[Greetings from Wayne Law]
Dear Wayne Law alumni
and friends:
I am delighted to have this

Dean, Wayne Law has built
upon the solid foundation
established by my
predecessors to position itself
as a force to be reckoned
with in the competitive
world of legal academia.
I am proud to report that
we have forged ahead

already excellent faculty.
We have also partnered
with the Legal Aid and

the Child Advocacy Clinic,
have hosted a number
of lectures and symposia
featuring highly acclaimed
and nationally recognized
speakers, and have
established Public Interest

These accomplishments
and many more have been
made possible by your
generosity. In fact, since
my appointment, you have
helped the Law School raise
more than $2.5 million,
which will assist us further
in recruiting and retaining

Ty Fahner, ’68
The warmth and enthusiasm
are unmistakable in Ty
Fahner’s voice when he talks
about Wayne Law. Former
Attorney General for the
State of Illinois and CEO and
partner of Mayer Brown, one
of the largest law firms in the
world, Fahner’s curriculum
vitae belies the modesty with
which he describes his life
and career.
“I’ve been very lucky,”
Fahner said. “I am blessed
to have the success I have
experienced and I owe a
great deal of that to my time
at Wayne Law.”
Fahner grew up on the
east side of Detroit and
graduated from Denby High
School. Still deciding on
a career path, he received
his Bachelor of Arts degree
from the University of
Michigan, where he met and
married fellow student Anne
Beauchamp. He worked at
several unskilled jobs while
Anne finished her degree.
During this time, Fahner,
envisioning a better life
for Anne and himself, was
accepted at Wayne Law,
commuting almost 100
miles round-trip from Ann
Arbor every day in an old
Volkswagen and sharing the
cost of travel with another
student.
“My time at Wayne Law
created a solid foundation
for my career, and enabled
me to qualify for a Ford

Dear Wayne Law alumni

I wish to add my sincere
thanks to those of Dean

those of the many donors
throughout the school’s
history, much has been
accomplished to move
Wayne Law forward.
We are currently seeking
funding to build the Damon

the story is an inspiring
combination of private
practice and public service,
professional dedication and
volunteer commitment
that has benefited untold
numbers of people around
the world.

a great deal from them in
addition to the principles

career and a good life for me

Fahner generously supports
the school because he feels
he owes Wayne Law a lot. “I
couldn’t meet the expense
of high tuition rates,”
he noted. “None of my
classmates were born with a
silver spoon in their mouths.
We were hungry young
people and Wayne Law, then
as now, gives opportunities
to students who otherwise
couldn’t afford them. That’s
what makes Wayne Law so
special to me and why I’m
involved, financially and as
a volunteer.”

