Cyprian Year of Faith. The coming season of Christ’s ‘advent’ (coming) is an added incentive to highlight the importance of the Year of Faith. In Pope Benedict’s apostolic letter, Porta Fidei, there is a powerful expression that says, “Keep our gaze fixed on Jesus”. Christmas fixes the gaze of the entire world on Jesus and his birth. But not all make Him the center of their faith and their lives. Our challenge is to see Christmas as a renewed call to stay connected with Him as branches to the vine by personal prayer, to drink the ‘living water’ by regular celebration of sacraments, and ‘eat the flesh of the son of man and drink his blood”. These are the sources of ‘grace’ and without grace our faith is doomed to fall by the wayside. The Pope proposed a practical way of upholding our faith. He quotes St. Augustine who urged the Catechumens saying, “You have received it (the Creed) and recited it, but in your minds and hearts you must keep it ever present.” What he meant and what the Pope means is that we memorize the Creed, the Nicene or the Apostles Creed. See alongside our prayer for December. Faith Education. On 9th of December Irene Benavidez will break the Word for us at all Masses. In response to our Archbishop’s call to “embrace this Year of Faith as a time of interior renewal and spiritual preparation for a new Christian witness” Irene will invite us to continual conversion to Jesus and greater solidarity with His Church. She belongs to ‘El Sembrador” the Sower, a group evangelizing through radio, television and preaching all over the country. RCIA. At the 5.30PM and 12.00 noon Masses on Dec. 2nd we will hold the Rite of Acceptance to those who are pursuing their faith-journey into the Catholic community; 22 English speaking and 15 Spanish speaking. This return to sacraments can certainly be considered as an answer to the call to Evangelization which we hear in this Year of Faith. Christmas Preparation. Once again it is time for celebrating Jesus’ presence in our midst as individuals, families and parish community. Christmas celebrations, no matter how or where, will still look incomplete without the Christmas mass, the singing of the carols, veneration of the manger scene and the unique atmosphere the Church provides to create the awareness of “God among us’. The most joyous season of the year will also challenge us for greater generosity and giving in the form of participation, ministry as well as reaching out to the poor and hungry among us. “When I was hungry…… “ To help one another to get into the spirit of Christmas we will once again have our Christmas Concert on Dec. 16th soon after the evening Mass. Several of our choirs and solo singers will take part with songs, music and narrative of the birth of Jesus. Do make a loving commitment to your faith family to share the holy season with one another. To help you plan your Christmas celebration next weekend you will receive the schedule of Masses and confessions along with the Christmas letter. Already now I want you to take note of the extraordinary situation Christmas creates this year for confessions. Besides the Penitential Service on Friday 21st there will be no other time for private confessions; except for a couple of hours in the morning of 24h. Would love to hear from you. (ccarlo@sacredheartventura.org) Prayer for December. A Prayer For Advent. Look on us Jesus and let all the darkness of our souls disappear before the beams of your brightness. Fill us with your holy love and open to us the treasures of your wisdom. You know all our desires, so bring to perfection what you have started and what the Holy Spirit has wakened us to ask in prayer. We seek your face, turn your face to us and show us the glory. Then our longing will be satisfied and our peace will be perfect. Amen. (St. Augustine of Hippo) HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION Saturday, December 8th is a Holy Day of Obligation, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Masses will be celebrated on Friday at 5:30 p.m. & 7 p.m. and on Saturday 8:30 a.m., 5:30 p.m. & 7 p.m. ADVENT PENANCE SERVICE Sacred Heart will have a service of reconciliation on Friday, December 21st at 7 p.m. There will be several visiting priests assisting with confessions. December 2, 2012 Page 3 Youth Ministry News From Fr. Bill Welcome to Sunday Scripture Cycle C and the Gospel according to Luke. Luke’s Gospel has a slightly different perspective as Luke is the ONLY non-Jewish whose writings made it into the Bible. By his writings, we can tell that Luke is well educated, that his mother tongue is Greek, that he knows the Old Testament well but is not familiar with where places are located in the Holy Land, that he probably knew St. Paul, and some suggest that he also may have known our Blessed Mother as his infancy narrative is told from her perspective. Luke wrote his Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles as a two book work using a travel format (sometimes geographically inaccurate) to organize his material. In the gospel he begins and ends in Jerusalem. In the Acts he begins in Jerusalem and ends in Rome. His Gospel includes the entire Gospel according to Mark, with some things that would only be significant for one with a Jewish background being recast. (“Son of David,” Messiah,” avoided; “Son of God,” “Savior of the World,” and “Lord” being used.) Luke does have other sources of material including some which is called the “Q Source.” These are stories found in both Matthew and Luke but not in Mark. No “hard copy” of this “Q Source” has been found but the consistency between these two gospels of the material written more than 50 years after the crucifixion suggest its existence. (Evidence suggests that Matthew was written in the 80’s and that Luke may have been written in the 80’s and perhaps as late as the early 90’s). In addition to Luke’s stressing that Jesus is Savior for all people, Jesus’ concern for the poor and for women is emphasized. Jesus is characterized by meekness and humility with a strong focus on his spirit of mercy. I love Luke’s version of the Beatitudes which is much more challenging that Matthew’s version: “Blest are who hunger and thirst” vs. “Blest are those who hunger and thirst for justice.” Also, Luke’s woes are less focused on the scribes and Pharisees but rather on those who have means, wealth and power: “Woe to you who are rich, for you have had your consolation. Woe to you who have had your fill, for you will be hungry.” I look forward to the Prodigal Son, the Good Samaritan, the Disciples on the Road to Emmaus… as Luke writings are rich in detail, style and meaning. We are all in for a treat as this year we break open the Gospel according to Luke. ♦ Our next Confirmation 1 classes are on Monday, December 3rd and Tuesday, December 4th. ♦ Sunday, December 2nd is a Lifenite. The theme is “Are you ready for the end of the world?” We gather for the 5:30pm Sunday Mass followed by dinner, faith development and fellowship. The evening concludes at 8:45pm. Although all high school aged teens are welcome, this is a Confirmation 2 requirement. ♦ Friday, December 7th at 7pm we will be having a special youth mass in honor of The Feast of the Immaculate Conception. All are welcome as this is a Holy Day of Obligation. The Youth Choir will be there as we celebrate the Patroness of the United States.
