This year, we will initiate a multi-generational program, with the help of our COSY chapter, that will combine discussion, food, and a Havdallah service to get us in a proper frame of mind for the upcoming holidays. Stayed tuned for more details! Please join us on Saturday, September 20th from 8:00PM-9:30PM for “Selichot Sicha” (“Sicha” is the Hebrew word for conversation) The 4th annual Jews, Brews N Ques Kosher Grill-Off SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26TH ! Tickets on sale now! Mazel Tov to Katie Krawcheck and family on her upcoming Bat Mitzvah on September 13, 2014 2 F R O M T H E D E S K O F R A B B I R O S E N BAU M What happens when a longstanding tradition becomes tired and worn? Is it best to renew and change it, or to leave it behind altogether? Take, for example, Selichot. It is, traditionally, an hour-long service held at midnight on the Saturday before Rosh Hashanah (or, in some years, the Saturday prior to 5 Windsor Drive Charleston, SC 29407 that). This service usually contains numerous psalms and readings appropriate to get us Phone: (843) 571-3264 in a proper frame of mind before the High Holy Days begin. Selichot used to be a fairly Fax: (843) 402-0844 popular service in years past, but in resent years, attendance for this service in ConservaEmail: tive synagogues has plummeted; our synagogue has been no exception. Maybe it’s beemanu-el@emanu-el.com cause fewer people want to stay out that late, even on a Saturday night, or maybe it’s beWebsite: cause many people feel that the High Holy Days services themselves are enough to bring www.emanu-el.com them the spiritual guidance they desire. Whatever the case, it became clear that Selichot Rabbi needs to be re-examined. Adam J. Rosenbaum So last year, I asked a number of rabbinic colleagues how they handle Selichot in Religious School Principal their respective congregations, to see if they had any words of advice. I only received one & Ritual Assistant response, and it essentially said that Selichot is a “dinosaur” and we’d be better off Daphne Hubara disposing of the ritual altogether. Executive Director Ruthie Simmons With all due respect to my colleague, I’m not ready for Selichot to go extinct. The content of the High Holy Day services is important in its own right, but when we President Stanley Chepenik devote some time to examine ourselves and evaluate our behavior and decisions over the President Elect past year, the services become so much meaningful. We need to prepare ourselves for Jacobo Mintzer these days, and Selichot can be an effective vehicle for such preparation. 1st Vice President So, we’ll still do Selichot this year — but we’re changing the format. Radically. Laura Zucker Instead of midnight, we’ll gather at 8:00PM, and be done around 9:30PM. 2nd Vice President Marsha Gewirtzman Instead of having a service filled with liturgy from the High Holy Days, the main Treasurer ritual will be a communal Havdalah service (though we will include a couple of songs Michael Schwartz appropriate for the time of year, as well as the sounding of the shofar). Financial Secretary Instead of making the evening about the service, it will focus on an interactive Suzanne Lynch discussion. This discussion will be planned by members of COSY, our USY chapter, and Recording Secretary Linda Krawcheck will be appropriate for all age groups. We anticipate that this will be a multi-generational Corresponding Secretary program and, perhaps, build bridges between members of all ages. Joan Feldman We’re calling the program “Selichot Sicha”. “Sicha” is a Hebrew word for Parliamentarian “conversation.” The title of the program is not accidental. When we attend Rosh Lydia Mandel Hashanah and Yom Kippur services, we are expected to minimize personal Past President Ellen S. Steinberg conversation, and for good reason. But the downside is not having the chance to talk with one another about the topics and issues raised by the services’ liturgy, teachings, and Board of Trustees rituals. A program like “Selichot Sicha” will give you that chance. Alex Fox Elisheva Holub There are so many thoughts and emotions that swirl in our minds during these Rachel Landis holiest of days. Before we enter the days, let us take the time to talk about them. I hope Scott LeRoy you join us for our inaugural “Selichot Sicha”. Together, let us renew an ancient ritual Norm Levine and renew our connections with one another. Cynthia Nirenblatt Michael Mills Scott Sternfeld Gregory Yarus Sisterhood President Linda Krawcheck Men’s Club President Charles Richards Welcome our newest Synagogue Members Mr. Ross Berman Mr. & Mrs. Brian Hellman and family Mr. & Mrs. Alex & Adina Gross and family Mr. & Mrs. Peter & Deborah Lucash 3 P R E S I D E N T – S TA N L E Y C H E P E N I K It’s that time of year again. Time for the personal “rededication and renewal” that Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur afford us. These holidays are a time to consider the past year and contemplate how we, as individuals and a community, can make the future better. Our synagogue leadership works hard to make a difference for our Emanu-El community. We continue to work toward a strategic plan for the future that will chart a path for the years to come. We’ve heard your concerns and have sought to implement some of your ideas before we have a final plan. You stressed that you wanted music with instruments in our service, and we developed a plan to introduce this on Friday nights starting in September. You wanted a revision to the religious school structure that would change both the days of attendance as well as the curriculum. This