NEWS AND VIEWS FOR OUR SCOTTISH RITE BROTHERS Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Valley of Washington, Orient of the District of Columbia Volume 7, No. 2 March-April 2013 SGIG’S MESSAGE... W e quietly roll into a new Scottish Rite year as the transition of 2013 Officers of our four Bodies has taken place. In the adjacent column you find the men pictured who now lead our Valley along with their personal, Masonic and professional vitae. I have met with each of these Brethren to discuss their concept of what should occur at each Tuesday meeting. To a man they expressed their intent to return to the traditional areas of morality, philosophy, history and symbolism of their respective Bodies and focus less on programs of social Leonard Proden, 33º issues and personal development. Please support their efforts to that end by attending our Tuesday meetings when possible. I should like to comment on our Installation Program (see page 3) as the evening was a fine affair—all due to our orchestrator of the night, Ill. Mansour Hatefi, 33° who displayed his deft ability in guiding us through a busy evening. And to Charles S. Iversen, 33° SGIG Emeritus who did the actual officer installation ceremony as has been his wont for the past 23 years—thank you, Charles—outstanding as usual. My gratitude to all that made the Installation a success. Lots of upcoming activities and I suggest you check the Calendar page and remember that family and friends are included in many of our events. Thank you for your continued support of our Scottish Rite. Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal Tuesday, March 19, 2013 Please join us in celebrating the lives of all those members who have passed on within the past year, so that their spirit can remain with us as we move forward in their absence. Use it to treat burns and other ailments. It was often taught that wounds heal better once cleaned if they are exposed to the air. New research shows differently, and keeping a wound moist and covered allows it to heal more quickly with less infection. Local blood vessels regenerate faster and inflammation is decreased if wounds are not allowed to dry out. The wound should be kept moist for at least five days. Ointments and creams may keep the wound moist but can also increase swelling because of localized allergic reactions. Researchers found Vaseline provides a safe environment to allow healing. But another solution may be even better. Honey is one of many natural substances used for hundreds of years to treat burns and other ailments. Unfortunately because it is a natural substance it cannot be patented and there is little incentive for its use. You will not find it in a doctor’s office or on an emergency ambulance. Numerous studies have shown honey’s amazing bacteria-fighting powers when used in dressings to treat burns. One study evaluated the effects of using unheated raw local honey on nine different pathogenic organisms found in burn wounds. When cultured, none of the organisms was able to survive a 30 percent concentration of honey. Doctors compared the effects of raw unheated honey to numerous antibiotics on 28 different strains of pathogenic, multi-drug resistant bacteria. Only three strains were inhibited at all by any of the 11 antibiotics, yet every one of the 28 resistant bacteria was inhibited by a 25% concentration of honey. Honey has to be the most underutilized therapeutic tool for burns as well as other wounds. It can be successfully used to treat: amputations, bedsores, leg ulcers, malignant ulcers, fistulas, surgical wounds, gunshot and trauma wounds, cuts, abrasions, and puncture wounds. How does honey work? There are two modes of action- one is as a super-saturated sugar solution in that it draws the water out of bacteria and kills it; but some dehydrated bacteria can still be reconstituted and potent. Honey is slightly acidic in the range of pH 3.2 to 4.5, which can also kill microbes, but it also has the unique ability to produce hydrogen peroxide which will kill bacteria on contact. Human skin and wounds produce just the right environment for honey to produce this unstable germ killing peroxide on a continuing basis and the honey in addition contains minerals, enzymes, amino acids and fats that speed the healing process. It is almost as if nature designed it for a special purpose. IN MEMORIAM Donald E. Kline, 32° . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .12/30/2012 William A.
