fact that her training prepared her for
events such as these.
“We have to be prepared to fly on
five different aircraft at any given
time here,” Coleman said. “Our training teaches us that being flexible is
very important. Although it is a little
different interacting with civilians,
we appreciate the support and opportunity to fly on their aircraft. They
enhance patient care and provide a
quiet and comfortable environment for
the patient.”
This situation is a learning experience for those involved and will only
help Team Ramstein continue to stay
“Forward, Ready, Now” for future
operations.
LIFESTYLES
These situations sometimes require
the help of civilian aircraft to accomplish the mission.
“According to the aeromedical
evacuation control team regulation,
when military assets are not available, we contact civilian airlines,” said
Capt. Shailu Joshi, 86 AES current
operations officer in charge. “This
allows us to procure an aircraft to aid
our service members in need without
having to contract out to an all-civilian
crew.”

The Airman required immediate care midtour, during a deployment to Niger, that was unavailable
at the deployed location and arrived
at Ramstein on a Gulfstream III, giving the 86 AES minutes to transport
the patient to the Landstuhl Regional
Medical Center for treatment.
The mission demonstrated the effi-
ciency of the 86 AES Airmen, said
Senior Airman Luke Walter, 86 AES
mission launch aeromedical evacuation technician.
“Everyone did an excellent job and
worked well together with zero errors,”
Walter said. “Because of the professionalism of the crew, mission planners and mission launch, every aspect
of the mission went seamlessly.”
Aerospace medical service specialists assist doctors and care for patients
in a wide range of situations. From
administering immunizations to assisting in aeromedical evacuations, these
highly skilled professionals supply
critical support and are valuable members of any health care team.

Shop for your treasures at Ramstein Bazaar
Photo by Senior Airman Timothy Moore
Martin Reimlinger engraves a piece of wood Sept. 19, 2015, on Ramstein. Reimlinger was one of many vendors present at the 51st Ramstein Bazaar to showcase his merchandise.
The hangers are staged, the tent is
up, vendors have arrived, and all that
is missing is you! It’s time to find
your treasures. The 52nd Ramstein
Bazaar is open until Sunday. The
bazaar hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
today through Saturday and 10 a.m. to
5 p.m. Sunday. Over 25,000 shoppers
are expected this year, so for shopper
convenience, today will be a stroller
day. There is plenty of on-site parking
and bazaar staff will assist you in finding your way.
Over 130 vendors have come from
all over the globe to present the best
variety and selection available. If you
are looking for a great gift, a travel
keepsake, a prized antique or all the
tastes of Europe, the Ramstein Bazaar
has you covered. Come to sample
wines, cheeses and confections. Try
on those Lederhosen you have had
your eye on or get that great vintage
piece to round out your collection.
The talented artists, craftsmen and
collectors are happy to help you find
just what you are looking for and a
few things you didn’t even know you
wanted yet.
In addition to the great shopping,
many of Ramstein’s private organizations are selling delicious fair foods,
beverages and meal options throughout the bazaar as fundraisers for their
own causes. This is just another way
the Ramstein Bazaar impacts the local
community, truly making this a community event. Come out for an office
lunch, bring the family for dinner, and
make plans to meet your friends in the
plentiful fest seating.
The Ramstein Bazaar is not only
a community event; it is a community fundraiser. A portion of every
purchase made with bazaar vendors,
no matter how small or large, goes
directly back to the KMC. It is important that each sale is recorded on the
vendor sales sheet so that our community receives the maximum benefit
from the bazaar.
While we want everyone to enjoy
what the bazaar has to offer, purchasing is limited to status of forces agreement Department of Defense and
NATO ID cardholders. Authorized
shoppers are welcome to bring friends,
families and guests, but remember to
bring your ID cards! When making
purchases, the bazaar accepts Visa,
MasterCard and U.S. dollars. There
will be ATMs on-site for your shopping convenience.
This annual 86th Force Support
Squadron event, working through the
Ramstein Officers’ Spouses Club,
supports the community financially
through the year. Net proceeds go
directly back to the military community. Since 2010, more than $1.5
million has gone back to the military
community in the form of college
scholarships and donations to base
organizations, programs, national
charities and more.

