Airman devotes life to service

ong before he could fit into
combat boots or even speak
English, Peter Karpawitz-Godt
was becoming familiar with
military life.
Born in the most northern town in
Germany, Karpawitz-Godt was raised
the son of a German police officer in the
midst of World War II.
After moving to Kassel, a major
German city, Karpawitz-Godt said it was
natural for them to get bombed quite a
bit.
“I was 7 years old when a 250-pound
bomb landed in our backyard,” he said.
“It didn’t explode, otherwise I wouldn’t
be here right now. My dad unscrewed the
fuse later on and cut it out.”
After the war, Karpawitz-Godt’s father
received letters from old friends who
lived in the United States asking if one of
his sons would like to come to America.
“I was kind of adventurous so I said,
‘I’ll go,’” Karpawitz-Godt said. “I went
to Youngstown, Ohio, in 1955, because
that’s where (my father’s) friends lived.”

Cannot ‘stress’ importance of stress awareness enough
COMMENTARY
by Master Sgt. Daira Hall
86th Munitions Squadron
As I sat in my commander’s office, I thought
to myself, “Am I the best person to write about
stress?” After all, I am a new first sergeant, new
to an overseas location and new to the line-side
of the Air Force. What could I possibly know
about stress?
We all have stress, and we all deal with it differently. At what point does a person take control
of the factors of stress in life or succumb to the
pressure of it all?
What is the first word that comes to mind when
I mention the word stress? Is it work, family,
home or money? We all have stress in our lives; it
is a constant. It may have a completely negative
connotation, or stress may be a positive motivator. According to Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, stress is defined as a state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in your life,
work, etc.; something that causes strong feelings
or worry and anxiety; physical force or pressure.
Upon further reflection, I decided that some of
my experiences may be applicable. For example,
the simple task of trying to write about stress
caused me stress. Should I make a laundry list of
all the stressful things in my life? This list would
exceed the space available for this article.
Instead I thought, let’s take a few moments to
really flesh out ways to deal with, react or coun-
ter stress. The idea is to recognize and manage
the negative and positive aspects of stress. Stress
awareness is another tool to place in your tool kit
when times get tough.
Just as I referenced the dictionary, AFI 44-153,
Traumatic Stress Response, defines typical and
normal stress responses as: feeling keyed up,
on edge and restless; hyper-vigilance; exaggerated startle response; irritability or outburst of
anger; sadness and crying; fatigue; difficulty
concentrating or preoccupation with a traumatic event; muscle tension; sleep disturbances
(difficulty falling or staying asleep, or restless
unsatisfying sleep); appetite disturbances (forgetting to eat or drink). Obviously, these are
examples of the negative attributes linked with
stress.
Identifying the source of the stress and accepting when the situation is beyond your personal
control are ways to put stress in a positive
light.
Having a good attitude can also go a long way
to help discover solutions to stress problems.
For instance, if what’s currently happening is
going to be unimportant in five years, it may not
be worth the worry. Learning from stress is an
optimistic tactic to gain insight regarding the
experience. Lastly, viewing the circumstances in
level of importance can help people cope with
stress.
So, we know about negative and positive
stressors. How do we react and counter them?
Unhealthy and harmful ways to deal with stress
include smoking, drinking, over- or undereating, withdrawing from family or friends,
sleeping too much or procrastinating.
Healthy and progressive stress management
includes listening to music, getting a massage,
playing with a pet, taking a walk, reading a
good book, watching a comedy, writing in a
journal, playing a sport, calling a good friend,
hunting or fishing, working in a garden, walking, running or working out. As you can see, the
list of good or constructive stress management
is longer.
The main idea is to change our perceptions
and reframe failures or shortcomings to new
opportunities. In relation to stress, you should
not think of things as all or nothing. Be compassionate with yourself and concentrate on the
positive in the situation.
Stress happens to all of us. The key is not letting it overwhelm you. By simply acknowledging that you have stress in your life, you have
faced the challenge head-on.
Knowing your foe or enemy helps you prepare for the battle. After recognition, you must
choose how to react or counter stress. Most
importantly, know when your stress level has
exceeded your ability to cope and seek help.
When in need, asking for help is truly a sign of
strength.
‘Spring’ the alarm
As service members prepare to move
their clocks forward one hour Sunday
for daylight saving time, the 86th Civil
Engineer Squadron fire protection flight has
a few recommendations concerning smoke
detector safety. While springing forward,
don’t forget to “spring” the alarm by replacing its batteries. Smoke detector batteries
should be changed at least once a year to
make sure they operate properly when they
are needed most.
When a fire occurs, there are only seconds to make a decision on how to escape
the heat, toxic smoke and (monoxide filled)
superheated gases. To increase the chances
of survival, smoke detectors at home and at
work should be properly maintained.

