Constructed in 1583 and named after the builders, Karl and Hans Rosenberger. 1970 bought by the town and became the town hall. B Vogtturm (Kastnerturm) town square It is the oldest building in the town, probably constructed before the year 1000. Named after the businessman Johann Kastner who acquired the building in 1866. It houses the local heritage museum which contains over 2500 exhibits including traditional costumes, furniture and handicrafts, the evolution of the lake, the Alps and skiing, local animals and minerals. C saint Johannes von Nepomuk town square In order to protect themselves from further flooding, the people of Zell built a chapel in 1770 to honour the Saint of Bridges, Saint Nepomuk, in the market square. Saint Johannes Nepomuk (christened Johannes Welfin) was born in Pomuk, near Prague in 1350. He was seen as devout, incorruptible and an excellent preacher. D Town fountain town square In 1855 Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau gave the fountain to tenure. In 1885 it became the property of the Zell am See market town. In 1894 a water pipe was constructed and the fountain taken away. In 1954 the fountain was erected once again with the aid of donations from the local population. Important historical events of the town are depicted on its side panels. E District Council Offices town square A Gothic house constructed before 1500. Bought by the Archbishop Wolf Dietrich in 1606, it became the administrative centre for rural judges. Redesigned between 1841 - 1848. Then in the hands of the treasury from 1867, the federal government from 1928, the German Reich from 1942, the parish of Zell am See from 1943 and finally it became the property of the State of Salzburg in 1971. F ‘ST. HIPPOLYT’ PARISH CHURCH town square Roman construction with Gothic extensions, probably dating from the 11th century. The high alter and side alter, as well as the tricoloured window, date from the neo-Gothic period (around 1900). The church contains a series of ancient, red marble tombstones originating from the year 1372. 6 G Marien Chapel near parish church The Marien Chapel was built, in 1774, on the site of ‘Our Lady of the Forest’ Church which was destroyed by fire in 1770. The most admired cult object of this chapel is a painting of the ‘Ährenkleidmadonna’, called the ‘wheat woman of the Pinzgau’ by the locals. H THE ‘AUSTRIAN FOUNTAIN’ at Grand Hotel Designed by the famous Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The fountain can be admired near the Grand Hotel terrace beside the lake. Hundertwasser dedicated the fountain to the nine provinces of Austria, each represented by a column. I Weyringer’s sculptures Elisabethpark All three sculptures - the eagle (epitomizing earth), capricorn (determination) and the flower (nature) - created by sculptor and painter Johann Weyringer - point out the diversity of the region’s flora and fauna, and the importance of its protection. J Ferry Porsche Congress Center Brucker Bundesstraße 1a It fits smoothly and discreetly into the townscape with its modern architecture and state of the art technical equipment. The floor space of 2,100 m2 provides a suitable setting for every event and it can cater for up to 1,000 people. K Art on the mountain Schmittenhöhe Art and nature become one on the Schmittenhöhe. An all year art exhibition to delight hikers and winter sports fans alike. Discover 24 wooden sculptures along slopes, the hiking paths and in the mountain lake Brunnermais. L Elisabethkapelle (Elisabeth Chapel) Schmittenhöhe Built between 1904 and 1905 in honour of her Royal and Imperial Majesty, Kaiserin Elisabeth. Opened on the 10th anniversary of the Kaiserin’s death from Kardinal Erzbischof Dr. Johannes Katschthaler. M Calvary of Zell am See between centre and Einöd The Calvary was constructed by local artists, as a late Baroque structure, between 1756 and 1770. The statues in the eight chapels convey Christ’s ordeal. N Prielau castle Hofmannsthalstraße This castle was first documented in 1425 and obtained its present form and character in 1560. After a varied history, the castle has been totally restored in the last few years. 