To the very end, [Einstein] struggled to find his
elusive unified field theory. And the last thing he
wrote, right before the pain overwhelmed him [in
death], was one more line of symbols and
numbers that he hoped might get him, and the
rest of us, just a little step closer to the spirit
manifest in the laws of the universe.
According to the National Center of Education
Statistics, only 22% of Illinois 4th graders that
attend public schools met or exceeded levels
considered proficient in science on 2013 NAEP
tests. The Rebecca Everlene Trust Company’s
Intellectual Practice Program strives to increase
these numbers in Chicago by showing children
that learning can be fun, and introducing them
to new scientific concepts that they won’t
otherwise experience in the classroom or at
home.
Our theory is that if we can fully develop more
programs like the Intellectual Practice Program;
Chicago children will be well on their way to
becoming some of the leading professionals in
our area at extremely early ages. Ideas are born through experiments and questioning. While it is a given that
all projects won’t be successful, it is certain that if you give a child the ability to explore ideas through
coaching, they will almost always succeed, and possibly develop something innovative.
The Post-Halloween Science Fair was definitely an ambitious project, but one that we hope will further
ascertain the “Eleven Concept” from which our EDIE Opportunity (Each Discovery Involves Eleven)
Scholarship was born. Project EDIE Opportunity is based on the educational premise that each invention or
discovery is the result of acknowledging eleven core ethical principles of effective character education.
By supporting the fair, your company (1) funded the production of a “Fun with Science” book, (2) provided
students with a host of scientific activities that they could complete and take home from the science fair, (3)
and attracted esteemed professionals from Toastmasters International, who read Halloween poems,
delivered walk-throughs for the experiments, and flawlessly performed other functional responsibilities. The
children were also given an opportunity to work with Bio-Rad volunteers, Drs. Ruth Kulmala and Brugarolas,
and Science Professional Judith Carthan.
With that being said, thank you for helping the Rebecca Everlene Trust Company reach a significant milestone
in its endeavor to make a difference in Chicago communities. Our goal was to ignite in both children and
educators a love of learning that they will continue to pursue throughout their entire lives.
