Superintendent`s Message Hartland Teacher of the Year
Volume 77 Number 6 Superintendent’s Message June 2011 24 Pages Hartland Teacher of the Year Janet Sifferman, Superintendent In addition to congratulating Hartland’s 2011 graduating class, I would like to thank the entire Hartland community for their continued support of our school district during these trying financial times. The successful passage of the 18-mill Non-Homestead Millage will help us to continue to provide the programming and services for our students that the community has come to expect. It would be impossible for Hartland Schools to do what we do without your continued support. This is a wonderful place to live and work! Thank you. I would also like to congratulate Cyndi Kenrick on her successful bid for a seat on the Hartland Consolidated Schools Board of Education. Cyndi will fill the seat vacated by Elsie McPherson-Brown as of June 30. This is bittersweet as Elsie has given the Board eight years of dedicated and thoughtful service in addition to her many years volunteering in our buildings and serving on committees. Elsie has always put Hartland’s children first and has been a staunch advocate for them with our state representatives and legislature. We will miss her! Dear Hartland Graduating Seniors: Your career with Hartland Consolidated Schools is rapidly drawing to a close, and waiting for you at the end of this road is the rest of your life. While it seems inconceivable that you could possibly have better times and better friends than you have now, I promise you the best is yet to come! There will be numerous parties and celebrations awaiting you in the coming weeks and you certainly deserve each and every one of them. However, please remember, this is a very short period at the beginning of a very long and bright future. Do not do anything that will jeopardize your life or your future happiness. You certainly can have a great time and enjoy yourself without the aid of alcohol or drugs. The rules you learned here - Reason, Respect and Responsibility - should remain with you as you go through life. Please remember to think before you act. This time should be remembered for the joy and excitement of achievement, not as a time of tragedy. Congratulations to you and your families Respectfully, Janet Sifferman, Superintendent Non-Profit Organization U.S. Postage PAID Permit #2 Hartland, Michigan 48353 POSTAL CUSTOMER Inside This Issue Editor’s Page......................................... 2 School News................................... 3-11 Cromaine District Library................. 13 Business Directory............................. 14 HIP Happenings................................. 15 Places of Worship ............................ 16 Clubs & Organizations................ 17-18 Art & Entertainment.......................... 19 Recreation.....................................20-22 Scouting News.................................... 23 Congratulations to Matt Conway, Hartland Consolidated Schools’ 2011 Teacher of the Year. Matt has been teaching physical education and health classes at Round Elementary School for 15 years. He attended high school in Tiffin, Ohio. Matt received his Bachelor’s degree in Education from Eastern Michigan University and completed Master’s degree classes at Madonna. Matt and his wife Jennifer, a kindergarten teacher at Village Elementary School, live in Novi with their two children, son Griffin and daughter Reaghan. Matt enjoys time with his children, playing recreational sports and watching any and all Ohio State sport teams! Matt is well deserving of this honor. He loves doing the extra things that help students learn or gain a different perspective on learning. Matt has organized care package drives for military troops and developed a 5K running club so students can set a goal, train, and complete a new challenge. The 5 K club allows students to reach some sort of adversity, overcome it and accomplish a new goal. For many years Matt has organized the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser for the American Heart Association in which students at Round Elementary participate. During the past two years, Matt has enjoyed being a part of the literacy blocks at Round Elementary School where he has had a chance to work with students in a completely different environment. Matt’s favorite teaching moment was on October 12, 2007, the day Round Elementary School participated in a tribute to the troops with their “Me, You and the Red White and Blue” ceremony and care package drive. It was a truly uplifting experience. Matt’s daily motto is “How do you want to be remembered?” The best part of his job is watching a student grow in front of his eyes from Kindergarten -fourth grade and developing a connection with them along the way. He loves the fact that he gets to come in contact with EVERY Round Elementary student, every year! Hartland Consolidated Schools and the Hartland Education Association are proud to honor Matt as the 2011 Hartland Teacher of the Year. 2/ Community Life/June 2011 Editor’s Page Thanks for the donations We have received a total of $1,025.00 in donations for FY 10-11 to help offset the cost associated with publishing Community Life. The America’s Homecoming Queen Inc. is an organization that invites queens from all over the nation to compete for their state