MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
PRESIDENT’S PEN
As we move into Spring, I am hopeful
we are done with the snow! As a native
of this area, I do not recall a year when
we have had this number of storms. The
multiple interruptions have added a lot
of stress to both students and teachers.
Our teachers are constantly working to
adjust their pacing guides and communicate out new timelines with each
change to the schedule. We are still
waiting for some final decisions from
the county on how the added days in
June will be used. As soon as that decision is officially communicated, I will get
that out in a KIT message.
Dear SLHS Families,
Students were issued interims during
their second period class on Monday,
March 10th. If you have not seen your
students interim, please ask them for it.
The third quarter ends on April 4th. It is
critical that students get assignments
turned in as there is no teacher workday to end third quarter. Teachers will
be grading assignments and figuring
grades as we begin fourth quarter on
Monday, April 7th, which was a teacher
workday and is now a full school day.
Students have been meeting with their
counselors through English classes for
academic advising sessions where they
plan course selections for next year. At
the end of those meetings, students are
given a print out of the courses selected. The majority of rising seniors and
juniors have completed that process

It has been a crazy winter, with days on and
off, yet we continue to shine in the community. The halls are filled with evidence of
Science Fair; the drainage topper on Lake
Thoreau will be adorned with work from
our STEM students; we have students
swimming, debating, marketing, racing,
cooking, in all ways preparing for life right
from our very hallways. Look at the front
page of the school's website to see all the
remarkable strides our students are making. The skills that they take with them as a
Seahawk when they go to interact with the
world will serve them well.
As we are catching up from Mother Nature's interruptions, the counselors are
meeting with students to make course selections. If your child has not already
brought a sheet of paper home to you, look
for course selections in the third quarter
report card.
Please, please if you need to discuss selections, or want to change anything, contact
your child's counselor immediately. FCPS
requires staffing to be chosen in April, so
while course selection can change until the
end of May, you are not guaranteed that a
course will be available. If only so many
students choose QQQ elective, staffing will
be based on that in April. Particularly this

and rising sophomores should have been finished yesterday.
Of course, there are some classes that have to be rescheduled due to snow days. If you have not seen the print out
provided to your student, please ask them for it. Those selections will also be included in the mailing of third quarter
report cards.
The weather hasn’t kept our students from shining over the
winter both scholastically and athletically. We recognized
our outstanding winter sports teams for both their achievements on the playing field as well as the many who earned a
3.5 GPA as a student athlete on March 10th . Our Speech and
Debate teams continue to compete and do great with eight
students qualifying for the national competition in Chicago.
Our relatively new Science Olympiad team qualified for the
state tournament to be held later this month at Madison HS.
Twenty-two Seahawk students are competing at the Regional Science fair March 17th. On April 8th will be the fabulous
IBMYP Personal Project fair, IB Visual Arts showcase and,
new this year, examples of the IBCC Reflective projects.
That night is open to the public and is free. Please check out
the SLHS calendar on the website and KIT messages for all
the great things going on.
As I mentioned in my last letter, the FCPS proposed budget
is asking for an increased transfer from the Board of Supervisors. Already included in the proposed cuts from the
school system is a 1.0 increase to class size at the high
school level. Ultimately, that translates to cuts in staff. I
would encourage parents and students to learn about the
FY2015 proposed budget. There are a variety of documents
related to the budget available at http://www.fcps.edu/
news/fy2015.shtml. It is important that the Board of Supervisors hear from community members now about their feelings on the budget. I do want to thank Cathy Hudgins for
visiting South Lakes earlier this month and taking the time to
meet and hear from a group of staff members after school.
Thank you Seahawk community for your support and commitment to making South Lakes an awesome school. As this
year’s leadership class motto goes: Dreams come true in
green and blue!

year, with the budget concerns, there may not be much
wiggle room on May 30.
Thank you to the many parents who are volunteering, especially as the spring season comes upon us. The musical,
theatre, athletic, and All Night Grad Party areas really appreciate all that you do. As Ms. Knapp says, "Home of the
Seahawks, and darn proud of it!"
Please let me know if I can help in any way.

