May 2014 A monthly publication of Temple Beth Ami www.templebethami.org Shalom Bayit שלום בית Vol 31 No 11 Established 1987 From The Rabbi It’s hard to believe another school year is coming to an end. Once again our educators at Temple Beth Ami, led by director Judith Stolnitz have done an amazing job. Our program continues to grow, and is constantly stimulating our students’ minds and inspiring them as they begin their own personal Jewish journeys. This coming year we will be unveiling a completely new dimension to our Sunday and Religious school. Exciting changes to our program and schedule will offer greater flexibility and accommodate the vastly improved educational offerings for our students here in the Santa Clarita Valley. New and returning Family Education programs will also feature prominently in the coming months and we are thrilled to build on a solid foundation while also reaching in new directions. For Adult learning, our Text Study class that meets Tuesday mornings at 9 A.M. continues to grow, in the last months have been studying the Christian Scriptures from a Jewish perspective. Our Adult Education class meets Wednesday evenings at 7 P.M. and is coming up on 14 years of continuous weekly study. Whether it’s reading ancient sacred texts or studying contemporary issues, this class has continued to expand our minds and helped us explore the vast sea of Jewish knowledge. Over the past months we have engaged in an in-depth study of the history of modern Israel. We continue to challenge ourselves with new offerings and possibilities each week. Learning opportunities continue outside the classroom and with special guests coming to our community. To help us learn more about LA Jewish Life, we will be taking a Tour of Wilshire Boulevard Temple on May 6th, from 11 a.m.- 12 p.m. We will be carpooling from Beth Ami, or you can meet us there, but you must reserve your space by calling the TBA office. At TBA we look forward to expanding the educational offerings for people of all ages and backgrounds. As our congregation continues to grow, so will the opportunities to expand the mind, heart and soul. We believe that we will truly be a stronger community when we are all devoted to lifelong learning–a Jewish tradition from Sinai. Shavuot, our next major festival, celebrates “Standing at Sinai.” In ancient times, the Jewish people made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem three times a year to mark pivotal moments in the agricultural cycle: the early spring grain harvest at Passover, the later grain and fruit harvests at Shavuot, and the final autumn ingathering of produce at Sukkot. In rabbinic times, Shavuot became identified with the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. It has long been a custom to inaugurate a Jewish child's education at Shavuot. In many contemporary American Jewish communities, confirmations and graduations take place at this time. There is also the recent practice of celebrating adult B'nai Mitzvah on this day. TBA has celebrated with nearly 50 adults as they have gone through the study and preparation required to read and comment on the Torah. We are putting together an Interest List for Adult B’nai Mitzvah, so please contact the TBA office if you are interested. For fourteen years our community has revitalized an ancient tradition by celebrating Shavuot with the study of our sacred texts. Temple Beth Ami and Congregation Beth Shalom have taken turns hosting an evening of dessert and study on Erev Shavuot. This year we will be hosting the Shavuot Study Session at Temple Beth Ami, on Tuesday evening, June 3rd, beginning at 7:00 PM. We look forward to your participation in this program, a celebration of Jewish learning and community connection. Have a great month filled with great learning, Rabbi Mark Blazer Visit our website for news & events www.templebethami.org Newsletter - May 2014 Temple Beth Ami Page 1 of 17 From The Cantor On Friday night, May 9th, I will be singing songs to celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day. These songs are dedicated to Israel’s 66 years and brings back many memories for me, personally. I was involved in USY in my teens first, as a member, then as a vice-president of my chapter which followed a year as president. I then went on to be on the regional board of Philadelphia Region USY and went to Israel in 1969 with USY Israel Pilgrimage - a trip which changed my life. Since that trip, I’ve been back to Israel nine times and each time I get off the plane, I feel as if I am home. It’s an incredible feeling. I’ve been to other countries and I have to say that when you visit a foreign country you taste different things, you smell different smells, you hear different sounds and you see different sights. In Israel you do all of that plus, you feel something so wonderful, you can’t describe it in words. If you’ve been there, only you know what I mean. If you haven’t been there yet, keep it on your list of to do’s. I guarantee, you won’t be