Below are more tips on how to increase
survivability:
• Place a smoke detector on every level
of the home and outside each bedroom. If
bedroom doors are kept closed while sleeping, place a smoke detector in each bedroom as well.
• Check smoke detectors monthly by
pushing the test button.
• Never disable a smoke detector when
cooking, and remember that smoke detectors wear out over time. Replace smoke
detectors if they are more than 10 years old.

Ramstein child molester caught, convicted
by Capt. Reba Good
U.S. Air Forces in Europe and
Air Forces Africa Public Affairs
The Airman who abducted and
molested multiple children in the
KMC in 2012 was caught and sentenced to 50 years confinement, reduction to airman basic and forfeiture of
all pay and allowances March 18 at
F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo.
Tech. Sgt. Michael L. Merritt, who
was stationed at Ramstein at the time
of the attacks, was convicted of charges involving children spanning from
2003 through 2013, and specifically, aggravated sexual assault, sexual
abuse, sodomy, assault consummated
by a battery, kidnapping and attempted kidnapping. He will serve 25 years
confinement based on a pretrial agreement.
“We are grateful that the families of
the KMC area finally have closure on
this,” said Lt. Gen. Tom Jones, U.S.
Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces
Africa vice commander and KMC
commander. “This predator caused a
service, from Page 1
Although he went to
America to go to school,
Karpawitz-Godt had to register for the draft at the time.
Even though he wasn’t a citizen, getting drafted was still a
possibility.
“One day I got a card that
said, ‘Greetings from the
Army,’” Karpawitz-Godt said.
“I thought, ‘I don’t know anybody in the Army. Who would
write me a letter from the
Army?’ My friend informed
me that I was drafted.”
Instead of waiting for the
draft, Karpawitz-Godt decided to go visit the Air Force
recruiting office after the
Korean War armistice was
signed.
It was in March 1956, at
age 27, when he became an
Airman in the U.S. Air Force.
After training to be a supply Airman, he was stationed
with the 48th Fighter Bomber
Wing in France. It was there
he met his future wife, something that would have never
been possible without the
military.
“At first she didn’t like me
at all, because I was a German
guy who was fighting against
them,” Karpawitz-Godt said.
lot of pain and suffering in our community, and we hope this conviction
provides healing and a sense of security for all those affected.”
Investigators pinpointed Merritt as
the sole perpetrator after forensic evidence analyzed by the U.S. Army
Criminal Investigation Laboratory
matched evidence found on some of
the children’s clothing, said Lt. Col.
Christopher J. Ouellette, Air Force
Office of Special Investigations, 13th
Field Investigations Squadron commander. This forensic evidence, combined with compiled witness testimonies and corroborated circumstantial
evidence, helped lead to his arrest at
F.E. Warren AFB.
“Since the suspect was already
at his next duty station, we had to
carefully coordinate our efforts with
stateside agencies,” Ouellette said.
“Building our case against him took
the full cooperation of military and
civilian agencies in Germany and the
U.S. It was a huge team effort.”
The 13th FIS at Ramstein initially
launched an investigation after a child
“Later on, she ended up
becoming my wife. We are
still married to this day and
celebrated our 50th anniversary a couple years ago.”
Karpawitz-Godt and his
wife moved around while in
the Air Force and eventually
ended in California where he
was a munitions maintenance
Airman.
“I was responsible for the
munitions records during
the Cuban (Missile) Crisis
and wasn’t allowed to leave
the base during that time,”
Karpawitz-Godt said. “We
slept on field cots next to the
safe in case we had to open it in
a split second. Once the Cuban
(Missile) Crisis was over, we
were released and I got orders
for Ramstein Air Base.”
While serving in his home
country, he found out it
was his turn to go to war.
Karpawitz-Godt was sent to
the war in Vietnam, where he
was responsible for ensuring
all aircraft in the Southeast
Asian theater were equipped
with all the necessary
supplies.
After serving in Vietnam,
Karpawitz-Godt was transferred back to Ramstein in
1974 as the Defense Logistics
Agency’s chief of defense
came forward in January 2012 to say a
man had pulled her into his car in the
Ramstein housing area and molested
her.
Several children in the Ramstein
and Vogelweh housing areas came
forward within that year to reveal kidnapping attempts and molestations.
Investigators spent several months
working around the clock, conducting
more than 600 interviews and collecting more than 250 forensic samples
from potential suspects.
These efforts, combined with the
multiple town halls held by the KMC
commander, led AFOSI agents to
receive more than 100 tips from KMC
residents, said Special Agent Michael
Tischer, 13th FIS, Major Crimes
Division.
“Without
direct
community
involvement, leadership support and
cooperation from the brave victims,
we would not have succeeded in identifying this sexual predator,” he said.
This collaborative effort ultimately revealed many more victims, and
investigation into Merritt’s actions
reutilization and marketing
office.
He was transferred to
several different squadrons
and offices during his time
at Ramstein until March
31, 1984, when he retired
on the flightline. Since then,
Karpawitz-Godt continued to
work for the Air Force as
a clothing issue management
clerk, because he loves to
meet new people through the
military, he said.
“The camaraderie, sticking
together and being a team is
huge. Nothing is more important than sticking together,”
Karpawitz-Godt said. “That’s
why I am still around the military; I enjoy meeting these young
people. It keeps me young.”
Being in and around the
military for more than 50
years, achieving two Bronze
Stars, a U.S. citizenship and
much more, the passionate
Vietnam veteran enjoys mentoring today’s Airmen.
“Be patient, because things
take time and there might
not be openings for what you
want, but eventually there will
be,” Karpawitz-Godt said. “If
you are persistent enough and
continue on that path, don’t
lose focus on what you want
to do and what you want to
here is ongoing, Ouellette said. If
witnesses and potential victims have
knowledge of assaults by Merritt or
other unknown perpetrators, they
should contact AFOSI.
Even though the threat of this particular predator has been eliminated
from the public, Ouellette stressed the
need for parents to continue educating
their children on the dangerous realities of the world.
“For example, parents could develop a ‘safe word’ for their children to
use if approached by strangers,” he
said. “This way, children won’t trust
someone claiming their parents sent
them. Merritt was able to lure some
children willingly into his vehicle.
We don’t want anyone to be fooled
again.”
If you see suspicious activity
around your housing area or notice an
unsupervised child being approached
by a vehicle or an unknown adult,
step in and prevent the situation from
escalating. Then report it to your local
security forces unit. Vigilance is every
person’s responsibility.

