Welcome to
Kristinehamn
BE M
OVE
D!
We are proud to present the gem Kristinehamn! Stroll along the charming street
Trädgårdsgatan that dates back to the 1600s and enjoy the waters of Lake Vänern.
Dotted with thousands of islands and skerries, it is Europe’s largest freshwater
archipelago. Here awaits adventure, to tempt both young and old, all year round.
A 50 year old will be celebrated between 13 May and 16 September this year:
Pablo Picasso’s first monumental sculpture “Jacqueline”. The area, with its lively
boat life, cafés, restaurants and waterfront promenade, is very popular and is
Kristinehamn’s most frequented.
Climb aboard a ferry that takes you from the town centre out to the archipelago.
You can also try island-hopping, go on a Picasso crossing on the historical vessel
Christine af Bro or take the ferry to the nearby town of Karlstad. If you are a more
active visitor and are interested in both culture and nature, you can walk along the
historical Iron Trail, with roots in the 15th century.
Three popular family activities are the Pirate Trip to find Captain One Eye’s
treasure, beating the water chute record at the Sannabadet public baths and
experiencing the thrill of a double go-cart at Värmland’s Go-cart Center.
Discover a town that ties together history with present times; a place where
famous people, such as Queen Kristina, the poet Gustav Fröding and the artist
Pablo Picasso, have made lasting impressions. Welcome!
A warm welcome to the Tourist Office in
Kristinehamn. We are open all year round.

Dinner with Picasso
The Picasso sculpture
is 50 years old
– let’s celebrate!
Södra Hamngatan 1
Join us in a unique food experience in 200 year old stables in the
centre of Kristinehamn.
Saturday 27 June 19.00 Inspired by Malaga, Picasso’s place of birth
in Spain, this evening has on offer everything from barbequed
meats to snacks, finger food and gazpacho.
Saturday 25 July 19.00 Picasso lived his last years in Mougins,
Provence, which is our source of inspiration for this evening. All
kinds of meat and fish dishes, flavoured with herbs such as basil,
fennel seeds, lavender, rosemary, sage, thyme and garlic, will be
served throughout the evening.
“Oui”
With three simple letters on a piece of paper Pablo Picasso
confirmed that he had chosen Kristinehamn for his 15 meter
tall monumental sculpture “Jacqueline”, in the series
“Les dames de Mougins” (The Ladies of Mougins). The sculpture was inaugurated in June 1965 and now, 50 years later,
Jacqueline still gazes out over Lake Vänern’s horizon. This
jubilee will, of course, be celebrated in and around Kristinehamn in many ways: the exhibition Picasso–Nesjar–Jacqueline
at The Kristinehamn Art Museum, celebrations at the peninsula
where Jacqueline stands, and much more. Welcome to
Kristinehamn in 2015, the summer of Picasso!
Picasso crossing
Take a round trip on Christine af Bro, Kristinehamn’s floating coat
of arms along the Vålösundet channel and admire the sculpture

Kristinehamn - a historical trading centre
Photo: Konsult Christina Skan
Kristinehamn was first known as Bro. It was a
trading centre and market place located around
the bridge that led the main road between
Sweden and Norway over the Varnan river. In the
1600s–1800s it was the most important port of
shipment for iron from the Bergslagen mining
region. In 1642 Bro was granted a town charter
by Queen Christina’s regency and the name of
Kristinehamn in her honour. At that time, about
200 people lived here. At the same time the town
was given a boeier in its coat of arms as a reminder of the importance of shipping. The vessels
known as boeiers were used to transport iron
across Lake Vänern to Gothenburg for further
transport overseas. Today Kristinehamn has a
population of approximately 24 000.
In the year 1633 Peter Flygge was appointed
customs officer at Bro market place. One of his
first tasks in serving the interests of the crown was
to set up a toll gate in the 2,453 m long fence that
he had built around Bro. It ran around the streets
known as Staketgatorna (the Fence Streets). The
toll gates were to the north and south, at the
ends of today’s street Kungsgatan. The gateposts
remained there until the end of the 1850s, when
they were moved to the newly built church. you
can see them in the church wall facing the street
Östra Staketgatan.
A historical walk with Mrs Nordenfeldt
in the Iron Town.
The market Fastingsmarknaden was relocated
from Karlstad to Kristinehamn in 1686. People
of authority, merchants, traders and mill owners
from far and wide added to the population of the
town for a few weeks every spring. Kristinehamn
became not only the centre for handling iron in
•6•
the county of Värmland but also the place where
the world market price of iron was fixed.
Kristinehamn is known locally as Lusasken, and
many people wonder why. So here’s the true
story. In the 18th century there was no poor-law
in Sweden, which meant that the state did not
help very poor people. In Kristinehamn this was
resolved by placing three money boxes around
the town. The money collected in one of them
went to the town’s sailors and their widows. This
particular box was emptied on December 13th,
which is Lucia Day in Sweden. It’s easy to imagine
how much this meant to the sailors who lost their
jobs when Lake Vänern froze over for the winter.
The sailors used to say, “Now we’re going back
home to Lusseasken”. Someone, at some time,
had jokingly said “Lusasken”, which stuck.
History can still be seen in Kristinehamn.
The “Lusseasken” money box can still be found at
Ölme Diversehandel & Kafè, which is now a museal general store and café. Drop a coin into the
box and support the local sea rescue service. The
market Fastingsmarknaden, which ceased in 1903,
is now a fun fair and street market. In the 1990s
a full-scale model of the town’s coat of arms was
built. The boeier, which was christened “Christine
af Bro”, now sails on Lake Vänern and is a popular
attraction in the summer in Kristinehamn.
If you are interested in the history of Kristinehamn
then was recommend a guided walk along the
Iron Trail or a historical walk with Mrs Nordenfeldt
in the Iron Town. On next page you find more
suggestions for outings and excursions.

