E
ighty-two Air Cadets from across the province were
flying high Friday afternoon at CFD Mountain View.
In an impressive ceremony in a new hangar at the
Prince Edward County airfield, these cadets celebrated
the end of their six-week course by receiving their glider
pilot wings in front of family and friends.
Brigadier-General J.G.E. Tremblay, the Commandant
of the Royal Military College of Canada and the Reviewing Officer for the parade, said the dedication and hard
work of the cadets will ensure a vibrant future for the program.
“The Air Cadet League of Canada deserves our grati-
tude,” he said. “Our League partners work hand-in-hand
with the Canadian Forces (CF) in provision of the Air
Cadet program. The team work exhibited by that partnership produces some outstanding young citizens, for our
country and many of them are standing before us today.”
Brig.-Gen. Tremblay also noted 8 Wing Trenton deserved
credit for its contribution to the Air Cadet program.
“8 Wing Trenton has consistently provided amazing
support for cadet operations, whether with this new hangar to house our flying operations or on base where over
700 other air cadets are currently being trained, housed
and fed. Without 8 Wing’s support and involvement, we
could not accomplish our mission.”

Service’s “Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting”
(ARFF) simulator, a state-of-the-art training
facility that provides realistic scenario for
Wing Firefighters to keep themselves welltrained and always ready to respond to emergency situations in their area of responsibility.
“The ARFF is an aircraft mock-up designed
for aircraft approach, entry and tactics training on the airfield,” said Lieutenant (Lt.) Robert Sloan, the new Wing Fire Chief. “We use
it to recreate a series of different emergency
scenarios, including interior and exterior

T
he wings presented to the cadets on
the Army Cadet Basic Parachutist
Course graduation parade Friday are
not a cadet badge, but a Canadian Forces
qualification. So it was easy for the cadets to follow Lieutenant Colonel David
Wright’s instructions and bask in the
glow of their achievements.
And as they received that punch on the
shoulder from their instructors as the
wings were presented, there was a special
look of respect which passed between the
instructor and the pupil.
No other cadet course can produce that
kind of pride and camaraderie.
“Should any of these cadets choose to
enrol in the Canadian Forces (CF), this
qualification and the right to wear that
badge will follow them,” Lt.-Col. Wright,
Commanding Officer of the Cadet Summer Training Centre, said. “For those
who choose to pursue other careers, the
skills and foundations that were learned
here today will continue to serve them
well. No matter what you choose to do
in life, if you pursue it with the same
energy, the same zeal, the same passion
and the same desire you’ve demonstrated
here, you’ll undoubtedly be successful.”

Two very large and curious visitors, travelling west along the
shore line, came across CFS Alert on Aug. 13. After a short
visit and a little persuasion by the Station Warrant Office,
MWO Curtis, they continued on their way. This was a very
rare and spectacular spotting for the personnel in CFS Alert.

Flight Engineer Training redefined
Avionics Technicians become Flight Engineers for the first time

F
light Engineers have always served an important
role as part of an airplane’s crew. Recent changes
have resulted in two new milestones being achieved.
Not only has flight engineering training evolved, but
also the source of new flight engineers has changed.
These milestones were recently celebrated on June 21
when 13 Flight Engineers graduated from 10 weeks of
training conducted by 426 Transport Training Squadron (426 Sqn).
“Graduating the newest Flight Engineers in the
RCAF was a great honour,” noted Lieutenant-Colonel
Christian Roy, former Commanding Officer of 426 Sqn
and now 8 Wing Operations Officer. “The breadth of
backgrounds between AVN and AVS Techs will help the
trade grow and evolve, just like the aircraft on which
they will serve as aircrew.”
The need for a flight engineer position evolved as
multi-engine aircraft were created. The larger, more
complicated cockpits required an additional crew member to aid the pilots and co-pilots. Flight engineers were
a key component of aircrews during the Second World
War and beyond. Flight engineers monitor the systems
of the aircraft while the pilots control flight.
The source of Flight Engineer candidates used to be
strictly limited to members of the Aviation Technician
(AVN Tech) trade. The traditional rationale for this limitation was based on the mechanical systems of aircraft.
AVN Techs worked on mechanics, and since older aircraft were predominantly mechanical systems, it made
sense that Flight Engineers would be drawn from the
AVN Tech trade.
Aircraft design, however, has evolved with time; systems and aircraft are more electronic in nature. The decision to include Avionics Technicians for consideration
as Flight Engineer candidates, while a radical departure
from the past, was part of a process that began in 2011,
which culminated with the rewriting of the Flight Engineer course by a board of experts that included current
and former Flight Engineers as well subject matter experts in technical and meteorological areas.
“The new course has provided me with the essential
tools to complete future training as a Flight Engineer,”
said Cpl. Andrew Lewis, former AVS Technician.
AVN and AVS Technicians interested in becoming
Flight Engineers apply for a Volunteer Occupational
Transfer. The candidates for this course came from all
across Canada. Flight engineer candidates undergo five
distinct areas of instruction and qualification as part of
their training. This first course was conducted over a
period of 10 weeks and the syllabus touched every aspect of flight operations from engine theory lectures to
human performance. Training is not limited to classroom work on the
ground; in-flight training is also part of the course.
The training given at 426 Sqn reflects this reality and
candidates are now required to learn about instrument
approaches, air weapons, weight and balance, meteorology, workplace safety and survival before graduating
from this course.
A Flight Engineer could work on any aircraft in the
RCAF fleet, from tactical helicopters (such as the CH-146
Griffon) to multi-engine transport aircraft (such as the
CC-130H Hercules and CP-140 Aurora). While on course,
the candidates received their first posting messages as
Flight Engineers, learning they would be posted all over
the country to work in various capacities such as Special Operations, Tactical Transport, Search and Rescue
and Anti-Submarine Warfare.