MATH DEPARTMENT
I hope everyone has enjoyed the many snow days we’ve
had this year! The math department has planned, adjusted, and re-adjusted the pacing guides to ensure sufficient
time to cover course materials. It is vital that students are
present in class the rest of the year, as any missed classes
now can cause them to fall behind. We are deep in preparation for the end of the year.
The math department is also trying to broaden student
access to mathematical competitions. Fairfax County
offers both a Varsity Math League (above Algebra 2) and a
Junior Math League (at or below Algebra 2). Competitions
occur about once a month. Interested students should
talk to Ms. Baram or Ms. Yen for more information. Students also recently competed in the AMC math competition; we are waiting on the results.
SOL tests are quickly approaching for Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. We would like to remind you that the
Math teachers are available after school on late bus days,
Mondays and some Wednesdays, for extra help, please
make sure to take advantage of this!
It is also that time of year when students start looking forward to the classes that they will be taking next year. We
have recommended classes, and we encourage parents
and students to engage in a dialogue with teachers about
placement. We strive to recommend every student to a
class that will challenge them and allow them to be successful.

FCPS Emergency Medication Policy Reminder:
FCPS’ MEDICATION POLICY requires that students who need to use (or carry ) an INHALER or EPIPEN
in school (or to use during after school practices and at games; or while on FCPS fieldtrips) must provide the SLHS Health Room/Clinic with a doctor signed FCPS Inhaler Authorization Form or FCPS Epinephrine Authorization Form.
A new form must be provided each year. FCPS Authorization Forms can be found at:
http://www.fcps.edu/forms.htm

Part I of the Authorization form: Parents complete and sign as usual.

Part II of the Authorization form is filled out and signed by a doctor.

(If ‘permission to carry’ box is checked by the doctor): Parent AND Student must co-sign Part II.

Parents may send in a back-up inhaler or EpiPen to keep in the Health Room even when the student carries one. Your student may bring it in with the form.
Bring completed form to Health Room/Clinic or fax to the clinic at: 703-715-4609.
*Emergency medication must have the prescription label on it. Students should carry
it in the original, labeled box - or – tape the label onto inhaler barrel or EpiPen tube.
**Check the medicine ‘expiration’ date and get a new unit whenever it expires.

WORLD LANGUAGES
French
German
Twenty-five IB students will travel to France over
Spring vacation. First stop, Paris, and then south
to visit the former Roman city of Nimes, as well
as the impressive Pont du Gard and several picturesque villages. We wish them "bon voyage"
and know they will enjoy using their language
skills, sampling the cuisine and discovering the
history and beauty of southern France!
National German Exam Awards: 43 South Lakes German
students in levels 2 through IB 2 completed the extremely rigorous National Exam in January. Congratulations to
Hazel Reges scoring in the 95th percentile and qualifying
to apply for the AATG (American Association of Teachers
of German) Study Abroad travel program. Hazel is the
1st South Lakes student to receive this recognition. An
additional 24 students will receive recognition of
achievement, bronze, silver or gold awards and the German Honor Society induction and award ceremony! Wir
gratulieren euch!
Our French I class did a brilliant job on their very
first recorded MYP interactive assessment. While
FCPS PALS tasks are individually recorded
through level II, the Middle Years Program requires students to negotiate meaning in a twoway conversation. All the better to prepare our
students for the real world!
Level II classes are finishing up the theme of the
Town. Some of our more popular activities have
included making maps, giving directions to lead
friends to mystery destinations, and noticing cultural differences in town planning, architectural
styles and building materials.
IB1 classes are currently reading a beautifully
written novel titled "L'Homme qui plantait des
arbres", by the famous French author, Jean
Giono. Set in the hills of Provence, it is a story of
one man's service and gift to humanity through
his service to nature. World Wars I and II serve
as the backdrop to the story-and are also aspects
of IB study we have explored this year in class.
Félicitations to all the IB French II students. They
completed their internal assessments and the IB
written assignments. They worked very hard and
Madame Bachman is proud of their dedication to
the program. We are now working on reading
and writing skills in order to prepare for the May
portion of the exam. In between, we have found
time to enjoy some Nutella as we discussed the
advantages of Fair Trade products and their impact on the global community.
Wir sind activ! We are active in the German classes at
South Lakes High School.
German 1 is continuing their correspondence with pen
pals in Berlin and with the SLHS IB German 1 class,
putting the language to use in the real world.
German 2 students are preparing Advertising Campaigns
for health and fitness products and services. Campaigns
include radio, television and print advertisements.
German 3 students as part of the official IB MYP program
are learning about the very environmentally conscientious Germans and Europeans. As part of the learning
process students are creating public service announcements using Mottos from the German “Tag der Umwelt”
or Environment Day.
IB1 students have been learning about the various cuisines and cultural traditions in the German speaking
world. Preparing and presenting a traditional German
dish on March 24th to a panel of German speakers the
students will demonstrate their knowledge of their selected dish and their language skills. Guten Appetit!
IB2 is continuing to prepare for the upcoming IB exams in
May from reviewing grammar and vocabulary to discussing the stereotypes of both Americans and Germans to
the genetic modification of plants and foods the discussions have been quite intense.

