SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
The saints of Advent are filled with hope and promise. Isaiah proclaims his vision of the peaceable
kingdom. St. Nicholas, whose feast is Monday, brings unexpected treats. Our Lady of Guadalupe,
whom we celebrate next weekend, gives hope to the oppressed peoples of the Americas. And John
the Baptist proclaims a message that is at once challenge and hope. The hope offered by John is
born out of an expectation of conversion. Only when one repents will the hope be fulfilled, for the
kingdom of heaven is at hand.
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION, HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION
December 8, 2010
Each church year during the season of Advent, Catholics celebrate the solemnity of the Immaculate
Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a holy day of obligation. This Marian feast celebrates that
God, from the moments of Mary's conception, preserved Mary from original sin. It is Luke who
shows a special interest in Mary, and who helps us understand the important role that Mary has in
salvation history. As we prepare for the birth of Jesus and anticipate the return of Christ, our church
calendar calls us to celebrate the gift that God has bestowed upon us in the Immaculate Conception
of Mary. During Advent, we set aside some time to honor Mary, a mother filled with divine grace,
whose act of obedience to God brought about the birth of the Messiah.
Masses at St. Walter for the holy day will be Tuesday evening December 7 at 5 PM; and
Wednesday, December 8 at 6:30 AM, 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM.
SEDE VACANTE
This past Wednesday, Archbishop J. Peter Sartain was installed as the Archbishop of Seattle,
Washington. With his installation, the Diocese of Joliet is "sede vacante" -- the seat (cathedra of
the Bishop) being vacant. In the Eucharistic Prayer at Mass, the name of Benedict, our Pope is
mentioned but no mention of a Bishop -- only auxiliary Bishop Joseph (Siegel) and retired Bishop
Joseph (Imesch).
As our diocese awaits the announcement of a new Bishop, pray the following prayer each day as we
seek God's guidance upon his selection:
Lord God, you are Eternal Shepherd and guide. In your mercy grant the Diocese of Joliet a
Shepherd who will walk in your ways, and whose watchful care will bring us your blessing. In
your love for us, give us the joy of receiving a Shepherd who will be an example of goodness to
your people; and who will fill our hearts and minds with the truth of the Gospel. We ask this
through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,
One God forever and ever. Amen.

Today’s readings remind us that through Christ, God
fulfilled the promise he made to His people to bring them
salvation. This came about through Christ’s death and
Resurrection, opening the way to eternal life all who
believe, both Jew and Gentile. In gratitude for this great
gift, let us serve Christ with undivided hearts as His
stewards.

The last few ornament tags that remain on
our trees will hopefully be gone by the
time many of us see this update. Your
generosity and support will once again
bring smiles to many, many faces this
Christmas Season. Thank you.
Next Sunday, December 12th, is the LAST day to return
your gift to the church. Please don’t delay! Your gift is
intended for the individual noted on the ornament. It is
not possible to get gifts received after the deadline to that
person. Late gifts mean that someone will go unnoticed.
P lease be mindful of the person for whom you are
shopping.
As you bring your gift to church, please remember to
offer a special prayer for the recipient. God hears all of
our prayers—even those held in the quiet of our heart.

EVANGELIZATION THROUGH TV ADS
Catholics Come Home
December 5, 2010
Seasoned Adult Ministry
For anyone 55 year and over
Evangelization has always been the mission of the
Catholic Church. The call to evangelize first given to us
by Christ requires that we proclaim the word of God
using every means of communication. Radio, television,
and the internet have become indispensable tools for
brining the Gospel message to the modern world.
The next Hospitality Mass will be on Saturday,
December 11th. Come to 8:15 a.m. Mass and stay
afterward for ‘coffee and’ with friends, old and new.
In 2009, the Diocese of Joliet collaborated with the
Diocese of Rockford and Archdiocese of Chicago on an
evangelization initiative using television advertisements
on 10 networks in 3 languages for 5 ½ weeks. Catholics
who had drifted from the practice of the faith were invited
to rediscover their roots and to come home. Surveys of
parishes from across the three dioceses showed an
increase in Mass attendance, greater participation in the
Sacrament of Reconciliation, and a renewed sense of
Catholic identity among active parishioners and parish
staff.
*****
We have not scheduled any other activities in December
so that S.A.M. will not conflict with any Parish,
spiritual or social gatherings you may wish to attend
during the busy Advent and Christmas Seasons. Mark
your calendar now for January 28th – our next Social
Evening.
This year, new ads will be shown on TV from midDecember to mid-January. Once again, they will provide
the opportunity for faith conversations and moments of
evangelization in homes, schools, neighborhoods, and
places of business. To find out more about this
evangelization effort, to preview the new “Home” ad, and
to discover how you might participate, please go to the
diocesan website
www.CatholicsComeHomeJoliet.org.
Above all, please continue to pray that all baptized
Catholics will experience an ever deeper commitment to
Christ this Advent!

Guiding Hands Award
Nominations for St. Walter School’s 20102011 Guiding Hands Award are being accepted
through the close of school Friday, December
10. This annual School Board award
recognizes a person or married couple who has
demonstrated an ongoing commitment to the growth and
philosophy of St. Walter School. It is the highest honor
given by the school and will be presented at the school’s
Endowment Gala on Saturday, February 19, 2011.
Application forms are available in the school office.
St. Vincent DePaul Society
St. Walter’s St. Vincent DePaul Society has
completed it financial statements for the
fiscal year ended September 30, 2010.
The 18 active members of the Society provided almost
$43,000 in direct financial assistance to 248 people, and
an additional 96 people were provided emergency food
from the Parish food pantry. Less than 1% of our
expenses were for office supplies and regional/national/
international dues, allowing efficient and immediate aid
to those within our Parish boundaries facing extreme
hardships.
Our funds were provided directly from the Parish (42%)
and fundraising (12%), with the remaining 46% received
in the form of assistance matches from the operations of
the 6 SVdP resale stores operated throughout the Joliet
Diocese. These stores are in turn partially supplied
through the semi-annual clothing drives conducted at St.
Walter, as well as home pick-up of gently used furniture
and household goods. Our Parish family also donated
several vehicles this year, which are given to the working
poor in order for them to reach their jobs.
We would like to thank Fr. Jim and Parish staff for
generously supporting our efforts in the community, the
Knights of Columbus for their Reverse Collections, the
Giving Tree Committee and the Italian American
Charitable Organization for remembering our families in
the Holiday seasons, the Harvest Sunday and SWS
Student Council for their food drives, and all of our
Benefactors for assistance in meeting our mission to bring
Christ’s love to those in need.

PRAYER OF THE YEAR
OF THE EUCHARIST
ANIMA CHRISTI
Jesus, may all that is you flow into me.
May your Body and Blood be my food and drink.
May you passion and death be my strength and life.
Jesus, with you by my side enough has been given.
May the shelter I seek be the shadow of your cross.
Let me not run from the love which you offer,
but hold me safe from the forces of evil.
On each of my dyings shed your light and your love.
Keep calling to me until that day comes.
when, with your saints, I may praise you forever.
Amen

WORDS OF OUR LADY OF
GUADALUPE TO JUAN DIEGO
“Let not your heart be disturbed. Do not fear that
sickness, nor any other sickness or anguish. Am I not
here, who is your Mother? Are you not under my
protection? Am I not your health? Are you not happily
within my fold? What else do you wish? Do not grieve
nor be disturbed by anything.”
