We had a great 2011. The Commissioners thank Mike Langford, Erin
Stroud, Jeff Dybdal, Anita Wong and all the Parks and Recreation staff,
and volunteers for their dedication and hard work. I know I speak for
all, when I say we are enthusiastically looking forward to 2012.
Robin Sweeney Park’s renovation is moving forward. Community
support for the park renovation has been terrific. We continue to
look for community input and review as we move forward. Thank you
Sausalito for your continued participation and financial support.
Harrison Park’s renovation is also moving forward with our initial
step being park clean up and sight preparation. Improvements and
upgrades to our Sausalito parks and facilities will continue as funding
permits. Our park and recreation programs also continue to grow in
numbers and quality. Mike Langford, Erin Stroud and Jeff Dybdal have
done a wonderful job in managing the Parks and Recreation Budget
and their utilizing California State Grant Funds.
We are continually seeking volunteers to join our Citizens’
Advisory Committees. The generous support and involvement of the
Sausalito community is paramount to a strong and meaningful Park
and Recreation department. Jeff Dybdal continues to do a terrific job
developing new classes and programs. If you have any comments or
suggestions for possible new summer classes or programs, let Jeff
know. Erin Stroud, our Special Events Coordinator, is always hard at
work planning the next community event. If you haven’t already done

community for volunteers for all upcoming 2012 events. Contact Erin
if you want to get involved. Should you have any questions Anita Wong
is always ready willing and able to see that you are directed to the
proper resource person within the Department.
As a reminder, the Sausalito Parks and Recreation Commission
meets the third Wednesday of every month at 6:30 pm in the Edgewater
room at City Hall, 420 Litho Street. These monthly meetings are open
to the public. Any agenda items should go to through the Park and
Recreation Department office at 289-4152. Your attendance and
participation is always welcomed.
On behalf of all the members of the Parks and Recreation

Sister City Gears Up for a Busy 2012
The Sausalito Sister City Program has a full year ahead in 2012! We
have been asked to plant a commemorative tree in Sausalito for the
Cherry Blossom Festival’s Centennial year. We have invited Sakaide
Mayor Hiroshi Aya and a delegation to come and help us celebrate the
75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge in late May. We will also be
working closely with Mayor Mike Kelly this year as we plan for and host
the Sister City students visiting from Sakaide this summer.
Early recruitment will be underway soon for families in the
Sausalito area to host one or two students in their homes. If you are
interested is hosting a Sakaide student during their 2012 summer
visit, kindly let me know. It is a remarkable experience!
The Sister City organization recently added three new Board
members—Mayor Mike Kelly, E.V. Gilbreath and Dina Hatchuel.
Welcome aboard! We have also enlarged our committee membership
and have many new faces. With all this talent, we look forward with
confidence to a great year for the Sister City Program.
To support all of our efforts, the Sister City continues to explore
opportunities for fundraising events and educational programs to
enhance awareness about the program. Japan is recovering from a
devastating 2011 and we are proud that we have a strong and healthy
relationship with Sakaide. We are very fortunate to have the City of
Sausalito behind us, as well as the Sausalito Lion’s Club, Sausalito
Rotary and Yoshi Tome of Sushi Ran. We hope more of you will join our

BATTERY TOWNSLEY OPEN HOUSE
3/4, 4/1, 5/6 (12PM–4PM)
Open the first Sunday of each month. Battery Townsley at Fort Cronkhite
was San Francisco’s most extensive—and most secret—World War
II military fortification. From 1940 to 1948, it mounted two massive
battleship guns and housed more than 100 soldiers in an extensive
network of underground tunnels; during the Cold War, it was used as
an underground research facility.
Long closed to public access, Battery Townsley has been
refurbished and the public is invited to visit and explore this
labyrinthine fortification. Battery Townsley is reached via a moderately
strenuous hike up the Coastal Trail approximately half-mile north of
the Rodeo Beach parking lot. For further assistance to the site, call

NIKE MISSILE SITE OPEN HOUSE
3/3, 4/7, 5/5 (12:30PM–3:30PM)

