Aquistore - Global CCS Institute
Aquistore Public Outreach

What is Aquistore?
• Aquistore is a research
and monitoring project
which intends to
demonstrate that storing
carbon dioxide (CO2) deep
underground, is a safe,
workable solution to
reduce greenhouse gases
(GHGs).
Aquistore will serve as the storage site for the world’s first commercial postcombustion CO2 capture, transportation, utilization, and storage project from a coal
fired electrical generating facility.
Project Location: Saskatchewan
• Saskatchewan has the
highest per capita CO2
emissions nearing 73
tonnes per person.
• Upwards of 70% of
Saskatchewan’s electricity
is generated by
combustion plants.

Project:
What have we done so far?
• Public/community
outreach.
• Site selection.
• Drilling of wells.
• Risk Assessment.
• Site installation.
• Baseline MMV.
• Water injection test.
Project:
Where are we now?
• Pipeline tie-in from
Boundary Dam.
• Injection (2014).
• Commercial and
monitoring phase.
• On going MMV.
• Public/community
engagement.
Public Outreach and Engagement
• Overview.
• Kitchen Table Discussions.
• Local Authorities and
Leaders.
• Open House.
• Community Reactions.
• What We Learned.
• What’s next?
• Wish List.
Overview
• Public outreach is critical to any CCS project. Even
where CCS awareness is high, many CCS projects –
successful and failed – have received negative
attention.
• Aquistore has enjoyed positive support in the local
community of Estevan.
• The project is committed to engaging with everyone
who has a stake in CCS: government agents, local
stakeholders, industry, research, and environmental
groups.
Kitchen Table Discussions
• Landowners near the
project.
• Informal and personal.
• Led to a greater
understanding of local
issues.
• Follow up consultation
and communication.
Local Authorities and Leaders
• Rural, city, provincial,
federal government.
• Presentations.
• Transparency.
• Recognition of support
and invitation.
• Engagement can lead to
ownership.
Open House
• Bring in project experts
to be accountable to
community.
• Heavily advertised.
• Designed to attract
large numbers – timing,
location, etc.
• Accessible, transparent.
Open House - Advertisement
•
•
•
•
•
Radio.
Electronic billboards.
Newspaper, articles.
Mail drop.
Contacts – schools,
business, SaskPower,
local leaders, etc.
• Follow up.
Stakeholder Reactions:
Kitchen Table
Questions:
• “Will seismic crews respect land/farms?”
• “What is the reason for carbon capture project?”
• “Does SaskPower have a market for their CO2?”
• “Is SaskPower stripping more than CO2 as a byproduct?”
Stakeholder Reactions:
Local Leaders
Questions:
• “Will there be a moratorium on oil wells around the
project area?”
• “Will monitoring include our private wells, if so when
and how often?”
• “What depth will be used for soil gas monitoring?”
• “How will this help/hurt our local economy?”
Stakeholder Reactions:
Open House
• “Not being involved in industry, explained a lot.”
• “We had concerns living close to Boundary Dam so
found this presentation day answered a lot of our
questions and concerns.”
• “Excellent visuals and extremely knowledgeable
personnel at display booths.”
• “Really enjoyed the formation and rock display.”
• “Will CCS impact my mineral rights??”
Stakeholder Reactions:
Open House
Surprises:
• Detailed explanation of
3D seismic survey for
CCS vs upstream
industry.
• Injection pressure,
pressure fronts, CO2
reaction in brine.
Common Questions:
• Underground
cavern/lake.
• Earthquakes.
• Explosive?
• What if it leaks?
What We Learned
• Value of FAQs.
• Face to face
consultation.
• Community – technical
knowledge.
• Danger of public
exhaustion.
• Too much information,
more questions.
What’s Next?
