Sam Swope- Fueled
by a Commitment
to Community
Service
Noble Sam Swope, Chairman and Founder
of Sam Swope Auto Group, LLC, this
year’s winner of the Advertising Federation
of Louisville’s annual award. Some might
say the “the winner is always in the driver’s
seat.”
First bestowed in 1951, the Advertising
Federation of Louisville’s “Louisvillian of
the Year” is the oldest award of its kind
in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. This
outstanding achievement recognizes the
generous personal contributions of an
individual to the life of the community in
the areas of civic, educational, or business
progress in recent years. This award is
for someone whose contribution is above
and beyond the responsibility of his or her
chosen profession.
The award was given to Noble Swope on
July 17th. Congratulations, Sam!

Jack Wilson, PP becomes Editor
Emeritus
Kosair Shriners has enjoyed the dedicated efforts of Jack Wilson, PP as Editor
of our newsletter for many years. His service to Shrinedom and Freemasonry has
resulted in many recognitions and honors. At his request we have a new Editor for
the newsletter, Randy Coe. Jack continues to serve as Editor Emeritus. Preparations
have been underway for more than a year for the change in Editor.
THANK YOU, JACK!
The Mystic Shrine at Kosair is enjoying
a wonderful year in 2009. The fellowship
and fun rivals that of any organization
in our region. Our temple is filled with
happy members and guests nearly each
Friday night for the buffet dinner and
entertainment.
Imperial Convention Brings
Changes to our Shrine
hospitals
The 2009 Imperial Convention has
come and gone. With it went a lot of
the “old ways” of thinking about how
Shriners can help children. No longer will
the Shriners Hospitals for Children be
stuck in old fashioned, out-of-date modes
of operation. The assembled nobles and
our leadership have decided to seek to
help more children by evolving the care
we provide and how we provide it. Kosair
Charities was once again mentioned at
the Imperial as a tremendous success
for children.
Kosair Shriners were well represented
in the Imperial parade with the elected
Divan, the Most Worshipful Grand
Master of Kentucky, the chairman of
the Shriners Hospitals for Children –
Lexington unit, and many other Kosair
nobles participating including Larry
Burton our associate member who is
now Chief Rabban at Syria Temple in
Pittsburgh. Nobles Alan Miller, Mike
Holt, Jim Hatfield, Tom Cissell, Vene
Weissert, and Bob Dadisman brought
our lighted fez and jeep and trailer all
the way to Texas to show off Kosair to
the Imperial officers and the thousands
of people watching the parade. Thanks,
nobles. Photos are on our www.kosair.
com website.

York Rite – Kosair Shrine Unity Class
a success for Freemasonry
Our York Rite – Kosair Shrine Unity
Class received sixty-seven new men into the

are “young” and with families. One hundred
and fifteen men became York Rite members.
Sixty-nine men became a Kosair Shriner.
The Unity Class was a magnificent success

sacrifice of many Master Masons made it
possible. To just name a few: Most Worshipful

Kosair Temple Ball
Our annual formal ball will be held on
September 26 in the Grand Ballroom at
the Galt House Hotel and Suites. The Ball
committee has planned a very elegant and
enjoyable affair with various entertainers
performing. We would love everyone to
attend. The Kosair Shriners are continuing
their relationship with the Galt House and
the Crowne Plaza (formerly known as the
Executive West) of nearly fifty years. We
appreciate the willingness of the hotel to
provide their marvelous facility for no more
than our approved budget. We hope to have a
great turnout for a very pleasurable evening.
These Nobles Have Something
in Common
What do these nobles have in common?
Don Flatt, Bill Lewellyn, Walt Oster, Denny
Hardin, Scott Watts, Don Smith, Jack Kiper,
their families. Watch for other names to be
mentioned in the future as there are many
more good men making a positive difference.
The Black Camel
The Black Camel has come too often to our
Kosair oasis. Gone to their heavenly home
are fine men such as: Herb Chapman, Mike
Brown, Dan Cook, Charlie Casey, Stewart
Bland, Jim Heine, John Gognat Sr, Cecil
Cox, Jerry Markovich PP of Murat and
new member of Kosair, Bob Stockler, Lenny
Sewell PP and many others. Their passing
reminds us this mortal existence is fleeting.
We are reminded we should strive in our daily
endeavors to be worthy until our time comes
to hopefully journey to The Unseen Temple.