Sausalito Chamber Purchases
Office Building
Late last year, the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce realized a longterm goal and purchased a property located at 1913 Bridgeway. In
addition to providing office space for the Chamber of Commerce,
part of the three-story, multi-use building will be leased to generate
additional revenue for the Chamber.
The chamber had been considering investing in real estate for the
past few years as a way to secure the organization’s ongoing financial
sustainability. “The question of whether to ‘rent or buy’ is similar for
the chamber as for other entities and individuals. In this case, because
of the finite term of our contract with the Sausalito Art Festival and
the availability of a suitable building at an attractive price, we have
determined that the best way for the Chamber to protect its economic
future is through this purchase, ” said Chamber Treasurer Joe Lemon.
When the chamber sold the rights to the Sausalito Art Festival,
they negotiated an agreement whereby the new event organizers (The
Sausalito Art Festival Foundation) make 13 annual “royalty” payments
of $100,000 to the Chamber. In order to preserve this asset, and in
anticipation of these payments expiring in 2020, the chamber has
been actively looking at ways to maximize use of these monies as well
as supplement this funding source.
“While we are continuing to look at ways to reduce expenses
and develop new revenue sources, this transaction is a big step
towards addressing the Chamber’s long-term financial viability,” said
Chamber CEO, Oonagh Kavanagh. She also noted that the new location
on Bridgeway will provide far greater visibility and better access for
visitors.
The Chamber Board of Directors believes that this investment in
real property in Sausalito is consistent with the organization’s mission
to invest in the community. The Chamber completed their move to the
new space in December last year. The new address is 1913 Bridgeway;
the phone number remains the same 331-7262.

SAUSALITO HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Keeping Sausalito History Alive
To celebrate Phil Frank Day on March 31, the Sausalito Historical
Society will open a new exhibit of Phil’s cartoons that ran in the
Marinscope from 1977-1984. These satiric masterpieces, penned by
Phil Frank under the name Fritz Crackers, will be displayed along with
the news stories that inspired them, as well as a few surprises. Mark
your calendars for the opening reception scheduled for March 31,
2012. Member invitations will be sent in February.
Congratulations to long-time Society member Doris Berdahl, who
manages the Ice House visitors center and historic exhibit downtown.
Doris won the Frank Papouschek Community Service Award from the
Chamber of Commerce last fall.
The Historical Society has been pleased to participate in the
revitalization of Sausalito’s sister city relationship with Viña del Mar,
Chile. In July, we helped welcome Viña del Mar’s Mayor Reginato on
her first visit to Sausalito. Mayor Wiener took copies of the Society’s
historical books on his visit to Chile in December. An article and
timetable tracing the history of Sausalito’s relationship with Viña del
Mar can be viewed at www.sausalitohistoricalsociety.com/marinscope-columns.
Last November, architectural historian Laura Ackley discussed
the people of San Francisco’s 1915 Panama Pacific International
Exposition—the world’s fair that gave Sausalito those distinctive
elephants in Viña del Mar Plaza. This fundraising event packed
Wellington’s Wine Bar.
Over the holidays, lutenist Eric Kjorlien played music of the
Renaissance courts, churches and castles at the Society’s Ice House.
This holiday treat was free to the public.
In January, SHS docent Steefenie Wicks, a founding member and
resident photographer for the Galilee Harbor Community, shared her
images and spoke about the history of the association in Sausalito
Council Chambers.
Schools Program
Under the leadership of SHS board members Susan Frank and Bob
Woodrum, the Society continues to reach out to students from Bayside
School and Willow Creek Academy. Third graders learned about and
visited some of Sausalito’s historic buildings in November. This spring,
classroom presentations and field trips will focus on noteworthy
Sausalitans from 100 years ago, and on the historic Marinship
area. Each program involves approximately 40–50 students, over a
dozen docents, numerous parents, school administrators and local
businesses.
The Historical Society contributes a weekly history column to
the MarinScope, and some of the most recent columns have been
posted on our website: www.sausalitohistoricalsociety.com. The site
also features links to other local historical organizations, and to the
Sausalito News, which is searchable online from 1885-1923.
Facilities
With the help of memberships and an active docent program, the
Sausalito Historical Society—a volunteer, non-profit organization—
maintains the Phil Frank Research Room and Exhibit Room at 420 Litho
Street, The Society’s mission is to collect and preserve art, artifacts,
photographs and printed materials that document Sausalito’s history,
and the public is invited to visit from 11 am to 1 pm each Wednesday
and Saturday. We are continuing to upgrade the Society’s storage
facilities, thanks to generous donations from SHS members.
The Ice House at 780 Bridgeway carries books, greeting cards,
videos, posters, and note cards with stunning photographs of
Sausalito and particularly appealing shots of harbor seals and sea
lions off our waterfront. The Ice House is open Tuesday through Sunday
from 11:30am to 4pm.
You can step back to a dramatic time in Sausalito history
by touring the Marinship exhibit at the Bay Model . This display of
photographs, paintings and actual artifacts from the WWII ships
and yard was developed as a collaborative effort between the staff
of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Bay Model Visitor Center and the
Historical Society. Historic walking tours of the Marinship area are also
offered. Check the schedule at http://www.spn.usace.army.mil/bmvc/
bmjourney/calendar/bi_monthly/front.html.
The SHS also provides access to the collections for public and
academic research; and presents outreach programs to inspire local
interest in Sausalito’s history and to educate the visiting public and
enrich the community.

