what is a retrograde planet? It is when, from the perspective of our vantage point here on earth, a planet appears to
move backwards in the sky. In actuality, no planet does this — but, because of the velocity of the rotation of the Earth as
compared with the velocity of another planet, for example, Mercury, at certain times the planet looks as if it is traveling backwards.
This can be compared to the motion of a car and a train running side by side. If the car picks up speed and begins to move faster,
the train may appear to be going backwards but is not.
Even though a planet’s actual motion has not changed, the effects of its energy do change. No one understands why this is so,
but, believe me, it is. Symbolically, the energy begins to turn inward and the outward manifestation is very different than when the
same planet is in Direct motion.
For the purposes of this article, I chose to only include the inner planets for examination: Mercury, Venus, and
Mars. Since these tend to have a more personal effect, I felt the reader could relate more easily to their delineation.
First of all, let’s look at retrogradation from the Western perspective. In most references you will find that a retrograde planet in a
natal chart will manifest its energy more inwardly and subjectively. It is, as if one has “dropped a stitch” somewhere along the line
and now must slow down and consider things in a reflective way. There seems to be aspects of the personality that are more
subconscious and, therefore more inaccessible, and require one to reconsider and assimilate the information in a thorough
manner. On the surface, the person can have difficulty outwardly directing the urges of the planet in concern. The person may
apply himself in more indirect ways and, until he is able to establish a clearer understanding of what that energy means to him,
may appear to relate the energy in a very subjective and sometimes slower-paced way. Because the energy is turned more
inward, there is often a very unique and individualistic way of expressing it—going against the “normal” or expected manner.
Promptings seem to come from within, rather than from without so much, as if the person is drawing upon his own inner reservoir.
This can appear to others as though the person is “a late bloomer” or slow to grasp certain concepts or behaviors. For that
reason, some astrologers have tended to consider a retrograde planet to be weaker in expression, while others simply feel that it
is a different way to express. I happen to believe the latter.
In the Vedic or Eastern system of astrology retrograde planets are, by most practitioners, seen to be much
stronger and more potent in their expression and influence. Because the Vedic approach is a “sky-watching” astrology, and
during retrograde motion planets are closer to the earth, and therefore brighter, the energy is thought to have a greater effect.
There is even a very complicated system called Shadbala, which aids in determining the strength of each planet. One of the
criteria for this is called Chesta Bala which refers to the motional strength of the planet. Retrogression is a main factor when
giving weight in this category. Other than that, many of the afore-mentioned attributes seem very similar: uniqueness of
character, somewhat alternative or unconventional ways of expression and sometimes delayed productivity.
I decided to use Lois Rodden’s AstroDatabank to filter some well-known successful people with retrograde Mercury, Venus, and
Mars to see how the energies played out in their lives. A short biography is given, which is very helpful with assessment. I also
asked that the data be reliable, with a rating of either “A” or “AA”. These charts are timed from birth records or from a family
member or close family friend.
I first chose Mercury and asked to see famous writers. Among those listed were William Faulkner, popular American novelist and
winner of the Nobel Prize and the Pulitzer Prize in literature. Interestingly, he did not do well in school and had no respect for
formal education. He dropped out in the 10th grade. For purposes of this article, space restricts me from elaborating; however, his
data is 9/25/1897, 10:30 pm in New Albany, Mississippi.
Next I pulled up Henry Miller, a famous American writer. He was extremely eccentric, writing risqué books based on his own life
in France. Several of his works were banned in the U.S. He was seen as a “late bloomer”, leaving college after 2 months and
worked as a ranch hand and at a telegraph company. He didn’t publish anything until age 42. He was very interested in astrology
and numerology, and, interestingly, couldn’t manage even simple machines, including the dial telephone. His birth data:
12/26/1891, Manhattan, NY, at 12:30 pm.
Next we’ll look at some Venus retrograde figures. There were several interesting charts and people, but I chose two: Demi Moore
and Carole King. One is known for beauty and leading lady roles in movies, the other for writing and singing music. Demi Moore
began modeling initially, doing a nude layout in “OUI” magazine at age 18. She then moved into TV and film, playing in a soap
opera, and then in “St. Elmo’s Fire”. She shocked the world when she posed nude on the cover of “Vanity Fair” magazine when
she was 8 months pregnant. Again we see the tendency to “go against the grain” of conventionality. Her data is 11/11/1962 @
2:16 pm in Roswell, N.M.
Next I looked at Carole King’s life. She is a successful singer and song-writer. In 1967 she and her husband, Gerry Goffin wrote
the song that would propel her career upwards . This was “Go Away Little Girl” and it broke chart records. It was sung by Steve
Lawrence. She won many awards for her album “Tapestry” in 1972, including “Record of the Year” at the Grammy’s. However,
she suffers from extreme stage fright and prefers to stay at home with her children. She now spends most of her time at her ranch
in Idaho, because of her need for privacy and unconquered shyness of publicity. Here we see how the retrograde Venus plays
out as contrary to direct Venus in that she is shy, prefers a lot of privacy, and shuns the social life. Her data is 2/9/1942 @11:42
pm in Brooklyn, NY.
