B orn in Moorcroft, Wyoming (pop. 1,009) during the depth of the Great Depression, Allen Gresham was the son of a school teacher. When the family moved to El Centro CA, Allen’s father put down permanent roots and advanced in the public school system to the position of School Superintendent. In high school, Allen was both athlete and scholar and, in 1949, he was admitted to the small, prestigious, Occidental College in Los Angeles. That same year his father served as Master of El Centro Masonic Lodge 384. While at Occidental, Allen had served as Student Body President, but still found time to achieve academic honors. He earned a B.A. degree in 1953, and was accepted to Stanford Law School. That first year at Stanford, Allen married Clara, whom he met while at Occidental. In December 1955, at El Centro Lodge 384, Allen was raised to Master Mason. When he graduated from Law School, the military draft was after almost every able-bodied young man. So, off went Allen into the Army as a Private. He quickly advanced to the rank of Corporal and spent the majority of his service at the predecessor location to Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado, dealing with Top Secret documents. Allen was honorably discharged in 1959, passed examination, was admitted to the California Bar, and secured a job with Lonergan and Jordan Law Firm in San Bernardino. Dealing in civil litigation, with an emphasis in eminent domain, he represented large corporations, as well as people whose property was being acquired for public purposes. He was a go-getter right from the start and, in 1962, was made a partner. Bro. Gresham affiliated with San Bernardino Lodge 178 and, at that time, was appointed to serve with the Masonic Grand Lodge of CA (from 1962 to 1996). He remained active with Blue Lodge and, in1967, was Master of Lodge 178. Elected to the Grand Line in 1997, he served as Grand Master of Masons in CA—an organization with over 100,000 members. He was coroneted a 33° Inspector General—Honorary with the Valley of San Bernardino Scottish Rite, and served for several years as Personal Representative to the Sovereign Grand Inspector General in CA. Allen did not confine himself to Freemasonry, but also became active in the community. He served as local club president for the Kiwanis, and later, as their Lieutenant Governor. In 1970, he headed up the YMCA, local United Way, Symphony Association, and was President of the County Bar Association. Allen said “you should never join an organization unless you were willing to serve as its President.” His life was a faithful portrayal of that motto, because he headed every organization he ever joined. For several years, Allen was appointed by the Governor of CA to serve on the Mount San Jacinto Winter Park Authority, a State agency that operates the Palm Springs Tram. He was publicly elected to the San Bernardino Valley College Board of Trustees, and served for over 37 years. In recognition of his outstanding service, the College named a building in honor of the Greshams. He served for many years on Occidental’s Board of Trustees, and through the generosity of the Greshams, the college named a Dining Hall in honor of Allen and Clara. Another group he once headed was Inland Action, an influential business organization. He additionally served on the Boards of Saint Bernardine Medical Center and Los Angeles Shrine Hospital for Children. Allen and Clara were members of the Presbyterian Church in San Bernardino and were part of that Church’s Mariners Group. Allen Gresham spent most of his active career in law as the managing partner of what, today, is a 55-attorney firm, with offices in San Bernardino,Riverside, San Diego, and Los Angeles—each of which still bear his name: “Gresham, Savage, Nolan & Tilden.” He was truly an extraordinarily bright and able trial attorney, who always conducted himself as a complete gentleman—never resorting to trickery or underhandedness. He retired in 2003, at age 72, after being with the same law firm for 44 years. That same year, he received the prestigious John B. Surr Award from the San Bernardino County Bar Association for his “Outstanding Career Accomplishments as an Attorney”. On the personal and family side: Allen is survived by his wife Clara [of 60 years]; two sons—Bruce and Brooks, who blessed them with five grandchildren. Illustrious and Most Worshipful Allen B. Gresham, 33°, Past Grand Master of Masons in CA, and a former Personal Representative for our Valley, passed away on Easter Sunday, 2014. Allen was one-of-a-kind, excelling in everything he did. He served as an example for all of us to follow—as best we can. He was an exceptional leader whose impact on our area was significant; not just on Freemasonry, but on our community as a whole. He was a great example of the Horatio Alger story of success. Written by Ill. John Nolan, 33° —Edited by Joe Coppinger, 32° KCCH SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN C MARCH 2015 PAGE 4 Childhood Language & Literacy Center O A