Brass Band News
By Ernie Sanders
After a successful summer schedule,
the Kosair Brass Band is preparing for
upcoming Shrine and community events.
Noble Lou Vernon has done a marvelous
job with the Dance Band this year playing
several concerts, dances, and a wedding
reception. The Dance Band is blessed
to have such a talented professional jazz
musician leading them!
Any nobles wanting to play a musical
instrument with the Brass Band are
welcome to join our band. The fellowship
is a lot of fun and the musical practices
and performances are very rewarding.
The Kosair Shrine Brass Band and Dance
Band rehearsal is every Thursday night
at 7:30 at Kosair Shriners.
The Kosair Motor
Corps
By Robert Owens
Brother Nobles, just got back from the
10th annual Sam Swope Road Rally, man was
it big. The weather was perfect. I think one
count put the total raised at over $90,000
dollars. The motor cycle was won by Miss
Rachelle Hood of Louisville. Space does not
allow the Motor Corps to thank every one.
But a few who deserve mention are.
Don Smith, David Owen, Walt Oster, Roger
Dabney, and of course the Man who makes it
all possible, Mister Sam Swope. If I missed
some one let me know and I will mention
you next month.
On a sad note the Motor Corps offers it
sincere condolences to the families of Noble
Don Smith and Noble Pat Gilkey, who have
lost a loved one over the last month. Also
remember the Family of Noble Ken Brandon
in your prayers as his wife Debbie, is having
a serious heath issue.
A little birdie told me that Noble Jack
Wilson is hanging up his pen at the Kosair
Kolums, and retiring. Well as for me Jack, I
would like to thank you for doing a fine job all
these years. I am sure that you will be hard
to replace. Thanks Jack.
For your information: Noble Patrick
Gilkey has been assigned the office of official
photographer for the Kosair Motor Corps.
Thanks Pat. Noble Spark Wiggington won
the half and half this month. And finally a
little history:
In the 1400’s a law was set forth in England that a man was allowed to hit his
wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb.
Hence we have ‘the rule of thumb’ and
many years ago in Scotland, a new game was
invented. It was ruled ‘Gentlemen Only...
Ladies Forbidden’...and thus the word GOLF
entered into the English language.
Until next time, The Buggester

Elected Officers
Conducting the
Business of Units
and Clubs
A question has been asked regarding
when newly elected Kosair unit and club
officers may begin conducting the official
business of their respective unit or club.
They must be officially installed into office
prior to conducting business. How do they become
officially installed? In recent years, there have been some
misunderstandings which need to be clarified.
The Imperial Shrine bylaws state all units and clubs are
the responsibility of the Potentate for the year in which he
and the officers of his units and clubs serve. The Potentate
or his designee is the only person who may install the
officers of a unit or club. Officers who conduct business
without being officially installed do so at their risk as they
do not have legitimate authority to act.
It is a simple matter to make arrangements with the
Potentate-elect to have an official installation take place.
Nobles are directed to follow proper procedure and protocol
for 2010.
Oriental Guide Turns 65! Oriental Guide Bob Maxwell has turned sixtyfive years of experience and wisdom. He recently retired from CSX after
thirty-one years of service. A large crowd of friends and family joined in
the celebration on June 17th at Kosair Shriners.
SEPTEMBER, 2009
It is my order that no officers for any unit or club
of Kosair Shriners be installed during my term for
the 2010 year except by the 2010 Potentate-elect or
his designee.

Greeters, we have lost a long, loyal,
and dedicated member with the
passing of Herb Chapman on July 23,
2009. Herb joined the Greeter Unit in
January of 1976 and faithfully served
the Greeter Unit for 33 years. Recently,
Herb’s participation in the Greeter
Unit was limited as he took care of Lady
Louise with health problems. Herb
served as the Greeter Unit Director
in 1981, 1985-1987 and 1992-2007.
Herb could always be counted on when
something had to be done and was very
popular with all Greeters. The Greeter
Unit extends to Lady Louise and all
members of Herb’s family our sincere
sympathies.