[Making a Difference]
The Wayne Law Community:
Making a Difference in Detroit & Beyond
Cathy LaMont, ’80
the opportunity to make a
difference.”
Now, nearly 30 years later,
LaMont can still be found
most days right in the heart
of “The D.”
As a student enrolled at
Wayne State University Law
School in the late 1970s,
Cathy LaMont and her nowhusband Michael Donovan
— also a Wayne Law graduate
— lived in Detroit only a few
miles from the Law School
and close to the city’s many
attractions.
“I was drawn to the urban
environment surrounding
Wayne Law, as well as
the Law School’s clinical
offerings,” said the 1980
alumna. “To me, Detroit
represented a lot of energy,
vitality and possibility. It
was — and remains — a
city with a lot of grit and
character. I was excited about
9]
In 1989 LaMont, who at
the time was searching for
flexibility in her life due
to the birth of her second
daughter, shifted gears after
practicing real estate law
for more than a decade in
Detroit. She entered the
title industry and, in 2002,
formed the LaMont Title
Corp. to be involved with
commercial transactions on a
nationwide scale and to work
on urban redevelopment with
a focus in Detroit.
According to LaMont, who
serves as president of the
333 West Fort Street-based
corporation, the notion
of starting her own title
insurance company was
spurred under Detroit’s
Archer administration
when Detroit was granted
empowerment zones.
“There was so much land
waiting to be redeveloped,”
she said. “It dawned on me
that there would be new
opportunities if we looked
back into tax-reverted
properties. There was
national investment in the
city but title insurers were
not willing to grapple with
the problem of tax-reverted
properties. It became clear
that nothing was going to
change in the city until
someone stepped up to the
challenge.”
LaMont proved both willing
and able.
Securing titles is a vital
component of Detroit’s
revitalization. It takes time
and energy to determine
who may rightfully lay claim
to a parcel of land, how
property lines may have
shifted over time, and how
and why the land’s value
may have changed. Without
title insurance, a bank will
not lend money secured by
a mortgage and purchasers
cannot be assured that they
own the land free and clear
of defects and challenges to
the title.
Knowing this, LaMont and
her team developed an
expertise on handling titles
for foreclosed properties
and began marketing the
city, resulting in deals with
Detroit stadiums, casinos, the
RiverWalk, the new riverfront
projects and much more.
“In Detroit, you have old
titles, there’s history,” LaMont
explained in a Model D article
from 2006. “We got all the
big deals in town, based on
the company’s willingness to
understand and to insure taxreverted parcels.”
In addition, she was able
to secure a wide variety of
projects that were residential
in nature, a testament to her
unwavering commitment to
community service and urban
development dating back to
her involvement in both the
Free Legal Aid Clinic and the
Landlord/Tenant Clinic while
a student at Wayne Law.
Her team has collaborated
with a large number of area
non-profit organizations to
focus on the rejuvenation of
neighborhoods like Jefferson
Village, Brush Park and more.
LaMont has certainly found
a niche in the city’s business
landscape and continues to
make a difference in the city’s
future economic landscape.
“Detroit is an incredible
community with an unequaled
accumulation of cultural,
historical and entrepreneurial
opportunities,” she said. “It
has been through ups and
downs and its residents remain
resilient, hopeful and strong. I’m
thrilled to be a part of it and am
optimistic for its future.”
Her work has not gone
unnoticed. LaMont has been
the recipient of the following
awards: The Elite Eight Award,
2000 Commercial Inc.; The
Innovator Award, 2004-2005,
Community Legal Resources;
and the 2005 Award for
Outstanding Volunteerism,
Community Legal Resources. She
was also voted a Super Lawyer
in 2006, 2007 and 2008, as well
as one of the Top 50 Women
Lawyers in 2007 and 2008.
LaMont’s dedication to the city
of Detroit makes her the type
of student Wayne Law aims
to enroll.
“Our students and graduates
have the ability to profoundly
alter the economic landscape
wherever they direct their
energies,” said Wayne Law Dean
Robert M. Ackerman. “Cathy
certainly serves as a role model
and inspiration to our students
and alumni. She was unafraid
to take on a challenge and, as a
result, has changed the history
of our great city.”
That respect is certainly mutual
as LaMont credits Wayne Law
as the place that helped start
her on her journey to where she
is today.
“I believe Wayne Law really
gave me a valuable start on
how to practice law,” LaMont
said. “I learned so much from
the faculty — especially from
Professor Mogk, Professor Sedler,
Professor Schenk and Professor
Lombard. It’s a superb school in
an urban environment bursting
with possibilities.” •
Kingsley Noble Osei, 1L
“It will take vigorous defense of human rights to sustain
the dignity of every human being in the future and I
want to be a great defender of global human rights.”
Law stemmed from
the school’s excellent
reputation, high bar passage
rate and the breadth of
courses available. However,
Osei noted that its location
also added to its draw.
Born nearly 5,500 miles
away in his hometown of
Dadease, Ghana, Kingsley
Noble Osei knew little of
where his life would take
him. He did, however,
know at a young age what
he wanted to accomplish
within his lifetime.
“I had always wanted
to study law since [high
school],” said Osei,
who added that his
government teacher was an
accomplished lawyer and
inspired him in his journey.
After graduating from the
University of Ghana, the
country’s oldest and largest
public university, with his
bachelor’s degree in political
science, Osei traveled to the
United States in 2002 to
continue his education.
Over the next few years, he
earned a master’s degree in
public administration from
Central Michigan University
and a master’s degree in
political science from Clark
Atlanta University.
Osei then decided to tackle
one of his lifelong goals.
He applied to Wayne State
University Law School and
is currently a full-time, firstyear law student.
According to Osei, his
choice to apply to Wayne

