Shepherd`s Voice - Good Shepherd Lutheran Church
The Shepherd’s Voice June, 2016 Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (ELCA), 439 E. Norvell Bryant Hwy., Hernando, FL 34442 Pastor’s Page Mine is the sunlight, Mine is the morning, Born of the one light Eden saw play. Praise with elation, praise ev'ry morning, God's recreation of the new day. (Morning Has Broken, ELW #556) W hat a wonderful image: each morning, each new day, creation is recreated. New possibilities, new futures, new realities called into being through the creative work of God. Continuous. Unending. Love-filled. And, what a hope-filled image, for those who are weary, afraid, guilt-ridden, lost, that we are recreated through words of forgiveness, through the sacrament of the altar, through the cleansing waters of baptism and of tears. The summer months are recreational months. Time for travel, homecomings, family visitors, vacations, balmy nights, time (feels only like moments!) free of work. The opportunity to ‘recharge the batteries.’ And time for a prayer, that some of our plans for the summer might become a reality before fall comes around. So much to do… So very much to do… Yet, life doesn’t always follow a script. And so visits to the doctor, days of mourning, and the pain of loneliness are summer ‘pastimes’ also. “How long, Lord?” is also our song. How long until the new dawn? Ours is a God of the new day, calling us onwards, letting go of a past that is gone – that is night, and laying claim to a future new, that is morning, that is His. Pastor Blyth Worship and Music T Monday: June 13, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. Bible Study Leader: Gerry Kauth Hostesses: Darlene Hedin & Sandy Jackson All women are welcome to join us in Bible study and fellowship he Worship & Music Committee met on May 4th. Several items were discussed: 1. Setting Ten has been well received and most comments from the congregation are positive. As with any change…it takes some time to adjust to it. 2. Pastor, along with several committee members, met with John Gifford to assist in working out details regarding the enlargement of the sound booth. 3. There was more discussion on possible activities for the Reformation in October of 2017. Some ideas put forth are having a special class on the Reformation in Germany, Scandinavia, England, and Scotland to be led by Pastor Blyth. Also, we are looking at the possibility of working with other churches on joint activities – perhaps a combined choir concert. Indoor Wireless Solutions from Largo, FL met with members of the committee following our meeting. They gave us a very informative demonstration of the Loop System and how it works. They, along with at least one other company, will be giving us a bid for installation of the system. We are still looking at what we think will be the best option going forward and will discuss it more at our next meeting on Wednesday, June 1st. Roger Johnson, chairman W/ELCA Combined Circles Bible Study Mary-Martha will host the Combined Circles Bible Study W/ELCA STEWARDSHIP NEWS RACHEL’S DAY RECAP R achel’s Day which was observed on May 1, 2016 was a wonderful success. THANKS TO YOU ALL. $606.62 was collected for CITRUS COUNTY BLESSINGS. This is nearly $200 more than was collected last year on Rachel’s Day! This year all monies go for the weekend backpacks for Citrus County children to stem weekend hunger. SCHOOL SUPPLIES J ust a reminder from the Women of the ELCA about the annual collection of school supplies which is coming up in July. This year we are sharing with Hernando and Forest Ridge elementary schools. Look for the list of supplies needed on the W/ELCA board in Fellowship Hall or on the table in the narthex. Bring your donations the last three Sundays in July and leave them in the designated basket in Fellowship Hall. School begins in early August. Guidance counselors at each school will distribute the supplies to those students who are in need. Maggie Bregger Stars and stripes S MARY SUSAN PRICE April 27, 1949 – April 30, 2016 ince the early 1800s various groups have observed a day to display the American flag. Presidents Woodrow Wilson (in 1916) and Calvin Coolidge (in 1927) issued proclamations marking June 14 as National Flag Day. But it wasn’t until August 3, 1949 that Congress approved June 14 as a day of national observance. President Harry Truman signed it into law. The American flag has changed designs more than any other flag in the world. In fact, the United States didn’t have a standardized flag until 1912! And even after standardization, the flag changed three more times with the addition of new stars representing new states. “Rest in peace good and faithful servant.” An enthusiastic faith F red Rogers, the gifted minister to children known as “Mister Rogers,” said: “Attitudes are caught, not taught. The best way to cultivate faith in children is to share our own enthusiasm about what we believe.” “To pray is to grasp heaven in one’s arms, to embrace the Deity within one’s soul and to feel one’s body made a temple of the Holy Spirit.” —Charles H. Spurgeon June 14, 2016 Every problem has a soft spot. If it is too big for us, we can take it to God. No problem is too big for God. —Brother Andrew June 6 – 10, 2016 5pm – 5:30pm optional dinner 5:30pm-8:30pm VBS AGES: Pre-K through 5th grade Contact Sue Fowler for more information 746-7485 Registration forms available in the narthex Memorial and Special Gifts T he following memorial and special gifts were given during the month of May. Sunday, June 19, 2016 Dear Good Shepherd Family, Thank you for the cards, prayers, and many kind words after the death of my husband Lew. The memorial service was a beautiful tribute to Lew. I want to especially