Oriental Band
By Chuck Strothman
Hello, Bandsmen! Thanks to all that
went to Madison, Ind. for the Regatta
parade. We had a great time and had
a nice meal afterwards at the Pines
Restaurant.
Thanks to the Oriental
Band Ladies for their contribution to
the recent Christmas in July put on by
the Boat Club. Don’t forget that our
Ladies are still serving refreshments
on the 2nd Friday of each month at the
regular Friday Night Dinners. Which
leads me right in to Friday, October 30,
which is a Theme Night for the Shrine.
The Oriental Band will be hosting the
Halloween festivities again. There will be
a silent auction, door prizes, and prizes
for the best costumes. All this takes place
after the dinner.
Bandsmen, come on out and join us for
this and have some fine fellowship with
the Nobles and Ladies.
Let us not forget that the SASA
Convention in Virginia Beach is quickly
approaching, Sept. 16-20, and we still
need to practice for the competition. I
hope everyone has their reservations
made.
Welcome to all of the Nobles created
during the Unity Class on July 18. I hope
that will take the time to get to know
the Temple well as you prepare to join
a Unit or Club. Please come and visit
the Oriental Band on Monday nights at
8 PM. Hope to see y’all soon.

The 2009/10 Kosair Shrine Bowling
League Season begins on Wednesday,
September 2, 2009 at 7:30 PM. At press
time we have 9 teams ready to bowl and
are actively seeking 4 additional bowlers
to form another team to complete the 10

President John Reker, Sr. and I
attended the Strike and Spare Bowling
League meeting on Monday, July 27 for
all leagues bowling this winter. At the
meeting the 2009 rules was reviewed
and new information on this upcoming
season.
Representatives from the USBC

requirements for the bowling league
to follow for the upcoming 2009/2010

I would be remiss if I did not thank Ray
Jarred for all his help and suggestions
as I assume the secretarial duties of
the Kosair Shrine Bowling League. Ray
served the bowling league as secretary
for many years.

Greetings from the
Roustabouts!
By Luke Martin
The Roustabouts have had some good fellowship while
working the roadblocks, and I would like to personally thank
those who came out in the mid-90 degree weather, so someone
else could have a chance for a better life.
But please! Beware of the Tiger, it is like anything else in
life. If you turn your back on it, you might lose ground or
fall behind. The same goes with the fundraising we do for the
children that need our help... If we just sit back and think that
someone else will do it, then we have already fallen behind.
So please, take time to do your part and help. It just takes a
little from all of us to make a difference for the children that
depend on us.
The Roustabouts welcome all Nobles to attend our next
meeting on September 24, 2009 at 6:30 P.M. at the Kosair
Temple.

Transportation Unit
By Roger Hines
The Kosair Transportation Unit lost three of its founding members to the
Black Camel since the June issue of KOLUMS. We lost Nobles Charlie Casey,
Dan Cook and Herb Chapmen. Charlie and Dan had been residents
of Masonic Home for some time while Herb was able to remain active
until his last visit to the hospital. All three were very active Masons.
Charlie and Dan were 33rd degree Scottish Rite. Herb was Emeritus
Director of the Kosair Greeters. These three fine Nobles will be
missed by their families, Kosair Shrine and Kosair Charities.
A little history about the Kosair
Transportation Unit
The unit was created in 1988 by then Potentate C. Brown Allen. He
who saw a need to help some children get treatment at the Lexington
and Cincinnati Shrine Hospitals as well as Kosair Children’s Hospital.
Noble Gus Roederer was the first Director, a position he held until
1995. All members were Past Masters when the unit formed. In year
1996 Sherman Harris was appointed Director and he served until
2002. Roger Hines then served as Director from 2003 until 2007. In
2008 Stan Bain became Director.
The Unit Director is the liaison between the patient and the
Transportation Unit. He schedules all trips. He assigns memberdrivers for all trips. He is responsible for the vans. He also sees that
the drivers are reimbursed for their out of pocket expenses. With our
past and present trip load this can.
From 5/20 thru 7/14/2009 we made 19 trips and drove 5610 miles.
This is slightly down from past months but as happens every fall it
will increase. It is a fine group of Nobles aided by their ladies

