Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
It’s a long Mass today. Palms and Passion all rolled into one. We rejoice
and we become somber as we recall some of the most important events of
our faith. Remember back in January when we read from the very beginning
of Luke’s Gospel. This is what he said: “Since many have undertaken to
compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as
those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning and ministers of the word
have handed them down to us, I too have decided, after investigating
everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for
you.” (Luke 1:1-3)
Luke’s orderly account has Jesus slowly making
his journey to Jerusalem. Today’s Mass brings that
journey to an end, at least as far as our reading of
Luke is concerned. To the acclaim of crowds, Jesus
enters the city on a colt, but his journey eventually
leads him to the Mount of Olives and then to
Golgotha and finally to a rock-hewn tomb. We know
that this is not the end of the story. There are still other events to be fulfilled,
but we will have to wait until we get to Pentecost for that final chapter of
Luke’s narrative.
Mass this weekend, our own journey through life can have its ups and
downs. We can be filled with joy one moment and saddled with grief at
another. Our Lord and Savior experienced the same. As a human person like
us he had joyous times and sad ones as well. The same holds true for those
eyewitnesses who Luke speaks of in the introduction to his Gospel. The ones
who were with Jesus from the beginning also knew both sorrow and joy. They
persisted in the faith, handing down the story of Christ to our day, and in our
joys and in our sorrows we pass on the faith as well.

The letter to the Colossians depicts Christ as the only mediator between God
and the world. A previous passage of the letter presented baptism as the way
we are united with Christ. The author will today remind us of the heights to
which Christ has raised us, and then call upon us to live up to this.

the United States and all over the world. This string craft is easy
to learn and can be done at home or at our weekly Wednesday

many more rosaries. This is a wonderful way to meet parishioners and also help

St. Anne’s Guild for Women’s Spirituality, April 2
Our mission is to support, educate and empower women as we discuss spiritual

Circle of Comfort Support Group, April 4
We offer support through prayer and faith sharing to all who have or

The Bishop’s Appeal—2012 Update
As you know, St. Catharine’s receives an annual rebate from the diocese based
on the contributions of our parishioners to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal that year.
We have now received the final portion of the rebate for last year, which brings
the 2012 rebate to a total of $81,339.77. In keeping with the policy established
at the time of the first Bishop’s Annual Appeal in 2000, that money will be used to
support charitable and missionary activities outside the parish.
Bishop O’Connell has asked us to express his profound appreciation to our
parishioners for their great generosity. Permit me to add my own word of thanks
for the wonderful spirit of love and charity that our people have always exhibited.

News from the Nurses
Colorectal Cancer Screening
Colorectal cancer screening is
strongly recommended for men
and women starting at age 50. The risk of
developing this type of cancer increases with
advancing age. More than 90% of cases
occur in people aged 50 or older.
Screening for colorectal cancer helps
prevent this disease. Screening can find
precancerous polyps (abnormal growths), so
they can be removed before they turn into
cancer. Screening also finds colorectal cancer
early, when treatment works best.
Symptoms of colorectal cancer are
blood in or on your stool; stomach pain,
aches or cramps that don’t go away; and
weight loss but you don’t know why. Risk
factors are inflammatory bowel disease or a
personal or family history of colorectal cancer
or colorectal polyps.
Lifestyle factors that may contribute to
increased risk of colorectal cancer include:
lack of regular physical activity, low fruit and
vegetable intake, a low-fiber and high-fat diet,
being overweight, and alcohol/tobacco use.
If you think you may be at higher than
average risk for this cancer, you should ask
your doctor about getting screened earlier
than age 50.