SCHOOL NEWS
Willow Creek Academy Update
Almost two thirds of the school year have passed. Students are deep
into a variety of assorted projects. Third graders are practicing their
Noh drumming in anticipation of performing at the San Francisco
Cherry Blossom Festival in April and 6th through 8th graders are
engrossed in absorbing the Adobe Youth Voices curricula. Other
classes are preparing for concerts and dramatic productions in order
to share their learning with audiences beyond their classrooms.
Both of the programs mentioned above, are the result of
partnerships Willow Creek has created with other non-profit
organizations. The Noh Drumming Class is supported and organized
by NPO infusion, a local organization whose mission is to share
traditional Japanese culture. On the NPO website, there is a statement
“If only we understood each other, just one little bit more than now,
we could perhaps pass on the light of friendship to achieve peace. In
1995, we founded the NPO Infusion on such an aspiration.” Our 3rd
graders have been the local beneficiaries of a traditional drumming
program. What is exciting about the program this year, is the fact that
since our students have been learning about African drumming in
their regular music program, the acquisition of the skills needed for
the tsuzumi drums, came very naturally to them. As a result, these
young musicians realized that drumming is a universal way of making
music, not limited to just one culture.
The Adobe Youth Voices program was made possible by a
generous grant from the Sausalito Arts Festival Foundation. The Adobe
Foundation created this initiative to assist youth in acquiring media
literacy. For young people to have a comfortable relationship using
media allows them to formulate media project ideas and themes, plan
their production, review their work (as well as the work of others) and
share their work with others in hopes of spurring positive change. The
Arts Festival grant is providing a teacher to work with our 6th through
8th graders in mastering four specific aspects of media: writing,
music, animation and video.
What is striking about both of these projects, is their alignment
with the statement in the Willow Creek Charter document to “develop
world citizens who can thoughtfully and carefully develop responses to
a variety of situations…”
Whether it be exploring traditional Japanese culture or reaching
out using the most recent technology, our students are fortunate to
have these experiences in their formative, elementary school years. It is
our hope that they will be able to pass on that “light of friendship”.
If you wish to learn more about our programs, please feel free to
check our website, www.willowcreekacademy.org or call our office at

Southern Marin Fire District, under Paramedic and Firefighter Larry
Yoell’s direction, bought and stocked the trailer with safety equipment
such as a generator, water, first aid supplies, blankets, cribbing tools,
radios, flashlights, walkie-talkies and more. Also, Sausalitians trained
in CERT response have taken trailer safety, hook up and driving lessons
last fall. CERT members can now tow the trailer to the scene of an
incident to aid the public or respond to provide mutual aid to other Fire
districts, as requested.
“The CERT trailer is an excellent resource to have in place, as well
as a visible reminder that we all need to put together our own stocks
of supplies in a safe container,” a local resident said.
The money used to buy the trailer and supplies came from the nonprofit Friends of Southern Marin CERT 501c3, and no public monies
were used to purchase any of the equipment.
Save the date! The popular annual CERT and Fire Department
fundraiser “Fire & ICE Ball” is coming on September 15, 2012.
There is a distinct difference between a vehicle that has been towed/
stored versus a vehicle that has been towed/impounded. As we
previously talked about in Part One (in the September issue of Sausalito
Magazine) a vehicle that has been towed/stored may be immediately
released without conditions. A vehicle that has been towed/impounded
can be released as soon as the registered owner has complied with
correcting the reasons the vehicle was towed/impounded. This article
will talk about vehicles that have been towed/30 day impound.
*CERT stands for Community Emergency Response Team and CERT
trains the public on readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety,
and first aid and CPR among other skills. Several CERT teams are now
active in Sausalito and Southern Marin and are ready to respond to an
incident. If you are interested in CERT training and would like to sign
up for classes, follow this link: http://www.marincountycert.org/.
California Vehicle Code Sections 14602.6 and 14607.6 authorizes
law enforcement agencies to tow and impound vehicles for 30 days
when driven by unlicensed, suspended, or revoked drivers. There is
also the possibility that the vehicle could be forfeited (taken from you)
if you have a prior conviction for driving while unlicensed, or with a
suspended or revoked license. In April 2011, the Federal Ninth Circuit
Court of Appeals upheld these laws as being in the best interests of
public safety. However, in October 2011, Governor Brown signed a new
law that modified the impounding of vehicles driven by unlicensed
drivers at DUI checkpoints.
BACKGROUND
The three most common reasons why a vehicle may be towed/30 day
impounded:
• Driving with a suspended license
• Driving with a revoked license,
• Driving unlicensed
It was a minor infraction… why was my car impounded?
Your car is being impounded because you have committed a
misdemeanor, not an infraction. By operating a motor vehicle without
a valid driver’s license you have committed a serious offense.
How long will my vehicle be impounded?
The vehicle will be impounded for 30 calendar days.
How do I get my car released?
At the end of 30 days, go to the Sausalito Police Department where
you will be given a release after paying an administrative fee of $125
(cash or credit card only). After presenting the release to the tow
company and paying the tow and storage fees, your vehicle will be
released to you.
Can I get my car released before the 30 days is up?
The vehicle may be released prior to the end of the 30-day period when
the driver reinstates his or her driver’s license or acquires a driver’s
license and proper insurance. It is also possible to obtain an early
release of an impounded vehicle if the registered owner is able to