Gold Fidelity Chapter
DeMolay
By B. Shawn Warren, Chapter Advisor
At its first stated meeting in July, Gold Fidelity Chapter,
Order of DeMolay, hosted a dinner, awards ceremony and
installation of officers. Members, Advisors, family and guests
began the evening with a fish dinner in the Kosair dining room.
Some of the fish served was caught by chapter members on a
recent fishing trip.
Following dinner, Dad Danny Coffey, Executive Officer in
KY assisted Dad Warren with Merit Bar Award presentations
to four members. Bro. Matthew Fouts was presented his
membership patent. After the awards ceremony the members
retired to the chapter room to elect officers for the new term.
The following members were elected or appointed to serve the
chapter: Bryce Adler, Master Councilor; Braxton McCrady,
Senior Councilor; Justin Nichols, Junior Councilor; Tim
Wemes, Senior Deacon; Jon Klapheke, Junior Deacon; Matthew
Fouts, Senior Steward. Our guests then enjoyed an excellent
open installation of officers.
The Annual Conclave of Kentucky DeMolay was opened on
Thursday, July 16th in Williamsburg, KY. The four-day event
featured an afternoon at Kentucky Splash Water Park, a Quiz
Bowl, Sports and ritual competitions, the annual meeting of
the DeMolay Sorority, Congress Session, Grand Banquet and
installation of state officers for the ensuing year. Gold Fidelity
Chapter, was well represented during the session. Our own
Bryce Adler was appointed State Junior Deacon and Braxton
McCrady was appointed State Junior Steward.
We welcome guests and prospective members at our meetings
held on the first and third Tuesday. The Chapter meets in the

opportunities for young men to develop leadership skills, make
new friends and have fun in a safe environment. If you have
a son, grandson, nephew or neighbor aged 12-21 that would
be interested in the Order of DeMolay, please contact Shawn
Warren at 502-995-8293.
The Cripple’s Dream
By W.S. Brown, 1924
I ‘woke up the other night
And there in front of my dim light
I saw God, taking a little peep
At my crooked legs and I couldn’t sleep.
So, I pulled the clothes up over my head,
And asked God to take me when I was dead.
Still I wondered what He would do with me
For I am a cripple, as you can see.
Then I went to sleep, praying to Him.
And I dreamed I saw a Shriner come in.
He picked me up and took me away,
Saying he’d fix my legs so I could run and play.
Then I slept on until morning came,
And I looked at my legs which were just the same,
And I thought of what said to men –
Tell little children to come to him.
Just then my crippled pal crawled in
And gently chucked me under the chin.
And yelled out loud without any fear,
The Shriner men are coming here.
Then I ‘woke up and looked out to see,
And there were the Shriners coming for me.
So, thank you, God, for my dream coming true,
And thank you, every Shriner, too.

Fantastic “Down Mexico Way!”
By Potentate Randy Coe
Kosair Nobles and ladies attended the 2009 Imperial Council
Parade in San Antonio, Texas. Our Kosair “lighted fez” was
a big hit. The Imperial Officers were very pleased that Kosair
Shriners participated. Shown in the photograph above are Divan
members, the Most Worshipful Grand Master, the chairman of
the SHC-Lexington Unit and Kosair nobles.
Noble Sam Swope provided a deluxe van to transport the fez
in the parade. Nobles Alan Miller, Mike Holt, Jim Hatfield, Vene
Weissert, Bob Dadisman and Tom Cissell were our transportation
team for the fez and the Directors Staff Jeep and trailer. Vene
was able to be in his first Imperial Parade. He has taken care of
the fez since the 1970s.
Judy Dabney, Clara Juergens and Clara Wilder were some of the Kosair ladies watching the parade.

YOU MIGHT BE A KOSAIR FUNSTER
Did you ever see a silly stunt and think it was hilarious?
Did you ever laugh until tears came to your eyes and you hurt from the exertion?
Did you ever want to run away to the circus?
Do you love the smell of greasepaint?
Do you sometime think sawdust is in your veins?
Did you ever wonder what it would be like to be in a great parade?
Do you ever feel the need for anonymity just for the sake of having a good time?
Are you an outgoing person, the life of the party?
Are you a retiring person prone to hang back in the crowd while all the while
wanting to be in the forefront of the action?
Do you like Magic?
Do you love children (of all ages?)
Are you sentimental?
Are you caring?
Did your heart ever break when coming into contact with an unfortunate child
and wish you could help in some way?
Would you like make someone’s day brighter?
Would you like to make a child laugh? THEN YOU SHOULD BE A KOSAIR