Finally, a look at Mars retrograde. I chose two athletes - Michael Jordan and Billie Jean King. Interestingly, the 4 or 5 charts I
pulled did not seem to have a delayed manifestation of success. If anything, these people were successful very young. Further
research needs to be done, but it is the nature of Mars to express most strongly in youth.
Michael Jordan played baseball as a kid and when he went out for the basketball team in high school, he was cut from the
Varsity team. He grew about 6 inches in one year, and then there was no stopping him. He won 6 world championships with the
Chicago Bulls and numerous MVP awards. He retired from basketball in 1993 and tried a stint at professional baseball. This fell
flat and he returned to basketball in 1995. His birth data is 2/17/1963 @10:20 am in Brooklyn, NY. As an aside, he has Mars
angular and with Rahu (North Node), which amplifies the energy.
Billie Jean King started playing tennis at age 11, and by age 18 she won the Wimbledon doubles. She is said to have put
women’s tennis on the map, winning 20 Wimbledon titles, 5 US Open titles , the French Open and the Australian Open. She
created a lot of publicity when she challenged Bobby Riggs to a public match to “prove women and men were equal”. There has
also been controversy around her sexuality in recent years. Her data is 11/22/1943 @11:45 am, in Long Beach, Ca.
As you can see, a retrograde planet cannot be construed as necessarily being weaker. In my opinion, it becomes stronger, but
more often than not, expresses in a unique way that may not be as conventional as if it were direct. The person may also be more
“inward directed”, and, therefore be seen as somewhat of a late bloomer. However, this seems more particularly true with the
more social planets — Venus and Mercury.
(article from ASNT archives)
I feel compelled to write this note about what we astrologers are seeing coming. We
are in the beginning of a
very unique time in history that will redefine the foundations of our lives. The astrological circumstances are uncommon
and very dramatic. Change is likely to affect every level of our being, even though each person will feel it differently and in varying
degrees of intensity.
I’m writing this note so that you may make better use of this time and understand what it is about. As astrologers we are aware of
cycles that affect our existence; because this coming cycle is very unique, I feel it is important to share this information. I will try to
keep it simple and not burden you with a long text and excessive details.
There are multiple planetary bodies that are gradually forming a very particular and rare alignment. This
configuration began to form during the fall of 2008. Politically, that time was when the economical crisis exploded and when US
president Barack Obama was elected.
The configuration will move into a second phase during November 2009 and January/February 2010. (Saturn will move into the
Cardinal sign of Libra and will form powerful angle to Pluto in Capricorn).
The third phase is probably the most dramatic and intense, and will occur from the end of June to the end of July 2010, when all
the factors of the configuration will align together in a cross at the very beginning of Cardinal signs in astrology. (Cardinal signs
are the signs of new cycles. The planets in questions are Pluto, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars).these planets are slow moving
bodies and therefore it is absolutely exceptional that these slow moving bodies end up all aligned in a cross on these very
sensitive degrees!
In normal circumstances, some people go through changes while others continue their routine. Here the alignment is so strong
and dramatic that everyone’s life can be considerably affected… it is likely that your life will not be the same by fall 2010!
The question that often arises is:” Is it bad, or is
events; a conscious approach can make a difference.
it good? The answer is that it depends on the way one deals with the
One thing for certain: do not expect security, consistency, and predictability during this time. Reality is bound to change fast and
so it is better to move with the flow, while remaining conscious of what is going on. Flexibility is one of the most important assets
during this time. This influence is analogous to a gigantic wave forming…you can ride on that wave and go farther than ever
expected —experience a powerful transformation that can elevate you to new grounds. But this wave can also destroy a lot of
what you are currently attached to.
Redefinition may occur in different fields: you may change vocation, relationships, location, mindsets, to name but a few. New
people will move into your life, current ones may leave. New ideas and projects will develop and you may feel inspired to
completely reinvent yourself! The cards are re-shuffled! A new lifestyle is in the making...this is a time of an awakening, a
revolution…an internal and social revolution.
Everything is shaking up… everything…from November 2009 until August 2010, nothing will stay still. It can
be very good, but you have to learn to navigate these changes and seize opportunity when it comes. Don’t try to have it all perfect,
don’t try to keep the cake and eat it: change can take you to a completely new and perhaps higher level of what you are about, but
you will have to let go of your security during this time. It is a time for risk, reinvention, new ideas, new concepts, new vision, and
the impetus to make it happen. You are embarking on an adventure whether you know it or not, whether you like it or not. My
suggestion: make peace with the idea, don’t resist the adventure. If you are accepting it, you will make the best of it. If you fight
and resist it, you won’t win. This is what I mean by being open to risk taking… it may be time to take that “plunge!”
