It is already September, where did the summer go? I am sure you all have your grass skirts safely tucked
away for next year after our annual Luau in August. Thank you Linda Hudson and to our New Kitchen
Mgr. Carlos and our staff who did a great job! Thank you, Tommy Pruitt, for your assistance with recipes
and shopping advice. MAHALO!!!
September brings arguably the largest annual open house party for the club, that would be Jazz Cup! Also,
it is generally recognized as the last big race of the sailing season on the bay. Our Rear Commodore,
Frank Cavoto, leads the charge at our end working closely with South Beach Yacht Club who makes all
the arrangements for the race. Frank has found volunteers to manage all things that are race at our end.
BYC’s job is to set up the finishing line, set makers, and police those makers throughout the race. Room
arrangements have been made at our end for race officials to meet at the end of the race, listen to protests,
and ultimately identify the winners in all divisions. Included in that is naming the winner of the annual
challenge between Benicia YC and South Beach YC for the coveted Jazz Cup trophy. We are the defending
champion this year! Once you have your hands on that trophy it is hard to let go. Last year’s champion,
Captain Grant Harless and crew (Bay Loon), told me they will give it their all again this year. He also
knows stiff competition will also come from not just South Beach, but within our own ranks. For example,
Captain Noble Griswold and E-Ticket were only a hand full of seconds behind last year. This competitive Captain, a previous winner of the Jazz Cup, would like to get his name back on the trophy as well.
Remember, we are open to the public that day. Tell everybody about it. There will be food and music all
day. A great party at night. And upwards to a hundred beautiful sail boats coming into the marina that
day. Our club rocks on this event.
September is also the time of year when the BYC board elections start kicking into gear. By the time you
read this article, applications will have been received and interviews may have already been scheduled.
Still, it wouldn’t be too late to jump in. The water is fine. If you truly have a passion for the future of the
club and want to be a part of the decision making process for the good of the club, please throw your
hat in the ring. Representing the needs of our membership, watching finances, and managing the overall
quality of life at our club has its challenges. I can honestly say, knowing what we have worked through
this year, I would do it again. So do not be afraid to step up and join a group that keeps this ship afloat
and moving.
Reminder: Monday Night Football is back! September 12 is the first Monday Night Football game. Guest
Chefs are already signing up in the Norton Lounge. Just another great way to support the club. All proceeds are collected for the good of the club. The monies are designated for special purchases that are for
the betterment of the club and for things that are not in the line of sight with regards to the club’s general
funds. So, as you can, please support this season long event. Come down Monday nights and enjoy.

CRUISER’S REPORT
BYC Cruises to the Solano Yacht Club

Our BYC cruisers embarked for Suisun City the weekend of July 24th-26th.Our destination was the
Solano YC and the second phase of the two-part ‘Challenge of the Straits’ competition for 2015,
which took place on Saturday. One intrepid cruiser (Ken Hanley aboard Irish Port) left on
Wednesday to take advantage of favorable tides with the main flotilla arriving on Thursday and
Friday. Five boats arrived on Thursday…Absolutely, On a Whim, Moon Shadow, Bucket List, and
Zool Two (Tom and Barbara Cheddar former BYC members and our weekend guests). They now
live in Phoenix but their boat is berthed in Pittsburg. This was the inaugural cruise with BYC for
Bucket List owned by Fred and Susan Gibson, a delightfully fun couple. As is our cruising
custom, they were presented with a vintage wine “hand-selected’ by co-cruise director and BYC
sommelier Michael Rudy. Dinner that night was “on your own” but was preempted by ‘informal’
pot luck at SYC Paul and Becky Carroll’s house near the yacht club. Great food, great friends,
plenty to drink and lots of fun!
On Friday the rest of the cruisers arrived….No Compromise, Delfini, Toucan Do It and Getaway.
Ten boats in all had arrived without a single mishap EXCEPT for one boat that went somewhat
astray of the preferred channel and hit bottom in the old Suisun Slough, this boat may be the
winner of the Christopher Columbus award this year! The preferred route to SYC is via
Montezuma Slough. We won’t mention the name of the captain of that vessel to protect his
identity. That evening the 6th annual

wonderful adult beverages and good
companionship! On Saturday the

the hilarious toilet paper/plunger

bag toss, raw egg throw, and a frozen
tee shirt contest - which Janet Booth

and gave there all – they were first and second.
Two weeks prior BYC had won the 1st part of the competition at our yacht club, Benicia 310 pts to
240 pts. The Solano YC won this Saturday’s competition 370 pts to 300 pts, but our BIG win in
Benicia enabled us to win the overall competition and return the trophy to its ‘rightful’ place at
BYC once again. Solano has won the competition only once (last year) and the overall record now
stands at BYC -5, Solano -1.