Courage, communication key to suicide prevention
by Capt. Bethany Casper
86th Medical Group
Suicide prevention is a
vital step in promoting resilience, which aids in the overall prevention of psychological decompensation for our
service members and their
families, according to academic research. Worldwide
suicide rates have increased
by 60 percent over the past
47 years and was the 10th
leading cause of death in
the United States in 2010.
These results illustrate the
significance of suicide and
the importance of preventing
it. The suicide rate in the U.S.
military has almost doubled
from 2001 to 2011. There is a
clear need for every individual to understand and identify
those at risk for suicide and
know how to appropriately
intervene.
Several aspects of the
military lifestyle can place
service members and their
loved ones at greater risk for
psychological distress. These
risk factors may include frequent deployments, lack of
social support and a sense
of isolation. Recognizing key
risk factors or warning signs
is important in identifying
at-risk individuals, indicating a problem may be present. Several common risk
factors include relationship
problems, loss of loved ones,
financial or legal problems,
prolonged stress, work difficulties, substance misuse
and a history of prior suicide
attempts. Warning signs are
usually more apparent and
identified as a critical change
in the individual. Several
warning signs for suicide
are mood changes, agitation,
hopelessness, lack of interest,
isolation, unexpected behavior changes, acting recklessly, and changes in alcohol use
or abuse of drugs. It is important to understand that risk
factors and warning signs do
not cause suicides but are
often present in those who
attempt. When these are present, think of ways you can
help the individual by providing them with appropriate
resources and helping them
build their social support
system. Along with identifying risk factors, it is equally
important to recognize protective factors. Essentially,
protective factors help
enhance resilience. Some of
the more common protective
factors are engagement in
effective clinical care, easy
access to resources, strong
support system, regular exercise, healthy nutrition, developing effective problemsolving and coping skills, and
finding purpose and meaning
in life.
When someone you know
is considering suicide or
appears to be in significant
distress, it is important to
discuss concerns with the
individual. Be open and honest and avoid judgement.
Following the ACE model
can help navigate a difficult situation. This model
encompasses “Ask, Care and
Escort.” Let the individual
know you are there to listen
and encourage them to share
their thoughts and feelings.
If you are concerned about
suicide, ask if they have a
specific suicide plan. If they
do, it is important to not
leave them alone. Create a
safe environment by taking
away weapons, substances or
objects that they could potentially use to harm themselves.
The next important step
would be to escort them to a
helping agency. Local help-
ing agencies include the following: Mental Health Clinic
at 06371-46-2390, Chaplain
Service at 06371-47-2121,
Military and Family Life
Consultants at 0152-02663352 or 0152-2421-1233,
the nearest emergency room,
dialing 112, or National
Suicide Prevention Lifeline
at 1-800-273-8255. If the
service member is unwilling
to accept help, contact command or law enforcement.
September is Suicide
Prevention Month, and the
KMC has several important events to help spread
awareness and support resiliency. A suicide prevention
fair will take place from 10
a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at
the Kaiserslautern Military
Community Center on
Ramstein and 10 a.m. to
3 p.m. Sept. 23 at Landstuhl
Regional Medical Center.
Additionally, individuals
will present their personal
stories regarding overcoming
challenges from 11:30 a.m.
to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at
the Hercules Theater on
Ramstein. Come support our
fellow Airmen and their families for one or all of these
events. Remember, the Air
Force approach to suicide
prevention is based on shared
responsibility. This means we
look out for each other and
ourselves and spread awareness regarding this serious
issue.