title. Once a girl has been chosen to represent each state, they move on to the national competition to compete for the title of America’s Homecoming Queen. Winners at the state and national level are also awarded with scholarships. After writing an essay, a series of interviews by the judges and an evening gown competition on April 9 and 10, Raime was chosen as one of the top 10 finalists. The finalists were then each asked a question which they answered in front of the judges and the audience. Miss Lamb’s efforts earned her the spot of Michigan’s Homecoming Queen. Raime was also voted Michigan’s Favorite Homecoming Queen from online voting. July 22-27 Raime will be going to the National competition at Disney Land in Anaheim, California to represent both the state of Michigan and Hartland High School. Raime is a student that has worked very hard through her four years at Hartland High and will be attending Michigan State University in the fall. The online voting does not stop here! Raime will also be competing for the title of America’s Favorite Homecoming queen. Help Raime win this title by visiting www.americanshomecomingqueen.com/national-queens/michigan-hartlandhigh-school/raime/ and voting for her. Each vote is $1.00 and donations go toward the scholarship fund. Don’t be a party to teenage drinking. It’s against the law.” Parents play a major role in their children’s choices about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. According to a 2008 nationwide report, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), found that 40% of youth ages 12-20 who used alcohol in the past 30 days reported receiving free alcohol from an adult. The Drug-Free Action Alliance of Ohio developed the “Parents Who Host Lose the Most. Don’t be a party to teenage drinking” public awareness campaign to provide parents and other concerned adults with accurate information about the health risks of underage drinking and the legal consequences of providing alcohol to youth. The campaign encourages parents and the community to send a unified message at prom and graduation time that teen alcohol consumption is not acceptable. It is illegal, unsafe, and unhealthy for anyone under 21 to drink alcohol. Underage use of alcohol is a serious problem that too often leads to harmful consequences for youth and their families. Parents and other adults can protect themselves and their teens by following these guidelines when hosting parties for their children: • Host safe, alcohol-free activities and events for youth during spring break, prom, and graduation. • Refuse to supply alcohol to children or allow drinking in your home or on your property. • Be at home when your teenager has a party. • Make sure your teenager’s friends do not bring alcohol into your home. • Talk to other parents about not providing alcohol at youth events. • Report underage drinking. This is the highest level that a newspaper can achieve based on a thorough newspaper evaluation by an out of state judge. They evaluate many categories such as coverage, design, photos/graphics, editorial content, and writing/editing. There were also several state individual awards that were given to our newspaper staff members. There were 73 schools and 2,963 total entries in this year’s state newspaper competition. Schools were broken up into four categories. We competed against the largest schools in the state for the following Division 1 awards: 1st place- Professionally Published Page- Jordan White; 2nd place- Professionally Published Page- Jordan White; Honorable Mention- Advertising Layout- Jordan White; Honorable Mention- Environmental Coverage- Kaila Pietila; Honorable Mention- News/ Feature Photo- Julia Olearis; Honorable Mention- Front page/newspaper style- Danielle Buffa Congratulations to Alyssa Caswell Alyssa’s Caswell’s one-act play, Another Darn Birthday, was chosen as one of the six finalists for Michigan State University’s Playwriting Contest. What an accomplishment! 810.626.2200 Students of the Month Kayla Harrison and Bryan Condra have been chosen for students of the month at HHS. They both have awesome attendance records for this year and have done exceptional academically. Kayla and Bryan are always willing to help. Congratulations Kayla and Bryan Link Crew welcomes the Class of 2015 On Tuesday, August 30 from 7:45am until 12:30pm Hartland High School will welcome the class of 2015 with a mandatory orientation program called Link Crew. This orientation is designed for students only. Parents will have an opportunity to join their student at the conclusion of the Link Orientation. The Link Crew program “links” junior and senior students with a “crew” of freshmen. For two days prior to the orientation, these junior and senior Link Leaders, from diverse social backgrounds, will be trained to lead small groups, to be role models to others, and to guide the activities for the orientation day. At the heart of the Link Crew program is the belief that these older students are capable of great leadership to the freshmen, as well as other students on campus. The purpose of the Link Crew orientation day is to give the freshmen a positive experience on the HHS campus. The day will begin with an exciting welcome. After a few warm-up activities, the students will participate in some get-to-know-you activities with their classmates and