be. That is most important.”
As for Karpawitz-Godt’s
future, he wants to move to
California next year where
he can stay home to take care
of his wife. He will, however, still be in touch with his
military family because he
plans to move to the Enlisted
Village.

Airmen retrace World War II footsteps
Photos by Airman 1st Class Michael Stuart
Airmen from the 86th Airlift Wing and their families
participated in the annual Dead Man’s Ridge Walk
March 23 in Houmont, Belgium. The walk honors
the men of the 17th Airborne Division who marched
through the Ardennes 69 years ago. The Airmen
retraced the footsteps in an 8K and 18K walk. Each
year the event funds the flight and accommodations
for one veteran to come back to the site where they
fought and pay their respects. This year, it was World
War II veteran John Leather.

New technology connects air defenders over thousands of miles

The task at hand seemed like it
couldn’t be done. However, Col.
Gregory Brady, commander of 10th
Army Air and Missile Defense
Command, insisted it could.
Soldiers with 10th AAMDC, based
out of Rhine Ordnance Barracks, and
Soldiers with the 32nd Army Air and
Missile Defense Command, located
at Fort Bliss, Texas, have done something that hasn’t been done before.
It’s called Hardware in the Loop, and
the new training and command and
control capability promises to change
missile defense training and operations for the better.
HWIL is an experimental technical procedure that allows air defense
units to digitally communicate over
vast distances.
In this case, the procedure allowed
Patriot Air Defense missile units from
Fort Bliss to digitally communicate
with and control Patriot units located
at ROB — more than 5,000 miles
apart.
“The challenge was the systems we’re using weren’t originally