Risking does not mean giving in to every silly venture. It is about hearing a calling for truth…things you have denied,
postponed, avoided, feared, but things you know were true. This is a time to be more truthful and follow a calling. Attune yourself
to the message...
Collectively, while the forces of corruption and manipulation may attempt to control the course of events, they are bound to
disintegrate. Scandals will continue to hit the news…Natural events will continue to shake the earth. At worst, a war may break
during summer 2010 or later because dramatic changes can spur fear and conflict. But it does not have to go that way; we are
creators of our own destiny in the midst of the given circumstances.
As you go through these changes, it is crucial that you take good care of your immune system because as positive
as
changes may be, they can overwhelm you and weaken your immune system: eat more healthy, avoid fast sugar, ingest raw
garlic and onions daily (sandwich), exercise, take time out of the intensity loop, do not let negativity take over these are basic tips
that can keep you grounded.
Importantly: the situation heating up is like a piece of molten iron that can be beaten into a better form—personally
and collectively. Be an ambassador of good and avoid wasting time on trivial details. For example, as we see the earth being
depleted and all resources and species dwindling, people waste time arguing if global warming is or is not happening…if it is manmade or not! IT DOESN’T MATTER! What matters is that the natural world is vanishing before our eyes because of our
misaligned actions: excessive pollution, deforestation, and peaking toxicity levels are a reality beyond global warming debates.
Similarly, the economy is not likely to stabilize any time soon…but perhaps, necessarily so. And so it
will be with many other aspects of your life...you will not have immediate answers. Be patient and keep doing your best. When the
cycle will complete, new circumstances will emerge. This cannot be artificially rushed. These dramatic times are an opportunity for
us to restructure our lives, personally and collectively. As many things are being redefined, we can relinquish bad habits and
attachments, open up to new ideas, and invest in what works rather than settle for immediate gratification. Patience is another
essential asset.
In this context, do not expect others to change for the better if you don’t do it yourself. We blame the governments and project our
frustration on distant “evils,” but fail to open our hearts ourselves. Being pro-active may work better than being self-righteous.
IMPORTANT DATES TO NOTE:
October 30 to early December 2009
January 15 to February 15, 2010
June 25 to August 5, 2010
November 1 to December 26, 2010
GENERAL SUGGESTIONS:
There is probably more than can be said and explained, but you get the point…
An incredible opportunity is arising, now and throughout 2010…this type of cycle has not happened in recent history. We can
expect a certain level of destruction to occur—that is the price to pay…but the prospect of experiencing an awakening and
creating a better future is now within reach. We are now in the midst of a revolution—a cultural, social, and political revolution. On
a personal level, it is a conceptual, emotional, and or spiritual revolution…truly, it is in the making!
I wish you the very best and infinite blessings during this time and beyond!
May you be guided and manifest the highest of your potential…
With love,
Maurice

Texas Retreat 2010: Horary Intensive
South Texas Astrology Retreat 2010: Horary Intensive
Featuring astrologer Lee Lehman
April 16 – April 18, 2010
About the Program: Horary Astrology, the art of answering questions, is not very different than its
divinatory sisters, Tarot, or I Ching, except that each method uses different tools and technologies.
Why study horary? Because natal doesn’t give you all the answers that you, your family and friends,
and your clients ask. You may have used natal to tell you that you are likely to move this year – but is
the house you just looked at a good match for you? Your client’s chart may show relationship issues
for this year, but is the guy she just met last weekend a prince or a frog? And what if your cousin’s
birth time is uncertain – he still has questions!
Retreat Program
Friday Night
Where Horary meets Electional: A Medical Example
Historically, astrology’s place in the university was in the medical schools, not just as part of
astronomia and the liberal arts. We will begin the weekend by examining the question: just how
separate is horary from other types of astrology? Lee will discuss the contours of this question both
historically and practically, through examining how the analysis of decumbitures cuts across the lines.
Day 1
Asking and Answering a Horary Question
Whether you want to learn how to delineate a horary question yourself, or to refer it to a specialist, it
is crucial to understand how to ask a question. There is as much of an art to asking the question as
there is to answering it. This section explores the first step: th moment of a question, how to word it,
what longitude and latitude to use, and whether a question can be asked a second time.
Vocabulary & Background Techniques
Before you can begin to delineate a horary or event chart, there are some techniques that you need to
know for this type of delineation. These include a working knowledge of the meanings of the planets,
houses, and signs as they apply to horary; the essential dignities; the accidental dignities; the antiscia;
the planetary hours; the Part of Fortune; and all those terms like perfection and refranation that you
know you need, but never seem to be able to keep straight. Lee will begin to cover the systematic
rules for the most common types of horaries: relationships, buy/sell, business and jobs, and medical.
Day 2
Example Horary Situations
In this day of examples, we shall work through the method of reading various types of questions, with
examples. These types include: relationships, jobs, real estate, lost objects and people, moving,
health, legal, and whether the rumor that you heard is true.