KMC girls branch out for STEM
Story and photos by
Airman 1st Class
Savannah L. Waters
86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
The Ramstein Youth Center hosted
its first “Do It Yourself Girls” class
Sept. 6 at the Ramstein Teen Center.
DIY Girls is a science, technology,
engineering and math class specifically designed to generate interest in
science among girls from sixth to
12th grade within the KMC.
“Many of the STEM-based professions are predominantly occupied
by males,” said Vikramjeet Rathaur,
Ramstein Youth Center programs
STEM coordinator. “The focus of
this class is to generate interest and
develop skills with our female participants, to foster an interest in STEM
programming and possible future
career options.”
Students will learn skills such as
3-D design and printing, programming and robotics.
Julia Nakamoto, a senior at
Ramstein High School, has participated in the STEM program for three
years.
Vikramjeet Rathaur, Ramstein Youth Center programs science, technology, engineering and
math coordinator, explains an assignment during a “Do It Yourself Girls” class Sept. 6 on
Ramstein. The Ramstein Youth Center offers a variety of other programs on different days of the
week that concentrate more on music making, robotics, 3-D printing, woodworking and drones .
All participants are welcome to join those classes as well.
“Even if I decide not to pursue
a career in the STEM field, I still
enjoy participating and learning what
the STEM program has to offer,”
Nakamoto said.
The DIY Girls class is an extension of the Ramstein STEM Center
of Innovation, which is financed by a
grant that is funded by Raytheon and
the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
The class came about when the
Nerd Herd, students from Ramstein
High School involved in the STEM
program, attended the initial meetings during the summer to discuss
how to further the program and
ensure it stayed compliant with the
requirements for the grant.
“As part of the STEM grant, we
must maintain a 50 percent female
participation in the STEM Center,”
Rathaur said.
Along with other community members, the Nerd Herd helped to pick
out a dedicated space and time, plan
activities and make sure they had the
supplies needed for DIY Girls.
After researching and determining
the best course of action for such a
class, the Ramstein STEM Center of
Innovation has set its plan in motion
to provide girls with the opportunity
to explore the STEM fields.
The class meets every Tuesday
from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the
Ramstein Teen Center, Bldg. 411.
Membership is free for participants. The only requirement is to
register online at www.AllPlayers.
com as a member of the Ramstein
Teen Center.
For more information about DIY
Girls, call Ramstein Youth Programs
at 06371-47-6444.
A student begins working on her first 3-D printing project during a “Do It Yourself Girls” class
Sept. 6 on Ramstein. The students learned about 3-D printing during their first project, for which
they designed and printed a puzzle cube. Later, students took on projects such as making a
cyborg, programming, robotics and drones.

86 AW command chief engages KMC 5/6

Chief Master Sgt. Aaron D.
Bennett, 86th Airlift Wing command chief, spoke to members of the
Kaiserslautern Military Community
5/6 association during their general membership meeting Sept. 1 on
Ramstein.
Bennett discussed new changes
to the Air Force, especially adjustments to the promotion system.
“The promotion system is working the way we want it to,” Bennett
said. “What have you done in the
last five years? Have you been doing
the same thing or have you changed
your duty description? How many
people are you leading? Have you
been expanding your knowledge
and have you been doing something
new? These are the things they’re
looking for.”
Bennett also highlighted the
reduction of additional duties, which
had been a cause of concern for
Airmen who said additional duties
competed with their primary missions.
The KMC 5/6 is an organization

Military Community 5/6 organization Sept. 1 on Ramstein. The KMC 5/6, a volunteer organization, professionally develops and mentors noncommissioned officers.
that seeks to lead, develop and mentor E-5s and E-6s for further leadership.
Staff Sgt. Trier Stewart, 86th
Force Support Squadron First Term
Airman Center lead and KMC 5/6
president, believed Bennett’s presence at the 5/6 meeting helped give
noncommissioned officers direction
in how to lead their Airmen and set
them up for success.
“We’re grooming the NCO tier
to become effective NCOs and
supervisors while preparing them to
become senior NCOs,” Stewart said.
“As our Air Force continues to go
through paradigm shifts, it’s imperative that our Airmen are knowledgeable in order to execute the missions
that are before us, (and) I believe
that process begins with our leadership’s guidance and involvement.
“(Bennett) gave leaders who deal
with Airmen on a day-to-day basis a
roadmap to give their Airmen information in regards to what’s going
on: What’s going on with these
changes, what’s my enlisted performance record supposed to look
like and what am I supposed to be
doing to become an NCO? How do I
get there?” Stewart continued. “It’s
going to allow our members and our
NCOs to execute the mission effectively and efficiently, and that in
itself is going to boost the morale of
the Airmen across the board.”
Tech. Sgt. Jonathan Cagle, 86th
Medical Support Squadron NCO in
charge of clinical maintenance and
KMC 5/6 vice president, added that
the effectiveness of the promotion
process will help Airmen gain more
confidence in the system.
“What we know is that the system
is working the way it is intended,”
Cagle said. “I think it is a big confidence booster to people to understand that even though (we) may not
fully understand what is happening
behind the doors, what is supposed
to be happening is happening.”
Although Bennett’s speech to
the members of the 5/6 concerned
changes to the policies of the Air
Force, the message remains the
same: Whatever decisions Air Force
leaders make, Airmen are not forgotten and will always be taken care of.

