Annual Report - Easter Seals
2008 Annual Report Easter Seals Central and Southeast Ohio, Inc. Easter Seals Annual Report 2008 Celebrating Growth Dear Friends of Easter Seals: Every day the children and adults we serve achieve successes and reach milestones amidst major challenges. The success we see is the result of hard work and dedication to their goals. Here at Easter Seals, our goal is to provide exceptional services for children and adults with disabilities to live, learn, work, and play in their communities. Like those we serve, our organization faced considerable challenges in 2008. Despite the tough economic times, we continue providing the exceptional services people Karin A. Zuckerman have come to expect from Easter Seals. In CEO fact, in spite of these challenges, we were able to expand existing programs and add new services to meet growing needs in our community. In June 2008, less than one year after breaking ground, we moved into our new home in Columbus. This wonderful facility offers two additional early childhood education classrooms, and doubles the amount of therapy space previously available. This extra space allows us to expand our education & summer programming as well as implement a life skills approach to therapy. Our new home has also afforded us the opportunity to create programs for children with autism spectrum disorders and their families. With the help of a grant from CVS All Kids Can Fund, we are offering respite services so that families can take a much needed break from the stress of raising a child with an autism spectrum disorder. We have also added social groups and educational opportunities for families and professionals within central Ohio. We look forward to a new year and the opportunity to provide innovative programming that adapts as needs change within the community. Our efforts would not be possible without the support of our community. Together we make it possible for more children and adults to reach their full potential. On behalf of Easter Seals and the families we serve, thank you. Zuckerman, Chief Executive Officer Rob DuVall, Director of Marketing Pandora Shaw-Dupras, Director of Adult, Senior and Community Services Benedicta Enrile, MD, Medical Director Ron Wurtz, Director of Finance Jimmy Crum Throughout his life Jimmy Crum became recognized not only for his bold jackets and thrilling sportscasts, but also for his dedication to helping children with disabilities in central Ohio. As host of the Easter Seals telethon for 21 years, he displayed great joy watching each child overcome obstacles in order to reach milestones of success. He was able to help others see the abilities of those living with disabilities. After retiring in 1994, Jimmy started the Labor of Love Golf Tournament, raising funds for three Central Ohio organizations serving children with disabilities, including Easter Seals. His passion and dedication to charity did not go unnoticed. He was a true friend of Easter Seals, and will be remembered fondly by all. Mission Easter Seals provides exceptional services for people with disabilities or special needs and their families to live, learn, work and play in their communities. Vision We envision all people having choices and opportunities to reach their potential. George Igel Those who knew George Igel knew his commitment to work, family, and community. A quiet leader, George gave his time, money, and expertise to the causes he believed in without expecting anything in return. His efforts did not go unnoticed. We would like to honor and remember George Igel as part of the Easter Seals family. In addition to monetary contributions, George donated labor to clear the Easter Seals parking lot in inclement weather, care for the plants in the courtyard, and build a playground for all the children who used the facility. He volunteered his time with children in the pool and loved to share in the successes of each child who came through the doors. “People give of their knowledge instead of their hearts,” he once said. “I like to see the people I’m helping.” George first became involved with Easter Seals after a battle with polio, which he contracted at age 26. Despite his disability, George built a successful business, raised a family of five, and contributed to the community. His commitment to excellence and drive to succeed was undeniable, and it is representative of what Easter Seals is all about. George had a hands on approach to giving. He believed it was important to give not only dollars, but time. Today, Easter Seals is stronger because of his generosity and the selfless gift of his time. The Story of Easter Seals Since 1919, Easter Seals has been providing exceptional services for people with disabilities or special needs and their families to live, learn, work, and play in their communities. We envision all people having choices and opportunities to reach their potential. 1930’s and 40’s • Ross County Society for Crippled Children and Adults founded, becoming one of the first Adult Day Centers in the country. • Washington County Society for Crippled Children opened its doors. 1950’s and 60’s • New Franklin County Treatment Center opens at 555 South Monroe. 1970’s • Franklin County Society for Crippled Children opens new treatment center located at 565 Children’s Drive West. 1919 1934 1944 1950 1952 Founded by Edgar Allen to help children with disabilities Conducted first Easter “seal” fund raising campaign Broadened mission to help adults Achieved nationwide reach Officially incorporated lily into Easter Seals symbol 1980’s and 90’s • Easter Seals holds its last telethon in 1997. • The name changes to Easter Seals Central and Southeast Ohio, Inc. to better represent the territory served. 2000 and Today • New adult day programs are added in Knox and Ross Counties. • Easter Seals opens new Central Ohio facility to increase education and therapy services and begin offering programs for children with autism in 2008. 