CA’ FOSCARI
Profile
/
Ca’ Foscari University of Venice has a nationally
and internationally outstanding reputation for
academic excellence in the fields of teaching
and research. Established on August 6th,
1868 as a Royal Business College, Ca’ Foscari
University of Venice was the first educational
institution in Italy to offer higher education in
business and economics. Throughout the years
it has grown and developed new relevant subject
areas. In 1954 the Faculty of Foreign Languages
and Literatures was established, followed by the
Faculty of Humanities and Chemistry in 1969.
The various departments of the University are
spread throughout Venice (www.unive.it/maps)
but the main building is Palazzo Ca’ Foscari, the
Venetian-Gothic building located on the largest
bend of the Grand Canal. The palace, which was
purchased and renewed by Doge Francesco
Foscari in 1452, contains important artistic and
architectural works, some of which include a
room with a 16th century stucco work by the
Venetian sculptor Alessandro Vittoria (15251608) and a great hall designed by the Venetian
architect Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978), with two
murals by Mario Sironi and Mario de Luigi.
Between 2004 and 2006 Ca' Foscari underwent
a painstaking restoration programme, which was
awarded the prestigious “Premio Torta” in 2007. It
is possible to visit Palazzo Ca’ Foscari with to Ca’
Foscari Tour Service (www.unive.it/cafoscaritour).
Ca' Foscari is ranked third among Italian
Universities by the Ministry of Education,
University and Research ranking 2011 for the
allocation of the Ordinary Fund for Higher
Education; it is ranked fourth by the three-year
Strategic Plan 2012.
It actively participates in Venetian cultural
life, organizing over 700 events every year in
collaboration with other prestigious cultural
institutions as well as successful art exhibitions
at “Ca’ Foscari Esposizioni,” the exhibition space
in the main building.

CA’ FOSCARI INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE
Ca’ Foscari International College is a higher
education institution which attracts gifted and
high-achieving students from Italy and abroad.
The International College provides
accommodation to the selected students on the
Island of San Servolo, an international residential
campus located in the Venice Lagoon. With its
global and multicultural atmosphere, students
will accrue an open-minded approach that will
accompany them throughout their academic
career. The College selects students from the
undergraduate and master’s levels who are then
offered, besides the curriculum requirements
of their respective degree programmes, the
possibility to participate in an additional
interdisciplinary programme of courses and
innovative activities arranged by the College.
The cultural programme is conducted in English.
However, students are strongly encouraged to
engage in the programme’s international climate,
whether through the study of other languages or
in the completion of an international internship.
The aim of the College is to create a stimulating
environment in which talented young students can
excel in their varied areas of study and research,
while also nurturing their social intelligence, or
rather, their ability to interact with others in an
efficient, constructive, and flexible manner.
Other than the Director, the College defers to
an Educational Advising Counsel composed
of professors from the various fields of study
represented at Ca’ Foscari, as well as a Scientific
Academic Committee made up of prominent
members and experts from Ca’ Foscari every year.
The International College will select students at
the undergraduate level and at master’s level for
the 2014/2015 academic year.
All students of Ca’ Foscari International College
are eligible to receive partial or total tuition
scholarships in regards to accommodation,
enrolment fees, cultural programmes, and mentor
services. The students that complete their studies
at the College, and fulfill the foreseen academic
requirements, will receive a Diploma from Ca’
Foscari International College that can be attached
to their final academic Diploma.

