LAWRENCE CHURCH SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER PAGE 1 FromthePastor’sHand Christ is Risen! Alleluia! He is risen indeed, just as he said! Alleluia! And Happy Easter on this, the Octave! The Octave of Easter (the season’s 8th of 50 Days) is obviously the “Second Sunday of Easter.” In recent years it has also become known as “Divine Mercy Sunday.” At /irst glance it seems odd to so suddenly be focused on God’s mercy when we’ve just completed 40 Days of Lenten penitence, begging for God’s mercy and forgiveness; the focus now can seem odd because we are now just beginning our great 50 Days of Easter joy with feasting not fasting, a season celebrating new life in Risen One! Well, perhaps looking at the word “mercy” etymologically will help us see how appropriate and, yes, “Easter-y” it is to celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday on the Octave of Easter. In Spanish, a Latin Romance language, the word is “Misericordia:” meaning “to have a heart for those who suffer.” Perhaps in English we would use the word “compassion” here, which literally means “to be with someone in their suffering.” And in English we do speak poetically of the heart (cordia or cardia) having strings (cords): when someone tugs on our “heartstrings,” we have compassion for them, we desire to be with them. If nothing else, the Easter Mystery of Jesus’ Resurrection from the dead calls us to be with others in their suffering. His merciful love for us (proven by His own suffering and death for our sins, and His resurrection that paved the way for our eternal life with Him) tugs at our heartstrings, causing us to then become sharers of the Good News we have received with any and all who are suffering: the sick, the lonely, the ostracized, the forgotten, the maltreated, the lowly, the malnourished, the endangered, the abused, the broken - any and all of those who need compassion. It is Christ Risen who calls us to be His body, the Church, sharing with the world His Divine Mercy!