environment in order
to make meaningful
contributions to society,”
he said. “Detroit is a
multicultural city which
represents true America and
is very welcoming to people
with diverse backgrounds
like me.”
Osei’s background in
Ghana, along with his
passion for knowledge and
understanding, has spawned
a particular focus on human
rights law.
“My interest in human
rights law stems from the
current happenings around
the world where many poor
people, especially in Africa,
live in extreme deprivation
and therefore are willing
to trade their basic rights
for survival,” he said. “I
also grew up under military
dictatorship where many
people suffered human
rights abuses before we
transitioned into democratic
governance.
“It will take vigorous
defense of human rights
to sustain the dignity of
every human being in the
future and I want to be a
great defender of global
human rights.”
Ardent in both his
beliefs and his academic
endeavors, Osei has
developed straightforward
goals for his time at Wayne
Law, which he hopes will
not only lead him to great
success as a lawyer, but will
allow him to impact the
world around him.
“I want to be a good
student by studying hard
and cultivating good
relationships with my
classmates and professors,”
he said.
Well on his way, the
34-year-old student is
already involved with the
American Civil Liberties
Union, the Black Law
Students Association and
the International Law
Students Association.
Although he maintains
focus on the future, Osei
cannot help
but look back on his
educational experiences
and the differences that
exist between obtaining
an education in Ghana
and going to school in the
United States.
“Learning here is more
intense and exam focused,”
he said. “In Ghana, life is
very relaxed and learning
becomes part of normal
life. I look forward to using
my experiences in both
countries as I graduate from
Wayne Law and become a
licensed practitioner.” •