Since 1999, Italian university studies have been
reformed in order to meet the objectives of
the “Bologna Process”. The Italian educational
system provides First Cycle and Second Cycle
Degree Programmes (Lauree and Lauree
Magistrali), together with First and Second level
Professional Master’s Programmes (Master
Universitari di I e II livello), Research Doctorates
(corresponding to the third cycle of the
educational system) and Specializing Schools.
FIRST CYCLE
First cycle studies consist exclusively of Degree
Programmes (Corsi di Laurea), aimed at
guaranteeing students an adequate command
of general scientific methods and contents
as well as specific professional skills. The
general requirement is the school-leaving
qualification awarded on completion of 13 years
of global schooling and after the relevant State
examinations; equivalent foreign qualifications
may be accepted as well. Admission to Degree
Programmes may be subject to specific
requirements. Degree Programmes last 3
years. The 1st cycle degree (Laurea) is awarded
to students who have earned 180 university
credits. However, the completion of a training
period and the defence of a thesis may also be
required. The 1st cycle degree grants access
to competitions for the civil service, regulated
and non-regulated professions, first Level
Professional Master's Programmes and 2nd
Cycle Degree Programmes.
SECOND CYCLE
Second Cycle Degree Programmes (Corsi di
Laurea Magistrale) are aimed at providing
students with an advanced level of education
for highly qualified activities in specific areas.
Access is allowed after having achieved a
1st Cycle Degree or a comparable foreign
degree; admission is subject to specific course
requirements determined by each university;
Second Cycle Degree Programmes last 2 years
for 120 university credits. The awarding of the
Second Cycle Degree is conditional on the
successful defense of a thesis.
A limited number of 2nd Cycle Degree
Programmes (dentistry, medical studies,
pharmacy, veterinary studies…) are one-block
programmes (Corsi di Laurea a ciclo unico);
access is allowed after having achieved the
school-leaving diploma or a comparable foreign
qualification; admission is subject to selective
entrance exams; each degree programme is
organized in just one block of 5 years and 300
university credits (only medical studies requires
6 years and 360 credits). All 2nd Cycle Degree
Programmes grant access to competitions for
the civil service, regulated and non-regulated
professions, second-level Professional Master's
Programmes and Research Doctorates (3rd
Cycle).
FIRST AND SECOND LEVEL SPECIALIST
MASTER’S PROGRAMMES
First and Second level Professional Master’s
Programmes normally involve one year of fulltime study. Only graduates who have completed
at least a First Cycle Degree Programme are
accepted for a First Level Professional Master’s
Programme, whereas only those who have
completed a Second Cycle Degree Programme
are admitted to a second level Professional
Master’s Programme. These programmes are
aimed at providing students with advanced
educational and professional knowledge.

These studies include the following typologies:
A) Research Doctorates (Dottorati di Ricerca)
aim at preparing students for advanced
scientific research, innovative teaching
methodologies, updated technologies,
training periods abroad and supervised
activities in specialized research centres.
Admission requires a 2nd Cycle Degree (or
a comparable foreign degree) and is based
on selection by a committee. Studies last a
minimum of 3 years. The doctoral student
must submit an original dissertation to be
defended during the final examination.
B) Specializing Courses (Corsi di
Specializzazione) are devised to provide
students with knowledge and abilities as
required in qualified professions; these
courses mainly concern medical, clinical
and surgical specialties. Admission requires
a Second Cycle Degree (or a comparable
foreign degree) and successful completion
of competitive examination; course length
varies in relation to subject fields. The
final Diploma of Specialization (Diploma
di Specializzazione) awards the title of
“specialista”.

EUROPEAN CREDIT
TRANSFER SYSTEM (ECTS)
/
/
ACADEMIC
CALENDAR 2014/2015
/
The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)
is a system for transferring university credits
throughout Europe. It is based on the clarity
and transparency of the students’ plans of
study and on the assignment of appropriate
credits for work completed. The objective of
this system is to guarantee that credit for the
courses and exams taken during the period
spent abroad is granted according to clear rules,
known to students before leaving and based on
precise and recognized agreements ruled by
mechanisms that are common to all institutions
participating in the Programme.
WELCOME DAYS
Ca' Foscari University of Venice - according to
European directives regulating the ECTS - has
established in a session of the Academic Senate
that 1 CFU = 1 ECTS.
Additionally, following the ECTS guide (ECTSuser’s guide), European universities that
participate in the system’s credit transfer
are required to use the new process of grade
conversion of credits acquired while abroad. This
system is based on the distributive percentage
of grades according to a department’s
individual guidelines. Until the new system is
adopted by all university partners. However the
traditional system, (A, B, C, D, E) will continue to
be used, as revised by each department.
For further information on grade conversions, visit:

LEARNING ITALIAN
AT CA’ FOSCARI
/
University Language Centre
(Centro Linguistico di Ateneo – CLA)
The University Language Centre (CLA) of Ca’
Foscari University of Venice encourages the study
of foreign languages and considers it to be an
essential element of the educational experience
of every student as well as a life-long learning
opportunity for the public.
The study of foreign languages presents the
possibility to reach for goals beyond those of
curriculum study and research, encompassing
personal and professional growth.
The course offerings by the CLA that could be of
interest for international students are:
•Language courses (levels Q. C. E. R) that last
for the duration of one trimester (SeptemberDecember, January-March, or April-June) for
French, English, Italian for foreigners, Russian,
Spanish, and German.
Each course includes 60 course hours = 50
hours of lecture + 10 hours of independent
laboratory study + final exam.
In certain periods throughout the year,
Intensive Italian Courses for Foreigners (42

THE UNIVERSITY WEBSITE – FAQs
GETTING CONNECTED
The Ca' Foscari University of Venice encourages
the use of computer applications to support
teaching and learning activities in collaboration
with the IT Service Area.
Thanks to the Wi-Fi network, all Ca’ Foscari
students have free access to internet, both by
using workstations available in the University
departments and libraries and through the use
of a personal mobile phone, pc or tablet.
University Wi-Fi Network
The University wireless network allows access to
the University network and Internet resources.
Details of access to the wireless network and the
instructions to connect personal apparatus are
available at the following website venus.unive.it/
wifi/index.php?&cmd=eduroam&os=&lang=en
Ca’ Foscari belongs also to EDUROAM, a wireless
network for research and education community
which allows you to connect to the Internet
at any participating Eduroam institutions
worldwide by using your own username and
password.
Access to the Wi-Fi network follows specific
rules and modalities defined by the federation
Eduroam.
Wi-Fi in Venice
Thanks to a new agreement, Ca’ Foscari users

name and password using the Wi-Fi network
offered by the comune of Venice.
The login will be possible at the network
identified as VeniceConnected. This network
will have to be selected, in the usual way
proposed by the platform being used.
28
Once connected to the Wi-Fi, it is necessary to
use a web browser to login in any public URL
(e.g.: www.unive.it). You will then be redirected
into an authentication page (captive portal) of
the Municipality of Venice, that will request the
introduction of the necessary credentials.
The login and password to be introduced are:
• Username: username@unive.it
• Password: password
where the username is the ordinary username
of the user (with the domain @unive in addition)
and the usual password.
Once the authentication is carried out, it will be
possible to surf the web.

All necessary health care for European and
EU-equated students is covered by the Italian
National Health Service. However, you need to
have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC
or TEAM) which is issued by your national health
authorities. If you do not have a EHIC card,
you should contact the health service in your
country prior to your departure.
This card ensures that you will have the same
access to public sector health care (i.e. access
to a doctor, recovery in a hospital or a health
care centre) as a citizen of the country you are
visiting. In general you should be provided with
adequate care.
However, it is important to note that the card
does not cover payments for private sector
health care providers, in this case it is necessary
to take the S2 route belonging to your country.
In the case that you change your residence in
Italy, you should ask your home country to take
the S1 route, which gives you the possibility
of receiving the same health care as an Italian
residing citizen, through compulsory registration
to the National Health Service. Registration to
the National Health Service has to be done in
the Health District that you belong to.

Students from countries with bilateral
agreements (Brazil, Australia, Bosnia
Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia,
Republic of San Marino, Monaco, Croatia)
Students from countries with bilateral
agreements can benefit from health insurance
from the National Health Service, thanks to the
specific forms released by the health service
institutions of their respective countries. You
can check the countries for their relevant health
forms as follows:
Australia – medicare card (valid just for 6 months
from the entrance in Italy)
Brazil - I/B 2 Certificate
Croatia – 111 Certificate
Bosnia, Herzegovina, Macedonia, Serbia and
Montenegro – OBR7 Certificate
Principality of Monaco – I/MC 8 Certificate
Republic of San Marino – I/SMAR 8 Certificate
These Certificates must be delivered to the
Health District before you request health care.
The Health District in turn will give you a specific
Certificate, that can be used anytime you need
health care in Italy.
These forms do not cover the costs of private
health care, but allow you to obtain urgent health
services during your stay in Italy in public health
centers. If you need planned health care, you
must have a specific Certificate released by your
country. As an alternative to all the certificates
cited above, it is possible to subscribe to the
regional Health Service following the procedures
described below.
Non – European Students
When Applying for a Residency Permit, nonEuropean students will be required to provide
evidence of health insurance coverage. The
health insurance coverage can be obtained:
•With a private health insurance contract:
You can privately insure yourself both in
Italy and abroad with an insurance company
that issues insurance fulfilling the following
requirements:
•Must be valid in Italy;
•Covers all the risks of illness;
•Has coverage for the duration of your stay in
Italy and has specified its date of release and
expiration;
•Indicates the procedures needed to ask for a
reimbursement;
•Can be legally translated into the Italian
41
language if the insurance policy has been
provided by your country of origin.
•With a voluntary registration to the
Regional Health Service
In this case the student should go to their
Health District with:
•A copy of the residency permit or the receipt
for your residency permit request released by
the qualified Post Offices (Post office receipt);
•Fiscal code;
•Receipt of the required payment completed in
the bank account n. 343301 of “Poste italiane
S.p.A- C.S.S.N. Regione Veneto”.
The voluntary registration gives you the
right to obtain the same health care as an
Italian citizen, it is valid for a calendar year
(1st January – 31st December), the payment
cannot be divided and cannot be changed
afterwards.

