DOG THERAPY THE BEST KIND OF
MEDICINE
It’s the kind of standing appointment patients look forward to. Every Tuesday, two friendly furry friends visit Ohio Valley
General Hospital’s Willow Brook facility. Gracie is 6, and her daughter, Holly, 3. The golden retriever dynamic duo are therapy
dogs cared for by a hospital volunteer, Ray Koper and his wife, Shirley.
Gracie and Holly are part of Therapy Dog, International. It’s a volunteer organization that registers dogs for the purpose of
visiting nursing homes and hospitals. To join the organization, all dogs must be tested by a certified evaluator. They have to be
at least one year old, and be able to pass a yearly physical and a temperament evaluation. This includes interacting with
people who use service equipment (a test not all dogs can pass!).
As their handler, Shirley also had to pass a test to ensure she can maintain control over them in any situation. She’s been
bringing them to the hospital for the last year; about the same amount of time Gracie has been a therapy dog. Holly has been
doing it for two years; getting involved because she was too big to be a show dog like her brother, Willy. Holly has since been
awarded a TDIA title (Therapy Dog International Active), as she has made well over 50 visits to hospitals. Ray Koper says
golden retrievers make great therapy dogs, because “they are gentle and loving; people love them.” He added that with their
positive temperament, you don’t have to worry about how they will interact with strangers.
Animal-assisted therapy is not a new concept. From visiting local hospitals to victims of violence, research has shown that a
dog’s optimism can go a long way. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, simply petting a dog can
decrease levels of stress hormones and lower blood pressure. Petting a dog also can also release oxytocin, a hormone that
increases the level of affection in both dogs and humans.
OVGH Willow Brook patients certainly enjoy seeing the girls every week. Patients in the Geropsychiatric Unit are provided with
short-term inpatient services for their mental health needs. But as Gracie and Holly prove, sometimes a paw-shake with a
friendly dog is the best kind of therapy!
President’s Report
It is hard to believe that as I write this report that we are facing Halloween in a couple of days. Before you know it,
Thanksgiving and Christmas will be here. The club and its members have been extremely busy since our last
newsletter.
On October 13th the club had its First Annual Fun Day at Settler’s Cabin Park. A great time was had by all, both
dogs and their human companions. Games were played, food was consumed and friendships were made or
rekindled. Pete and Kathy Stipanovich need to be commended driving to the event after a hard day of field training.
I also want to thank Marcy Kronz and Melissa Jarvis for their efforts in organizing the day. A number of new puppy
owners also attended. I hope that they will consider membership into the club.
At our October membership meeting, Dr. Zachary Goodrich presented information relating to surgical procedures
as they relate to Goldens. Dr. Goodrich is willing to return at a later date if there is enough interest from the club
members. We will continue to look for other topics that might be of interest to the membership. So if you if you
have an idea let me know and I will make the necessary contacts.
I want to congratulate all of you and your Goldens who have achieved new awards/titles over the past couple of
months. The list is too long to include here, so please refer to the brags section of the newsletter. Don’t forget to
submit your accomplishments to Sandy Wall by December 31st, so that your Golden can be recognized at our
banquet on March 2nd.
There are still a few slots available for the K9 First Aid Class on November 16 th. So please email me at
drosheka@comcast.net if you would like to attend. Also, don’t forget to RSVP your attendance at the Club’s annual
Christmas Party.
I know that we are rapidly facing the winter, but it is not too early to start to think about the Club’s spring activities.
We will be holding three major events this year. These are the Agility Trials chaired by Marcy Kronz, The Specialty
chaired by Tammy Tomlinson and the Hunt Test being led by Bob Tosadori. Each of these events are a huge
undertaking and will require your active participation to be a success. Just remember, this is your club and we need
your help to maintain the Club’s high level of excellence in the Golden Retriever Community both at the local and
national level.
Have a happy and safe holiday season and hope to see you at the upcoming events.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA),
which oversees animal imports into Canada, has
clarified its regulations regarding the importation of
“commercial” dogs, which includes dogs for shows
and exhibitions as well as breeding dogs.
FOR DOGS UNDER EIGHT MONTHS OF AGE
ENTERING CANADA FROM THE UNITED
STATES—Dog owners and exhibitors with dogs
under eight months of age are now required to
present proof of their entry in a dog show, trial, or
other competitive event when crossing the
American-Canadian border. This is in addition to the
already-existing requirements of:
A rabies certification (does not apply to animals
three months old or younger)
a veterinary certificate of health whether or not they
are ccompanied by their owner
a microchip
Individuals without proof of entry in a show, trial, or
other event are instead required to contact the CFIA
Animal Health Area Office for the province they
intend to enter at least 30 days before the dog is
imported to apply for the permit and allow sufficient
time for processing prior to entry into Canada.

personalized for each user

Relations Department at (919) 816-3720, or email

and make sure that you let Tammy know that you
are willing to help. I will be posting a list of
volunteers that will be needed for The Agility
Trials and the Spring Hunt Test in the next
newsletter. Remember, the club is only as good
as each of us make it!
