What a wonderful, beautiful time of the year! I am filled with joy to let everyone know that my mother, Elma, is back from the Philippines. She is 70 years young, happy and excited to receive her birthday gift – a pilgrimage to Portugal, Spain and France, visiting the Marian Shrines that she introduced to me when I was a child. We will go to Our Lady of Fatima. I remember how she sang a Fatima song whenever we prayed the rosary back when I was in grade school. We will go to Our Lady of Lourdes. Our mission chapel in the Philippines is dedicated to this Marian title, and so, this is a lifelong dream of hers to be able to visit the actual place where Mary appeared to Bernadette. I grew up looking up to the statue of Mary and Bernadette in the sanctuary of our humble chapel where I was baptized, where I was blessed for priesthood at age 3, where I served as an adolescent, and where I celebrated my thanksgiving mass after my ordination. To be able to share this journey with my mother will be an absolutely beautiful memory. My mother and I will be on the Marian pilgrimage from September 14-24, and will be back in Kankakee on September 28. I am blessed. In the light of the pilgrimage, I invite our parishioners to send messages and prayers to Mary, or any intention that may be offered there. Some of my friends and parishioners in the past have also asked me to offer a candle or a mass for their loved ones. These are all welcome, and I am humbled to say the prayers on behalf of our loved ones here. Mama Elma has been here in Kankakee twice before, and she knows many parishioners of Saint Teresa. She has also been to Saint Martins, and was in fact with me at last year’s Rummage Sale, which she loved so much. J But I am excited to introduce her to the bigger community of Saint Martin and Saint Rose, so that when I talk about her in some of my homilies or writings, our parishioners can have a mental picture of her. It is such a unique experience, that although my mother was not able to be physically present when I was ordained a priest in 2004 (her visa applications were denied by the USA), she is now able to make up for lost time, and I am hoping that she will be here on my installation as pastor of St. Rose and St. Martin, as she was here when I was installed pastor of St. Teresa in 2011. This whole spiritual experience of sharing my mother to everyone in our church, is probably the same spiritual disposition that Jesus had when he said, “Behold you mother…” when He offered the Virgin Mary as the mother of the Church. It makes all the sense in the world that these relationships are forged around our common love of God and the Church. I would not be a priest today if not for the many spiritual lessons and moral values that my mother inculcated in me since I was a child. And even today, when I think of her dedication to serving our local church in the Northern Philippines, I cannot help but also be inspired to work hard for the Church where I am a servant for our churches in Kankakee. Thank you, my dear parishioners, for your love for your pastor and his mother. God bless you always. Hungry for more discoveries, Fr. PAGE 6 HOLY SPIRIT MASS AQUINAS CATHOLIC ACADEMY SEPT. 2, 2015 It is always a question, how meaningful is my Sunday worship. When we look back are we really satisfied in what we are doing? Do I really benefit from the long years of my spiritual pursuit as a true catholic? Some times people leave the Catholic Church thinking that there is no outcome from their long years of religious practices. But in fact we are growing in spirit and grace. These would be invisible but we are getting powered by the Almighty. Recently I read an article that reveals a reality. It goes like this: A Churchgoer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. “I’ve gone for 30 years now,” he wrote, “and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can’t remember a single one of them. So, I think I’m wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all.” This started a real controversy in the “Letters to the Editor” column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher: “I’ve been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this. They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to Church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!” Jesus himself said the kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. When the seed is sowed it began to grow and becomes a tree. In the course of time it is growing but its growth is invisible. My faith in God is not controlled by any human factors; it is not the size of the church, it is not the quality of the music or the eloquence of the preachers that forms my faith but rather it is my mental disposition. The more I desire Him the more I get it. As we approach the Lord, we must be like an empty bottle. The more I make myself humble and empty the more I could fill myself. Remember, it is not my ability or the ability of the other people that make my faith strong it is the work of God. We just let God do the work in us, that makes me a strong and faithful catholic. Have a Blessed week! Rev. Roy Jacob CMI 23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time Sept. 6, 2015 The passage from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah foreshadows the mighty deeds Christ will accomplish, the most significant of which is the means for our salvation. The Gospel passage from St. Mark cites a powerful healing performed by Jesus in Gentile territory. Together with the Letter of St. James, it is clear God does not discriminate about who is invited into the Christian community, and neither should we. Good stewards acknowledge that all who embrace the Lord as His disciples are welcome into His Kingdom. RESPECT LIFE PRAYER “Do not fear; I am with you; Do not be anxious: I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.” Plan pastoral para actividades pro vida Society of St. Vincent de Paul Who are we? Find things in your life that give you a feeling of love, strength, inner cal, or relief. Take up a hobby/sport, or simply spend time with close friends and family. Do something that doesn’t feel like routine and something that doesn’t have to be forced or required on you.
