Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! Happy Epiphany! Happy Ash Wednesday? That's doesn't sound right... We have been moving so quickly since the beginning of the church year and it has been mostly celebratory. As we approach February, however, we approach Lent. Most ChrisAans associate Ash Wednesday and Lent with repentance, fasAng and in general, no fun. But Lent can also be a reason to rejoice. It's true that it is a Ame where we focus on drawing closer to God through devoAonal life or fasAng in remembrance of Christ's sacrifice. Lent is also the season that marks the wilderness journey of Jesus and invites us to examine those things and places in our lives that seem to drive us away from God. We spend Ame examining our lives and our faith so that we can address the obstacles to a closer relaAonship with our savior. Mid-January Kirsten and I had the privilege of being sponsors for our newest nephew and niece at there bapAsm. My sister in law, the pastor, started the children's sermon with the quesAon of "What is bapAsm?" While it wasn't the scripture for the day, I found myself thinking of Romans 6:3 where Paul writes; "Do you not know that all of us who have been bapAzed into Christ Jesus were bapAzed into his death?" What are we doing to our children, bapAzing them into death!?!? We have to be mindful not to take only a single passage but to read more of Paul's argument. Romans 6:4 follows with, "Therefore we have been buried with him by bapAsm into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life." Ahh, "newness of life." That's what we receive in our bapAsm. That's what we seek to understand with our Lenten pracAces of fasAng and prayer and self examinaAon. I can't wish you a Happy Ash Wednesday but I can pray and wish that your Lenten season will be a blessed Ame rejoicing in God's good creaAon and in your journey to the newness of life promised in Christ Jesus. In Christ, Pastoral Intern Chris Lee 5 6 C ’ M N Happy New Year! I pray everyone is having a wonderful start to the New Year. In Sunday school, we finished the lesson on Christmas and learned about Jesus’s bapAsm. We went into the sanctuary and talked about our own bapAsm. While looking at the bapAsmal font, we talked about how many infant, children, and adults have been bapAzed at the font. AOer pouring a small amount of water in the bapAsmal font, we all touched the water and marked our own forehead with the sign of the cross. We learned that some of us were bapAzed at Zion and some were bapAzed in a different church. We had a wonderful day. In February, we will have a ValenAnes party, during Sunday school, on the 14th. We will make a fun craO, play games and enjoy a special snack. As we prepare for Christ’s death and resurrecAon, we will learn about His journey to the cross. In addiAon, we will learned about the parable of the fig tree and how Jesus was tempted. On January 24 and 31, we will not have Sunday school. Please worship with you family at 9:15am both Sundays. Love and Peace, Katrina Steingraeber WOW WOW Christmas program was awesome Mr. and Mrs. Claus came to see the children at WOW. But, the sun is shining, my house is warm and January is more than half over. So much to be thankful for! I’d like to share some 2015 facts about Cornucopia Food Pantry: Over 21,880 households were served 1,936 new households were registered 2,352 gallons of milk were distributed to families with children 312 tons of food were provided to our neighbors in need PreVy amazing when you remember this is all made possible by a group of dedicated volunteers! The numbers are down from 2014 so I’m hoping this shows economic Ames have improved. Thanks so much to all the Zion “Fluffing” volunteers who helped on January 11th, we prepared a LOT of bags for food distribuAon at the Pantry. We meet again January 25th at 1:30 in the Fellowship Hall. Please join us, it really is fun. Lastly, don’t forget you offerings to Cornucopia. They really are needed to keep this ministry going. We will meet in the Fellowship hall, aOer the second service. There will be a short acknowledgement and historical