imbued in future generations of Jews. In our time, the story of

the teacher gives; education is a natural process spontaneously
carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by
listening to words but by experiences upon the environment.
The task of the teacher becomes that of preparing a series of
motives of cultural activity, spread over a specially prepared
environment, and then refraining from obtrusive Interference.”

DIRTY APRON KIDS PROGRAM
Challah Baking
by Elena Felgar
an you imagine anything sweeter than the smell of fresh baked challah
that you created with your children? On Sunday, November 1st, the social
hall was a bustle of activity as children and their parents and grandparents
came together to learn the finer points of how to braid and bake a challah.
Over 30 children and their parents and grandparents rolled up their sleeves
and rolled out strands of dough. With focus and determination (and a bit of
flour to prevent sticking), they tried out several different braiding patterns.
C
While their creations
baked in the oven, the
children designed and
crafted their very own challah covers. Once the challah was out of the oven,
our bakers confirmed that the challah tasted as good as it smelled. The leftover dough was braided and baked and then donated to the Jewish Food
Bank. The only question remaining at the end of the program was: What will
our young bakers and
chefs cook at the next
program?
This program would not
have been possible without the incredible time
and energy devoted by
many people including:
Jeanna Gavsie, Elana
Berger, Ryan Berger,
Janet Halperin, Sydelle
Murphy, Debbie Kafka, Mark David, Rachel Grudman, Dina Medicoff, and

CHANUKAH
Chanukah 2015 begins at sunset on Sunday, December 6, and ends on Monday, December 14
What is Hanukkah?
Hanukkah is the Festival of Lights. In Hebrew, the word
“hanukkah” means “dedication.” The name reminds us that
this holiday commemorates the re-dedication of the holy
Temple in Jerusalem following the Jewish victory over the
Syrian-Greeks in 165 B.C.E.
How are the candles lit?
The first night, the first candle is lit. It is the candle on the
extreme right of the menorah. On the second night, the second candle (the new one) is lit first and then the one which
was lit the previous night is lit. The same is true for the successive nights, the new candle is given preference over the

When Shabbat ends, the candles are lit after the Havdalah

TO HONOUR THE MEMORY OF A DEAR ONE…If you wish to honour the memory of a dear one, a most fitting, traditional and dignified
remembrance is through a Yahrzeit Plaque and Light. Each Yahrzeit Plaque, bearing the name and yahrzeit date, is mounted on the bronze
tablet in the Foyer. It is lit on the Shabbat of the week of the yahrzeit and on the four festivals during the year when Yizkor is recited.

TU B’SHEVAT
u B’Shevat, the 15th of Shevat on the Jewish calendar –
celebrated this year on Monday, January 25, 2016 – is
the day that marks the beginning of a “New Year for Trees.”
This is the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in
the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin
a new fruit-bearing cycle.
T
of the bounty of the Holy Land: grapes, figs, pomegranates,
olives and dates. On this day we remember that “man is a
tree of the field” (Deuteronomy 20:19) and reflect on the
lessons we can derive from our botanical analogue.
In the 16th century, kabbalists, developed a seder ritual
conceptually similar to the Pesach seder, discussing the
spiritual significance of fruits and of the shivat haminim.
This custom spread primarily in Sephardic communities,
but in recent years it has been getting more attention
among Ashkenazim.
Legally, the “New Year for Trees” relates to the various tithes
that are separated from produce grown in the Holy Land.
These tithes differ from year to year in the seven-year
Shemittah cycle; the point at which a budding fruit is considered to belong to the next year of the cycle is the 15th of

We would like to remind our members and guests
to be mindful during our Shabbat Services of:
• fragrances (many people are allergic to them)
• turning off ALL cell phones, pagers, and any other
electrical devices
• as we would like to celebrate Shabbat as a community
we ask that you wait to have the Kiddush and
Hamotze recited before partaking of the Kiddush
luncheon
• always wearing a kippah and tallit when participating
in our Shabbat service
• no applauding during Shabbat services
This helps us in our aim to make Shabbat a
pleasant and memorable experience for all.
DRIVERS WANTED
Do you want to do a mitzvah…We have some elderly congregants who would love to come to services but can no longer drive.