the availability of gambling has increased, there is concern that the problem may be
more widespread than this.

hether it’s a simple step stool, or one which soars to
many feet above the ground, ladders help you reach
heights you never thought you could. There’s far more to
safe ladder use than having a sturdy ladder and lots of physical agility. Many people are seriously injured by falling from
ladders, whether from close to the ground or higher up.
By following some simple safety procedures, you can ensure that you successfully climb a ladder to your destination...without experiencing a fatal ‘downer’!
Choose the right ladder for the job. They range from very
short step ladders to extension ladders which must be well
supported. They are made of various materials such as fiberglass, aluminum or wood.
Examine your ladder before you use it. You do not want
to use one which is defective or in need of repair...it could
mean injury to you!
The rungs, siderails and locking spreaders should all be
sturdy and in good condition. Oil the spreaders on a regular
basis to keep them working smoothly. Do not paint ladders.
Cracks and splits may be hidden under the paint and the
paint itself may provide a slippery surface.
Instead of painting a ladder to protect it, try double-coating it with two coats of clear wood preservative such as shellac, varnish or linseed oil.
The steps or rungs should be solid and non-slip.
Aluminum ladders should not be bent out of shape. Make
sure the ladders are free of grease, clean and dry.
Do not use aluminum ladders when working on or near
electricity, even if all you are doing is changing a light bulb.
Aluminum acts as a conductor for the electricity and you
could be seriously injured.
How you set up your ladder is important. The area where
you are working should be clean, and people should be
warned to stay away. The ladder should not be placed on an
unstable foundation but rather on a solid, flat surface. Position it so that you can easily reach your work.
Stepladders should be fully opened before climbing. Extension ladders should be used with a one-to-four lean ratio. This means that for every four feet of height, the ladder
should extend from the supporting wall by one foot.
All ladders should be firmly secured to prevent ‘kick-out’
when being used.
When you climb your ladder, have both hands free for
climbing. Carry your tools up in a tool belt or placed in a
bucket that can be hoisted as you climb.
Work smoothly on the ladder, avoiding sudden movements.
If you cannot reach without your upper body going beyond
the siderails...don’t do it!
It’s not a good idea to work on a ladder outside in bad
weather. You could be put at risk by wind, blinded or faced
with slippery conditions by rain or snow.
If you are feeling tired, dizzy, or are under the influence
of drugs or alcohol, you should not be climbing a ladder. Not
only is your judgment impaired, but also your physical agility and sense of balance.
For obvious safety reasons, only one person at a time
should work on a ladder.
When you are finished using your ladder, put it away in a
safe, clean area where small children cannot play on it.
When you are up on a ladder, you should also be up on
safety. Take the right steps to ensure that you climb with
confidence!

own doubts, fight at times through pain and tiredness, and
learn quickly and methodically the drills that ensure safety during the flight while in the air and during landing.”
Brig.-Gen. Tremblay advised the new jumpers to take
careful stock of their new talents and traits.
“You have demonstrated what it takes to be a jumper; be
proud but humble,” he said. “ Your life has just discovered
some new perspectives. Enjoy the altitude, but remain
grounded.”
Mr. Don McCumber, President of the Army Cadet League
of Canada (Ontario), also noted the course had been difficult but that these graduating cadets had met the challenge head-on.
“In looking back, you have to be proud of yourself and
your fellow cadets who have accomplished your goals and
your mission. I know you will wear your wings proudly for
a job well done!” ne noted.

“To get here, these cadets had to stand out from their
peers, they needed to excel, they needed to demonstrate
their physical ability, their motivation and their determination,” he said. “They were the few, but just getting here
was not enough. There was no guarantee they would be
successful and no assurance they would be standing here
before us on parade today.
“A small, cloth badge may not seem like something to get
worked up about, but these jump points presented today
represent a truly significant achievement, an achievement
that requires drive and perseverance, one that requires
self-discipline, requires strength, stamina, focus and concentration.”
With those badges, Lt.-Col Wright reminded the cadets
they were now part of a shared brotherhood of military
parachutists around the world, a brotherhood formed by
shared experience, shared hardships, shared commitments and shared dedication.
“Conduct yourselves accordingly and hold yourselves to
those same high standards in all aspects of your lives,” he
said.

The three cadets winning the special awards will
have the privilege to further their flying skills as they
will be treated to a week of Advanced Soaring Techniques at York Soraing.
All of the cadets have worked extremely hard over
the past six weeks battling the heat and the academic
stress of the course.
Although the summer scholarship program is complete, cadets who return home will have the opportunity to continue their flying at their regional gliding
centre in Borden, Chatham, Iroquois Falls, Markham,
Mountain View, North Bay, Welland and Wingham.
Through these centres operated in the spring and fall,
they can begin to build time and eventually qualify to
take passengers in the Schweitzer-233A glider.

elleville’s Bryan Cuerrier captured the Ontario Provincial
title in the Martin 16 Class Silver Fleet this past weekend at
a hard fought regatta in Hamilton. Teammate Claire Adams of
Brighton took third place.
In his first appearance in the Gold Fleet, veteran racer Brett Lyons of Frankford tied for third position but was awarded fourth on
points. Brett, 16, was also the youngest sailor in the competition.
All three sailors represented Quinte SailAbility at the regatta
held at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club. Quinte SailAbility operates from the CFB Trenton Yacht Club.
Next up for these sailors is Mobility Cup, an international regatta being held this year in Ottawa.