presentaAon of that ethnic culture in song and verse. Some local musicians will perform and there will be an ethnic celebraAon. MulA-Cultural Team - Ron, Yolanda, Janice, Tom, Joanne, Tyler, Ruth, Pastor Mike, Leona, Deidre, Mutchili, Po Meh, Pastoral Intern Chris F F Our church folk are intenAonal about having the conversaAon about listening to the mosaic community. So, I thought I would share a liVle about my culture as it relates to this church. First, as a woman of color here it is no longer the main focus as it was 20 years ago and work can be done for all the people who come to Zion for help. Fortunately, the Outreach Coordinator posiAon gives me a chance to approach people in our community who are like me....brown. Now, we are no longer called the "white" church by the majority of people who use our services and parAcipate in so many of the acAviAes around the church. Secondly, acAviAes, programs, trips and parAcipaAng in church work would not be allowed not unless you joined and became a member so the majority of black people I know think it is great that we can be a part of this family without condiAons. By the way, they love idea of the one hour service on Sunday. My third comment I would like to make is how much I truly appreciate learning so much about the rich Swedish heritage. And, I am so grateful that I was invited to come and be a part of God's Work. Please remember to make your reservaAons for the upcoming event on February 6th. In His Service, Ruthie Fairchild Seasons of Stewardship S & S Stewardship is about so much more than money. Stewardship, at its core, is about love. It is one of the primary ways that we live out Jesus’ commandment to love God and our neighbor with our whole beings. STEWARDS OF MONEY Luke 12:22-34 MaVhew 19:16-26 Money is a powerful force in our lives. Jesus says that what we do with our money has the ability to take our heart with it (Luke 12:34). God cares about what we do with 100 percent of our money, not just the fracAon that we give to the church. How do we steward all of our money and make sure that the ways we use money aligns with our values? In Luke12:22-34 God tells us to not be upset and concerned with what we will eat or drink. God knows that we need these things. Instead, he tells us to be concerned with his Kingdom and he will provide us with food and drink. STEWARDS OF STUFF Luke 12:13-21 MaVhew 6:19-24 We live in a culture that values accumulaAng and consuming stuff. Many of us have an abundance of stuff — property, clothes, furniture, cars, etc. Similarly, our congregaAon also has physical assets — property, equipment, land, etc. How might we, as individual ELCA members and as a congregaAon, be good stewards of the stuff we have by using it to love God and our neighbor? How might we challenge ourselves to live more simply for the sake of our neighbor? Although we may gather property such as houses, cars, boats and other objects during our lifeAme, God tells us to watch out for and guard ourselves from every kind of greed. We need to consider how the many giOs we accumulate can be shared with our family, friends our church and those without the opportuniAes we have been so blessed to receive. When we pracAce year-round stewardship, we free stewardship from the shackles of the budget so that we can be reunited with God’s mission in the world. We free stewardship from its connecAon to the fall season, so that it can become a way of life. And we free stewardship from the cries of scarcity, so that we can celebrate God’s abundance. www.ELCA.org/growingstewards 11 12 P C Our Prayer Room is open and available for private or small group prayers. G T What you need to know about the recycling codes on plasRc containers: When you turn a plasAc container over you will generally find a code number stamped or printed on the boVom of the container and surrounded by a pyramid of arrows. In the Northern Illinois area the only boVles which can actually be recycled are those labeled #1 or #2. Primarily these will be plasAc boVles and jars with “a neck and shoulders,” such as pop or water boVles, juice and milk