CLINIC STAR OF THE MONTH R N E R bout three year ago, one of my students had a 4-year old brother named Noah. Mom was trying to help Noah begin to learn his letters. I remember she made comments about how difficult it was to get him to learn the letters and sounds of the alphabet. Now, let’s fast forward to 2014. I received a distressed phone message to please call Noah’s mom. She knew exactly where to call for help. Noah was now schoolage and still struggling to learn his letters and sounds. Mom stated that the letters and their sounds “just did not stick for Noah”. So, we began very slowly to do whatever was necessary to help Noah acquire this essential literacy foundation of connecting sounds to letters and letters to sounds. Today, Noah is able to whip through the alphabet cards and verbalize their names and sounds very quickly and automatically. Additionally, he can also blend the sounds together to make words. He knows three kinds of word patterns and he is well on his way to learning essential sight words. Noah is a persistent worker and an enthusiastic student, always with a smile. See photos [below] of Noah and Sharon Visser in clinic setting. He deserves to be our CLINIC STAR OF THE MONTH! Sharon Visser, B.S.— Reading Clinician Sincerely, Erin PROGRESS REPORT FROM A PARENT. PARENT: Marci CLIENT: Timothy START AGE: 11 AGE AT PRESENT: 13: DATES IN REMEDIATION AND SPEECH THERAPY: 2011 — 2012 HOW IS HE DOING? “Excellent! He is doing so good in school!” HOW HAS THE CLINIC CHANGED HIS LIFE? “It was the most dramatic year of growth. Before, his State testing was below basic, or at basic in all areas. Now, for the last two years, he is proficient or advanced in everything. It has been the best experience ever, and was well worth every minute of driving and clinic time spent.” Jerry Beller, 32° KCCH—Clinic Chairman SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN C MARCH 2015 PAGE 5 HOW TO MAKE DONATIONS: RAINBOLT CENTER — ANNUAL 365 CLUB — CLINIC WISH LIST — BUILDING FUND lease designate if your donation is to go directlly to our San Bernardino Center, or General Fund of the CA Scottish Rite Foundation. T he Valley of San Bernardino Scottish Rite has two Class Reunions each year; one in the Spring, and another in the Fall. Over the past three decades, a great number of our Valley members who have passed away, have not replaced with new members. This has created an extreme shortage, and one that needs our immediate attention. Each member of our Valley has to do his part, in order to help turn this deficit around. Next, members need to take copies of our monthly Scottish Rite bulletins with them to their respective Blue Lodge to share with newly raised Master Masons. And, second, canvas these lodges for Scottish Rite members who, for whatever reasons, have become inactive. Share =what we do and give them an overview of various positions we have available that need filling. Then—entice these members to return and get active. K nights of St. Andrew (KSA) membership is open to all 32° [black hat] Masters of the Royal Secret. This prestigious unit is very active within our Valley, and its members can be found serving as officers within our four Bodies; on a variety of committees and teams, and often involved in special activities. The KSA are readily identified by their black wool Glengarry styled cap (similar to U.S. military overseas cap), bordered with black silk ribbon which surrounds entire cap at the bottom edge—extending upward by 1/4 inch, and joining at the back to form two strands of one inch wide ribbon that hangs down. There is a 1” diameter toorie (pompom or tuff) of red wool affixed to the top center of cap, and a silver KSA emblem pinned to the left side—centered toward the front portion of the cap The top officers are further identified by plumage (feathers) attached to the left side of their wool cap (three for 1st Knight; two for 2nd Knight; and one for Past 1st Knights). KSA also wears blue plaid tartans over the right shoulder, affixed at the waste. Please contact Bro. Lee Whelan, 32° KSA—Past 1st Knight, for more information: 951-784-4500; 951-830-1295; or via Email: whelanelectric@hotmail.com. P etitions for the Scottish Rite Degrees are available in the General Secretary’s Office and may also be downloaded from our on-line Web site <www.srmasons-sb.org> Your Blue Lodge can be the leader in “Top-Line Signers” for our Valley. Tell new Master Masons and other members of your Blue Lodge about how they can receive the same further light that “you” received, via the Scottish Rite, by becoming a 32° Master of the Royal Secret. REMEMBER: Our [ONE-DAY] Scottish Rite Class Reunions are held in the SPRING and FALL months. T he Editor forwards names of all newly Raised Master Masons to our General Secretay who, in turn, prepares a letter of congratulations, along with an open invitation for each 3° Mason and his lady to join us at a Stated Meeting. Dinner, which is held at 6:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every month.
