Filled with jokes and fun, the show uses magic and audience participation to show that no matter how old or young, you too can be a true hero. Come to the library and learn how to discover the hero in you! American Barn Stories May 6, 7:00 PM Photojournalist Tom Laughlin will present gorgeous slides of American barns and will share descriptions of his photographic gear and techniques. Brown Bag Story Lunches Fridays, June 19, 26, 11:30-Noon Bring a lunch and enjoy listening to a story! All ages are welcome! Ages 6 and under need a parent. Will be held outdoors if weather permits. Cupcake Wars! June 29, 3:00 PM Teens age 12 and up can compete to make the best ever cupcake! Based on the hit Food Network show, the Hartland Public Library’s Cupcake Wars will pit teams against one another to decorate the most outrageous, delicious, and beautiful cupcakes! Peer judging and our panel of esteemed judges (who have eaten many cupcakes in their time at the library) will determine the winners. Game on! Temples, Monks, and Motorcycles: the Allure of Southeast Asia May 14, 7:00 PM Join Gay Ruby as she shares tales and photos of her recent travels through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Page 2 MAY-JUNE, 2015 EVENTS Children’s Programs Get Ready for Summer Reading! 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Enjoy reading with your child! This selfdirected program is for children from birth Sign-Up for Summer Reading begins June 8. until they enter 5 year old kindergarten. The Walk-In, No-Registration Story Times for ages 2-5 will be held four 1000 Books Before Kindergarten App is days in May from 10:00 – 10:45 AM. Themes for each session are now live in the app store for both Apple and Android products. Reading together helps to as follows: encourage learning and promotes preWednesday, May 6 – “Squirrels” reading skills. Superhero Showdown! June 18, 3:00 PM Starring Puppet Story Theater’s Superhero Puppets and their audience of Super Readers, this showdown promises to be epic! Tune in for an exciting 45 minute game show of superpower quizzes, challenges, and stumpers. Make-It & Take-It Crafts June 15, 22, 29, 10:00 AM Have fun making crafts here at the library and then take them home to enjoy! Ms. Sue and Ms. Nancy will lead Make-It & Take-It. There will be a different craft project each week. Started the program on paper? Never fear! Stop by the reference desk and one of the friendly librarians will be happy to help catch the app up. Super Saturday Story Hour May 2, 16 9:30 AM Join us on the first and third Saturdays of each month for preschool story hour with the Hartland Lakeside School District and library staff! Story times are for children between 3 and 5 years old. Registration in advance is appreciated, but drop ins are always welcome! Super Saturday Story Hour will include a story as well as songs and crafts! Kids’ Superhero Movies - Mondays 2:00 PM This summer, we will have FREE family-friendly movies playing in our program room. Get your superhero fix! Free popcorn! June 15: “The Incredibles” (Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter: A family of superheroes must overcome their differences to stop an evil mastermind. PG) June 22: “Underdog” (Jason Lee, Peter Dinklage: A beagle uses his new powers to defend Capitol City from mad scientist Simon Barsinister. PG) July 6: “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl” (George Lopez, Taylor Lautner: A boy is shocked when the superheroes he dreamed up appear on Earth claiming they need his help. PG) July 20: Sky High” (Kurt Russell, Kelly Preston: The son of two famous superheroes has to find his inner strength at a school for super-powered teens. PG) July 27: “Big Hero 6” (Ryan Potter, Scott Adsit: A child prodigy and his plus-sized robot team up with friends to become heroes. June 16 - “Stringing the Story” June 23 - “Walking the Story” June 30 - “Acting the Story” Eyebombing Contest Begins June 29 Back by popular demand! Get your googly eyes from the library and show us what you’ve got! The funniest eyebomb wins a prize! Entries are due before the judging on July 13. Make us laugh! Teen Trivia June 18, 6:30 PM Can you name every Robin? Who were the founding members of the Avengers? Which superheroes are able to lift Thor’s hammer? Test your superhero knowledge at out teen trivia night! There will be prizes for the winners! Wednesday Teen Movies - 6:00 PM Come enjoy FREE movies in the library’s Program Room! Popcorn is provided; feel free to bring your own beverage. June 17: “Marvel’s The Avengers” (Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans: Earth’s mightiest heroes must join forces to prevent an alien invasion of New York. PG-13) June 24: “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” (Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead: Scott Pilgrim has met the girl of his dreams, but before they can be together he must defeat her seven evil exes. PG-13) July 1: “Warm Bodies” (Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer: A zombie begins to regain his humanity after rescuing a still-living girl. PG-13) July 8: “Pitch Perfect” (Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Rebel Wilson: College freshman Beca reluctantly joins an all-girl singing group and finds herself at odds with controlling team leader Aubrey. PG-13) Adult Programs Preserving Family Stories May 19, June 16, 6:30 – 8:00 PM Do you wish you knew more about your parents’ or grandparents’ lives? Will your grandchildren someday wonder what you were like when you were their age? If your answer is “yes” then you should be meeting monthly with this group who are writing family stories so they will be accessible years into the future. Wonderful writing skills are not the point; we write to preserve the essence of our lives and those of our families. Join us! Hartland History Our beautiful Hartland History room was donated to the library by the Hartland Historical Society and is available for research or quiet study at any time.
