Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear Parishioners,
I had a wonderful first weekend at Holy Rosary! I felt so warmly
welcomed at all the masses. There was an overflowing of smiles,
welcomes and handshakes - so many faces, stories, and lives.
Time is not sufficient to fully grasp the depth of each person and their story.
So many people I met have been in the parish for decades and decades. I met
a parishioner who was 103 years old, and another who was 95, both still
walking under their own steam! The living history, relationships and families
that have been connected to this parish over so many years is amazing and
will not truly be appreciated until we see how the weave of our lives are all
connected in the mystery of God and into eternity. Our Christian faith tells us
that in death life is changed, not ended. So all the connections and relationships we make on earth will remain and continue forever.
I am so happy that the Lord has allowed me to journey here with you in this
place we call Edmonds. As your new priest and pastor I hope to bring Jesus
to you. He is the one person who can unite us deeper in bonds of love than
anything else can, and for all eternity. And even if time and space is too short
for us to get to know each other personally as we would like, we will have all
eternity in Christ to do so. Christ is the beginning, the present and the end of
all time, the Alpha and Omega. To know him and to love him is to tie into the
“deeper mystery” that transcends time and place. There in Christ’s Kingdom
we will all be gathered around the great wedding banquet table united in
God’s love.

What are indulgences, and how do you obtain them?
Last week, I mentioned St. Augustine’s aphorism,
“Love, and do what you will.” It’s one of those
phrases that’s easy to remember and just as easy to
misunderstand.
An indulgence is “a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already
been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is
duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church.” (CCC 1471,
CIC 992)
For example, the first time I heard that phrase, I
thought, “Great! I can do whatever I want!” I justified it as “being true to myself” as Polonius famously advises in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. But I was
misunderstanding what Augustine meant by “Love.”
Augustine wrote this phrase while commenting on
the first letter of John, specifically the passage: “In
this way the love of God was revealed to us: God
sent his only Son into the world so that we might
have life through him.” (I John 4:9) You might be
more familiar with the verses that come right before
this: “Beloved, let us love one another, because love
is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God
and knows God. Whoever is without love does not
know God, for God is love.” (I John 4:7-8)
Love, for Augustine, is not what I want or value or
pursue. No, Augustine means the love that Jesus
shows us, and asks of us: forgive one another, bless
our enemies, lay down our lives for our friends. If I
love as God loves, if I let Christ’s love be my standard, then whatever I desire will be according to
God’s will.
How has God loved you, in your life? How can you
love your neighbor as God has loved you?
Every sin, even the smallest, harms our relationship
with God and neighbor, hurts those directly affected,
and weakens our ability to face temptation. Our relationships can be healed through forgiveness (which
happens in the sacrament of Reconciliation), and we
can make reparation to others for the harm we’ve
done. But our own attachment to objects of temptation
is purified through acts of penance, which canon law
calls “temporal punishment.”
Generally, indulgences require that you perform an
“indulgenced action,” and around the same time make
sacramental Confession, receive Communion, and
pray for the Pope’s intentions. A plenary indulgence
also requires that we “have the interior disposition of
complete detachment from sin, even venial sin.”
For this Holy Year of Mercy, the indulgenced actions
include: visiting a Holy Door such as the one at
St. James Cathedral, or performing any of the
Spiritual or Corporal Works of Mercy.