designed to function this way. We’re
pushing this technology. The distances we normally operate are significantly shorter,” said Lt. Col. Jennifer
Schulke, 10th AAMDC operations
officer.
Lt. Col. Brian Bowen, 10th
AAMDC chief of staff, highlighted
the historic importance of the advances the new system provides.
“This is very exciting,” Bowen
said. “It’s not every day you get to
add a page to Army doctrine.”
The 10th AAMDC and 32nd
AAMDC Soldiers are doing just that
and added a new capability to their
tool bags. The missile defense organizations are now able to train and
conduct operations unit-to-unit across
5,000 miles.
“Prior to fielding, HWIL units
had to be co-located to train together properly, but not anymore,” said
Maj. Ernest Harrell, executive officer
with 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense
Artillery Regiment, 10th AAMDC.
Once the experimentation is complete, units will be able to train and
operate without being co-located.
Additionally, once this comprehensive testing is absolute, the units can
submit their findings and procedures
to the U.S. Army’s Training and
Doctrine Command for further use
and inclusion in technical publications.
“A lot of firsts (are) going on here,”
said Chief Warrant Officer 3 James
Dunlop, systems technician with the
32nd AAMDC. “Before, if we wanted to train units we had to move
our people and equipment to another
facility. Now we can conduct this
training in our own backyard. It’s a
win-win.”
Locally, the innovative tests took
place in a newly upgraded simulation
lab on ROB connected to real Patriot
missile battery equipment. At Fort
Bliss, the connection was made in a
similar lab with similar equipment.
“Anything can be done. It’s just
computers and software. It’s really
about time and money when it comes
down to it, both of which we never
have enough of,” said Maj. Rich
Dixon, simulations officer with 32nd
AAMDC.

Mass casualty training strengthens first responder skills
Photos by Airman 1st Class Michael Stuart
The 86th Medical Group hosted a mass casualty training
March 13 on Ramstein. During the training Airmen played
the role of patients suffering during a crisis while members of the medical group provided immediate care and
transported them to a medical clinic as quickly as possible.
Within about five seconds, first responders triage a patient
by looking for respiration and perfusion and check the
mental status of each victim to determine the amount of
care they need.

“We are going to have Army
military police, Air Force
security forces, Army medics, Army firefighters, the Air
Force flight surgeon, chaplains and civilians present.
Members of the Romanian
military will also be observing our personnel as they
engage in this exercise.”
The goal of the exercise
was to test the capabilities
and response time of all
emergency response personnel. The first to respond to
the emergency call were military police Soldiers from the
202nd MP Co. based in Fort
Bliss, Texas, who arrived on
scene within five minutes of
the call. After neutralizing the
shooter, they took control of
the situation.
“I believe that active-shooter training is always important, because it is something
we as military police may
encounter,” said Pfc. Tyheem
A. Alphonso, military policeman from the 202nd MP Co.,
who neutralized the shooter.
With the shooter neutralized, medics and firefighters
rushed to the scene to administer medical care and coor-
alties. Soldiers assigned to
the 21st Theater Sustainment
Command’s 557th Medical
Company, 421st MultiMedical Battalion, 30th
Medical Brigade assessed
each casualty’s medical
condition while members
of the 513th Firefighting
Detachment, 20th Engineer
Brigade set up casualty collection points outside. Personnel
from all branches assisted in
carrying the wounded to the
casualty collection points.
While the casualties waited outside for transportation,
chaplains visited with each of
them to provide counsel.
“We wanted this to be as
realistic as possible, so we
moved through the simulated
casualties to provide counsel,”
said Chaplain (Capt.) Thomas
J. Gentry, 875th Engineer
Battalion. “It is important for
us to know what to do in these
scenarios as well.”
Within one hour of the
emergency call, the exercise
was complete. All personnel
involved gathered in the theater
to discuss ways to improve in
the future. All involved agreed
this was a valuable training exercise and aided in the
base’s future readiness, said
Sgt. Daniel J. Blackhorse,
military policeman assigned to
the 202nd MP Co.
“This was very important,
because active shooter scenarios are something we have
seen on Army installations,”
Blackhorse said. “This was
great training for everyone
involved.”