Our group dinner that night was at the Ironwood American Bistro, a new dinner venue in Suisun
City with quite nice food. The proprietor allowed the 48 of us to take over the place. The evening
culminated with some aggressive betting on a horse race staged by SYC. On Sunday morning we
had our annual ‘Bon Voyage’ Champagne Brunch on outside patio at the Cast Iron Grill. We had a
great breakfast fare with plenty of free flowing champagne, if you chose to partake. We enjoyed the
camaraderie of each other and with numerous Solano YC members, including their commodore
and her husband.
Most boats departed for Benicia that afternoon and by all reports there were no incidents on the
way home. Everyone took the preferred Montezuma Slough route. We are looking forward once
again to next year and a wonderful cruise to Suisun City. We must stress again that it is not that
difficult to navigate to Suisun, it is an interesting ride through the slough and when working with
the tide, no problem!

Summer Cruise is finally here!!!!
Rear Commodore Frank Cavoto, along with assistance from Lee Ritchey and
Merle Kleinschmidt made for a great event. Pittsburg Yacht Club is our usual
first stop for Summer Cruise. This year many of our cruisers were already in
the Delta and chose not to travel downriver. However, a group of Land
Cruisers did join the Pittsburg members for a great dinner.
Cruisers converged on Grindstone Joe’s (near Tower Park) on Monday. After
all were settled in (several times) we had a welcoming party. Merle called for
a planning meeting to discuss the path forward. Afterward, some cruisers
went to Rosa’s for dinner while others just hung out. Hanging out for Don
Murray means jumping into the water to save his dog Roxy. She
inadvertently took a green layer of algae for green grass. Both survived.
There must be an award for that.
Tuesday started with several dinghies and jet boats going to Korth’s for
breakfast. Some of us stayed back to meet with Curt of West Coast Canvas to
spend more money. Fortunately, they are only boat bucks. Late afternoon
brought a wine tasting. They were all winners, Merle fired up the BBQ grill
for those inclined to grill something. As is BYC tradition almost everyone
grilled beef.
Alice J started Wednesday off by chasing a couple raccoons off their boat.
The dinghy, jet ski and whaler fleet departed late morning for lunch at
Giusties in Walnut Grove. The Gillilands were able to join the group in their
speedy boat. After lunch, they joined us back at Grindstone’ for Kleinschmidt
Pain Killers. Yummmm.
A late start Thursday. The dinghy fleet went to Wimpy’s for lunch. Others
went touring, wake boarding, napping etc. Early evening beverage tasting
and snacking on leftovers closed out the evening.
Friday was departure day. Karma and Jorad Too headed home while the rest
of us caravanned to Mildred Island. We rested until it was time to dinghy to
Discovery Bay Yacht Club for dinner. Besides treating us like royalty they
were having a special dinner of steak and salmon. Food was fabulous.
Lunch time Saturday found us at Union Point for some fine Delta cooking.
After resting up the group reconvened for a Farewell Party hosted by the
Kleinschmidts. We needed to use up all the food and beverages accumulated
during the trip.
Sunday was again departure day for most.
Once again we had a fabulous time thanks to the planning team (Frank, Lee
and Merle) with special thanks to Merle for taking on the on-site Cruise
Director responsibilities. I can’t wait for next year!!!!! Ken Oxman, Fleet

SAILING STORIES
Sea Stories; Pacific Cup 2016
There's a reason they're called sea
stories.
Apart from the apparent
alliteration, sea story simply sounds
better than sea-pictures, sea-video, or
sea-mixed-media-presentation.
Perhaps sea-show has some of the
same lilting rhyme, but in the end, it is
impossible to show the experience to
those who exist solely on terra Þrma
or merely dabble in protected waters.
That is, unless, one is willing to
abscond with a neophyte out onto the
deep and restless sea.
Pictures and ßashy videos trick our
foolish eyes, but a well-told story sets
our minds aÞre with imagination and
parades images more vivid, more real,
than any mere photograph. Waves are
larger, winds more menacing, sunsets
more vivid, acts more meaningful, and
feelings more real to those enraptured
within the tale.
Thus we Þnd ourselves in the midst
of one particular story of Þve sailors
attempting to cross the largest ocean
on Earth.
The Farallones slid away past the
horizon; sinking into the rough waters
far from the small boat sailing west.
Maintop Island was the last to go as all
Þve souls on board quietly wrestled
with the same thought; we're now in
unknown waters. It scarcely mattered
that hundreds, likely tens of
thousands, had gone this way before.