86 MSG keeps Ramstein moving

When people think of the Air Force,
they often think of gigantic cargo
planes carrying tanks by air into war
zones and supersonic jets soaring
through the vast blue sky.
But the Air Force is much bigger than most peoples’ imaginations.
Although these common conceptions
of the Air Force are not far from reality, the true scope of its mission goes
much deeper.
The 86th Mission Support Group
is one of the pillars of the 86th Airlift
Wing. Armed with seven squadrons,
the Air Force’s only Deployment
Transition Center and more than
3,500 members, the 86 MSG keeps
the 86 AW functioning.
“The MSG is really an enabler to
everything that happens in this wing,”
said Lt. Col. Kyle Korver, 86 MSG
deputy commander. “One of our key
focus areas is to enable the mission of
others. So we do that really by integrating all of our key functions which
are all supporting of the mission.
“We also understand that every
function is absolutely integral to how
we function overall in the group, how
we support the wing, and how we
make sure that not only the 86 AW
but also all our mission partners and
the headquarters staff on this base are
supported for full mission execution,”
Korver added.
Just like a body has a wide variety
of organs and appendages in different
places, the 86 MSG’s squadrons differ in their mission and location, with
units on Ramstein and Vogelweh and
in Turkey and the U.K. These many

Chicken
Kabobs
Ingredients for 4 people
To marinate chicken, mix the lemon juice,
peel, 2 tablespoons olive oil, half of the oregano
and half of the garlic. Rinse chicken under cold
water and pat dry. Cut into 1 inch stripes. It is
best to cut the filets the long way. Weave the
chicken onto each stick individually. Put them
into the marinade sauce for 1-2 hours, in the
refrigerator, covered. Turn the sticks over in
marinade at the halfway point.
• 1¾ pound chicken filets
• 20 wooden skewers/sticks
• Baking parchment paper
• 1 cup green olives
• 4 tablespoons olive oil
• 1 organic lemon
• 6 stalks fresh oregano
• 2 garlic cloves minced
Preparation
Soak the wooden sticks in water for 1-2
hours so that they don’t burn in oven. Wash the
fresh oregano. Let it dry a bit and then mince
the leaves. Wash the lemon under hot water.
Dry and grate the lemon on the fine side of a
grader to remove all peel. Squeeze the lemon
juice out of the lemon.
To make the dip put the remaining oil, garlic, oregano and olives in a mixing bowl/glass.
Use a hand held mixer and blend the ingredients until it is a smooth paste. Add salt, ground
white pepper to match your personal taste.
Heat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius or convection oven to 175 degrees Celsius. Put parchment paper in a cookie pan. Place chicken
skewers on parchment paper. Add a little salt
and pepper. After 10 minutes, turn chicken
over. They should be done in 20 minutes total cook time. You can serve them cold or hot,
with the dip. Fresh baguette and salad with yogurt dressing are nice sides to this tasty meat!