1967 1984 1990 1999 2008 Adopted the name Easter Seals Served more than 1 million people annually Helped pass Americans with Disabilities Act into law Received top recognition by National Health Council for 20th consecutive year Expanded respite and autism services CVS Caremark All Kids Can For families of a child with autism spectrum disorder, spending time with other children, going on a date, or even finding time for groceries can be a challenge. With the help of a grant from CVS All Kids Can fund, Easter Seals is providing respite services for Friday Night Date Nights, Saturdays, and full weekends. Respite provides families with the opportunity to take a break from daily routines and stresses of caring for a child with autism, with the comfort of knowing their child is in a safe and caring environment. CVS Caremark has been a critical Easter Seals partner for more than a decade. We applaud CVS Caremark for its commitment to children with disabilities and remain grateful for the impact we are able to make in the lives of these children through CVS Caremark’s support. Columbus Blue Jackets Life Skills Center For years, Easter Seals has been helping children develop balance, coordination, fine and gross motor skills, memory, and social skills through our outpatient therapy programs. In the new state of the art Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation Life Skills Center, children will learn these skills in a different setting, allowing them to take the skills they learn at Easter Seals and apply them at home. Children can play hockey, practice taking coats and shoes on and off in their own locker room, learn to button coats and tie shoes on a life-size Stinger, play Wii, and practice real life skills in our appartment! Therapy feels like play, and children enjoy coming in for therapy. Since opening the Life Skills Center, Blue Jackets players KristianOle Tollefson and Mike Commodore have shown their support by attending therapy sessions with our children. We would like to recognize the Blue Jackets and the Blue Jackets Foundation for their continued support. They have been true leaders in the central Ohio community. Event Highlights Annually, we must raise nearly $1 million to cover uncompensated services. Eighty cents of every dollar raised goes directly to programs and services. A significant portion of these funds are raised through Easter Seals signature events and other events hosted by community partners in which proceeds are donated to Easter Seals. Romancing the Grape May In its seventh year, we honored Sheila and Gene Smith and the Igel family for their generous support of Easter Seals. Over 800 participants enjoyed hand-selected wines and delicious hors d’oeuvres. F.O.P. Bowl-A-Thon February For years the Fraternal Order of Police has sponsored this winter event to raise money for children with disabilities. This money supports children 12 months to three years of age in our Early Childhood Education Program. Kroger A&W Root Beer Float Days July For more than 22 years, The Kroger Co., Columbus Division, has sponsored this event on behalf of Easter Seals. This year, 79 central Ohio Kroger stores scooped root beer floats to raise money for people with disabilities. Tennithon February Hosted by the Olympic Indoor Tennis Club, this six-hour marathon of tennis is a favorite February event. Walk with Me August A fun, family fitness walk that is short on mileage, but big on heart. This national event brings together walkers young and old to help increase awareness for people with disabilities and special needs. Pepsi Family Fun Pass April-August For the third year, Pepsi partnered with Easter Seals to offer the Pepsi Family Fun Pass. The Pass included 4 tickets to any Columbus Crew home game, 4 tickets to a Columbus Clippers home game and one family 4-pack of Magic Mountain activity passes. All proceeds benefit Easter Seals. Festival of Trees December A festive way to celebrate the holiday season in the Mid-Ohio Valley! Over 30 decorators put their hearts and souls into creating beautifully decorated trees and wreaths available in an exciting live auction. Benefits Camp Challenge and Equipment Purchase Program. Camp Challenge Juanita and Jessie Each year Camp Challenge provides children with disabilities the opportunity to experience all the joys of camp in a safe, barrier-free environment. They sing by campfire, roast marshmallows, swim and participate in the annual camp dance! In addition to the lovely site at Camp Hervida, volunteers like Juanita Duff and Jessie Cline make camp possible. This mother and daughter team have helped with camp for over six years. “A memo came across my desk that a nurse was needed or else camp would have to be cancelled,” Juanita said when asked how she learned about camp. “I did not need to be asked twice. I cannot imagine a summer without camp,” she continues. Since volunteering at Camp Challenge, Juanita and Jessie have also sat on the event committee for the Festival of Trees, a holiday tree auction to raise money so that children with disabilities in the Mid-Ohio Valley can attend Camp Challenge. The Sisters of St. Joseph The Sisters of St. Joseph have played an important role in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Since 1996 they have offered grants to support community initiatives helping families lead healthier, more active lives. This year, Easter Seals received a $7,500 grant in order to expand our Equipment Purchase and Home Modification Programs in the region. The Equipment Purchase and Home Modification program provides funding for those in the community to purchase the specialized equipment they need or to modify their homes in order to increase accessibility for those with disabilities. Previously, in conjunction with the Marietta Shrine Hale Trust, we have been able to offer these programs to children in Washington County, Ohio. With the aid of the grant from the Sisters of St. Joseph, we were able to expand this service to allow funding for both children and adults within Athens, Meigs, and Washington Counties in Ohio and in Wood County, West Virginia. The Sisters of St. Joseph have been true partners in the community. Their generosity has allowed us to serve more children and adults with disabilities, allowing more people to reach their full potential.