Link Leaders. Then students will be introduced to their assigned Link Leaders. Each crew will participate in small group activities designed to help the students learn about each other, their school, and their Link Leaders. The small group time will conclude with a brief general tour of the school, pointing out key locations such as the main office, cafeteria and main academic hallways. Students must attend this orientation to receive a copy of their class schedule prior to the first day of school. The school tour provided during the orientation will not allow the students to walk their individual schedules. Therefore, parents are invited to join their ninth grade student following the conclusion of the orientation program to walk through their class schedule in order to feel more comfortable with class locations prior to the first day of school. Doing this is highly recommended. A new addition this year will be a parent orientation in the HHS auditorium on the morning of the freshmen orientation hosted by HHS administration from 8AM to 9AM. This parent orientation is intended to provide useful information and tips to make your incoming freshmen successful. Stay tuned because Link Crew continues throughout the entire year with social and academic follow-ups between the Link Leaders and their crews. **NOTE** Ninth grade registration will be held on August 23 This is a separate event from orientation, but it is mandatory that students and parents attend. At registration parents and students can expect to turn in emergency cards, get school pictures taken, pay for school pictures, athletic passes, etc… German Day at U of M Congratulations to the following students for attending and placing in German Day at the University of Michigan. The Ore Creek Middle School forensics team finished the season with an outstanding finish at the MIFA Middle Level State Tournament held at Wayne State University on April 30. Eighth grade student Kendra Rocha won the State Championship in Extemporaneous Speaking! Extemp is considered by many to be the most difficult of all the public speaking categories because the student draws a current event topic of national or international importance and has 30 minutes to prepare a four to seven minute speech on that topic. The speaker must include her own analysis of the subject and also present evidence to support her position. Kendra will go on to compete in the National Junior Forensic League Tournament held in June in Dallas, Texas. Bree, Sarah & Kendra Sarah Portelli and Bree Rice, both 8th grade students at Ore Creek, represented Hartland in the interpretive categories of Poetry and Prose. These categories are very large and the competition was intense as students from 26 other middle schools from across the state vied for a top six placing. Earlier in April, the forensics team traveled to North Branch for another Middle School tournament. The team rallied to a 2nd place finish, which was amazing considering this, is only the first year of competition for these students. Two individuals were named category champions by earning perfect scores of 1-100% in each of the three rounds of competition. Those students were Kendra Rocha in Extemporaneous Speaking and Mason Cothran in Informative. Taking home 2nd place medals were Sarah Portelli in Extemporaneous Speaking and Kendra Rocha in Oratory. Katie Lohous earned a 3rd place medal in the category of Poetry. Honorable mentions went to Bree Rice in Prose and Sarah Portelli in Poetry. Community Life /June 2011/ 11 LEGACY News 810.626.2104 Kirk Evenson, Principal Hartland Community Education “Before & After School” Program Now taking Registrations for Fall 2011! Tori Avery, Cyndi Ernst, Trevor Thompson, Randy Pomeroy, Jake Turnage, Sue Silver LEGACY Community Service During the summer Michigan Works Program, Randy Pomeroy and LEGACY students built several benches and a picnic table to enhance the Community Education Building for the many people including senior citizens, preschool students, LEGACY students, college students and community members who enjoy use of the building. Recently Art Teacher, Mrs. Ernst, invited the preschool children to decorate a bench that will be sitting in their entry way with painted pastel hand prints. LEGACY students helped the children paint their hands and distribute the prints over the bench. This was a good time for LEGACY students to interact with the youngsters and the preschoolers and to work with a big brother or sister again for the hour. In December, they created holiday gingerbread houses together. During this summer Randy and the students look forward to creating more tables and benches for the district. Brooke Diener, Cheyenne Wright, April Militzer, Cody DeBruyn “Youth Appreciation Awards Night” Youth Appreciation Awards were presented to a number of Hartland students including, Hartland Legacy students, April Militzer 12thgrade, Cheyenne Wright 12th grade, Brooke Diener 11th grade, Destiny Oliver 10thgrade and Cody DeBruyn 9th grade on April 21. Selection was made using the following criteria: Outstanding community service, special achievement, good judgment, choices, perseverance, overcoming hardships, encouragement of others, loyalty and teamwork. The staff of Legacy is very proud of these students. They have shown a tremendous amount of personal growth since they