Prepaid cards are the cheapest way to call
abroad if you do not have a mobile phone. You

VENICE
AN OVERVIEW
/
The Veneto Region
Venice is the capital of the Veneto region. Situated in the north-east of Italy, this area boasts a
diverse variety of climates and geography: from the mountainous Dolomites to Garda lake, to the
sandy beaches of the coast and the mild hills of the mainland. There are six provinces and main
cities that are worth visiting and can be reached easily by public transportation: Padua, Treviso,
Vicenza, Verona, Belluno and Rovigo.
…where lions fly!
Built upon the waters of the Venetian lagoon, Venice is made up of 118 small islands connected by
150 canals and more than 400 bridges. The most commonly-known part of Venice is the historical
centre, which is cut into two areas by the Grand Canal. However, the city also encompasses a section
of the mainland - which is connected to the islands by a 4 kilometre long bridge and a number of
islands within the Venetian lagoon (Murano, Burano, Torcello, Lido…).
One of the first things that you will notice upon your arrival is the particular way in which Venetians
name their streets, etc., it truly is a world apart.

RECYCLING
VENICE
/
Generally speaking, Italy is a country that
experiences four seasons. These normally include
a warm and sunny spring, a hot and humid
summer, a mild autumn and a cold and foggy
winter. As a matter of fact, if you are spending the
entire year in Italy, you need to bring a variety of
clothing. Consider that you will walk a lot in Venice;
do not forget a pair of comfortable shoes.
Below you will find a list of general expenses
you should include in your budget together with
the related average prices. While the following
amounts are obviously approximate, you need
to consider a monthly budget of 750 Euros.
Venice is committed to recycling: if you are
living in the city you need to respect the
regulations regarding the separate collection of
rubbish.
Acqua alta
"Acqua alta" (high water) is a phenomenon which
generally takes place in wintertime, when the
astronomical tide and wind cause a larger inflow
of water into the lagoon. Only exceptionally high
waters affect the whole town and usually the high
water lasts only a couple of hours.
In the case of “Acqua alta”, people are alerted by
acoustic signals. The City Council set up platforms
along the main streets to allow passage. Generally,
access to most of the town is guaranteed. When
the high water is higher than 120 cm, the famous
rubber boots are needed. Normally high water
causes very little inconvenience to people and
most of the time it represents an amazing way to
discover the city from a peculiar point of view.
The Venice City Council posts notifications of
high water in advance. You can be notified by sms
if you register on the following website: www.

hi!tide is the official app for monitoring the tide in
the city of Venice, developed in collaboration with
the Tide Forecast Center.
The app allows you to monitor the current tide in
Venice and provides detailed tide forecasts for the
next two days. hi!tide can tell you if different places
around the city are flooded or if you can walk
without getting wet.

