GREETING FROM INTERIM ACSS PRESIDENT
The Lord has risen. Alleluia!
Happy Easter to you and your family.
The Lenten journey has concluded and we
now celebrate the resurrection of our
Lord, Jesus Christ. The Easter season is
one of happiness and celebration of life.
This season also leads us into the spring
of the year. Soon we will experience
new plant life, warmer temperatures and
more outdoor activities.
This is the time of the school year
where attention is also being given to
planning for next year. Recruiting is just
one of these activities. The more students
that can experience what we offer in
terms of spiritual, academic and extracurricular growth the stronger they will be
in their personal formation. I encourage
you to help us recruit students for our
schools. You can contact any of the
schools for information or provide us with
the names of someone you know that
could benefit from an excellent Catholic
education.

process, the tuition rates for the 20152016 school year have been established.
Taking into account increased operating expenses for electric rates, instructional materials and supplies, technology
needs, maintenance costs, health
insurance and salary increases, the tuition
rates will be increased. The increase can
be seen in the chart below.
Sacred Heart Parish and St. Mary’s
Parish financial support amounts to
$1,154,736.00 per year or $2,264.00 per
student.
We are grateful for their
continued support. Without this support,
one could clearly see what tuition would
be by adding that amount to the
2015-2016 rates below.
On average, the cost to educate a
student in the ACSS for the 2015-2016
school year is projected to be $6,490.00.
Tuition is expected to account for 43% of
the budget, parish support 32% of the
budget and the remainder from fundraising, donations, Roncalli Ball, Roncalli
Foundation, Nearly New Shop, Booster
Club, PTO, among other events and
activities.

OPEN HOUSE/VISIT DAY
April 20 is a day that the public schools are not in session but Roncalli is.
If you know a family that might be interested in checking us out, please encourage them to
contact us (or tell us about them). On this day, parents can visit and tour our buildings, and
children can shadow Roncalli students--spend all or part of the day here to see what a
school day is like. It's a great way to "kick the tires." Ask your children to talk to their
friends too! (We can schedule shadow appointments on other dates too.) There will also be
an open house in each building from 5:30-7pm on that day.
Thank You!
Primrose Retirement Community and the Midcontinent Foundation (the charitable arm of
Midcontinent Communications) for helping Roncalli install handrails in the gym. This was a
valuable contribution to make our gym safer and more inviting for all of our friends and fans.
Thanks for your support!

RONCALLI
INTERCESSORS
For many years the ACSS has had a wonderful ministry called Roncalli Intercessors. Close to a
hundred volunteers have been a part of this ministry. Their soul purpose is to lift up in prayer the
students, faculty/staff and families of the Aberdeen Catholic School System.
Every day that school is in session volunteers come to the Chapel at Roncalli High School and spend
an hour in prayer. Each one that comes into the chapel gets a packet of materials to help them in their
prayer including a list of twenty or so names to specifically pray for during their hour.
Over the years volunteers have come and gone, parents, grandparents, school board members and
friends of Roncalli. We have always tried to have someone in the chapel every hour that school is in
session.
We are at a time when our volunteer base is low and many time slots are open. We have cause to
re-examine this ministry and discover new ways to get more volunteers involved in this important
ministry. We plan to make a few changes to make this ministry accessible to more volunteers.
 Intercessors do not have to be on-site at the high school to pray. You can volunteer to pray from your
home, one of the parish churches or even from the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel at Avera
St. Lukes.
 Intercessors can commit to a specific day and time during the week to pray or if your schedule
changes week to week you can commit to an hour anytime during the week that fits your schedule.
It isn’t too late to join this ministry this year!! Contact Michala Heller at the Central Office,
226-2100, if you would like to try it this year or if you want to join this ministry in the 2015-2016 school
year. We are so grateful to all those who keep our students, faculty/staff and families in their prayers and
in a special way the Intercessors who have been and are involved in this beautiful ministry.
Prayers for ACSS
Dear Lord Jesus, Lover of children, bless and help with Your divine power and grace the students at Roncalli.
Look on them tenderly , most merciful and mighty Savior. They are the treasure of Your church, the seed from
which the Church of tomorrow must spring. Pour forth on their hearts and souls Your effective and precious
graces. Make them pure without stain, docile without weakness, wise without pride, and lovers of Christian culture. Help them, dear Lord, to grow upright characters which will resist both the open and hidden attacks of the
world, the flesh, and the devil. Fill them with a holy zeal to use to the utmost the fits you have given them. Aid
them to give to the Church, community, and the state the service of eminence which You desire, by doing their
duty as well as they can.
Help in a special way, dear Jesus, those whom You have called to instruct our children. Grant them the wisdom
and patience necessary to teach as you taught; and never let them waiver from teaching Your truths. Bring them
all safe through the storms and battles of the world to the happy home of heaven, when You will be their reward,
as You are now their help, and stay where, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, You live and reign, on God, world
without end. Amen
Almighty God, because we love our children, because our hearts yearn for their schools, we cannot remain silent. We will not stop praying until their righteousness shines like the dawn, and their salvation
blazes like a burning torch. May they be called the Holy People and the People Redeemed by the Lord.
And may their schools be known as the Desirable Place and the City No Longer Forsaken . In Jesus’
name, amen. – by Fern Nichols

