A former Vocalist, Guitarist from a Top Forty show group, he sings all of the Classics and Modern songs created for the Baby Boomers. Page 3 August Activities & Programs New AACC Fall Classes: Registration begins August 2 Touchstones Discussions Wednesday 1:30 to 3:30 Class participants read brief passages from the Western tradition, i.e., Homer, Francis Bacon among others, and collaborate as creative thinkers in a guided discussion. No pre-reading or research needed. German Espionage in the US in WW II Wednesday 1 to 3 Examine German espionage and sabotage in the US in World War II and how diplomats, spies and bomb makers worked to keep American munitions from the Allies and to keep America out of war. The Founding Fathers and the Constitution Monday 10 to 12 This course will examine the events that led up the convening of the Constitutional Convention in 1787 and then discuss the lives, personalities and the influences on, and of, certain of the Founding Fathers who were key to the successful writing of the Constitution of the United States. The History of Secrecy and Deception Monday 1 to 3 Explore the history of secrecy and deception used by the military in past conflicts. Topics include case studies from the Civil War, Boer War, World War I, Vietnam, Cold War and the Middle East Wars. Moving with the Masters Friday 2:15 to 3:15 Moving with the Masters is a program of ballet exercises set to the music of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Shubert and others. It has been shown that listening to the classics is good for your brain; moving to the classics is good for your body. The exercises will increase balance, flexibility, strength and vitality. No experience is necessary. Music of the Civil War Thursday 9:30 to 11:30 Discuss and evaluate the importance of songs during the Civil War and the historical impact that they left on American history. Students will listen to the various war songs of the Civil War from the Union and Confederate sides and evaluated the meanings of these songs and the impact that these songs had on the Civil War soldiers and society. KARAOKE WITH JIM BARTLEY Wednesday, August 24 12:30 Join your friends and be the star of the party. Sing your favorite songs with Jim. Please register by August 17. Music by Tim Amann at 12:30 HISTORY OF ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY WORKSHOP Friday, Aug. 26, Sept. 2, 9 & 16 Time: 9:30 to 11:30 Patrick Heline will conduct a 4 week workshop on the history of Anne Arundel County. Anne Arundel County has a rich history and most of that rich history comes from the various towns around the county. This workshop will examine the development and establishment of selected towns within AA County. The selected towns that this course will cover include Londontown, Annapolis, Odenton and Fort Meade, Glen Burnie and Pasadena. Other mentioned histories in the workshop will include communities such as Millersville, Crofton and Gambrills. This class will be limited to 20 members. Please register by August 19. Page 4 Center Information Weather events can happen at any time of the year. Listen to your radio or television. AA County Senior Activity Centers will be closed if all AA County Government Office are closed. If AA County Schools are closed due to weather conditions, the Senior Activity Center will be closed, including lunch & van transportation. If schools are delayed due to weather conditions, Nutrition lunch will be canceled and the center will open at 10 a.m.; all classes prior to 10 a.m. will be canceled. Classes that begin at 10 a.m. or later will be held as scheduled. In the event of an early school closure because of weather, all classes starting at 1 p.m. or later will be canceled and the Senior Activity Center will close at 2 p.m. If schools are closed due to a scheduled break and there is bad weather predicted, please call the Senior Activity Center to confirm the opening or closure or check the AA County Department of Aging & Disabilities website. Regularly scheduled AA County Public School closures, delays or early closures (such as teacher work days or exams) do not affect the Senior Activity Centers. If there is inclement weather and the AA County Public Schools have a regularly scheduled closure, the AA County Department of Aging & Disabilities will make a determination about Senior Activity Center closures and provide this information to the media. SENIOR CENTER DONATIONS WE APPRECIATE ALL DONATIONS THAT ARE MADE TO THE PASADENA SENIOR CENTER. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT ONCE THE DONATION IS MADE, IT BECOMES THE PROPERTY OF THE CENTER TO BE USED AS NEEDED. THANK YOU! PASADENA ACTIVITIES All Programs and activities have been confirmed at the time of this newsletter publication; however, changes and/or cancellations can occur. Activities, classes, van trips and presentations can be cancelled for many different reasons, most of which are out of the control of the Pasadena Senior Center staff. Please adhere to the time limits for registering for an activity or event at the center. Thank you. SENIOR ACTIVITY CENTER PARTICIPATION RULES Anne Arundel County Senior Centers are administered under the auspices of the AA County Department of Aging & Disabilities. Federal , State and local laws have designated these centers as community focal points for the delivery of services to older adults. Membership rules exist so that registered clients and guests can participate in activities in a safe and comfortable environment. At registration you were given a copy of these rules. A copy is also posted on the general bulletin board and copies are available at the front desk for your convenience. Thank you for adhering to our participation rules. SUNSHINE COMMITTEE The Pasadena Senior Center has a Sunshine Committee. If you know or hear of a member who is under the weather, in the hospital or maybe at home recovering from surgery, please let our front desk volunteers, Sandy (Mon) or Margie (Tue) know. They will be glad to send a card or note. STATS MACHINE Don’t forget to scan your membership key tag when attending any activity at the Pasadena Senior Center. The office is located in the Student Services Building on the Arnold Campus. 3) You must bring to the appointment an audiogram or medical statement provided by your doctor or audiologist stating your need for an interpreter. AACC Cycle fee is $80 per semester. AACC classes are open to members 55 years of age or older. If you are between 55-59 there is a $40 per class fee in addition to the cycle fee. If you are 60 + you pay only the cycle fee and classes are free. AACC will not accept cash; payments can be made by check, credit card or money order. Plan and register early so that you don’t miss out on these exciting trips. It is your responsibility to update changes in your personal information with the front office before registering for a trip. Please adhere to the Trip Office hours for registration and payment of trips. Page 9 August 2016 The Transportation Program requires that the van list be sent at least 1 week prior to the trip. You will be able to register for each trip on the first day of sign up. There is a $2.00 commitment fee. (Exact money only will be accepted). Those who cancel after the list is sent to Transportation will not get their $2 commitment fee returned. Forfeited fees will be donated to the senior center. Please note that departure and return times are approximate. The Department of Aging & Disabilities’ van drivers have a full schedule each day that include medical trips, dialysis appointments, shopping, social trips and more. We ask that our members check in at least 10 minutes before the center departure time. You must also factor in traffic and weather if there are delays. Thanks for your understanding!