VENETIAN EATING
HABITS
/
Venetian cuisine combines regional tradition
with the general features of a Mediterranean
diet. Healthy food is accompanied by the
pleasures of eating and cooking.
In Venice, as in the rest of Italy, there are three
main meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner, with
several breaks during the day.
However, aperitif may be a new encounter.
The typical drink for aperitif here is the spritz,
which is usually served with small appetizers
called cicheti, and normally ordered at the
little bars in the campo (bacari); it is a special
occasion to meet other people and celebrate
the end of the day by chatting until late at
night.
Eating out is very common on weekends
and it is not necessarily expensive. Cafés
are normally open the whole day from early
morning to late night while restaurants
usually open at 11.30AM and close at 3.30 PM
for lunch and then open again at 6.00PM until
12.30 PM for dinner.
Bars are the place to go for a quick snack,
while osterie and trattorie serve traditional
cuisine, and pizzerie specialize in pizza and
some offer a take-away service. Moreover,
in Venice there are a number of ethnic
restaurants where you can taste specialties
from all over the world.
Although it is not really common to leave tips,
they are welcome when you want to show a
deep appreciation for the meal or the service.
There is no fixed rate, normally it amounts to
a few coins or a bit of spare change.

UNIVERSITY
GLOSSARY
/
ANNO ACCADEMICO - ACADEMIC YEAR The
Academic Year usually begins in September and ends
in August/September of the following year. Each
academic year is divided into two semesters, which are
organised into two terms each. The duration of each
term is approximately one month and a half (5 weeks
of lecture plus 1 week of extra/rescheduled lectures).
APPELLO D’ESAME - EXAM DATES Each course
includes at least 3 different dates in which the related
exam can be taken. The dates of the various exams
are grouped into sessions which are organized
during specific times of the academic year. The main
exam sessions are usually held in January/February,
May/June and September. Moreover, for courses
occurring in the first period or in the third period,
exams can also be taken in November and in March.
AREA RISERVATA - PERSONAL AREA Every student
at Ca’ Foscari has a virtual personal area, available
through the University website. You can access your
personal area with your matriculation number and
password, given to you upon your registration. Within
your area, you can register for exams, organize your
plan of study, grades, and your class ranking.
CAF - TAX ASSISTANCE CENTRE CAF (Tax Assistance
Centre) provides the necessary assistance for the
completion of the ISEE, an obligatory document to
certify a student’s financial need if he or she would
like to request a tuition reduction or a scholarship. On
the University website, there is a list of the documents
required by CAF for ISEE calculation.
CAMPUS It is a point of reference for students
in the various Departments. Thanks to the Front
Office it helps students with educational activities
(i.e. exam registration).
CARTA MULTISERVIZI - UNIVERSITY BADGE
Student card given to each student, to be used for
university services (libraries, copies etc.). The Card
can also be used as a prepaid card: students just
have to activate it using one of the banks listed on
the website. For further information, please see:
www.unive.it/nqcontent.cfm?a_id=84935
CLASSI DI LAUREA - MINISTERIAL DEGREE
CODES All degree programmes with common
educational objectives and teaching/learning
activities are organized in groups (classi di laurea).
62 Degree programmes may be given different names
by the different universities, but if they have the
same ministerial degree code it means that the
learning outcomes and teaching/learning activities
are the same. Therefore, degree programmes with
the same code lead to the same qualifications with
the same official value.
CORSI DI LAUREA AD ACCESSO PROGRAMMATO
- DEGREE PROGRAMMES WITH LIMITED
PLACEMENT Aside from the programmes offered at
Ca’ Foscari in which all students can enrol, there are
several degree programmes that require an entrance
exam. After the exam, students are selected and the
results are then published. In order for a student to
be considered for a degree programme with limited
spots, they must pre-register online for the entrance
exam, as well as pay an exam fee before taking the
test. If the student is ranked high enough among the
exam results and offered a spot, they must make it
known that they would like to accept their place in
that respective degree programme before they can
be officially enrolled.
CREDITO FORMATIVO CFU - UNIVERSITY
CREDIT The Italian University system measures
students’ workload with CFUs (Crediti Formativi
Universitari): one credit corresponds to 25 hours
of activity (individual study, classroom educational
activities, internships, etc...). Only by passing
his/her exams and carrying out the educational
activities required by his/her plan of study, can a
student acquire 60 university credits per academic
year - this amount is also called a course load. A