MARRIAGE & FAMILY LIFE
Family Life: A couple of years ago I joined the Catholic Psychotherapy Association (CPA). Its goal is to link
Catholic teaching on family and the human person to psychotherapy. I totally agree with that goal because far too
often psychotherapy and Catholic anthropology communicate far too seldom. That’s a tragedy because it leaves
believers and non-believers confused about and alienated from one another.
Theology has much to teach the applied sciences about the purposes of creation and our place in that
creation. That’s important because many who come to therapy are, in fact, anxious (afraid) about the world we live
in, or depressed (sad) at the pointlessness of life, or disillusioned about the lack of meaning in life and relationships.
Our faith is wonderful at offering us something to believe in, calming our anxieties by trusting in God, filling us
with hope for the future and objects we can be passionate about, that is, loving God, loving others, and even loving
ourselves.
On the other hand, the social sciences have much to offer the Church. The Church may have great content but the
social sciences have great tools. We fail people if we don’t use the best tools available. An even bigger issue is
what some members of CPA are pointing out in research papers, that much of the Church’s ethics and moral
theology are built on what’s called “natural law.” However, when used as only a logical inference it convinces very
few. However, natural law is in many ways a compilation of observed experience about human behavior. The
human sciences measure human behavior and for those who look, those measurements over and over support many
of the moral theology positions of the Church. I’ll have much more on this as we go along.

This is the Good Samaritan’s instructions to an innkeeper regarding the care
of the man who fell victim to robbers. The essence of stewardship is taking
care of what has been entrusted to us. We do not very often have the opportunity to do something as courageous and heroic as the Good Samaritan.
But almost all of us, like the innkeeper, have responsibilities walk into our
lives and get entrusted to us: family, jobs, the Church, strangers. We need to
take care of all of these.
Welcome, Fr. Gilmore! This week is Fr. Gilmore’s second as shepherd of
Holy Rosary. Please introduce yourselves and make him feel welcomed!
As of July 5, we have received $194,392 in gifts and pledges for the Annual
Catholic Appeal, exceeding our goal of $180,000! Please keep in mind that
next May the parish will be responsible for any cash
shortfall; it is very important that those pledges come
through! Any donations over the goal will be returned to
the parish to put modern windows in the rectory. Help
give Fr. Gilmore a true rectory-warming present! Those

Youth and Young Adult Ministry
Youth Migrant Project is a week-long service project for Catholic youth in the Archdiocese
of Seattle. Holy Rosary Parish has participated in this project for over 25 years. Last month
38 junior high and high school students spent their days serving the migrant families, helping
on farms and food banks and preparing meals. It was a wonderful week of service, learning
and fun. Thank you, parishioners, for all your support and donations!
It feels great to take the words of our Lord and put them into action! We find out first hand that when you give
you receive so much more!

SACRAMENTAL INFORMATION
INFANT BAPTISM - Parents attend two sessions to prepare to celebrate this sacrament. We encourage parents to attend
before the birth or adoption of their child. Baptisms are normally celebrated at a weekend liturgy on the first weekend of
the month. Please call the Parish Office six weeks prior to the desired Baptism date to register your child. Next preparation sessions are on Monday evenings, July 18th and 25th, 2016 from 7-8:30PM in the Parish Office. Upcoming
baptisms are on August 7th at 11AM, September 3rd at 5PM and October 2nd at 11AM.
MARRIAGE - Couples wishing to celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage should contact the parish at least 6 months prior
to the desired date. Preparation for celebrating and living the sacrament is required. Contact Deacon Ray Biersbach for
more information.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK - is celebrated any time there is a serious illness or health crisis. Contact the parish office to
make arrangements. The sacrament is also celebrated periodically at a Sunday liturgy and on weekdays.
FUNERALS - Please contact the parish after a death, and before making arrangements with a funeral home.
CONFIRMATION - The Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated yearly for those who are high school juniors or seniors.
Attendance at preparation sessions is required.
Adults who have not been confirmed may also celebrate the sacrament. Contact Angus McDonell, Youth Minister, for
information about preparation.
FIRST RECONCILIATION/FIRST EUCHARIST - Children are prepared for these sacraments after completing a year of
remote preparation in either the school or religious education program. Parents attend preparation sessions for each
sacrament. Contact Mary Hupf, Director for Elementary Faith Formation, for more information.
ADULT INITIATION - Adults who wish to join the Catholic Faith participate in sessions of the Rite of Christian Initiation
of Adults (R.C.I.A.) Contact Robert King, Associate for Adult Faith Formation, for further information.