thank Pastor Blyth for delivering a homily that gave us hope, comfort and peace. Thank you to Lisbeth for assisting the Pastor, Jeanne Kirk for the beautiful music, and the Altar Guild for the communion set-up. Thanks to Barb Johnson and her team for setting up and serving the luncheon and many thanks to those who provided the delicious desserts. We appreciated the sound committee taping the service and making copies for our family, and Shirley McField for preparing the programs. I feel fortunate to be a part of such a caring church family. In Christian love, Shirley Uherchik Dear members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, I would like to thank you for all of your support and dedication with assisting me on my journey to becoming an Eagle Scout. Your help was extremely kind and your generosity was a big help with the purchasing of materials for the playground. It is greatly appreciated. Many Thanks, Sean Donahue Continued… In the mailbag… Dear Good Shepherd family, You continue to amaze me with your thoughtfulness. As the thank you card posted on the notice board in fellowship hall states, “I am, quite simply, blessed beyond belief by the kind, loving and considerate people in my life.” I was completely surprised and overwhelmed by your kindness and generosity on Administrative Assistant’s Day. You brought me to tears and then continued to surprise me with flowers, balloons, cards, candies, etc. for the rest of the week, including at Sunday worship. You made me feel so special and loved. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I appreciate you more than words can say. In Christ’s love, Shirley McField Thrivent Day with the Rays I t’s time to start planning the group orders for the 13th Annual Thrivent Day with the Rays. This is a great family event and we encourage you to consider planning to come and bring family and friends to enjoy America’s pastime. Thrivent Choice Dollars T he following Thrivent Financial for Lutherans members have directed this month’s Choice Dollars be given to Good Shepherd: Joseph Baker Thank you for your gift. Anne Storan ENJOY YOUR ALTAR FLOWERS A sincere thank-you goes to those who have so generously donated your altar flowers. Shut-ins and Nursing Home residents very much enjoy a visit and a bouquet of our lovely flowers. And a big “thank you” goes to Harv and Barb Johnson who volunteered to deliver them in May. This year there have been only three months in which people have volunteered to take donated altar flowers to shut-ins and nursing home residents; there is only one volunteer in the coming seven months. There was also a lack of volunteers in the last three months of 2015 when I took over this responsibility. To help alleviate this problem, you may wish to take your flower donations home and enjoy your tribute in memory of a loved one or in celebration of an event. The flowers will last almost two weeks with proper care. No one has stepped up to deliver flowers in June. If you are willing to do this in June or any other month, please contact me at 637-7196. Thank you. Nancy Gomes Hilltoppers T he Hilltoppers enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of good food, good friends and good fellowship at Cedar River Seafood restaurant in Inverness last month. Our next outing will be Friday, June 17 when we will dine at Cody’s restaurant in Crystal River. We will carpool from the church at 12:30pm. Don’t forget to call Louise Olson at 344-4479 with your reservation. Pairs & Spares P airs and Spares will be meeting at the church to carpool to the Florida Artist Gallery in Floral City , on June 10, 2016 at 10:15 AM. The gallery opens at 11 AM and you can ride with us or go there directly depending on where you live. Lunch to follow when we finish at the gallery. Any questions please call Pam Dionne @ 352-586-3386. The Quilting Group O n April 20th, five quilters and one sewer met and finished six full sized quilts. Then on May 4th, five quilters and one sewer met and we finished four quilts. Some of the ladies had to leave early. We thank Judy T., who made baby quilts, Peg H., who made large tops, and Wilma B. and June D-P who both made large tops. Gloria P. cut squares and Gerry K. made tops and cut squares. Thank you to Peg H. for being our sewer, as Barb D. was ill. Peg H. took the squares with her to sew into tops this summer as she travels north. We’ll meet on June 1st and will be making youth quilts for Christmas gifts to be donated to the Citrus County Family Resource Center. Please come and help us complete this project. Betty Wheatley Bible Quiz O f the 66 books in the Protestant Bible, 39 have people’s names as titles. Some names indicate the person credited as author — for example, Matthew; others name the book’s main character — such as Ruth. How many books are written to the person named in A bit of humor Car Issue A young boy had just gotten his driving permit. He asked his father, who was a minister, if they could discuss the use of the car. His father took him to his study and said to him, "I'll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut and we'll talk about it." After about a month, the boy came back and again asked his father if they could discuss the use of the car. They again went to the father's study where his father said, "Son, I've been real proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you've studied your Bible diligently, but you didn't get your hair cut." The young man waited a moment and replied, "You know Dad, I've been thinking about that. You know, Samson had long hair, Moses had long hair, Noah had long hair, and even Jesus had long hair!" to which his father replied, "Yes, you're right, and they also WALKED everywhere they went!"