7 O Prielau castle Chapel Hofmannsthalstraße The Hl. Dreifaltigkeit Chapel adjoining to the Prielau castle was sanctified by Archbishop Jakob Ernest, Earl of Lichtenstein, in 1745. Ö Herz-Jesu-CHAPEL Mitterbergweg 155 Built in 2012: Family chapel at the Mitterberg with a beautiful panorama P SCulpture park Pocherweg The Sculpture Park in Thumersbach shows examples of contemporary use of materials - stone, wood and metal - in a surprisingly unconventional way. Working on location was a chance to specifically examination the materials on one hand and the location on the other. Q Lohninghof in Thumersbach Seeuferstraße 6 A manor house erected by Archbishop Konrad of Salzburg. It was named ‘Lohninghof’ in 1527 after the lord of the manor, Leonhard Laninger. It is under national trust since 1966. CULTURE WALKING TOUR IN KAPRUN R Jakobskapelle (St. James Chapel) Kaprun castle (see page 15) The castle chapel, dedicated to St. James (the Greater) has been standing on a slope, to the west of the castle, since 1562. The chapel has a simple ground plan typical of the 16th Century. Its contemporary appearance with a so-called ridge turret (a wooden tower jutting up from the roof), square windows and interior design, is due to Barock renovations from 1743-1736. There is an inscription referring to this alteration on the triumphal arch. S Memorial to A Russian buried under the castle Kaprun castle (see page 15) A memorial to the Russian buried under the castle was subsequently placed. T Town Hall Wilhelm Fazokas Straße 20 a The construction of new district offices, opposite the ‘Old Community Hall’, was finished in the early 1950s. The Town Hall was built in 1953 - 1954 and formally opened, with assignments being transfered to it, in 1955. 8 U Anton Thuswaldner Fountain Salzburgerplatz The fountain at the ‘Salzburgerplatz’ was created in 1980 by artist Anton Thuswaldner. The round stone fountain is decorated with typical figures of the artist. V Kaprun Parish Church ’St. Margaretha‘, Power Plant Construction-memorial plaque, memorial site Kirchbichl The Barock church was rebuilt to its contemporary neo Gothic form in 1900. It is dedicated to St. Margarethe and was renovated, inside and out, from 2006 - 2009. The memorial plaque in the cemetery commemorates the many victims during the construction of the power plants. The memorial in the church cemetery was built in remembrance of the many unknown dead of Kaprun. W Meixnerhaus Kirchbichl The Meixnerhaus dates from 1714 - this is written on the ridge of its roof. The cellar appears to be substantially older. The house has belonged to the parish rectory since 1912 and is used for many different parish occasions and events: ranging from choir practices to Christmas singing, from ministrant’s lessons to Advent on Kaprun’s Kirchbichl. X Barbarakapelle (Barbara Chapel) Kirchbichl The Barbara Chapel is a modest construction, rebuilt in 1953 - 1954, according to plans by Fidelius Schmid. The five-sided apse, with a south-facing vestry, adjoins the hip-roofed nave on the eastern side. The ridge turret, with its high pointed spire, is situated over the western front wall. Square windows structure the building. There is a niche with the Station of the Cross, over the north-west entrance, with the mosaic inscription ‘Jesus carries the Cross on his shoulders’. Y Anton Thuswaldner - Sculptures & Pictures former Villa Bürg (parking Sigmund-Thun-Gorge) One can view many sculptures and paintings by this artist in the former Villa Bürg. Numbers and letters are always integrated into Thuswaldner’s sculptures and paintings, so that the artist’s message can be conveyed to the viewers. Z Memorial Site 11.11.2000 valley station Gletscherbahnen Kaprun The memorial site next to the bottom station carparks of the Gletscherbahn cable cars, is an interdenominational room built in rememberance to the disastrous fire in the Kitzsteinhorn tunnel. The interior of the site has the characteristics of a train and is a long, unpretentious concrete building. There is a glass louvre window for each victim, through which light shines. 9 Zell am See 1 Schmittenhöhe www.schmitten.at Enjoy skiing and winter hiking at 2,000 meters or relax on one of the many sunterrace with a magnificent panoramic view over more than thirthy 3,000 metre peaks.