Österviks kapell
Kristinehamn’s church was built in 1858. It has a
christening font from the 13th century carved out
of sandstone and a 14th century triumph crucifix.
The main entrance has a ramp for wheelchair
access. Guided tours can be booked at the parish
office (telephone number as above). The parish
of Kristinehamn has six churches. The Madonna
sculpture in Rudskoga´s church is from the end of
the 12th century, making it the oldest of its kind in
Värmland. The church in Visnum houses a triumphal crucifix from the 14th century and a picture of
St. Olof dating back to the 15th century.

Imagine the time when clocks were not
important, and there were neither conveyor belts
nor electrical cash registers. A time when flour was
not delivered to the store ready packaged and
sugar didn’t come in cubes; when ice
cream machines were not automatic and coffee
beans had to be ground manually. That time,
in the mid1800s and the hundred years that
followed, is still here. The old general store Ölme
diversehandel is a museum that takes you back
to the time you had almost forgotten about, or
maybe never experienced. There is everything
from football shoes to toys, porcelain to full
packets of cigarettes, and groceries such as flour,
cacao, washing powder, herbs, peas, coconut and
coffee, with their original contents and packaging.
You can, of course, shop in the store for gifts
including pretty serviettes, gifts, tins and baskets,
as well as linen goods and jackets. The café always
serves freshly brewed coffee and tea, sandwiches,
biscuits and cakes. From the outdoor seating area,
which has a view over the town, you can listen to
the soothing sound of Carl Nesjar’s fountain.

Historical places
The Rune Stone at Järsberg
The stone is one of the more mystical and difficult
to interpret. Some claim that by using the word
eril the engraver identifies himself as belonging
to the Herul folk group, whilst others doubt this.
It is possible that the top of the stone has been
broken off, so it may be that the word erilen is just
a reference. The stone has been dated to the 500s,
which is before the Viking era (800-1050 A.D.). A
bead of the same age has been found close to
the stone. Beads are usually associated with the
graves of women.

instigated an uprising against King Gustaf IV
Adolf when he occupied Karlstad and then
marched on to Stockholm. On his way to the
capital Adlersparre, then 49 years old, was invited
to Gustafsvik by Capten C.A. Linroth, where he fell
in love with the 24 year old daughter of the house.
Their wedding took place in 1809 and the couple
become the new owners of Gustafsvik. Their
fourth child, Rudolf, who was born in 1819, later
took over the manor. He also built a cemetery in
which the Adlersparre family grave is located. The
manor burnt down 1967. The manor park, wings
and burial grounds are still remaining.

Islands you can reach by ferry boat
Vålön Kristinehamn’s largest island On the island’s
eastern side is Sandvikarna, a popular place for families, with its shallow water and sandy beaches.
The islands of Vålön–Kalvön–Sibberön are connected by bridges and a 4 km long footpath. The path
passes small bays where you can bathe undisturbed whilst you admire the wonderful view over
Lake Vänern.
Kalvön Here there is lots of space to pitch a tent
and camp. There is a beach with large smooth
rocks next to the jetty if you don’t like getting
sand between your toes.
Sibberön An island with rocky beaches, sandy
beaches and woodland. The large grassy area by
the cabin is perfect for camping on. Take a rod
with you and try your luck fishing.
Saxholmen An island surrounded by myths, on
which archaeological excavations have been
carried out. There was a fort, or stronghold, here in
bygone times. Now only ruins remain.
Alvön The sunbathing island has flat, smooth
rocks that face the west. The eastern side of the
island, facing the channel leading to Svinön
island, is best.
Långön Find your own rock. Take a dip from the
island’s own little Riviera. Find your way to the
channel at Krakosundet and gaze out over
beautiful Lake Vänern.
Rävön The northern part of the island is unspoilt
and a popular bathing spot. The rocks on the
eastern side are somewhat flatter.
Hammarö At Lövnäs, on Hammarö, there is an
interesting museum of the archipelago and the
history of fishing in Lake Vänern.

ramp means it is very seldom affected by ice in the
winter, so it can be used almost all year round. Winter
trolling is very rewarding. Pike, perch and pike-perch
bite the best in the summer. Ramp fee: 65 SEK.