boVles or those similar in design. While some companies will accept plasAcs with higher numbers there is no actual recycling facility that can recycle them in the region. They will sAll wind up in the landfill. The codes on the plasAc containers indicate the type of plasAc, most common usages and how they can be reused. For more informaAon, check the KNIB website and click on “Recycling.” Mary Norman 15 9:30 AM Book Study Library 12:30 PM Boy Scout Leadership Meeting 6:30 PM Youth Broom Ball 22 9:30 AM Book Study Library 12:30 PM Boy Scout Leadership Meeting 1:30 PM Bag Fluffing Fellowship Hall 5:30 PM MTLP Council Meeting 29 9:30 AM Book Study Library 12:30 PM Boy Scout Leadership Meeting 21 8:00 AM Traditional Worship 9:15 AM Choir Rehersal 9:15 AM Confirmation - BYC 9:15 AM Nursery/Sunday School 10:30 AM Burmese Worship Chapel 10:30 AM Contemporary Worship 12:00 PM Multi Cultural Committee - Library 28 8:00 AM Traditional Worship 9:15 AM Choir Rehersal 9:15 AM Confirmation - BYC 9:15 AM Nursery/Sunday School 10:30 AM Burmese Worship Chapel 10:30 AM Festive Worship Lutheran High School Choir 9:30 AM & 11:30 AM African American Celebration 2 10:30 AM Staff 11:00 AM Bible Study / In The Bag 12:00 PM Lenten WorshipZion 4:00 PM WOW (4-6PM) 7:00 PM Lenten Worship 1st Lutheran 7:45 PM Zion Partners 7:00 AM Book Study Stockholm Inn 10:30 AM Staff 11:00 AM Bible Study / In The Bag 12:00 PM Lenten Worship - Zion 4:00 PM WOW (4 - 6 PM) 7:00 PM MTLP Lenten Worship Service Emmanuel 24 11:00 AM Bible Study / In The Bag 12:00 PM Lenten Worship - Zion 1:00 PM WOW Leaders 1:00 PM RVC Tutoring Bitner Youth Center 4:00 PM WOW (4 - 6 PM) 7:00 PM MTLP Lenten Worship Service - Calvary 17 Ash Wednesday 9:00 AM Grapevine Article Deadline 9:30 AM Prayer Ministry 11:00 AM Bible Study / In The Bag 12:00 PM Worship 6:00 PM Soup Supper 7:00 PM Worship 10 10:30 AM Staff 11:00 AM Bible Study / In The Bag 1:00 PM RVC Tutoring Bitner Youth Center 4:00 PM WOW (4 - 6 PM) 3 Wednesday 1 7:00 AM Book Study Stockholm Inn 23 7:00 AM Book Study Stockholm Inn 11:00 AM Staff 12:00 PM Zion Outreach 6:00 PM Bldg & Grounds 16 7:00 AM Book Study Stockholm Inn 9:00 AM Staff at Trinity (Fat Tuesday Swedish Pancakes) 8:00 AM Service of Healing 9:15 AM Choir Rehersal 9:15 AM Confirmation - BYC 9:15 AM Nursery/Sunday School 10:30 AM Burmese Worship Chapel 10:30 AM Service of Healing 12:00 PM Servant Trip Planning Meeting 9 9:30 AM Book Study Library 12:30 PM Boy Scout Leadership Meeting 7:00 AM Book Study Stockholm Inn 11:00 AM Discipleship Team 8 2 9:30 AM Book Study Library 12:30 PM Boy Scout Leadership Meeting 3:00 PM Archives Tuesday 1 Monday 14 Boy Scout Sunday 8:00 AM Traditional Worship 9:15 AM Choir Rehersal 9:15 AM Confirmation - BYC 9:15 AM Nursery/Sunday School 10:30 AM Burmese Worship Chapel 10:30 AM Festive Worship 7 Sunday 3 10:00 AM North Conference 4:30 PM Patriots' Board 6:00 PM HR Committee 7:00 PM Church Council 25 9:00 AM Grapevine Mailing 1:30 PM Finance Committee - Library 5:30 PM Zion Development 18 12:00 PM Missions Team 4:00 PM Katie's Cup Board 5:30 PM Zion Development Meeting - Katie's Cup 11 2:00 PM Memorial Committee - Library 4 Thursday February 2016 Calendar 4:00 PM WOW Fish Fry - Fellowship Hall (4-6PM) 4 9:00 AM Evangelism Team 10:00 AM Worship Team 26 19 12 5 Friday 5 27 9:00 AM Worship Leaders Breakfast & Training 20 10:00WELCA Winter Brunch -Tabor 13 4:00 PM Zion Outreach Valentine Jazz Dinner 6 Saturday 14 February 7 Dick Brynteson, Troy Hering Diane Veitch, Wendy Holman Sheryl Andreasen Dick Brynteson, Troy Hering Ruth Fairchild, Mary Norman Mary Norman Jeff Carlson Don Carlson Norm and Colette Buchert February 7 Innocent & Josephine Kathy Hand Michael Beert Innocent & Josephine Phyllis Lind, Norma Daugherty Kathie Ayres Dave Bippus Jeff Hand, Jim Duhigg, Nathan Thomas 8:00am Acolytes Altar Guild Assisting Minister Communion Assistants Greeters Lay Reader Sound Ushers 10:30am Acolytes Altar Guild Assisting Minister Communion Assistants Greeters Lay Reader Sound Ushers Dan Larson, Charles Stanford, Aries Canedy, Ron Simmons Kurt Brown Ruth Larson Aiden Steingraeber, T.
