IREA Petition
All Arapahoe Library District locations will
be closed on Fri., December 24 and Sat.,
December 25 in observation of Christmas
Eve and Christmas Day. In addition, all
locations will be open until 5 p.m. Fri.,
December 31 for New Year’s Eve and will
be closed on Sat., January 1 for New Year’s
Day. For more information, please call 303LIBRARY (303-542-7279).
Thank you to all who signed the
petition for burying the power lines
along Arapahoe Road and Chapparal
properties. The petitions were given to
Bill Schroeder from IREA at the HOA
meeting on November 8th. IREA talked
to us about burying the lines from Waco
to the substation east of Estancia. They
would credit us with their cost to move
the poles and we need to fund the
remainder of the cost (estimate
$250,000). This is what was done with
Foxfield and The Farms. We are pursuing a number of avenues in the hope of
being able to get the lines buried. The
Chapparal Metro District is looking into
what they can do to help with the funding. We are in the very beginning stages
of this project and there will be a lot to
do, to bring it to completion. We will
continue to work with IREA, Estancia,
and the City of Centennial.

Christmas at Our House
December is the season we all love. We feverishly decorate,
cook and shop until the evening of the 24th. We put up a tree and
spend the evening decorating it together. On Christmas Day, our
parents watch as their children demolish the presents they’ve so
carefully wrapped. They enjoy seeing the absolute delight on our
faces when we open the gift we have been wanting. After the
opening of the presents, the family troops into the living room to
watch football and eat all the sugary foods we only eat on special
occasions. Later that day, our extended family comes over and we
spend the rest of the afternoon opening more presents and eating
more food. When the relatives leave, we lie back on the couch to
rest. Before we know it Christmas is over. We pack up all the decorations and put away our Christmas recipes. Christmas is over
until the next year. This is how we enjoy our December holiday,
what do you do to enjoy yours? However your family celebrates
the December holidays, I hope you have a wonderful season with
your family and friends. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and
Seasons Greetings!

Minutes of the meeting held: Monday, November 8, 2010

Christopher Worley, Jean Worley, and Kel Muckleroy. Other

Call to order: 7:00 p.m.
New Business
a. Burying the power lines
b. There are no plans to widen Arapahoe Rd. in front of
Chapparal and Estancia due to a lack of money.
c. There is $50,000 set aside by the City of Centennial to
widen Arapahoe Rd. at the left turn lane into Chapparal Circle
East. This is because of the continued accidents into the guardrail
at that turn. However, in order to widen it at that site, they need
to move the power lines and there is no money to do that.
d. IREA notes that it would cost about $350,000 to move the
power lines without burying them. It would cost about $500,000
to move and bury the lines.
e. Therefore, IREA is willing to bury the lines if someone
comes up with the difference, about $250,000. In addition, the
homeowners along Arapahoe Rd. would have to give an easement
for the project to move forward.
Meeting adjourned at 8:10 due to a lack of a quorum.
Next meeting is December 13th at Creekside Elementary.

IMPORTANT DATES FOR 10-11
Winter Break, Dec 20-31, 2010, (School resumes Jan 3, 2011)
Spring Break, Mar 28-Apr 1, 2011
The district’s 10-11 four-track, transitional and traditional
calendars are available on the district’s website at www.cherry
creekschools.org.
CCSD ADOPTS NEW ACCREDITATION SYSTEM
One hundred percent of the schools in the Cherry Creek
School District are in the top two plan categories of the new
school performance framework recently developed by the
Colorado Department of Education. None of the district’s schools
are in the bottom two categories.
Cherry Creek’s new system uses the state’s School
Performance Framework (SPF) as the basis for assigning schools
to accreditation categories. The Colorado Department of
Education (CDE) developed the School Performance Framework,
also in response to Senate Bill 163. The law identifies four indicators which must be included in the SPF:
• Achievement (percent of students scoring proficient or
advanced on CSAP tests)
• Growth (how much growth students displayed on CSAP
from last year)
• Growth Gaps (achievement differentiated by race free and
reduced lunch, special education and English language
proficiency).
• College and Workforce Readiness (ACT scores, graduation rate and dropout rate)
The State Board of Education, in conjunction with CDE,
established state-wide performance targets for each indicator.
Under the SPF accreditation system there are four accreditation
categories for schools. They are:
• Accredited with Performance Plan – meeting or exceeding
state performance targets
• Accredited with Improvement Plan – approaching or
meeting state performance targets
• Accredited with Priority Improvement Plan – not meeting
state targets, requires state supervision and rapid improvement
• Accredited with Turnaround Plan – school performance is
well below state targets and state intervention is required
Ninety-four percent of Cherry Creek schools fell in the highest plan category (Performance Plan) compared to 62% of
schools statewide. Six percent of Cherry Creek schools were in
the second highest group (Improvement Plan) compared to 21%
of schools statewide.
School districts may adopt the School Performance
Framework for accrediting the district overall, and may choose
their own labels for accrediting schools. The Cherry Creek
School District has decided to use the state’s categories for
accrediting each of its schools to create a consistent system.

CHAMBERS
“This is strong evidence that the Cherry Creek School District
is a high-performing district that prepares students for success in
higher education and the workforce,” said Board of Education
President Aagje Barber. “We are proud of our academic excellence and our commitment to closing the achievement gap.”
FIRST AMERICAN STATE BANK FITNESS FESTIVAL
DONATES $90,000 TO CAP
The numbers are in! This year’s First American State Bank
Fitness Festival attracted nearly 3,000 people and as a result
donated $90,000 to the Community Asset Project (CAP), a program of the Cherry Creek School District that helps area youth
reach their individual and academic potential.
Held in Greenwood Village September 11, the event included
a moment of silence in remembrance of 9/11, the Kaiser
Permanente 5K Run/Walk, fitness activities for the entire family,
entertainment, sports celebrities including former Bronco Ed
McCaffrey, and one of the best after parties in the nation.
In the past decade, the Festival has attracted thousands of participants, donated nearly $700,000 for CAP-supported programs,
and become a national model for business-school-community
partnerships.
Support from CAP allows the CCSD Wellness Office to fund
many programs in the Elementary, Middle and High schools
including:
• Positive Behavior Support (PBS) – PBS is a broad range
of systemic and individualized strategies for achieving
important social and learning outcomes while preventing
problem behaviors with all students.
• Research-Based Drug/Alcohol Prevention Programming –

Used Book Sale Made More ‘Cents’ this Year
The recent Friends of the Arapahoe Library District Annual
Used Book Sale at Koelbel Library enjoyed record success with
sales totaling nearly $46,000 during its four-day event. Also of
note, 170 community volunteers contributed a total of 650 hours
of service to the book sale.
The funds collected during the sale are allocated to the
Library District in the form of grants, supporting programs and
projects like the Summer Reading program, library materials,
equipment and more. So far in 2010, the Friends Board has granted the Library District more than $124,000.
The Friends would like to thank Panache Catering and PepsiCola for their generous contributions in support of this event.
The Friends of the Arapahoe Library District is a special
group of 460 library lovers and supporters whose primary objective is to raise funds by selling used books and Friends memberships. For more information about becoming involved with the
Friends, please contact Louise Richey at 303-792-8951.