[Making a Difference]
One Year and
Counting:
A look at Robert M. Ackerman’s
first year as Wayne Law Dean
Let’s face it. The job of a
law school dean is not an
easy one. Deans must be
well educated, experienced,
disciplined and respected.
They must be able to adapt
to and thrive in a variety
of roles, including those of
leader, advisor, professor,
team player, diplomat and
fundraiser. Deans juggle a
thousand tasks at once and
hold the future of a law
school in their hands.
Fortunately for Wayne State
University Law School,
Dean Robert M. Ackerman
demonstrates a keen ability
to balance and effectively
transition between his
many roles. In fact, it’s this
ability that has allowed him
to hit the ground running
on numerous new projects
at Wayne Law since his
appointment in January 2008.
“It means a great deal to me
to be a part of the Wayne
Law team and the vibrant
southeast Michigan legal
community,” Dean Ackerman
said in January 2008. “I look
forward to building upon
the solid foundation already
established by Dean Frank
11]
H. Wu and others, and look
forward to playing a role in
shaping Wayne Law’s future.”
Dean Ackerman formally
took office in May 2008 and
has been shaping the Law
School’s future ever since.
Just two weeks into his
tenure, he outlined a number
of initial objectives. Some
of those objectives included
reaching out more effectively
to current and prospective
students, developing and
better defining the Law
School’s mission in the
community, and enhancing
Wayne Law’s already stellar
reputation in the legal
community and in academia.
Now, one year into his
deanship, the dean — a
Harvard Law School alumnus,
former Pennsylvania State
University Dickinson School
of Law professor and former
dean of Willamette University
College of Law — has already
made significant strides in
accomplishing his objectives
and has had a profound
impact on Law School
programming, initiatives and
activities.
In an effort to reach out
to and assist current and
prospective students, Dean
Ackerman established a goal
of making the Law School a
more user-friendly place for
students by suggesting and
implementing new and more
efficient ways to get things
accomplished.
“We are here to help our
students obtain the best
legal education possible,”
said Dean Ackerman, who
also serves as Wayne State
University’s Faculty Athletics
Representative. “As law
school professionals, it is our
job to step in and help clear
away the clutter and red tape
so that students can focus on
the thing that matters most
— their education.”
He has also made it a priority
to hire additional faculty
and staff members, again
allowing the Law School to
serve its students, alumni
and community. Since his
appointment, he has led the
Law School as it engaged in
searches for several faculty
members, a library director,
a business manager, a
legal research and writing
director, an assistant dean
of Admissions, an associate
dean, and several other staff
positions.
“We have been impressed
by the quality and quantity
of applications for both
faculty and staff positions,”
Dean Ackerman said. “I
am confident that we have
hired the best people for
the positions and will move
forward with even greater
momentum in providing an
excellent legal education to
our students.”
With new faculty and staff
members in place, combined
with an already impressive
Wayne Law team, Dean
Ackerman has forged ahead
on a number of initiatives
related to academic
programming and the Law
School’s urban mission in
the community — helping
to position Wayne Law as
the go-to public interest law
school in the Midwest.
He has appointed an ad
hoc faculty committee
to explore programming
options for the future Damon
J. Keith Center for Civil
Rights and Community
Development. The Center,
which will be devoted
to promoting research,
academic programming and
community engagement
on legal and policy issues
relating to civil rights and
urban development, will
serve as Michigan’s primary
civil rights and community
engagement forum.
In August 2008, Dean
Ackerman and Director of
Clinical Education David
Moss, along with the Legal
Aid and Defender Association
of Detroit, announced the
creation of a new client
clinic, the Child Advocacy
Clinic. Like Wayne Law’s
other client clinics, the Child
Advocacy Clinic was created
to provide students with
practical experience and assist
Detroit-area families and
individuals through difficult
times.
Additionally, through the
work and dedication of
the Dean and Wayne Law
Assistant Professor Noah Hall,
the Law School will, in 2009,
offer an Environmental Law
Clinic. The Law School will
also offer an Immigration
Law Clinic in 2010 (proposal
pending).
“Our clinics provide students
with opportunities to address
problems facing urban
residents and environments,”
Dean Ackerman said. “A legal
education involves not only
learning in the classroom
but experiencing the law
outside of it. The work by
Professors David Moss, Dana
Roach Thompson, Noah
Hall and Rachel Settlage
to provide these clinics is
invaluable to students and
the community.”
Dean Ackerman, the Public
Interest Law Association
and a team of law school
faculty, staff and alumni also
created Public Interest Law
Fellowships in an effort to
allow students additional
opportunities to gain
practical experience before
graduation, ease financial
stress and offer needed
assistance to organizations
providing legal services to
underserved constituencies.
Fellowships of $6,000 were
recently awarded to 10
Wayne Law students.
While public interest law
is certainly a focus, so too
are many of Wayne Law’s
existing legal programs.
Dean Ackerman, a founding
member of Mediators
Beyond Borders, has asked
the Faculty International
Programs Committee to
inventory the many strands
of Wayne Law’s international
program, seek out synergies,
and propose new initiatives.
A comprehensive program
proposal has now been
adopted by the faculty.
“This Law School offers a
wide variety of international
program options for students,
and our faculty members
are experts on a range of
legal issues in Africa, Asia,
Europe, North America and
South America,” he said. “As
business and industry become
even more globalized,
Wayne Law’s position
on the nation’s busiest
international border will
be an even greater benefit
for students, alumni and
the community.”
Similar efforts are
likely in the fields
of entrepreneurship,
intellectual property and

health law — all areas of
curricular strength at the Law
School.
It takes a great deal of
energy and resources to
make the kind of impact
Dean Ackerman has already
made on the Law School.
Fortunately, according to
the Dean, he is able to lean
on the wide expertise of his
faculty and staff members to
assist in the implementation
of Wayne Law’s many
initiatives.
The efforts of Senior
Director of Development
and Alumni Relations Mary
Hollens, for instance, have
assisted the Dean and the
Law School in raising more
than $2.5 million since his
appointment.
“We have raised significant
sums for the Law School,
including the Damon J.
Keith Center for Civil Rights
and Community
Development,
through a variety of
initiatives such as
the Class of 1968
Dean’s Challenge
Fund and a
law firm
campaign,” he said. “This
success is directly linked to
Mary’s hard work and the
incredible generosity of our
alumni and friends.”
Dean Ackerman credits his
team for helping Wayne Law
move forward ever stronger.
“The support, competence
and creativity of the Law
School’s faculty and staff
members is remarkable,”
Dean Ackerman said. “We
could not have done any of
these things without their
diligence, thoughtfulness and
extraordinary expertise.”
He added, “Our faculty is first
rate and always rises to the
occasion. And, our students
— the reason we are all here
— are an absolute joy. I
look forward to many
more years as Dean
of Wayne Law.” •