CATHOLIC UNITED SCHOOLS RAFFLE
Catholic Schools in MN, ND, and SD raised an outstanding $1,019,695 during the recent Catholic
United Raffle. Thank you so much for helping Aberdeen Roncalli schools raise close to $11,000 for
the Religion departments.
Brenda Mitzel stated that she truly enjoyed working with the children to raise money for our
school. The incentives included things such as lunch at a restaurant to which one student said, “I
liked getting to leave school for lunch and best of all getting a toy in my happy meal.”
At RPS a second grader served as “Principal for ½ day.” Her favorite part was getting to choose
the song to play over the speaker system at the end of the day.
Mark Stone relayed at RES that they had good participation and fun with the prizes and incentives. Eight students had lunch at the Pizza Ranch for being top sellers in their classroom. Mr. Stone
said, “We're proud of the students and appreciate their participation.”
Peggy Cox awarded the top sellers in each class lunch at a restaurant. The top seller for the entire
school system was Wyatt Artz, for the second year in a row. The incentives were fun and given randomly throughout the fundraiser.
Thanks for helping to support our Roncalli school system keep tuition affordable and for encouraging your children to have fun while supporting the Religion curriculum with this fund raiser.

Guidance Counselors: TESTING SCHEDULE
Roncalli Jr./Sr High Spring Testing Information
There are some important tests coming up this spring that parents and students should be aware of. It is
important that students do their best when taking the various standardized tests as this information is used
to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses for both the individual students and the school as a whole.
The week of April 20th, the eighth and tenth grade students will be taking the SAT 10 test. The SAT 10
measures the student’s level of achievement in the core areas of our curriculum. During the week of April
27th the seventh grade students will be taking the Smarter Balance assessments. The Smarter Balance tests
are web based and consist of math and reading/language arts. The tenth grade students will have an opportunity to take a practice ACT exam during the first week of May. This test is called Aspire and is also a
computer based exam. There is a small fee for taking this exam. The Aspire test is not required, but it is
strongly recommended that students take this exam to help prepare for the ACT which is a very important
test in relation to college entrance requirements and scholarships. I will be sending a more detailed schedule to parents by the end of March.
Test Taking Tips
Taking standardized tests can be worrisome. Use these tips to help prepare and enhance
your performance on your upcoming tests.
Before the test, get a good night’s rest and eat a healthy breakfast
Don’t get distracted by other test takers
Don’t fall into the trap of looking for a pattern in the answers
Read the instructions and each question carefully
Don’t second guess your first answer unless you are 100% certain

Week of 4/20-SAT 10 for grades 8 and 10.

Week of 4/27-Smarter Balance Test for grade 7.

Week of 5/4-Aspire testing for grade 10.
ASPIRE Testing Schedule
The ASPIRE test is a grade 10 level practice ACT exam. The test is optional but I expect that all or most
of the 10th graders will choose to take the exam.

Roncalli Elementary/Primary Spring Testing Information
The state required Standford Achievement Test (SAT 10) and OLSAT tests will be given the week of April 20-25. The
SAT 10 will involve grades two and six. OLSAT will include fourth grade only.
In order to help your child perform at an optimum level, it is very important that he/she receive proper sleep and a
nourishing breakfast throughout the test period. Research has shown that both of the above influence student performance on tests. Also, students will need at least two #2 pencils for testing.
It is very important that your child be present on these days as they are required to take these tests to meet
state accreditation standards. Absent students will have to make up testing time at the school’s convenience. Please make every effort not to schedule appointments during test times.
Testing will take place on various dates and times on April 20-25. Your child’s teacher will follow up with information
regarding exact dates and times for the testing. Each grade has a slightly different schedule.

Ian Pharris represented Roncalli well at the
State Mathcounts Competition where the top 36
students from South Dakota competed on Saturday, March 14th in Pierre. He placed in the
middle of the competitors and gained valuable
knowledge for the rest of his Roncalli team next
year. The top 4 students are representing South
Dakota in Boston at the National Competition
on May 5 to 7. Maybe next year will be the
year to send a Roncalli Mathcounts student to
the Nationals in Orlando. Go Cavs.
Matt Schlosser and Austin Cihak helped the
CHS wrestling team to a 2nd place finish at the
State Wrestling Tournament, only 2.5 points
behind 1st. Matt placed 3rd and Austin placed
