And from that time to this we celebrate this festival, and call it Lights. If the Maccabees had not won their fight for freedom against those who wanted to force them to copy everybody else and stop being different, the Jews would all have disappeared. And so, we also celebrate as we observe this Festival of Lights – Chanukah. We light our candles, play the dreidle game and eat latkes. We enjoy “family” time. SHALOM PRESCHOOL Morah Esther Karasenty “Scientific observation has established that education is not what the teacher gives; education is a natural process spontaneously carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words but by experiences upon the environment. The task of the teacher becomes that of preparing a series of motives of cultural activity, spread over a specially prepared environment, and then refraining from obtrusive Interference.” (Maria Montessori, Education for a New World) on the way children naturally learn. At Beth Tikvah Shalom Preschool I follow those guidelines, creating an environment that will promote children’s development. On Sunday, November 1st, the social hall was a bustle of activity as children and their parents and grandparents came together to learn the finer points of how to braid and bake a challah. Over 30 children and their parents and grandparents rolled up their sleeves and rolled out strands of dough. With focus and determination (and a bit of flour to prevent sticking), they tried out several different braiding patterns. C While their creations baked in the oven, the children designed and crafted their very own challah covers. Once the challah was out of the oven, our bakers confirmed that the challah tasted as good as it smelled. The leftover dough was braided and baked and then donated to the Jewish Food Bank. The only question remaining at the end of the program was: What will our young bakers and chefs cook at the next program? This program would not have been possible without the incredible time and energy devoted by many people including: Jeanna Gavsie, Elana Berger, Ryan Berger, Janet Halperin, Sydelle Murphy, Debbie Kafka, Mark David, Rachel Grudman, Dina Medicoff, and Hofit Indyk. Thank you all so much! Hanukkah is the Festival of Lights. In Hebrew, the word “hanukkah” means “dedication.” The name reminds us that this holiday commemorates the re-dedication of the holy Temple in Jerusalem following the Jewish victory over the Syrian-Greeks in 165 B.C.E. How are the candles lit? The first night, the first candle is lit. It is the candle on the extreme right of the menorah. On the second night, the second candle (the new one) is lit first and then the one which was lit the previous night is lit. The same is true for the successive nights, the new candle is given preference over the candles that have been lit, just like you should give preference It commemorates the victory of the ancient Israelites over the to a new guest who is visiting you over a guest who has been Syrian Greek army, and the subsequent miracle of restoring by you many times before. the menorah in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. TO HONOUR THE MEMORY OF A DEAR ONE…If you wish to honour the memory of a dear one, a most fitting, traditional and dignified remembrance is through a Yahrzeit Plaque and Light. T of the bounty of the Holy Land: grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. On this day we remember that “man is a tree of the field” (Deuteronomy 20:19) and reflect on the lessons we can derive from our botanical analogue. In the 16th century, kabbalists, developed a seder ritual conceptually similar to the Pesach seder, discussing the spiritual significance of fruits and of the shivat haminim. This custom spread primarily in Sephardic communities, but in recent years it has been getting more attention among Ashkenazim. Legally, the “New Year for Trees” relates to the various tithes that are separated from produce grown in the Holy Land. These tithes differ from year to year in the seven-year Shemittah cycle; the point at which a budding fruit is considered to belong to the next year of the cycle is the 15th of Tu Bishvat generally falls on the second full moon before Shevat.