Aahmed Grotto
By Jim Doss
The Mystic Order of Veiled Prophets
of the Enchanted Realm welcomes Paul
Marro into Aahmed Grotto. Paul was
initiated July 8th. He will be a good
addition and hard working prophet. He
was raised in Robinson Lodge July 2nd
and already has many friends in the
Grotto.
The mini-car unit continues to be very
active. The unit has participated in many
parades this year. They are a crowd
pleaser and are cheered and applauded
in every community.
Mark your calendar for October 24th.
Aahmed Grotto is having a fabulous pork
chop dinner as a fundraiser. A corn-hole
tournament and other activities are
being planned. Good food and a fun time
should be had by all who attend.
IF YOU CHANGE THE WAY YOU
LOOK AT THINGS, THE THINGS YOU
LOOK AT WILL CHANGE !

Kosair Arab Patrol
By Marvin Foster
First and foremost, I regret to inform you that the Patrol Unit along
with the rest of the Nobles of Kosair Shrine lost a dear and devoted
brother, Noble Dan Cook on Saturday July 18th. Cookie had been in
the Masonic Home for quite a while. We send our condolences to his
dear wife Mary, and to the rest of his family. We will miss him because
he was a faithful member of our Unit and everything in which he was
involved in.
We are planning to go to Jacksonville, Florida on August 13th for the
South Eastern Shrine Convention. The Patrol will have our regular
business meeting. When our president, Noble Junior Daugherty will
be finished as president. We have enjoyed Junior and had a pretty
good year.
Members of the Wounded Warrior Transition Unit are hosted at
Kosair Shrine.
Kosair Legion of Honor
By: John Phillips, Adjutant
As the “Dog Days of Summer” draw to an end and the kids are back
in school, The Kosair Shrine Legion of Honor keeps at a quick pace
with hopes for our philanthropy to brighten the lives of children that
Kosair Charities and Shriners of North America care for.
The Kosair Legion of Honor possesses a void by the passing of
our Past Commander, former writer for Kosair Kolums and friend,
Noble Jim Heine. We know that heaven has a former Marine First
Sergeant within its ranks and will keep everyone in line. Also, the
Legion of Honor welcomes its newest members to the unit: Nobles
Younger, Mercer and Morgan. We would like to invite any noble who
is a retired or former member of our Armed Forces, please consider
joining the Legion of Honor. If not our unit, please be involved by
joining one of Kosair’s many units.
The SESA Convention in Jacksonville, Florida has come to a close
and with it, we would extend our congratulations to the newest Past
SESA Legion of Honor Commander, Noble Bob Tally and his Lady,
Charlene for their hard work and diligence to ensure this 2009 SESA
LOH Convention was second to none.
The 2009 Pilgrimage to our nation’s capitol, Washington, D.C. for
the Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is
quickly coming upon us. For more information, contact the Adjutant
or Commander for more details.
On Monday, September 7th is Labor Day. This day was set out over
100 years ago by the labor movement and is a day of celebration to
the economic achievements of American Workers around the country.
This day is a national tribute to the contributions American workers
have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
It’s an honor to belong to the Legion of Honor!
It won’t be long before the football season will be here. We plan to
do our usual parking for the Manual Stadium game again this year.
We encourage all Patrol members to participate as possible. We will
need your help, and we will enjoy the fellowship together.
Until next month, I’ll leave you with Marvin’s thought for the month.
“Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagination what you
desire, you will what you image and at last you create what you will.”
(George Bernard Shaw). Yours in the Faith – Marvin Foster, Secretary

