Dear Parent,
We were delighted to receive today the school’s value added information for GCSE
in 2009-10. The CEM Centre at Durham University has placed Prior’s Field in the
top 0.8% of all UK schools (state and independent) and we are ranked in fifth place
overall. This is a wonderful reflection of the excellent teaching, wider school ethos,
varied activities and the girls’ determination to work hard to do their best.
After half-term you will notice changes to the flower beds on the main drive, thanks to Cathy Goode, Gill Wilks, June
Cunningham and Kim Budge who volunteered their time this week, for planting. We are very grateful for their help
and look forward to some winter colour in the months ahead. The PSA is also underway with plans for the annual
Christmas Fair and I would like to add my voice to Laura Collyear’s, in saying that the Gift Wrap scheme really is an
excellent way of raising funds for the school. A brochure was sent out a few weeks ago explaining that for every item
purchased, we receive 22% cash back.
Finally, I hope that the girls and staff involved in the sports tour to Malta and the D of E expedition to Snowdonia
have successful trips, and that everyone has a relaxing half-term break.

Green Club: Maddy Martin Binks, Victoria Moore and Season Tse report:
This week the Catering Team and Grrreen Club have been asking the whole school community to scrape their plates
and sort their waste: cups, food and liquids. As well as this being a good opportunity to recycle, we waste, the aim
was to raise awareness of how much we waste, the long term consequences of this and what we can do to reduce it.
On the first lunchtime the amount of waste collected was the equivalent of over 100 meals! This dropped
considerably by the end of the week.
All of the waste was displayed in assembly this morning and we explained why we should care. For example, why
does it matter whether we eat an apple or put it in the bin? Think then of the water used to water the apple trees,
the labour gone into picking them, the money gone into ensuring they are up to health standards, the fuel gone in
to transporting them, and the energy gone into keeping them cool and fresh in the fridge. Throwing food away has
higher implications than we think.
In the UK, the most common disposal method is putting waste into landfill sides. On average, 111 million tonnes of
waste are disposed into landfill sites in the UK each year. There are over 4000 landfill sites in the UK and 1.5 million
tonnes of Methane (a strong greenhouse gas) are released by these.
As a school we need to take action. We are asking that everyone only takes food that they will definitely eat and to
go back for seconds if necessary. Love Food, Hate Waste!

Congratulations to Lucy who wrote a creative piece for the Summertime Stories Competition for Young Writers.
Lucy has received an award certifying that she has written a creative piece of distinction that has been selected
for publication in a Young Writers' Anthology for 2010.
Well done Lucy!

School Book Fair: Mrs Hilliam reports:
Last week the school library was transformed into a mini bookshop
when we held our seventh school book fair. Thanks to the generosity
of our parents the girls spent an incredible £1000.93 on new books
which generated commission of £600.56 (60% is the highest possible
commission level) to spend on new high quality fiction for the school
library.
At the end of the fair the girls chose a selection of books for the library
and they have been very busy stamping and covering books to enable
them to be ready for lending as soon as possible. The enthusiasm shown
by our girls for choosing and reading their new books was delightful!
The library is now a very busy part of the school and the girls are
borrowing thousands of books each year. I would be very grateful if you
could remind your daughters to return their books promptly once they
have finished reading them. Thank you very much!

Drama Delight: Mrs Horton reports:
It was fantastic to have another opportunity to showcase the talents of the cast of Much Ado About Nothing in
a lower school assembly on Wednesday. We are very proud of everything they have achieved, both individually
and as part of an ensemble, and it was a lovely way to start the last Wednesday of this busy half term.
Congratulations all round and a quick reminder to return all hoodies to the Drama Department unless you wish
to purchase them at the reasonable price of £7.50. Well done again and have a restful holiday!

The English Department presents….SPAGFEST: Mrs Berry reports:
To target SPELLING, PUNCTUATION and GRAMMAR in the lower school, in an exciting and entertaining
way, the English Department would like to introduce “SPAGFEST”. Merrier than any music festival, more
enlightening than any literary festival and far more fantastic than any food festival, “SPAGFEST” takes
place twice a term for each year group! The fun begins with an interactive study session focusing on three
elements of spelling, punctuation and grammar, perhaps a common homophone, a group of spellings or
parts of speech. For the next six weeks the girls are challenged to learn and practise their three targets in
class before we come together again for the “SPAGFEST” House quiz! This half term Frank took first place in
the First Form, while Pankhurst secured victory in both Second Form and Third Form. Congratulations to all
the winning teams!
The fruits of National Poetry Day:
On October 8, Prior’s Field School celebrated National Poetry Day in style. The staff contributed to a video
which shows the range of poetry’s influence and there were a number of other events running including
a competition to become part of a whole school poem. The theme for National Poetry Day was “Home”.
As Prior’s Field, is for all of us, a kind of home, the English department invited students to write a rhyming
couplet in meter about their “home”. The best couplets made it into the final version of the poem printed
below.

The Teatime Concert: Clare Aldrich reports:
On Monday, the music department held its first Teatime Concert of the school year. The event is an
opportunity for girls to perform pieces to an audience of parents, teachers and students. The informal concert
offered a great afternoon’s entertainment, with twenty five performers playing a variety of styles of music
such as pop, classical and jazz with a wide range of instruments. We also had some group performances,
such as the newly established Cello Group, upcoming bands and an a cappella trio of singers. It was lovely to
see so many new girls performing, as well as the growing confidence in those who are already old-timers on
these occasions. They were all praised and applauded by a very supportive audience. We had girls performing
throughout the afternoon of all abilities and the event was concluded by Ellen Bryden in the Fourth Form,
who performed a beautiful Grade 7 violin piece.
A big thank you to Mr Pratt, who not only hosted the event but also accompanied many of the items. Overall it
was a great success and all the performers should be extremely proud of themselves. The feedback from the
audience was tremendously positive and everyone is looking forward to the next Teatime Concert. Mr Pratt
assures us that, next time, biscuits will be provided to complement the tea!

