THOSE WHO SERVE JULY 2016
This newsletter is a combination issue for June and July. May and early June are busy times in the life
of our church and our families with sports, recitals, end of grade testing and graduations. As we turn
the corner of school ending and the arrival of summer vacations, our focuses will change at the church
and in our families. There will be three missions trips: Honduras Medical Mission Team, Senior High
Youth Carolina Cross Connection to Wilkes County, and the Middle School Mission Trip to Lake Junaluska and Waynesville, NC. Vacation Bible School will be a highlight of the summer – June 12 – 16. Be
sure to invite your neighbors, relatives and friends for our Deep Sea Discovery. Also be attuned to
moving vans bringing new families to your neighborhood. Go and meet them right away. Welcome
them and invite them to attend our church. Share and show the love of Christ with them. Interestingly,
studies show that people who have recently moved are more receptive to an invitation to Christ and
the church than the average person. We have a wonderful church to share. We have a call from God
and a vision for ministry that exceeds our capacity. Let us reach out to others who need Christ, a
church home and an invitation to share their gifts and abilities with confidence in Christ.

SUMMER CAMP
Summer Day Camp Registration is in Full Swing. If you know any children who will be 5 by August 31 all
the way up to rising 8th grade, we would love to have them for Summer Day Camp 2016! Please contact
Mrs. Allison at 336-753-1900 or email Allison@firstumcmocksville.org for more information! Stay tuned
for After School Registration. Right now we currently serve Grades K-8th at Mocksville Elementary and
South Davie Middle School. We would love to help meet your after school care needs!
Congratulations to all of our 4 year old preschoolers who graduated Thursday, May 26. The ceremony
was held in the Family Life Center. Ms. Dietre Junker and Ms. Allison Gupton have done a wonderful job
with the children this year preparing them for Kindergarten next fall. After they have learned much from
them and their previous 2 & 3 year old class teachers, Ms. Susan Domanski, Ms. Andrea Branham, Ms.
Susan Myers, Ms. Holly Sinopoli and Ms. Anita Pulaski, we feel certain that they will continue to be excellent students for the remaining years of their education. We are at our maximum numbers for the
2016/2017 school year except for the Monday & Wednesday two year old program. There are vacancies
in this group, but we expect those to fill during the summer.
Please call Barbara Basham for more information.

HAPPENINGS
When Ministry
Our When ministry is continuing to grow as we reach out to our neighbors in need with a delicious meal on Thursday evenings. We have a dedicated group of workers preparing, boxing and delivering about 80 meals per
week. Over 1100 meals have been shared to date. Recipients are in temporary housing at area motels and another group living in tents in the eastern part of the county. Many of the recipients have children in their families. The When Ministry needs additional volunteer help. If you can commit or would like more information to
see how you might serve based on your preferences and availability, please contact Mike Duncan at 540-5214619 or bwarrior206@yahoo.com
Purse Project
We celebrate the many purses that the UM Women recently packed with personal care products for distribution
to homeless women in our area. They were dedicated at worship on Sunday, May 22nd.
Fifth Sunday Brunch
Please join in the celebration of those who have joined our church in the past year at the Brunch on Sunday, May
29 at 10am in the Family Life Center. The brunch will be provided.
Carolinas Honduras Medical Mission Trip
The Trip will be June 24-July 3 and led by Dr. Joel Edwards. Team members from our church include Don Bowles,
John Sykes and Glenn Myers.
Family Promise
Family Promise is new to Davie County and is in the formation stage. The mission is to provide a program to help
homeless families with children get work, save up for housing down payments while housed by area churches. We would like to share the details with various groups in our church. Presentations have been made to several groups in our church already and Dean and Sheri Hendrix are available to arrange a presentation for your group
as well.
Haitian Pastor Visit
Rev. Jean Marie Admirable will be visiting our church in late July and speaking on Sunday, July 24 at both services. He has been hosting our building teams in recent years and we are excited for you to hear from him.
Wedding Policy
A new Wedding Policy was approved at the last Administrative Board and is available from the church office and it
is available on the church website under WEDDINGS.
Building Committee
Our Building Committee has met once and is in the process of working with architect John Fuller to study our
needs and options. A topographical study and survey will also be done.

DEEP ROOTS COMMUNITY GARDENS
ANNUAL CONFERENCE is June 15-19
Lake Junaluska
The deer have found us!!!!!!
We have been so lucky these past few years, but our sweet potatoes at the SFJ were just too much of a
temptation!! We have been trying all sorts of wonderful things, but alas, have decided that a solar powered electric fence may be the best answer! How interesting is the word “gardening” . It encompasses
so many areas of life!! We would like to focus on the wonderful new things that have also been going on
in the garden. Boy scout troop 732 of Advance has stepped in and has volunteered to help our gardens
in so many ways! They are going to set up a mowing program and help to take care of mowing the
lawns this summer. What a wonderful blessing. They have also offered to help with various projects
around the gardens and we thank them so very much. Nick Koon from boy scout troop 575 has contacted us for an Eagle scout project and he will be building a lean-to to the SFJ garden shed, a ramp and a
new more permanent sign with the help of other boy scouts. Lowes Hardeware of Mocksville has
offered to fund this project for Nick. Thank you both! We do still need more 5-gallon buckets – about
20 will do it! We will also be having our second garden community work day on Saturday, June 25 th. We
will be finishing spreading the wood chips, or building new compost bins at the Clement garden site. We
would like to incorporate a picnic on that day too! So come and join us for a good time! We are also
considering laying a pathway of stone from the Clement garden sign to the garden gate and displaying
the wonderful piece of artwork that Melanie Holloway made for us. We are looking for some flat stone
and some great ideas on how to display her work so everyone can see it, while having it protected as
well! Please give us your input on this! We would love to hear your thoughts. We would like to close
with a comment taken from the book, “The Abundance of the Garden” by Douglas E. Prevette. “ God
has given humankind dominion over the earth with the responsibility to care for it wisely. We can reflect God’s ways through our stewardship of the earth, and by how we share God’s bounty with others.
We are rewarded when others are blessed from the sights, sounds, and tastes of our gardens. We are
reminded that God is still at work and life is renewed in season”. God is good!

The WHEN Ministry meets on Thursday afternoons at 3:00 pm in the Family Life Center

UMW READING PROGRAM
Dear Readers, you will be pleased to learn that eleven (11)
new books have appeared on the UMW bookcase in the
Family Life Center. There are three Leadership choices
including I am Malala, the Girl Who Stood Up for Education
and was Shot by the Taliban. You will also find two Social
Action (one is a bonus book that counts as reading two),
two Education for Mission, three Nurturing and one Spiritual Growth. The spiritual growth book is Key United
Methodist Beliefs by William J. Abraham. Do stop by and
find the new books, each is marked with 2016 on the top.
You will discover intriguing titles like I Love Growing Older,
But I'll Never Grow Old or In Defense of Food or The
Weight of Mercy. There is something for everyone.
Anyone is welcome to read the books and magazines on
the UMW bookcase. You need not be reading for a certificate or a UMW member. To help us keep track of the
books though, please mark down what you borrowed and
your name and number in the spiral notebook on top of
the bookcase.
Those who do read toward earning
UMW recognition, remember Level I is five books and regular reading of Response magazine. Level II involves reading ten books and both Response and New World Outlook
magazines. Both magazines are found on the bookcase.