EAS commander pilots joint team to freedom in Romania
Story and photo by
Sgt. Maj. Michael Pintagro
21st Theater Sustainment
Command Public Affairs
MIHAIL KOGALNICEANU
AIR BASE, Romania — No man
contributed more to the first repatriation mission through Mihail
Kogalniceanu Air Base, Romania,
than Air Force Lt. Col. Todd McCoy.
Service loyalties notwithstanding,
100 Soldiers of 1st Battalion, 26th
Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st
Infantry Division, applauded the performance of the Air Force officer as
their “freedom bird” touched down
in Romania Feb. 22 after a five-hour
flight from Afghanistan. Key leaders and warfighters from four services, three nations and two components contributed enormously to the
creation and operation of the joint,
combined facility at MK Air Base,
but the commander of the 780th
Expeditionary Airlift Squadron took
things a step farther — he not only
led the organization that operates the
airfield but personally piloted the
C-17A Globemaster III transporting
the troops from Afghanistan.
“I’ve been flying transit missions
for over a decade, but even now,
there’s nothing more fulfilling than
bringing the guys back home,” McCoy
said. “Being a part of that first mission
and seeing the smiles on their faces
when we reached MK and the guys
realized they were a big step closer to
home was truly awesome.”
The Saturday night transit flight
held special meaning for the 38-yearold Air Force leader and pilot due to
its circumstances, but McCoy spends
almost as much time in the air as on
solid ground.
Born in coal country in Beckley,
W.Va., and raised in the Charleston
area, McCoy showed more aptitude
for flying than walking as a young
child.
“I had toys and model airplanes all
over the place,” he said. “Every Lego
block I owned was used to make airplanes.”
At a time when most of his peers
planned to serve alongside Batman
or the Incredible Hulk rather than
Soldiers or Marines, the 4-year-old
McCoy told his mother confidently,
“I am going to attend the Air Force
Academy and fly airplanes.”
A strong student who lettered in
four sports at Nitro High School —
named for the nitroglycerine industry
that exploded locally in support of
the First World War — McCoy finished well ahead of the pack in the
classroom and the pool, as well as

on the soccer field and cross-country
track. But success, sports and girls
never completely eclipsed his soaring
ambition. He pursued and ultimately
secured a coveted slot at the Air Force
Academy through the office of thenU.S. Sen. Robert Byrd. Three weeks
after graduating high school in 1993,
the young cadet arrived in Colorado
Springs, Colo., for basic training.
“It was definitely a learning experience going from life in a small town in
West Virginia to life as a student at the
Air Force Academy,” he said.
McCoy clearly embraced and internalized the academy vision.
“I learned about honor and leadership. These were some of our key
tenets, and they were essential to success at the academy and in the Air
Force,” he said.
But life even at the Air Force
Academy included its share of lighter moments. Unsurprisingly, the
“Family Feud” and “Star Trek” jokes
that accompanied him throughout
his career flourished amid the campus social milieu. McCoy learned to
defuse the humor by mining the vein
even more skillfully.
“I would tell them, ‘I never met
a Hatfield I liked,’” he said with a
smile.
Like their Army counterparts, Air
Force cadets compete academically
for their choice of branch. Identified
with one of the most prestigious of
military — or civilian for that matter
— occupations, pilot slots normally
attract stiff competition. McCoy performed superbly as a student, but he
said this made little difference in his
career path.
“There was a pilot shortage when I
graduated,” he said. “So anyone who
wanted to be a pilot that year and met
the requirements made it.”
After six months of general aviation training, pilots “track select” for
specific aircraft. Based on his desire
to fly passenger missions to and from
dirt runways and fond memories of
the small military planes that “flew
around Charleston all the time” during his boyhood, McCoy selected the
C-130. He devoted years to mastering the aircraft and its missions, flying around 400 hours per year and
progressing from student to pilot to
instructor and evaluator. Then-Capt.
McCoy’s tenure as a C-130 pilot
at Pope Army Airfield, adjacent to
sprawling Fort Bragg in south-central North Carolina, brought him into
close contact with Soldiers conducting airdrop and transportation missions. He forged a meaningful professional bond with the paratroopers he
supported during “hundreds” of airdrop missions.
“The fact that we have lives in
our hands when that green light goes
on is not lost on any pilot,” he said.
“Airdrop missions involve serious
risk to the guys going out the back of
the aircraft. We take our commitment
to them very seriously — we take it
to heart.”
Selected for promotion to major,
McCoy moved on to larger roles and
larger aircraft. He commenced training on a new system, but from a much
broader base of knowledge and experience.
“It was just a matter of learning
the nuances of the aircraft and what it
brings to the fight,” McCoy said.
Interestingly, the C-17, now widely
viewed as the primary inter-theater
transport aircraft, “was meant for
oversized and outsized unconventional cargo. It’s not the most effective
passenger mover, but it’s the safest
because of its defensive systems and
tactical capabilities.”
McCoy and other key leaders,
including the mission’s senior Army
and Air Force officers, arrived at MK
in early January. They found a company of engineers from the 21st Theater
Sustainment Command, a handful
of planners, base support cadre and
Romanian officials hard at work but
far from an even match against the
tidal wave of transit missions projected for February and March. As
the small but able team of 21st TSC,
Black Sea Area Support Team and
Romanian staff accomplished daily
missions on a shoestring and supporting staff trickled in, leaders established a conceptual framework that
blossomed into initial and, ultimately,
full-operational capability during late
January and February.

