Kerri has been the Director of Communications for the Office of Gov. Steve Beshear of Kentucky since 2011. She was nominated by the Governor for her outstanding work communicating Kentucky’s roll-out of the Affordable Care Act. The Governor wrote the following on his nomination form: How does a governor of a state the size of Kentucky change the narrative of one of the most important issues of our time – and in the process win public recognition from a grateful President? Because I have a communications director who not only understands information and how to use it but also knows when and how to seize opportunities to convey that information to a ravenous media. Kerri Richardson not only helped me create the message to win support for our decisions statewide, but also elevated our work to the national stage. Kerri brought together our health policy experts, exchange staff, an outside PR firm, her communications team, and top staff in my office to help create a communications strategy that conveyed information about decisions while navigating the tricky political landscape. Her strategy included traditional press conferences and releases and a barrage of social media that helped spread the word to Kentuckians about how and where to sign up for the Affordable Care Act. At this point, Kentucky has had more than 200,000 Kentuckians sign up for health insurance out of our 600,000 eligible, proving that our awareness efforts have worked. Kerri made persistent efforts to grab the attention of national media and focus it on Kentucky. For a state like Kentucky, such publicity is unheard of. And valuable. Interestingly, Doe-Anderson public relations firm recently valued our earned media coverage between Sept. 26, 2013, and Jan. 31, 2014, at $32.9 million for print and online media and $1.3 million for broadcast. The fact that Kerri orchestrated all this with a five-member communications team makes it all the more impressive. And frankly, I’ve never met someone whose attitude stays so upbeat and positive, day after day. Magazine Kentucky Law Enforcement Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training David Wilkinson, Trang Baseheart, Abbie Darst, Kelly Foreman, Jim Robertson, and Diane Patton KLE is honored by NAGC’s recognition!