Poverty Lunch: Mrs Saunders reports:
Poverty lunch last week raised £295 for charity. School Council met
today and have chosen to send money to support the following:
clean water for a Bangladesh school
an African Farmyard
Magic Beans
this will be done through the Good Gifts scheme to help fight
poverty in Africa.

Junior Boarding: Mrs Roberts-Barter reports:
Last weekend the boarders enjoyed a trip to the cinema in Guildford on Saturday and, on Sunday, in chilly
but bright weather a visit to the London Film Museum. Though small, the museum plays host to a variety
of movie memorabilia including parts of the sets from films such as Star Wars and Alien and part of the
underground train set from EastEnders. Following this the girls enjoyed wandering along the South Bank by
the River Thames, taking in atmosphere and enjoying some of the street performances as well as popping into
the Royal Festival Hall to see the foyer entertainment.
The full boarders will be going ‘donutting’ on Sunday 14 November as their weekend outing – this will require
helmets which are not supplied by the centre, so if you have any helmets at home I would be really grateful if
you could bring them in after half-term. Please could you also encourage your daughter to bring something
‘halloweeny’ to dress in after the break as there will be some Halloween celebrations!

Sixth form: Mrs Picken reports:
Last weekend the full boarders decided to cook their own snacks to share over their weekly fix of X Factor.
They enjoyed mini yorkshire puddings and roast beef and divine profiteroles cooked by Cheyenne and
Tabitha.
On Thursday the lower sixth hosted a ‘Pub Quiz’ for a huge number of the 5th form. The evening was full of
music and facts, becoming very competetive, especially against the staff table. The girls enjoyed a take away
supper and it was a chance for all to relax together before we break for half term. Many thanks to everyone
who worked to make it happen and the lower sixth for being such charming hosts. We were sad not to be
able to include the upper sixth but they are already planning what is to be a very competetive lower vs upper
sixth quiz in the Spring Term!

Sports: Miss Gordon reports:
On Saturday the U12 C and U13 C hockey teams both drew 1-1 in their matches against St Mary’s Ascot. Players
of the match were Hattie Lunt and Lara Martin for the U12s and Jemima Beard and Chloe Moffat for the U13s.
The U14B hockey team were also in action and were 1-0 winners. Sabine Friedrich was the goal scorer and
player of the match.
The Junior hockey teams played matches against Edgeborough on Wednesday afternoon. The U13As lost 3-1
but played well. Player of the match was Felicity Bull. The U13Bs won 4-3 and the player of the match was Emelia
Moxey. Finally the U12As lost to a very strong Edgeborough side and player of the match was outstanding
goalkeeper, Holly Denham.
The 1st XI were in action on Wednesday against Farnborough Hill. The team played exceptionally well with their
best performance so far this term. The end result was a 2-0 victory with goals from Annabel Walker and Hannah
Larwood. Player of the match was Rachel Pepper.
U14 Hockey team played Epsom College on Thursday. They put in an excellent team performance and
dominated the opposition, eventually winning 5-1. Player of the match was Charlotte Hardy.
The 1st XI had a second match this week also against Epsom College. It was a difficult match and the overall
result was 0-0. Player of the match was awarded to Celia Hall and Oz!
The senior hockey group would like to say a huge thank you to Oz (Sarala Baskaran in 5th Form) for her
performances in the U16 and 1st XI. We will certainly miss her in the teams! Good luck, Oz!
Reminders:
There will be training for the U14 and 15 hockey teams on Monday 8th November, as well as senior netball
training.
All girls MUST have a mouth guard and shin pads for their hockey lessons, practices and matches.
There are over 60 named items in lost property. Students must come and collect these before cautions are
given out.
Sports Lockers:
There will be a locker check on Friday 12th November so all girls MUST have a lock by then.

Dear Parent,
I am writing to you to tell you about an amazing trip that the Science Department is organising to The
Museum of Flight in Seattle, USA. The idea for the trip came about after Dr Bonnie Dunbar the former
NASA astronaut and president of the Museum visited Prior’s Field in March 2008. Many of the girls will
remember her inspirational assembly and talk on space exploration and her invitation for us to visit her
museum. Dr Dunbar will be meeting us and showing us around the museum, which is one of the leading
air and space museums in the world. If you would like more information about the museum please visit
their website ‘www.museumofflight.org’.
The trip will take place in the first week of the summer holidays and we will fly out the day after speech
day on 10thJuly 2011 and return by the end of the week. We will spend a couple of days looking around
the museum displays, trying out the flight and spacecraft simulators and even going on board the
President Kennedy’s Air Force 1 plane! There will also be plenty of opportunity to do some sightseeing
and shopping in downtown Seattle and visit landmarks such as the Space Needle and Smith Tower,
made famous in the film ‘Sleepless in Seattle’. The dates and provisional itinerary for the trip are as
follows;
Day 1 - Travel & check in to hotel accommodation
Day 2 - Day at Museum of Flight
Day 3 - Day at Museum of Flight
Day 4 - Tour of Seattle and sightseeing
Day 5 – am cultural activity in Seattle, pm -shopping
Day 6 - Return travel
Estimated costs are Flight - £800 , Hotel - £200, Extras (meals, spending etc) - £250. Approximate
provisional total £1200-£1500. All girls from the 3rd Form to 6th Form are invited and if you would like
your daughter to go on this trip, I need you to let me know by returning the attached sheet or by emailing me directly on gjones@priorsfieldschool.com.