resources; it all seemed far too little as
the world shrunk down to one boat on
a disc of angry and utterly empty sea

it was their Þrst time alone, far out to
sea, beyond waters they knew.
Their minds, already beset by the
steep and confused sea, began to
realize this was no quick trip around
the rocks. As the sun began to set, seasickness took its toll.
Stalwart sailors one and all, they
were laid low. Only the skipper, spared
the worst of it, struggled to pilot the
small boat alone through the dark and
howling wind; the motion of the waves
as violent and uncontrollable as the
painful spasms that wracked the
sailors’ bodies. The crew huddled
below in the indescribable misery of
completely debilitating sea sickness,
having already emptied their stomachs
over the gunwales in a futile offering to
the angry sea. They had nothing left to
give but dry gagging and pleading
sounds of suffering.
The sea would demand more.

Youth Sailing
Volunteers Saved the daze….
During the weeks preceding Youth Sailing’s
August camp I had to turn away about ten
children who wanted to Learn to Sail. It is so
hard to turn them away, though, for safety
reasons and without enough sailing vessels to
put them on, we could not possibly
accommodate the requests.
Even though we turned away so many people
we were filled to ultimate capacity. We were
offering two camps which turned into three
different levels of skill, our instructors did a
great job helping the children move forward
with their skill levels. We could not have done
this without the volunteers who showed up to
help us during that week. A HUGE Thank You
to Ken Vanstory, Tim Rose, John Dillow, Mark
Hurdle, Bob Hall, Pete Adams, Mia Sloane, Jack
Sutter, Fred Gibson, Joan Westerman, Joe
Marra, Curt Sutter, all of whose help on the
water was instrumental in keeping the kids
safe, engaged, learning and having fun. Merle
and Cheryl, you’re so generous and supportive
toward YS year after year, thank you for the
dock space on Dock A and all the
encouragement that you give to YS over the
years. A giant Thank you to Jackie Ramos and
Linda Hudson who helped YS with the on land
help this year, thank you ladies.
We hosted a TRUE Intermediate skill level
training on the Strait with the help of Mark
Hurdle, Jack Sutter and Certified Instructors
Tim Rose and John Dillow. Mark was sailor and
later a coach at UC Monterey Bay. He loves to
drill the students with on the water skills that
improve them on them mechanically and
physically as well the kids gaining mental
confidence. We had three students who have
been returning to BYC YS for years to get to this
level. Among them were Jacob Knott, Nate

Ashton Amaro and Ciara
made up a Beginner
Intermediate group, learning two handed boat
handling on the DeWitt Dinghies. Some of these
students were qualified to sail as Intermediates
though didn’t have enough weight to move onto
the Strait on the 420’s. Needless to say, they
had a great time racing and sailing together as
teams on the DeWitts.
Ciara Cirla, who lives in Northern Italy also
acted as a translator between her two cousins,
also from Italy, and the instructors. She took
each cousin out solo on the DeWitt dinghie and
helped them through the basics of learning to
sail… Future Bi-Lingual Instructor? I’d say so!

the Learn to Sail group. Everyone was
successful and excelled on the Vanguard Opti’s,
some even trying out the DeWitts with the other
students.
The YS volunteers are all excited and thankful
to be moving forward with the 501c3. Thank
you to Scott Reep for his tireless effort setting
this up for us…. Thank you Law firm of Gizzi
and Reep for helping us out once again.
With the status of the 501c3 YS we can
hopefully gain new resources in our fundraising
efforts. We have missed out over the years on
monies that were only given to those with a
non-profit status.

If you have gotten this far into the article you
have read that there are jobs for everyone in
YS, you need not be a sailor, only willing to give
us a bit of your time.

Our hopes are to be able to hire enough
instructors and have enough equipment so that
we can teach everyone that wants to Learn to
Sail in the future. Hopefully we’ll never have to
turn away another student!
Mark is interested in helping us to get the high
school going on building a team to race in the
NorCal PCISA. We as a group have had great
intentions to do so, but limited time amongst
