Spring Luncheon Dates: April 14th Time: 12:00 pm St. Jacob’s Country Playhouse Day Trip Date: Tuesday May 24 Time: 9:00 am Facility Closures: Friday March 25 Monday May 23 The Christmas dinner and dance was again a great time, with a lovely dinner that everyone enjoyed, and the music by The Escapades was also enjoyed by all. The A.G.M. was held on January 28th. Once again the turnout was disappointing for the amount of members that belong to the Grimsby Senior Club. The Advisory Committee would like to thank Lincoln Park Retirement Community for the lovely coffee and cookies that they provided for the A.G.M. meeting. Also I would like to thank the members that put their name forward to fill the positions that were up for re-election. Without these members there would not be a lot of the functions that go on at the activity centre. Also a big thank you to the many volunteers that help with the decorating and setting up for the various functions that are held at the centre. The Valentines luncheon was once again a great success, with the lunch provided by The Little Menu, and the music was provided by Now and Then. Everyone in attendance had a very lovely time. Keep open April 14/2016 for the Spring Luncheon because once again “Elvis” is going to be in the building, so be sure to get your tickets early as the last time he appeared here, it was all most a sold out crowd. Catering will be by The Little Menu. Enjoy the rest of the winter, and hope for a early spring. From the hundreds of members, 30 members, including those who serve on the Grimsby Seniors Club Advisory Committee, attended. There were 8 more members in attendance than in 2014. Annual meetings do not seem to have the interest of a large majority of our members, although decisions are made that may affect everyone. Some decisions were made at this meeting. The revised Terms of Reference and the Volunteer Guidelines were approved. The Social Convenor position was changed to a Social Committee of five Advisory Committee members to look after organizing the Annual General Meeting, Valentines-, Spring-, and Volunteers Luncheons, Fashion Show and Christmas Dinner & Dance, with the assistance of a Decorating Committee. The Liaison Convenor activity was added to the Secretary. And the Friendship Convenor position was eliminated. These changes created a lively discussion why it is so difficult to find out of a 600 + membership so few willing to volunteer, knowing that we have many gifted people. Attracting members for example to fill an advisory committee function, be an activity leader, or being in a friendship role. Some suggested that many don’t know what is involved, and maybe we could do, and will do, better in making members aware of what is expected and what role a person could play. In times where we had one person responsible for ‘friendship visits’ now we can all play a role and look after each other as we participate in the various activities, but also care for one and another when someone is absent for whatever reason. No doubt some of this is happening, bur rather than having one person caring and making visits on behalf of the Seniors Club, we all maintain friendships and experience a caring relationship with each other. It reminds me of what I recently read in an article “Let’s Talk Aging”. Aging involves changes, Changes are usually gradual and occur slowly, often unnoticed. Aging begins at conception and continues until we die. In between we age. Aging happens in stages of being an infant, child, young adult, middle age and older person. Aging occurs at different rates. Everyone goes through the phases at his or her own pace. Aging is irreversible. Once the process of life begins we can’t go back to a previous stage.” What has all of this to do with an annual meeting? I would suggest that we can look back at a good year, and begin a new year not only enjoying ourselves at the activities we participate in , but also have new programs, and find appropriate ways of meeting the needs some of our members may have. Our challenge is to learn from the past and plan for doing things well in the future. Fridays April 13 - June 1 9:00 - 9:45 am $50 for Seniors Club members, $53 for non-members WRITERS CORNER An enjoyable afternoon with Doreen Goddard by Eleanor Harris Doreen and I met at the Livingston Activity Centre, very briefly, about ten days prior to our scheduled interview appointment yesterday. First impressions are usually correct ; Doreen was a smiling, bubbly, and obviously happy lady. She gave me directions to her home, now in Stoney Creek. Doreen's only daughter, Laurel, greeted me at the door. Their home is quite large; Doreen lives downstairs, while Laurel lives upstairs. Each floor is a complete household with large living room, dining area, full sized kitchen, bedrooms with bath. “We each do our own thing”, says Doreen, but we do share dinners together. Doreen was born in England but emigrated to Canada at age nine months to be with her grandmother; her parents followed a year later. She has always lived in the Grimsby area. Doreen married Ernest, her boyhood friend, when he was discharged from World War II in 1946. Their marriage lasted for fifty-five wonderful and happy years together. They had one girl, Laurel, and three boys. Doreen now has six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren, and is expecting another in June. When I arrived to see Doreen, she was crocheting a pink and white blanket for the new baby. “Do you have keepsakes?” Doreen asks; and answered her own question by saying “ I have a locket that Ernest gave me when I was only sixteen”. Doreen has many talents! She is a seamstress – she began by making her own clothes as well as those for her baby girl. Later her sewing skills came in handy for sewing patches on boys jeans! She has also done quite a bit of upholstery over the years. Doreen even ventured into decorating wedding cakes after taking a decorating course. I imagine she is a capable in the cooking area too. Last September she started making seventeen different kinds of cookies for Christmas, beginning with “mellow” gingerbread, and progressing to shortcake and rumballs. You know after talking with her that she is full of fun. Let me describe a Halloween costume she made for herself. She first spray painted cardboard cartons silver which she used to cover her body; she cut the centers from several aluminum pie tins and glued together the rims facing each other, and put them on her arms; on her head, she wore baby food cans, also spray painted silver; and to complete the “robot”, she mounted two wires with red balls on her head as eyes! Doreen is “with it” as they say, for she bought her first IPad in 2012. Doreen has many friends and keeps in touch with them as much as possible. It truly was an afternoon to remember spent with Doreen Goddard. GRIMSBY SQUARE 905-945-9775 42 ST.