ENGLISH/YEARBOOK/NEWSPAPER
Japanese
South Lakes will be hosting 6 Japanese exchange students from March 22-25. They are coming from Kawagoe High School in Mie Prefecture, where South Lakes
students visited last summer as part of the Kakehashi
exchange program sponsored by the Japanese Ministry
of Foreign Affairs.
Latin
The Latin I classes have continued to expand their
knowledge of basic Latin grammar. They have learned
three of the six verb tenses, nouns of different genders, and are currently working on the challenging concept of noun and adjective agreement. Additionally,
they studied numbers and Roman numerals, trying
their hand at some math word problems in Latin! Historical studies have focused on early Roman history
and the time when the city of Rome was growing under some great and not-so-great kings. Outside of
class, several Latin I students recently took the National Latin Exam, and a number also participated in the
SLHS Latin trip to New York, where they explored the
classical treasures housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Spanish
Spanish classes continue to bring the language and culture to life. The Spanish for Fluent Speakers classes
have been discussing the conflict in Venezuela and
even made a mural to bring attention to the situation!
IB 2 students are preparing for the final part of the exam in May, while IB 1 students are focusing on global
issues such as indigenous populations and immigration.
Spanish 3 students are finishing up a unit on health and
nutrition and will soon be discussing issues regarding
the environment. Childhood memories are the current
topic in Spanish 2, while Spanish 1 students are talking
about games and sports!
-Laura Bachman
As the juniors finish their Writing SOL in March, they
begin to prepare for the Reading SOL in May. If you
would like to support your student’s preparations
for the SOL, read and discuss a variety of shorter
written works with them from newspapers, magazines, or the Internet.
Yearbooks are still on sale! If you have not yet preordered the 2014 yearbook for your student, please go
to www.YearbookOrderCenter.com. If you prefer to
pay in cash, order forms are available on the SLHS
homepage, or students can pick one up from room
472.
The photojournalism students are heading to San
Diego in April for the Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association spring
conference. Yearbook students will attend a over
ten different sessions during the three-day conference, taught by journalism professionals from
around the country. Topics include journalistic
writing, photography, design, theme development,
yearbook coverage, and editorial leadership.
Participating in Ms. Surette’s English 9 Romeo and
Juliet extravaganza, freshmen Haley Weise and
Leslie Zelaya portray Romeo and Juliet for the class
production.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES – Linda Jones
This winter accomplishments for sports teams and
activities were recognized at our recent awards ceremony for outstanding achievement. At the ceremony for the female winter athletes during the season 114 out of 169 received at least a 3.5 GPA. The
male winter athletes 91 out of 178 received at least
3.5 GPA. We are extremely proud of our student
athletes on the field of completion but more importantly their accomplishments in the classroom.
The indoor track & field teams had a very successful
season. The girls won the Liberty Conference title
for the 3rd consecutive year and placed 12th out of
52 teams at the State Championship. The boys’
team won the Liberty Conference title for the 6th
consecutive year, placed 4th out of 26 teams at the
6A North Region Championship, and 10th at the
State Championship. The girls’ 4 x 800 meter relay
set a new school record and the boys 4 x 800 meter
relay set a new district record. There were 12 Seahawks that earned All-State honors.
The swim and dive team finished off the season