provide an explanation with mitigating circumstances to the hearing
officer.
What if I don’t agree with the reason the officer towed/30 day
impounded my car?
Under the provisions of Vehicle Code Section 22852, you may request
a hearing to determine the validity of the storage of your vehicle. You
must make the request to the Sausalito Police Department within 10
days of the initial tow date. The request must be in person, writing or
by telephone.
not a valid excuse. Ask yourself “How did this happen?” Have you
allowed him/her to use your car before? Did you ask to see his/her
license? Any vehicle impounded for this violation will be released
to the registered owner after 30 days.
NOTE: If it is determined your car was taken by an unlicensed driver
without your knowledge or permission then a stolen vehicle report
must be filed. The person charged with this crime will be arrested.

Art Healing for Seniors
Art healing is based on the belief that the creative process involved
in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts, solve
problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce
stress, and increase self-esteem and self-awareness. In short, art
healing is a process of self-discovery that promotes relaxation, insight,
and personal fulfillment.
The purpose of art healing is not to create technically crafted and
refined artwork but to assist people in both being in-tune with and
expressive of their inner life, thereby promoting personal health and
well-being. Creating art is an intuitive process that does not depend
on the usual rules of logic or rational thought; participants are freed
to express themselves in unique and interesting ways - whatever they
find to be gratifying. Never limited to a particular subject matter or
way of creating a work of art, in this class everybody is free to choose
media and materials for creating a self-expression of images that is
individually satisfying and unique to each participant’s desires and
interests.
Everyone is welcome to a FREE introductory session on March
6th.

Rosen Method Movement
These classes are simple and fun and include different kinds of music
and support movements that are designed to improve alignment and
flexibility. By gently moving joints and muscles, we come in contact
with the parts in us that are open as well as those that have been
closed because of tension or physical and emotional pain. As range
of motion increases, the breath comes in more fully and we come in
touch with a new awareness of our bodies and a renewed feeling of
our selves.
Instructor Tina Kelly Green is a licensed Rosen Movement
teacher and Certified Rosen Method and Transformational Bodywork
Practitioner.

Fantasy Valiant Tennis Boot Camp
Lucky protégé competitors will train with instructor John Holtz, J.D.,
tennis metaphysical author, University of San Francisco collegiate
varsity star, and 5.5 “A” champion! After three months of training for
one, two or three sessions a week and an optional off-court regimen,
each protégé will be entitled to team up with John and compete together
for one day of a sanctioned doubles tournament at the protégé’s skill
level of choice. (John is not currently ranked, so he is free to enter a
tournament at any entry level!) Mixed doubles is an especially welcome
option! This is your big chance to train so that you are good enough to
compete in a Northern California Tennis Association tournament with
a pro who has a proven track record to personally guide you into the
competitive fray! Do you wish to chase athletic triumph? Are you up
and coming, older, inexperienced, rusty, but still have the competitive
fire? Let John light the embers of your torch and take you to another
level of distinction! Tournament fees are not included in the package,
although John will be happy to carpool with you to the tourney.
While training, we will work on serve and volley, slam and bang
tennis, consistency, big topspin groundstrokes, doubles strategy,
roadwork conditioning from the “wheelsy footwork guru,” himself, the
mental game, visualization and meditation techniques for maximum
court focus, confidence, and desire. Team up with two-time, San
Francisco All-City Tennis Selection and All-City San Francisco Resident’s
5.5 “A” Finalist John Holtz in an effort to champion real tournament
rounds and have oodles of fun preparing for the tournament of your
life!