Ben a real busy summer fer us cuzzins and gals. Wuz in the
Portland and Pekin parades. The crowds were lively and we had a
fun time. A bunch of us drove a fer piece up to the Imperial Hillbilly
Cornvention in Perrysville, Oh. Thar wuz hillbillies from all over
the country and Canada too. The parade and initiations were great.
Everybody wuz so friendly couldn't help but have a good time. We
had a couple of vendor tables and raised sum money fer the kids at
Kosair Children’s Hospital.
A hardy welecome to Jim Carter our newest cuzzin. Jim was
initiated at our July 26th meetin, and is a brother from Buechel
Lodge. Sept. 19th we are having a fundraiser with food and activities
at the Grotto on Manslick during the Fairdale Festival. All nobles
and their families are invited.
October 16th may be the biggest day of year fer us Derby City
Hillbillies! We is havin Hillbilly Night at Kosair Shrine. Country
vittles will start the evening, followed by good fun entertainment
and a live auction. Most important we'll be putting on the Hillbilly
Degree for any flatlander noble and the gals degree for their lady.
Cuzzins and gals we need a lot of help to make Hillbilly Night a great
success so please attend our Sept. 25th meetin.
Love, life and laughter are great things, but only if kept
in due bounds.
The Pegasus Parade in May was a great time for Sand Bug members, their ladies and members of the Kosair elected Divan.
Everybody along the parade route enjoyed the “Bugs”. Some of them were perhaps enticed to become Shriners.

On Saturday morning, July 4th,
members of the Mark Twain Shrine
Club and Mini Wheels assembled in the
parking lot of the old Fruit of the Loom
plant in Campbellsville, KY. Following
breakfast and fellowship, the Nobles
lined up for the Campbellsville Fourth
of July parade. There were mini cars,
motorcycles, tractor trailers and a golf
cart that followed the Kosair Scimitar
and Crescent along the parade route.
The weather was perfect and the Mini
Wheels brought smiles to the faces of
young and old alike. After the parade
the club members returned to the plant
for fellowship and photos.
Mark Twain Shrine Club has enjoyed
an outstanding year under the leadership

CEREBRAL PALSY K.I.D.S. CENTER
BECOMES
KIDS CENTER
FOR
In celebrating its 50th Anniversary, the
Cerebral Palsy Kids Center changed
its name. Now called the Kids Center
for Pediatric Therapies, its name
better embodies the mission of the
organization.
“We didn’t want to be limited to only
caring for Cerebral Palsy patients
when, in fact, we do so much more,”
said Jim Littlefield-Dalmares, director
of marketing and development. “The
new name better describes the agency
and the services provided.”
Services like physical, occupational
and speech therapy help children with
a variety of disabilities such as autism,
Down syndrome or basic speech and
language disorders. However, the
caring staff at Kids Center, doesn’t see a
child’s limits as a disability. They prefer
to embrace their mission – “We see the
ability in disability.”
To exemplify its mission, the
organization unveiled the Ability Wall
in March.
While the primary focus of the Ability
Wall was to provide information
to clients and guests about the
organization and upcoming events, the
opportunity for the children to become
engaged and motivated by it has been
much more substantial. “The Ability
Wall helps us celebrate the small stuff,”
said Littlefield-Dalmares.

the organization is collecting them
with hopes of publishing a book in the
future. The hope is that
parents and caregivers
will see the small
accomplishments and not
focus on the limits and
what their children can’t
achieve, but instead what
they can.
Former patients also are
encouraged to celebrate
their
accomplishments
over the years by visiting
the Kids Center offices
and post their abilities on
the new Ability Wall.
The Kids Center is the
recipient of a $320,000
grant from Kosair Charities
to expand its indigent care
services, absorb increased
demand, expand facility
staff and continue facility
housekeeping
service.
Beginning in 2010, Kids
Center will receive an
additional four-year, $2
million leadership grant to
support the organization’s
endowment campaign.
Little things like six-year-old Wesley’s
recent accomplishment, “I can “Kosair Charities empowers

Kosair Sunshriners
By Bill Lewellen
Noble Walt Oster has been very active, he called me on June 14th. Flag Day at
the Masonic Home with a large Parade. Our mission was to gather as many Masons
together. And present all with a American Flag. Also one of the World War II
Veterans with a Plaque which he had coming to him. Also had a Chief Glen Powell
and a member of DAV #454 Chet Neddy. Each of us there gave a brief account of
our respective military service.
On June 20th we had an all day picnic at the Masonic Homes of Ky. Another
scheduled for August 1st. with booths and yard sales, we are looking for a big day.
Sick, deceased and condolences - I tried getting in contact with Chester McCool,
he was at home last I heard and requested, to keep him in our Prayers; .Gil Smith
said he is doing real good but not driving at nights.