pilot, from page 8
McCoy’s EAS took charge of airfield
operations — essentially the main effort for
a passenger transit mission.
“We execute the combat airlift of passengers to and from Afghanistan,” he said. “And
that means not only the airlift piece but the
maintenance of the aircraft, aerial port operations, loading and unloading of commercial
wide body aircraft as well as the C-17s, and
command and control — everything necessary to support these aircraft and the onward
movement mission.”
Like so many of his previous missions,
command of the 780th evolved into an
unorthodox but immensely rewarding joint,
combined journey.
“The 780th has to be the most extraordinary EAS on the Air Force map,” he said,
noting his 130-Airman team includes not
only the aircrew and staff that form the core
of any comparable organization but assets
normally associated with a contingency
response element. “The Army provides a lot
of our life support infrastructure,” he said.
“But since we also have specific missionoriented requirements, we also have organic
medical, maintenance and aerial port assets
more akin to what you’d have in a CRE.”
The unique Air Force leadership culture
demands technical mastery as well as administrative excellence from its senior personnel.
In other services, leadership, planning and
organization tend to crowd out technical missions. Air Force officers — especially pilots
— can’t afford to neglect their technical craft.
McCoy remains an avid aviator as well as
a squadron-level commander. He mentors,
trains and evaluates pilots and crews, typically combining flights with developmental missions. McCoy said he tries to lift off weekly,
usually serving as a mentor, instructor and/or
evaluator during the flights.
“In any command you want to be credible
in commanding the mission, and part of that
is being proficient in your main competencies,” he said. “For me that includes piloting
the aircraft. It’s part of my skill-set as a pilot
and even more so as a commander.”
The grueling days, incessant flights, long
hours and still longer tour might ground a
lesser leader. McCoy signed on for an entire
year in contrast with the Airmen and most
of his Army colleagues, who typically serve
tenures measured in weeks. Due largely to
the efforts of versatile, innovative leaders
who fly airplanes as an additional duty, the
MK passenger transit mission has taken
off, gained altitude and shows no signs of
losing momentum. As seriously as he takes
his command, his mission and his responsibilities as an aviator, McCoy appreciates the
human dimension to the operation — unless,
perhaps, a Hatfield enters his airspace.
“The mission is fun and it’s only fun
because of the great people who are here,”
he said. “Everyone wants to get the mission
accomplished, and it’s that can-do spirit that
sets us up for success. That’s the attitude that
keeps me going, and I think that keeps all of
us at MK going.”

Aerial porter loads 1,500 missions to set record
by Airman 1st Class Holly Mansfield
86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Being part of the largest dual-role aerial port expeditor program in the Air Force can bring any aerial
porter a huge workload. The APEX program was created more than nine years ago by the U.S. Air Force
Expeditionary Center as a way to improve cargo operations in the Air Force.
When the program started, leaders looked for people
with the drive for knowledge to become load directors.
Little did leaders know that they were going to get a
visit from a humble man with a big dream.
Realizing he wanted to work around Air Force aircraft, at the age of 47, Kasper Chevalier, 721st Aerial
Port Squadron load director, and his wife packed up
their belongings and moved to Ramstein to pursue his
dream.
Since being trained as a load director for the APEX
program in 2007, Chevalier took on the task of directing the loading of 1,500 aircraft setting a record for
the most APEX missions completed by any Air Force
civilian. These aircraft carried more than 17,000 tons
of cargo without the aircrew being present during the
operation. Using this system he was able to save more
than 2,000 aircrew duty hours.
“The APEX program provides aerial port management flexibility in scheduling manpower and resources
for aircraft loading/unloading while aircrew isn’t
there,” said Master Sgt. Justin Hemken, 721st APS
NCOIC of ramp services. “APEX allows aerial porters to spread their workload out over a great period of
time, thus eliminating operational bottlenecks. It is the
great equalizer when considering the balance of equipment, manpower and airfield operating hours.”
Having a great program is one thing, but finding
professional and proficient technicians to use it makes
it powerful. Since the beginning, Chevalier has shown
his mentors and peers he has the drive and determination to get the job done.