First Cycle Degree Programme requires a total of
180 university credits, whereas a Second Cycle
Degree Programme requires 120 credits. 1 CFU
corresponds to 1 ECTS (European Credit Transfer
and Accumulation System).
DIPARTIMENTO - DEPARTMENT Departments
promote, coordinate and organize the academic
(teaching and research) activities of the Degree
Programmes, for which they are responsible.
Following the recent organisational reform, Ca'
Foscari now has 8 Departments.
ESAME - EXAM For every exam passed, students
are awarded a certain number of credits according
to the courses followed and quantitative evaluation.
The exam may be written or oral, or both. The
minimum passing mark is 18/30 while 30/30 is the
highest, with the possibility of honours (30 e lode).
ESAME DI LAUREA - FINAL DEGREE EXAM At
the end of a Degree Programme, the preparation of
a thesis and a thesis defense, under a supervisor
with possible co-supervisors, is usually required.
The final mark can range from a minimum of 66/110
to a maximum of 110/110, with possible honours.
Contents and procedures for the final degree exam
are established by the Teaching Committee of each
Degree Programme.
FREQUENZA - ATTENDANCE Students’ participation
is required for all of the educational activities required
by his/her Degree Programme. Attendance may be
compulsory, recommended or open. Any compulsory
attendance requirements are indicated in the teaching
regulations of the relevant Degree Programme.
IDONEITÀ - QUALIFYING EXAM There are
certain qualifications that may be requested during
matriculation or throughout a student’s academic
career, which are required for the initiation or
completion of a student’s programme of study.
There are linguistic and technical qualification
exams that can be avoided through the completion
of certain university courses, a substitute exam at
the University Language Centre (CLA), or by an
official certification already obtained by the student.
Exemption from a qualifying exam occurs with the
achievement of the corresponding credits (CFU).
LIBRETTO UNIVERSITARIO - GRADE BOOKLET
Contains all verbalized grades from the exams
taken by the student. Students can also see their
grades inside their Personal Area.
MATRICOLA - MATRICULATION NUMBER A number
that identifies each student and that is given when he/
she enrols at the university. It is required for a number
of services such as taking exams, borrowing library
books, etc. It also represents the student’s username
to access the Reserved Area of the university website.
MODULO - COURSE UNIT All courses can be
divided into one or more parts, called “moduli”. At the
end of a module there is usually an exam session.
OBBLIGO FORMATIVO AGGIUNTIVO (OFA) SUPPLEMENTARY EDUCATIONAL DEBT Admission
to a Degree Programme is granted after a specific
set of requirements are met: each degree course
requires the proper knowledge for registration and
successful class attendance. An evaluation of the
individual educational background of each student is
needed to see if they are qualified to enter the selected
programme. If the evaluation is negative, students are
subject to the so-called Supplementary Educational
Debts (OFA), which means that they must fill the
requirements they are missing by participating in
specific activities organised by the University.
PIANO DI STUDIO - PLAN OF STUDY It is the list
of all university courses that the student has taken
or intends to take in their academic career. It also
specifies the courses needed to complete a degree.
The student can fill it out online.
RICEVIMENTO - OFFICE HOURS Every professor
is required to provide his or her students a support
service in regard to their respective teaching
material. Office hours take place at a specific
time and place, indicated by the professor. This
information can be found on a professor’s web page.
SEMESTRE - SEMESTER One of the two parts
into which an academic year is divided. The first
semester starts in September and ends in January,
while the second starts in February and ends in
June. Each semester is divided into two parts called
terms (periodi).
TITOLI ACCADEMICI - ACADEMIC TITLES AND
FINAL QUALIFICATIONS A First Cycle Degree
confers the title of “Dottore”; a Second Cycle
Degree that of “Dottore Magistrale”; the Research
Doctorate that of “Dottore di ricerca”.
TITOLI DOPPI/CONGIUNTI - DOUBLE/JOINT
DEGREES Educational Programmes which provide
an integrated study curriculum established in
conjunction with other international Universities
and mobility periods for students and teaching staff.
After the final examination students achieve two or
more academic qualifications issued by the partner
Universities (Double or Multiple Degree), or a jointly
conferred qualification recognized and validated by
all of the partner Universities (Joint Degree).
TUTORATO - TUTOR SERVICE The Tutor Service
is offered to all students during the entirety of
their student career in order to help them adapt to
and navigate university life. Tutors have different
responsibilities, such as general information and
other more specialized areas; they are chosen
through a rigorous merit-based selection process.