Sogandares and Ben Gryski.
At the state meet in Richmond, the team had its
best showing in almost 10 years as the boys placed
22nd and the girls 8th. It was a great learning experience as that out of the 14 that swam, 13 are back
next year and know what to expect. Many great
swims and personal best times, bonding, and odd
haircuts were part of a great time. Coach Scoot
Brown said, “Maybe next year we will go to Pepe’s.”
The Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team was a region
semifinalist and won the Liberty Conference Cham-
pionship winning over Hayfield after finishing the regular season in 2nd place. The boys finished 3rd place in

Abigail Rendle was named 2nd Team Region, 1st Team
All- Conference, All- Conference Tournament Team

was a quarterfinalist at the region tournament this
year.
Congratulations to our Forensics (Speech) Team for

tor of the tournament and also hosting debate tournaments at South Lakes. Good luck to our Debate Team
at regionals that will be held at Westfield.
The Gymnastics Team finished 4th place at the Liberty
Conference Championship held at McLean High
School. At the conference championship, senior Jasmine Shuey won the balance beam and placed 3rd
place on the floor. At the region meet, Jasmine placed
5th on the beam and 7th on the floor in which she was
a state qualifier for both events. This was also the
highest placement in over 10 years. Jasmine Shuey
was the first state qualifier for a gymnast since 2001.
This winter season the Dance Team has grown to 24
members. The Dance Team performed at varsity boys’
and varsity basketball games and the winter pep rally.

at the region tournament. Also at the conference
tournament, Richard Walsh finished 3rd place at
160lbs. and Nick Wille and Andrew Brooker were 4th
place finishers in their respective weight classes.
Coach Stephen Brown said of his team, “ I feel that
our best moment was down in Richmond when we
upset the favored Matoaco High School by 1 point
(who finished 3rd in the state this year) to go on and
finish 4th at the Atlee High School Invitational.” The
Seahawks had a 14th Place finish at the Nova Classic
this year. Coach Brown has a young team and he
looks forward to many more accolades in the future.
South Lakes High School is pleased to announce the
hiring of Brittany Stevenson as the Varsity Girls Lacrosse Head Coach. Coach Stevenson has made an
immediate impact on the girls’ lacrosse program.
Coach Stevenson was an assistant coach for five years

We were very pleased to meet with the Arabic parents of SLHS Pyramid on February 5th at Forest Edge
ES. The parents appreciated all the information that
Mr. Penn addressed about the SR&R and the counselor Ms. Thomas who discussed class selections for
the next school year. Also we had a special guest Ms.
Andersen who addressed a very important topic to
all parents: “How to talk so kids can listen and how
to listen when kids are talking.” Thanks to all the
guest speakers for answering the parents’ questions
and concerns.
The tentative date for the next meeting for the SLHS
Pyramid Arabic Parent meeting will be on Wednesday March 26 at Forest Edge ES, continuation to the
important topic we discussed in the previous
meeting our guest speaker Ms. Andersen will address another important topic as well “Positive Discipline” to know more about the goal of discipline,
discipline begins with a parent-child relationship
based on love and respect, by discipline you children
you are teaching them right from wrong, how to
build a positive relationship with your children and
how to prevent behavior problems.