hildren of the KMC participated in a
new weekly Warrior Program allowing them to learn life skills and build
on personal growth goals.
The Warrior Program is a mentorship group
for male military dependents ranging from 13
to 18 years old. The program teaches them to
be a warrior on the battlefield of life.
As life warriors, an important thing for them
to have by their side is personal decision-making skills, a strong code of ethics, high selfesteem and a tidy appearance.
For these warriors, the battlefield is anywhere there’s something impeding their life
goals or dreams.
“Their war is against any distractions that
won’t allow them to reach their full potential,”
said Montaque Bussey, Ramstein youth programs teen coordinator. “Their weapons for
fighting this war are their minds and their will
to succeed.”
Bussey said the enemies attempting to deter
them come from within.
“They have to know themselves,” Bussey
said. “They have to know what their purpose
is and what drives them so they can stay on
track and reach the goals they’ve set for themselves.”
During the program, the young warriors are
faced with numerous adversities, obstacles and
changes in their lives that they need to overcome to work toward achieving success.
The program objective is to raise successful
young men who will lead their families and
communities and inspire those around them to
become warriors.
“These young combatants exemplify good
moral character, respect for authority, and
are the example for their peers,” Bussey said.
“They specialize at life warfare and represent
professionalism at a young age.”
The success of the program has spawned a
similar program for young female dependents
called the Jewel program.
“We are building motivated young people
who aspire to do better and be greater people,”
said Sara Hatcher, youth program director.
“Implementing a program for the young ladies
allows us to spread the message to all of our
young people so they can grow into successful
men and women.”
The program allows them to mitigate the
negative effects of challenges they face in
their everyday lives and focus it on positive
community-building skills and to represent
themselves as true warriors.

ATC Airmen aim for checkmate

Sunday Worship 11 AM
A small room with walls made of glass
stands 11 stories in the air, filled with only a
few air traffic controllers and the quiet chatter
of their radios.
Tracking, coordinating and directing aircraft coming in and out of Germany, air
traffic controllers from the 86th Operations
Support Squadron place each piece as though
playing an elaborate game of chess. While
they look out their window planning their next
move, the sun begins to rise from the hills
casting a long shadow of nostalgia for a home
far away.
“I love working here in Germany,” said
Senior Airman Israel Cruz, 86th OSS air traffic controller. “There are no words that can
express how amazing the view is up here.
Although I’m away from my family and
friends, they understand the role I play in the
Air Force and they are proud of me for it.”
Air traffic controllers at Ramstein are
responsible for providing safe and efficient
air traffic flow by policing the movement of
aircraft, issuing safety alerts and giving pilots
a clear and precise picture of what is in the airspace around them.
“You have to be able to think on your feet
and try to anticipate what could happen next,”
Cruz said. “It’s a strategy game in a way, but
unlike a game, our pieces are people and we
can’t just restart if we lose a life.”
With a washout rate of approximately 50
percent from technical school to their first
base, air traffic controllers work more as a
close-knit family than colleagues.
“There aren’t a lot of us in the tower,” said
Senior Airman Jeremii Van Komen, 86th OSS
air traffic controller. “Making it that much
more important for us to work together, without the constant guidance from our peers and
leadership we wouldn’t be able to keep up with
all the aircraft.”
Learning the ins and outs of the job as well
as the base’s specific air traffic regulations
can be a lengthy and daunting task for a new
Airman, but once the approximately year-long
training is completed, a badge is awarded to
prove they have moved to the next level in
their career.

a rated controller is a significant milestone
in our career field,” said Airman 1st Class
John Moreno, 86th OSS air traffic controller. “While other Airmen may receive their
occupational badge after technical school we
have to wait until we arrive at our first base.
From there we continue our training, and once
everything is completed, there is a ceremony
where we get the badge pinned on for the first
time.
“It’s not just another part of the uniform
we get to show off,” Moreno continued. “It
identifies us as the few who were able to complete all the challenges along the way and are
now entrusted to control the traffic of various
multimillion dollar airframes.”
From the day they arrive, throughout
their upgrade training, to the day they leave
Ramstein, the traffic controllers here have a
constant flow of airframes. In one year more
than 25,000 aircraft will go through Ramstein,
making their chess game in the sky a neverending match.
“We are broken up into three shifts to ensure
the safety of the pilots and their aircrafts all
day every day,” said Senior Airman Kevin
Xaynhachack, 86th OSS air traffic controller.
“While coming home during the middle of
the night to a sleeping family may be rough,
I am lucky that my loved ones understand the
sacrifices we as controllers have to make, and
I am grateful for them. I really love everything
about the job. This is what I wanted to do my
whole life, and when my little ones run up to
me asking, ‘Daddy, daddy did you talk to airplanes today?’ to see the excitement in their
eyes because of what I do makes having this
job a dream come true.”