New to Wayne Law:
Public Interest Law Fellowships
Wayne Law recently announced the establishment of Public
Interest Law Fellowships in an effort to allow students
additional opportunities to gain practical experience before
graduation, ease financial stress and offer needed assistance
to organizations providing legal services to underserved
constituencies, reinforcing Wayne State University’s public
service mission.
Approximately $60,000 in total fellowships was awarded to 10
current Wayne Law students who will hold public interest jobs
during the summer of 2009.
• J ason Dinsmore – Great Lakes Environmental Law Clinic/
Wayne Law Environmental Law Clinic

Wayne Law Dean Robert M. Ackerman with PILF
recipient Rita Subhedar.
“We were fortunate to be able to
locate funds for these fellowships
this year, and hope that we are in
a position to continue funding
in the future,” said Wayne Law
Dean Robert M. Ackerman. “In this
time of economic difficulty, it is
especially important that we help
worthy organizations to provide
legal assistance to underserved
constituencies. At the same time, we
can provide hands-on opportunities
for students and help relieve some
financial stress.” •
Wayne Law’s Public Interest Law Association
The Wayne Law Public Interest
Law Association endeavors to
broaden the perspective of
future lawyers by promoting
legal work that not only serves
the surrounding communities
but also improves the quality of
life for the individuals assisted
by the organization’s members.
“PILA strives to create
opportunities for students who
are interested in practicing
public interest law,” said PILA
President Sarah Kwiatkowski.
“PILA’s membership represents
the Law School’s commitment
to serving the urban mission of
the university as a whole. That
13]
means that our students are
committed to using their law
degrees to help out poor and
underserved communities.”
In fact, a large focus for PILA
members involves helping
Wayne Law
students find
funding for their
legal education
so that they can
pursue the jobs
of their choice
instead of jobs of
necessity upon
graduation.
Not only does
PILA assist with
the planning of scholarship
fundraisers, such as the
Treasure of Detroit Silent
Auction, but the organization
was instrumental in producing
a faculty-endorsed proposal for
a Wayne Law Loan Repayment
Assistance Program. The
organization also recently
played a crucial role in the
development of Public Interest
Law Fellowships (see above).
Sean Blume, ’02
Detroit area blossomed while
he was enrolled at Wayne
Law. A 1999 graduate of
the University of Detroit
Mercy, he originally applied
to Wayne Law due to the
Law School’s location in an
urban setting and the number
of potential job prospects
available to him after
graduation.
Students expect to see their
professors on a regular basis
once enrolled in law school.
What don’t they necessarily
expect to see? The always
friendly face of a prominent
Detroit-area attorney,
volunteer and Wayne Law
alumnus. In fact, at Wayne
Law, one of the most
recognizable faces is that of
2002 alumnus Sean Blume.
As current president of
the Wayne Law Alumni
Association, Blume is
very active on the Board
and is always willing to
participate in meetings,
events and activities that
assist in enhancing Wayne
Law’s future. Blume sits on
a number of committees,
volunteers his time to mentor
current students, gives of
his resources at student
and alumni events, and is
instrumental in fostering
excitement and engagement
among Law School alumni.
Quite possibly the most
remarkable aspect of
Blume’s involvement with
Wayne Law, however, is his
simultaneous involvement
in and passion for a number
of other Detroit-area
organizations and initiatives
— all while leading his own
law practice.
The Farmington Hills
resident’s affection for
community service and the
“I certainly did not just
end up at Wayne Law
accidentally,” Blume said.
“I went to great efforts