Between 16 May and 13 September the art
museum displays a jubilee exhibition of Pablo
Picasso and Carl Nesjar’s original work; paintings,
sketches, sculptures, photographs and models
showing the creation of “Jacqueline”, Picasso’s
first monumental sculpture. Focus is placed on
work that Picasso created in the 1950s and 1960s,
where his wife Jacqueline was the model.
With the help of video recordings from, for
example, Carl Nesjar’s own archives, we can see
the circumstances and sources of inspiration that
form the basis of Picasso’s intensive interest for
the subject group in question (which includes the
works “Woman by the sea” and “Woman’s head”)
as well as the friendship between Picasso and Nesjar. The curator of the exhibition is Bo Wingren,
who has previously been involved with the
exhibitions “Picasso in Public” (2003) and “The
Mattise Students” (2007). The exhibition includes
works borrowed from The Modern Museum in
Stockholm, The Picasso Museum in Paris, The
Lake Collection of Picasso Ceramics, The Museum
of Sketches in Lund and Carl Nesjar’s private
collection.

www.kristinehamnskonstmuseum.com
It all started by chance on a dusty country road in
France where Bengt Olson, an artist from Kristinehamn, met the Norwegian painter and photographer Carl Nesjar. Nesjar, who experimented
with decorative work in a new concrete-based
material, was in contact with Pablo Picasso.
Groups

”Why not in Scandinavia?” asked the Swede and
Norwegian, well aware of Picasso’s interest in
this peaceful part of the world. On his return to
Kristinehamn Bengt Olson presented the project
to the local county council. They, in turn, contacted Picasso and sent him pictures, recordings of
traditional folk music, etc. to illustrate the spirit
of Värmland.

The Picasso Sculpture – Jacqueline
Vålösundsvägen 161. Tel. +46 (0)550 881 87
Confirmation from Picasso, in the form of a deed
of gift, arrived shortly after; it was a photograph
showing a model of the sculpture in the Swedish
countryside. It was signed simply “Oui” (Yes)
Picasso, 7.7.1964. Work could then begin! The
sculpture was constructed by Carl Nesjar. Picasso
followed the whole process via films and photographs. The 15 m high sculpture was inaugurated
on Midsummer’s Eve 1965 by the Swedish poet
Bo Setterlind. The Picasso sculpture in Kristinehamn is one of Picasso’s biggest works of art. It
is Kristinehamn’s most famous “celebrity” and
the peninsula on which it is placed is the town’s
most frequently visited location. The road from
the town centre out to the peninsula follows the
shore of Lake Vänern, which is lined with jetties,
boats. Out here you can take a trip on one of the
many ferries that traffic the northern part of Lake
Vänern in the summer. A boat trip also means
that you can admire the sculpture from the water!

Carl Nesjar, who is one of Norway’s most famous
artists, was commissioned by Pablo Picasso to
build his monumental concrete sculpture in Kristinehamn’s archipelago in 1965. Nesjar is a versatile
artist. This particular Carl Nesjar fountain flows all
year round, so its appearance varies according to
the season. This stainless steel monumental creation is situated next to Ölme diversehandel & Kafé.

A Taste of Värmland... Värmland stretches over six or eight climate
zones, which is unique for a Swedish county. The variety of produce
embraces everything from the elk and cloudberries of the forests, the
salmon trout of the rivers and the cereals of the fields to the pike-perch
of Lake Vänern. Värmland is not only amazingly beautiful, it also smells
and tastes – thanks to our excellent produce and passionate food artisans. Delightful!

In Kristinehamn there are lots of opportunities to try locally-produced
foodstuffs. Proximity to Lake Vänern gives you the chance to try newlycaught pike-perch and the exclusive caviar vendace roe, whilst the
forests are full of game and mushrooms. There are several farm shops in
the area that sell their own produce, such as beef, lamb and game. In the
town centre local producers sell their delicacies, which include chocolate, ice cream, cheese and beer. Enjoy the unique environments of the
museal general store Ölme diversehandel, the interior design shop Lev
Vackert and the pottery Krukmakeri hemjord. The local monthly food
market is a great meeting place that provides a pleasant introduction to
Värmländ’s food culture. Local food trips are also organised throughout
the year. Don’t forget to visit Ölme Prästgård! Their restaurant is now
listed in the White Guide. Every year the White Guide tests and presents
the best restaurants in Sweden.