the 86th Mission Support Group.
86 MSG, from Page 8
different units work together to support the 86th Airlift Wing’s
missions.
The 86 MSG’s units include the 86th Communications
Squadron, 700th Contracting Squadron, 86th Security Forces
Squadron, 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron, 86th Force
Support Squadron, 786 FSS, Deployment Transition Center,
2nd Air Postal Squadron and Airman Leadership School.
“Each squadron has its own function, but each one is absolutely critical to the function of the others,” Korver said. “It
could be just through supporting their personnel, or in a lot
of cases, they actually have different functions that work very
closely together to make sure that a combined effect happens to
support the overall mission.”
Although these squadrons have operations which appear
unrelated to each other, they do have one thing in common: taking care of the Airmen is a major focal point of their mission.
Security forces is responsible for protecting Airmen and
keeping them safe, the force support squadrons make sure
Airmen’s physical and mental needs are taken care of and the
DTC helps redeploying Airmen transition back into society
while Airman Leadership School develops and prepares them
to be future leaders.
“World-class mission support and care for one another is
what enables Airmen to get better every day and succeed,”
said Jamie Newman, 569th USFPS security forces manager.
“Whether it be food service, at a communications terminal or
out at the gate, world-class mission support gets the air-minded
warrior what they need.
“The Airmen are the mission; the mission is the Airmen,”
Newman continued. “Taking care of them means taking care of
the mission. Without our innovative Airmen, the mission would
not get done. I would encourage everyone to get out and visit
the 86 AW Airmen where they work: tremendous Airmen doing
the mission extremely well and proud of it … airpower!”
Just as cells are the basic building blocks of body parts,
Airmen are the foundation of the Air Force and its operations.
“The Airmen enable everything that happens,” Korver said.
“The entire mission of our group is to ensure we have trained
and qualified Airmen supporting other mission sets. ... Without
the MSG, this base would grind to a halt.
“(Brig. Gen. Richard G. Moore Jr., 86th Airlift Wing commander) pointed out just how critical every single function is to
the Air Force, and if you take one of those away, something key
is going to fail,” Korver continued. “They all absolutely work
in concert as a very good system.”
Whether it’s flying jets to faraway lands, destroying the
enemy or guarding bases on the home front, none of these missions would be possible without Airmen. That is why the people
of the 86 MSG are dedicated to their mission: taking care of
their own.

Culinary Soldiers compete for top honors

Command Public Affairs
After a day of tough competition
both in the kitchen and outside of
it, two culinary specialists will represent the 21st Theater Sustainment
Command at the U.S. Army Europe
Culinary Warrior of the Year competition later this month.
Sgt. Aaron Warren and Spc. Vontrell
Witter, both assigned to the 16th
Sustainment Brigade, were the last two
standing after a one-day competition
held Sept. 7 at the Clock Tower Cafe
on Kleber Kaserne.
Three noncommissioned officers
and three junior enlisted Soldiers initially accepted the challenge to find
out who would be named the best for
a chance to compete at the USAREUR
level later this month.
“These are the best of the best that
were nominated from their units,” said
Master Sgt. George Deloatch, senior
culinary management NCO and board
president. “Now, we need to find the
top Soldier who will go on to represent
21st TSC.”
The competition presented three
challenges: Army Physical Fitness
Test, Basic Soldier/NCO and Food
Service Knowledge Board, and the
culinary cook-off. Competitors had to
demonstrate that not only could they
provide diners with the ultimate dining
experience but they also had to present
themselves as culinary professionals.
“I was just promoted to sergeant, and
I love to challenge myself,” Warren
said. “I felt I needed to use what the
Army has to offer to better myself, and
this was it.”
New to Germany, Warren felt the
experience would help him develop
into a better NCO and he could tell his
Soldiers of his experience and encourage them to do the same. Moving
forward, Warren understands it takes
confidence and applying the judges’
critique at the next level will definitely
help set him apart from his peers.
“Everyone in Baumholder loves my
kool-aid,” said Spc. Vontrell Witter,
16th SB. “I wanted to prove I was
more than that. The competition was
fun, and it is something all culinary
specialists should strive to achieve.”
“It was nice to see the degree of
experience the junior Soldier and
NCOs had at their level.” said Sgt. 1st
Class Louis Anderson, 92nd Military
Police Company culinary manger and
critique judge. “We are here to help
them better themselves and move forward in their career.”
With only two weeks left to prepare
for the USAREUR competition, these
two victors are looking to get back to
their kitchen at their home station and
prepare for their next challenge.