to compare the available
Michigan law schools. The
end selling point for me — in
addition to being located in
the heart of Detroit — was
that I was put in touch with
a recruiter for one of the
major firms and asked him
where they are hiring their
employees from. He said
that most were coming from
Wayne Law.”
While a student, Blume
served as president of the
Wayne Law Student Board of
Governors, assisted with the
reactivation of the Wayne
Law chapter of Habitat for
Humanity under the direction
of Wayne Law Professor
John Mogk, and purchased a
Detroit condo.
Upon graduation, he
reached out to the Wayne
Law community through a
position in the Law School’s
Office of Development and
Alumni Relations before
spending three monumental
years heading up non-profits
that worked with Wayne
County foster youth who
were aging out of the foster
care system. He also bought a
home in Detroit.
“It was heading up grants
in the area of foster care
and delinquency that really
got me into helping young
adults in Detroit,” Blume
said. “At that point I had
graduated from Wayne
Law and, as many recent
graduates do, I felt a sense
of accomplishment. I had
struggled quite a bit in getting
up to and then through law
school and I really felt that
I had accomplished what I
wanted to do.
“That freed me up to look
around and figure out how
I could help out. Taking
the work with foster youth
aging out of the foster care
system was a natural match
for me since I had spent
several years in- and out-ofhome placement when I was
a teenager due to my own
juvenile delinquency issues.
That also led me to the work
in the juvenile court where I
now represent kids in foster
care and delinquency cases.”
Blume then spent close to
a year working with the
Detroit City Council as a
staff attorney to Sheila M.
Cockrel, which allowed him
to take an even more handson approach to moving
Detroit forward.
“I had taken several law
school classes in the area
of local government and
I was excited to dive in,”
Blume said. “The work was
incredible and I loved the
experience. It instilled in me
a better sense of the impact
of non-profits on a city with
regard to issues like housing,
legal services and recycling.”
Blume’s dedication to
making a difference through
his involvement with area
non-profits amazes those
around him. Some of the
many organizations he has
volunteered with include
The Greening of Detroit,
Community Legal Resources,
Recyclean and Detroit
Synergy. He also recently
served as a mentor with the
DREAM Academy Mentoring
Program — a program advised
by Wayne Law Associate
Professor Janet Findlater and
sponsored by the State of
Michigan — which matches
11th- and 12th-grade students
at risk of not completing high
school, and who had been
in foster care, with a group
of mentors who could help
support them.
So, how does he find the
time? Or the energy, for
that matter?
“Although I have gotten
much busier than when
I first graduated from law
school, I try to offer my
support when I can,” Blume
said. “People can make a
profound difference in their
communities by lending their
time, energy or resources. I
just try not to say no when
asked to help out.”
Fortunately for Wayne Law,
Blume continues to show his
face around the Law School
— all the more impressive
since in 2007 he started his
solo practice focused on
family and criminal law, all
while continuing to represent
neglected and abused
children in Wayne County.
Most recently, Blume has
taken advantage of an
opportunity to expand his
practice and has opened an
office in the Femminineo
Building in Mt. Clemens.
An inspiration to countless
people, Blume’s involvement
with Wayne Law and in the
Detroit community is sure
to have a positive impact for
years to come.
“Sean has been a terrific ‘goto’ guy for all of us here at
Wayne Law,” said Wayne Law
Dean Robert M. Ackerman.
“He is committed to the
success of this Law School
and its students, and for that
we are very appreciative.” •

