Lana Garland—Food In A Minute
Leigh Kelly introduced Lana, she
told us about her career, she
trained as an actress, worked in
restaurants and was also a Nanny.
She has 2 children and lives on Te
Atatu Peninsula.
She replaced Allyson Gofton on the
TV show food in a minute. She
gave us an insight behind the
scenes, in a typical day the programme can take up to 4 hours to
shoot for one minute on TV. She is
also involved in recipe
development, scripts and writing for Woman’s Day.
She gave us some easy and fun communication techniques to
prepare for public speaking. She is such a fun speaker giving
us lots of laughs throughout the evening.

Lana has emailed thanking the club for the invitation and opportunity to speak at Rotary last week. She really enjoyed herself and meeting everyone.

Muriwai Beach Safari
A group of Rotary Club of Henderson members and a few partners were lucky enough to participate in the
Unimog Safari organised by Ian Foster last Sunday. After meeting at Huapai, the group boarded the 1984
Mercedes Unimog ’MOGY 2’ which our driver Nigel has passionately restored over the last few years at great
expense. The vehicle now more closely resembles a tidy fully enclosed bus than a Spartan hulking troop and
equipment carrying vehicle like it did when owned by the New Zealand Army.
Nigel drove us to Muriwai where we entered the beach. He is a real character and had no end of stories to tell us
as we drove many miles up the beach towards South Head. Along the way we came across a sad looking dog
which Nigel had seen much further up the beach the day before. With the blessing of the group Nigel brought
aboard (to add to his own dog which was already onboard), and set about trying to figure out who owned it,
with the help of his wife on the other end of the cellphone and the dog’s registration collar.
We arrived at our Lunch destination where we met up with Ian Foster and Tom Hendriks Jr and their team of quad
bikers. Nigel put together gourmet burgers which we soon scoffed down before returning for seconds. Meanwhile
several members were treated to turns on the Quad bikes by Tom and Ian.
Within a short time the relieved looking owners of the lost dog turned up to claim it. As it turned out they had
spent the whole morning scouring the beach looking for him (‘Sampson’) and had even created flyers with his
picture. It was pleasing to see him reunited with his owners and testimony to Nigel’s thoughtfulness that this
outcome eventuated.
After a bit more of a spin further towards South Head, and an aborted attempt into the bombing range interior
(thwarted by overly soft sand), we returned back down the beach to a track through the pine forest. After
several unsuccessful attempts to get up the steep and uneven incline with soft sand off the beach into the track,
most of the passengers got off, which make any difference. Nigel had to decrease the tyre pressure in order to
get up the track. As soon has he did this the Unimog went straight up. We traversed the narrow winding track
through the forest, past a very picturesque lake and Lodge and on to Wilson Road which joins back up with the
main South Head Road about 16 kilometres from Parakai. We arrived back just before 4pm after a full day of fun.
I am sure that all that attended would agree that was a very enjoyable day and those that didn’t attend will be
kicking themselves that they didn’t come.