Toastmasters take fear
out of public speaking

G
lossophobia, or the fear of public speaking, is a common social
phobia millions of people suffer from. However, one organization on Ramstein is literally speaking out to help others
overcome it.
Twice a month a group of Airmen, Soldiers and civilians gather in the
conference room of the Ramstein Northside Chapel to hone their public
speaking skills. They are members of the Ramstein Toastmasters International
Club.
Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that specializes in public speaking and leadership skills development. The organization has clubs spread across more than 120 countries around the world. The
Ramstein club was established on June 8, 1957.
David Sears, vice president of membership, said the meetings offer a relaxed
and supportive environment where speakers can feel comfortable.
“It’s a good place to
rehearse, learn and practice
how to deliver your ideas to
a military audience as well as
a civilian audience,” he said.
Sears has been a member of Toastmasters for 25
years — 10 of them with the
Ramstein club.
“This gives everyone the
opportunity to learn how to
pull out key points and illustrate the ideas that you really
want people to take home
with them,” he said.
Toastmasters members are
given two different study
guides to help them effectively organize and deliver
their speeches. Afterward,
peer evaluators provide constructive feedback on each
presentation.
Club members all have
varying degrees of public
speaking experience. Some

speaking and leadership skills.
Irizarry, vice president of
public relations, joined the club nearly two years ago to polish his professional
presentation skills and communicate more effectively with all types of listeners.
“The best thing about being a Toastmaster for me is the ability to communicate with just about anyone,” Irizarry said. “I can articulate my thoughts as
opposed to just trying to find the right thing to say, regardless if I’m talking to
a fellow Airman or a high ranking officer, church leader, government leader or
just one of my peers. I don’t have the same fear that I would have had before
I joined Toastmasters, because I’ve gotten used to talking to so many different
people.”
The Ramstein Toastmasters International Club meets at noon the first and
third Tuesday of every month (with the exception of U.S. holidays and Air
Force family days) in the Ramstein Northside Chapel conference room.
Membership is open to anyone 18 years or older with access to the installation.

“Mr. Chevalier’s drive has attained him a title very few APEX’ers will
ever see,” said Patricia McClure, 721st APS capability forecaster and former
APEX instructor. “He was one of those students you can never forget because
of his personality and ambition. When Kasper reached his 500th APEX load
milestone in 2010, it kindled a bit of competition between Ramstein and
Charleston APEX’ers ... but I believe Kasper has won.”
Having a passion for the job
can make a person given a rare
opportunity very grateful to the
people helping them throughout
their career.
“I love doing my job,” Chevalier
said. “I love working around the
aircraft, and I’m thankful that I’ve
been given this chance to have a
job that most will never be able
to do.”

“Kasper is a unique individual,” Kasper Chevalier (left), 721st Aerial Port Squadron
Hemken said. “Like us military load director, helps members of the 721st APS
members, it is more than just a job load cargo onto a Joint Base Lewis-McChord C-17
to him. He truly cares about what Globemaster III March 4 on Ramstein. Chevalier
he is doing and the impact he has. recently achieved his 1,500th cargo load.
He understands that the cargo he is moving is ammunition for a comrade in a
foxhole, a shelter to sleep in, or food to eat. Also, and most impressively, he
cares about the development of our Airmen. He teaches them the right way to
do business — by the book. He wants them to be experts.”
Using his passion for the job and determination to teach others the proper way to complete the mission, this self-described “little man from the
Netherlands” reached his dream of working with Air Force aircraft which
translated into a successful mission for all members of the 721st APS.

Divergent (PG-13) — In this world, people are divided into distinct factions based
on human virtues. Tris Prior is warned she
is Divergent and will never fit into any one
group. When she discovers a conspiracy by
a faction leader to destroy all Divergents,
Tris must learn to trust in the mysterious
Four, and together they must find out what
makes being Divergent so dangerous before
it’s too late.
Starring Shailene Woodley and Theo
James.
Muppets Most Wanted (PG) — The
Muppets go on a global tour, selling out
grand theaters in some of Europe’s most
exciting destinations. But mayhem follows
the Muppets overseas as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine
— the world’s No. 1 criminal and a dead
ringer for Kermit — and his dastardly sidekick Dominic.
Starring Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey.