Members of the Wayne
Law Class of 1968 found a
lasting way to commemorate
their 40th anniversary
by establishing a class
fundraising vehicle for the
Law School — the Dean’s
Challenge Fund. Announced
in February 2008, the fund
has a goal of $1 million.
With the enthusiastic
endorsement of the Wayne
Law Board of Visitors, the
university has contributed
$170,000 in matching funds
each year for three years.
The final year of this support
is contingent on the fund
reaching a minimum of
$340,000 in hand by
January 2010.
“In the rapidly changing
and increasingly complex
world of legal education, our
school needs the unwavering
commitment of its alumni
to assure that Wayne Law
can meet and exceed the
standards for a superb
learning experience,” said
Thomas Kienbaum, co-chair
of the Dean’s Challenge
Fund. “Competition is fierce
among law schools. Wayne
Law must continually
buttress its reputation to
attract and retain the best
faculty and the highest
caliber students.”
Contributions to the
Dean’s Challenge Fund can
be designated to support
students, faculty and
initiatives viewed important
by the Dean. On behalf of
students, the Career
Services Office provides
comprehensive career
planning and professional
development assistance, a
high priority for today’s law
students. Faculty support
includes time for writing
and research as well as

[Giving to Wayne Law]
Friend Giving Profile:
The Ravitz Family
After Justin Ravitz passed on
in December 2007, his wife
Berna and children Jason,
Jessica and Anthony wanted
to commemorate his life by
establishing a scholarship
in his name. Although Mr.
Ravitz was not an alumnus
of Wayne Law, he was
devoted to the practice of
law in Detroit, both as an
attorney and as a judge in
Detroit Recorder’s Court for
many years.
“The children and I carefully
reviewed the options of
having a scholarship at his
alma mater or at Wayne
Law,” said Mrs. Ravitz.
“While both possibilities
had many positive aspects,
we decided on
behalf of Detroit
law students who
will carry on my
husband’s work.”
Justin Ravitz left a
tremendous legacy.
Born into a family
whose members
have demonstrated
outspoken passion
for worthy causes
through several
generations, Ravitz’
own innate sense
of justice was
nurtured as a young
radical lawyer and
leader in Detroit’s
leftist movement.
Committed to
opposing the
21]
conservative establishment,
he helped to shut down a
lethal decoy police squad,
change a jury selection
process that favored whites
and improve the thendeplorable Wayne County
Jail conditions.
As a judge, Ravitz dazzled
the legal community with
his intellect and fairness,
even when he knew
decisions might create
firestorms. In private
practice, he battled for
handicap accessibility on
city buses, represented
wrongly convicted clients
and sought justice for sex
abuse victims.
The Ravitz family sought a
way to empower students to
follow their passion to ‘do
the right thing,’ a pursuit
Ravitz maintained with
unwavering integrity.
“Through a colleague of
my husband, I learned that
the caliber and dedication
of Wayne Law students
are very high, assuring us
that we will be benefiting
future practitioners who
will be committed to
public service,” Mrs. Ravitz
said. “We also discovered
that Wayne Law will be
supportive of our efforts to
raise the money needed to
endow the scholarship, a
major factor in our decision
to house the scholarship at
Wayne Law.”
The Justin C. Ravitz
Memorial Scholarship
will support students who
exhibit a commitment to
social justice work. The
Ravitz family can think of
no better way to honor a
man who spent his legal
career, as well as his energies
outside the office and
courtroom, striving to right
the wrongs in Detroit and
beyond, making a difference
and changing lives for the
better. •

Wayne Law that will
support law students and
legal education far into
the future? Dean Robert
M. Ackerman and Senior
Director of Development
and Alumni Relations
Mary Hollens are
working with Gerrie
Paulson, Wayne State University director of Planned Gifts,
to ensure strong support for the future of the Law School.
It’s much easier than you may think to create a gift that will
make an impact, either now or after your lifetime.
You can establish a legacy in a number of ways:
Michael Witzke, ’89, is a volunteer who assists Dean
Ackerman and the Law School development staff with
the Planned Gifts program. He practices in the areas of
estate and gift tax planning, financial planning, retirement
planning, charitable giving, elder law and small business
planning. He is available to discuss planned gifts that will
benefit Wayne Law.
For more information about establishing a Wayne Law
legacy or to contact Mr. Witzke, call Gerrie Paulson at (313)
577-6483 or send an e-mail to g.paulson@wayne.edu. We
look forward to exploring with you the ways you and your
clients can establish lasting support for Wayne Law and
future Law School students. •
•A bequest in a will or trust, for a specific amount or a
percentage of the estate
•“Life-income” gifts that provide income to the donor
(and/or other beneficiary) for life and the remainder of
the fund to Wayne Law
•A gift from your otherwise heavily taxed retirement
fund assets
•
A life insurance policy
•A Charitable Lead Trust that provides income to Wayne
Law for a specific number of years or for a lifetime, with
the remainder to your beneficiaries with minimal taxes
•Other assets such as real estate, closely-held stock,
business practices, partnerships, contracts, leases,
royalties and patents
Gifts can be designated for student scholarships, for faculty
support, for named Endowed Chairs or for specific programs,
such as the Public Interest Law Fellowships initiative or the
Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights and Community
Development. Gifts for the Law School that are not
specifically designated will be used where they are needed

educational institution that refines its students into well-
opportunity to continue my studies at the Law School —
rounded, practical and successful attorneys.”

highly competitive academic setting. But receiving them is also
excellence in the classroom — a focus that has better prepared
a tremendous show of confidence. It’s someone taking the time
me for the practice of law.”