has been done. It may need tweaking in the future, but the change has been made. We continue to listen to you and, hopefully, will implement the changes that will make our community stronger in the future. One thing I’d very much like to see this year is 100% participation by our congregation in the annual Kol Nidre appeal. Complete participation by all of you would be a singular achievement and would speak volumes about our congregational commitment to our synagogue. What you can give is up to you. I ask only that you pledge some amount, an amount you are comfortable with. It’s simply a truism that money is the engine that powers the synagogue. We can have the best programs, staff, and services, but if we can’t pay the bills we will cease to exist as an organization. Our financial outlook is pretty fair for this coming year. The only way we can keep it that way is through your support and commitment. Fundraising is always a priority so we can keep moving forward. This is my second year as President and I must admit it’s been Fun (capital F intended) as well as a challenge. We have some wonderful programs planned that should appeal to all. We listen to you and you are not shy about sharing your opinions. We couldn’t keep moving forward without all of you. So please keep it up! L’shana Tova and Hag Semeach to all of you. May every one of us be sealed in the Book of Life. Please join us at our semi-annual Congregational Meeting Sunday October 12th at 10:00AM Learn about the most current synagogue events and welcome our newest members in what we hope will evolve to be a beautiful new tradition… We hope to see you there! From dues renewal to High Holy Day Greetings, Floral Book entries, to Apples & Honey, Sisterhood has been busy. It is so important to return all these requests as soon as possible, especially the Floral Book forms; it is a large job to produce the book. The Apples & Honey Bags are a deal and a half! Wow! Send sweet New Year Greetings, and they will be hand-delivered by Sisterhood to anyone in the Tri-County area. Sisterhood had a morning of gleaning at Limehouse Farms on August 4th (a rainy day!) It was joint event with Men’s Club, and I am happy to say we sent more than 600 pounds of fresh vegetables to the Kosher Food Pantry. It is so satisfying to be able to help others; please consider joining in on our next gleaning adventure. Watch for upcoming dates! Book Club was held at the home of Evelyn Needle on August 20th, and we discussed The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. The next Book Club will be September 17th at the home of Gloria Adelson, and we will be reading Guide for the Perplexed by Dara Horn. Pick up the book and come along; there is always a lively discussion. Sisterhood and Men’s Club will host our Paid-Up Membership Brunch on Sunday, September 14th. It is free to all paid up members. Remember you can also pay your dues at the brunch. Men’s Club members will be cooking breakfast. The speaker will be, Abby LeRoy, who has most recently returned from Israel and will speak on the conditions of the State. The High Holy Days are coming up; it’s a time for us to reflect on the past year and gain hope for a more promising new year, renewed strength and inner peace so we may go forward energized and able to accomplish our goals. I wish everyone a wonderful New Year and an easy fast. May there be peace for Israel. Drawing for the Men’s Club President parking space will take place during the brunch. A donation of $1 per ticket will give you a chance to have a reserved parking space to use during the High Holy Days. We will continue to support Sisterhood with their gleaning of crops. This important community service project provides food to many needy individuals. Be prepared for a busy October. On October 5th, we will build our Sukkah along with members of YAD. This will be followed by Beer & Burgers in the Sukkah on October 14th with our friends from the KKBE Brotherhood. However, all this traveling doesn’t keep COSY apart for very long! COSY members hosted their kick-off event of the year: Olaf the Polar Bear’s 2nd birthday! We celebrated the occasion, and afterward, many USY’ers attended the rally for Israel. This event was just the beginning of an amazingly awesome year with COSY. Just go to the Synagogue’s home page. Click on the link to the library and follow the directions. Do you know the library has an extensive collection of fiction? Do you want to find a recipe like your Bubbe used to make? Check out our collection of cookbooks. Are you trying to find information on the way things were when your family emigrated? Does your child need to do research for a paper? Our library has many hidden treasures just waiting to be discovered. We have kept busy this summer cataloging donated books we have received from many different congregants. While we welcome donations, we can only accept one copy of a given book due to space constraints. All books must have Jewish content - not just a Jewish author. So, unfortunately we have not been able to accept all the books offered to us. Duplicate books are either returned to the donor or placed on the cart in the lobby for others to take. Most of the donations have been to the adult library. We really could use more donation of gently used preschool, easy reader and juvenile books. Please leave any donated books in the Synagogue office-not in the library. Since taking over the library with the help of Joan Feldman and Sandra Grauer, my biggest challenge has been to get my work done when all I really want to do is sit in one of our comfortable chairs and read a book - or two or three!