BOEBLINGEN, Germany — The
554th Military Police Company held
the fourth annual Clifton Challenge
Sept. 1 at the Boeblingen Local
Training Area, Germany, in honor of
Cpl. Karen N. Clifton, who was killed
in Baghdad, Iraq, June 21, 2007,
when her High Mobility Multipurpose
Wheeled Vehicle was hit by a rocketpropelled grenade, injuring two other
passengers in the vehicle.
“The Soldiers out here competing
tells a lot about their character,” said
2nd Lt. Jonathan Chambless, platoon
leader and event planner. “They are
high-speed, motivated and everybody
loves a little competition.”
The competition consisted of five
events beginning with a modified

2-mile run. Other grueling events
included a land navigation challenge,
obstacle course, M4-stress shoot,
8-mile ruck march that had to be
completed within 2 hours and finally
a team knowledge board. With little
to no breaks in between events, the
entire challenge was physically and
mentally grueling.
“I feel honored to be out here
representing Cpl. Clifton since she
was part of first platoon,” said Spc.
Jonathan Jerez. “She didn’t quit in
Iraq, so we are not going to quit out
here.”
The competition was built to test
the Soldiers’ endurance and ability to
work as a team, and competitors were
timed as a group, not as individual
Soldiers. Clifton was known for her
hard work, dedication and putting a
smile on her teammates’ faces.
“We began the Clifton Challenge
in 2013, and we hope to continue the tradition for years to come,”
Chambless said.
Clifton was awarded the Bronze
Star and Purple Heart for her bravery,
and she continues to be in the hearts
and minds of the 554th Military
Company.

Rodenbach’s culinary hike features nature, food specialties
by Petra Lessoing
86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
A culinary hike will take place for
the eighth time in Rodenbach Saturday
and Sunday.
It is known as the biggest culinary
hike in the Westpfalz and will lead
walkers on mostly paved trails to eight
stations where they can taste culinary
specialties and wines.
“After the culinary hike was a big
success last year and we lured more
than 6,000 hikers, there was no doubt
about organizing another hike this year
again,” said Christoph Molter from the
organizing event team.
Interested walkers can start at
11 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.
“We are happy to welcome visitors
from all over to this scenic route in the
western part of our beautiful Pfalz,”
said Anja Pfeiffer, Weilerbach Union
Community mayor. “They not only can
enjoy the diverse colors of fall but also
the diverse dishes and wines caterers
will serve.”

wine meat, barbecue specialties, pulled
pork sandwiches and flammkuchen.
Sweet delicacies include French toast
with vanilla sauce and cakes.
Vintners from nearby regions will
serve a variety of wines and prosecco.
Event participants who would like to
taste different wines should buy a wine
pass with wine glass for €7 at one of
the two information stands. The wine
pass is the ticket to the event.
“Visitors with a wine pass will be
able to taste wines at a reduced price
of €1.50 at each wine station. They
can have their wine passes filled out at
each station, and after presenting it at
one of the information stands, they will
receive a present,” Molter said.
Visitors who do not drink alcohol do
not need to buy the wine pass.
Children can jump on a bouncy
castle, get their faces painted and take
part in other activities in the children’s
paradise.
“Let’s forget about the everyday life
and enjoy the nature and fine specialties,” said Ralf Schwarm, Rodenbach’s
mayor. “I wish our guests some nice
relaxing hours on this hike.”
Participants can park their vehicles
in the parking lots in the Industriegebiet
Nord on Hans-Geiger Strasse in
Kaiserslautern, the industrial area
between Vogelweh and Weilerbach
along state road L367, and start their
route there following the signs.
Passengers can board city busses
on bus route 101 at the Kaiserslautern
Rathaus or on bus route 140 at the
Hautpbahnhof to be driven to the
center of Rodenbach. Busses will
drive every hour. For details, visit
www.swk.de for route 101 or www.