came to Legacy. We look forward to their graduation as productive community members. Walk in Her Shoes Saturday April 16, at the Tanger Outlet Mall in Howell, a number of Hartland LEGACY students participated in the 6th annual “Walk-a-mile” to support LACASA. The walk is an International men’s march to stop rape, sexual assault, and gender violence. Walkers come as individuals or teams. They walk with families, spouses, co-workers, and friends. Some dress in uniform, team shirts, even dresses, but all wearing women’s shoes. Some walkers have participated annually and bring their own shoes, from high heeled patent leather boots, to fuzzy leopard print high heels, and some prefer the flat sandals making the walk a bit more safe. The students collected money and participated to help raise awareness of sexual violence, and help the survivors that turn to LACASA for help. Families and family pets came out for support and to cheer these walkers on. 33 Do you need childcare for your school age child? 33 Will your child need a Before or After school childcare program in the Fall? Also, thanks Carol & Danny Maczik from Spirit of Livingston, to Sandy and Mark Enderle for helping in the set up and tear down, to Denise Schneirs and Maryann Zurmuehlen who served as Bazaar Chairs and to our phenomenal student volunteers from Hartland High School. Unless you live on a lake, or next door to someone who generously shares their backyard pool, finding someplace to burn off some of the kids energy in the summer can be a challenge. Let’s do the math. If a family of four comes to the pool once a week for 13 weeks, the walk-in cost ($5 each) would be $260. A family membership costs $170, and you can come as often as you’d like. Open Swims are 6 days a week, Monday through Saturday, at 2:30-4:00pm and 7:30-9:00pm. Where else can you go where it’s always sunny, warm, safe and clean? Families with young children often bring the kids’ pajamas, and take them home freshly showered and worn-out-ready-for-bed. Membership includes the use of all facilities, during regularly scheduled hours, except for classes with an instructor. A study commissioned by VA in 2001 estimated, over the next 14 years, only about 30% of eligible veterans would apply for Pension. This is likely due to the fact that most veterans simply don’t know about it. In fact about a third of all seniors in this country, age 65 and older, could become eligible for pension under the right circumstances. That’s how many elderly war veterans or their surviving spouses there are. To receive Pension, a veteran must have served on active duty, at least 90 days, with at least one of those days during a period of war. There must be a discharge under conditions other than dishonorable. Single surviving spouses of such veterans are also eligible. If younger than 65, the veteran must be totally disabled. If age 65 and older, there is no requirement for disability. There is no age or disability requirement for a single surviving spouse. There are income requirements, but a special provision does allow household income to be reduced by 12 months worth of future medical expenses. Normally, income is only reduced by medical expenses incurred in the month of application. These allowable, annualized medical expenses are such things as insurance premiums, ongoing prescription drug costs, outof-pocket cost of monthly medical equipment rental, the cost of home care, the cost of paying adult children to provide care, the cost of adult day services, the cost of assisted living and the cost of a nursing home facility. These are all considered medical costs and they can be deducted from income to receive this benefit. The secret for receiving a successful award for aid and attendance or housebound ratings is not in filling out the form but in knowing what documents and evidence must be submitted with the application. Knowing the secrets for a successful award—with the special case of long term care recipients—is 95% of the battle. Even though the form is challenging, filling out and filing a claim is a formality. A knowledgeable consultant can provide information to shorten VA’s decision window of 6 to 12 months to possibly 3 or 4 months. The consultant also understands how to maximize the benefit or avoid a denial. The consultant can also provide guidance for meeting the asset test. Finally, the consultant can provide the actual strategies for reallocating assets and he or she can arrange for trusts or income conversions to allow for the best possible accommodation of assets for beneficiaries thus reducing taxes, family disputes and Medicaid penalties. We know Scouts had a great year and we would like to thank those who volunteered their time and effort to make Pack 385 an awesome experience for Scouts. Join us in the fall when we kick off another great year! On Monday May 2, Junior Girl Scout Grazia Curcuru, of Troop 41231 out of Charyl Stockwell Academy, hosted a workshop to benefit U-M Mott’s Children’s Hospital to earn her Bronze Award. The Girl Scouts attending were asked to bring books for the Book Cart at Mott’s Children’s Hospital, and while at the workshop, they made footprint cards for the babies in the NICU. Donations from Hartland Kroger and Susan’s Hallmark provided a snack and prizes for the girls who came out to participate in the benefit workshop.