disappointed. Happy 66th Birthday to you, Israel. We love you!! I got to go on this trip with kids from all over the US and Canada and we lived together, prayed together, and ate together and toured Israel together for seven weeks. Our home base was in Jerusalem at a small hotel on the corner of Hanivi’im and Strauss Streets called the “San Remo.” I am still in touch with almost all of those who went on that trip that summer. We even had three reunions where we brought pictures and memorabilia from the trip. I still have the carry-on bag that El Al Airlines gave us as a gift. It’s still filled with napkins from restaurants, ticket stubs from the cable car at Rosh Hanikra, and from the Israeli version of “My Fair Lady” that we saw in Tel Aviv. There are soaps and brochures from different tourist attractions and places from the Bible we visited. I even have a Kellogg’s Corn Flakes box in Hebrew! I also saved a plastic bag that held peaches with “Sde Boker” printed on it. That’s the Kibbutz in the Negev that David Ben Gurion established and lived in until his death in 1973. Newsletter - May 2014 Temple Beth Ami Page 5 of 17 Membership April has been a busy month as we were all getting ready for Passover. We proved that we are a community that can have a great impact and can really come together. The participation of the wonderful Community Passover Seder to Matzah Aisle are great examples of TBA’s community. As many of you came to shop at Ralph’s Stevenson Ranch and made contact with Manager Marc Jacobs as to Passover needs, the results were fantastic and made a huge impact on the store. Overall sales went up by 6% and on top of that he stated that the Ralphs Stevenson Ranch store will now be the Kosher food center store in SCV! (so, if you don’t want to go into the Valley any more!!! - please let Marc Jacobs know what you need!) We are so thankful for the open and receptive nature of Mr. Jacobs and Assistant Manager Ilene Geffen for all of their help as they were absolutely wonderful to work with. He bent over backwards and proved he believes in Jewish community outreach in SCV! Because our community supported their outreach so strongly, Mr. Jacobs has already decided and expressed that there is no question in his mind that Ralph’s Stevenson Ranch will do a community outreach for the High Holidays which will include working with us again! So a big thank you to Mr. Jacobs, Ilene Gelfen and, of course, those that helped with Matzah Aisle: Tracy Blazer (for all of her support and coaching), Jennifer Ihrig and Shawn Monheim - and not to mention – all of YOU! (P.S. Congratulations to Lisa Barton for winning the Mommy & Me Group is now being formed and coming soon! We are getting closer to starting our Mommy & Me Group as we have had several responses! Please contact Catherine, adminsistrator@templebethami.org if you are interested in this group. If we have enough families we will be looking at getting a facilitator. Many fond long lasting friendships can come from a group like this in which you end up sharing life time experiences! (Shawn Monheim and myself have known each other since 1987!) (Whether you are already a member or have been visiting TBA, please let us know if you are interested in Mommy & Me.) Havurah Havdalah – May 10, 2014 @ 6 p.m. at Rena Slabich’s home If you are not already in a Havurah, we hope that you will take advantage of the Havurah Havdalah that Rena Slabich, our Havurah Coordinator is preparing for you to enjoy. A Havurah is a small social group of similar aged families of the temple’s community that enjoy getting together approximately once a month to socialize. Please contact Rena as soon as possible directly at Havurah@templbethami.org that you are interested to come as Rena, a catering maven will be cooking up a fantastic dinner for you and your family to enjoy at the Havdalah at her home! (Whether you are already a member or have been visiting TBA, please let us know if you are interested in coming.) Passover basket!) By now you have received the ballot for new officers and the 2014-2015 budget that was also enclosed. On the bottom left corner of the budget you might have noticed that we now have some new membership categories! After listening to several members, the issue of needing to create new membership categories for young adults and empty nesters was brought up to the Board. Comparison information of categories and pricing from several other temples was reviewed by the Executive Board and the result is that we now have these more economical categories for both groups! Thank you to those of you that expressed your opinions and thank you to the Executive Board for making this available for SUNDAY & HEBREW SCHOOL If your children are about ready to start either Sunday or Hebrew School, you have been visiting Temple Beth Ami, or even have a friend that falls into this category, please note and you are invited to visit our school on the last dates of school as follows: May 29, 2014 at 4:15 p.m. for open house for Hebrew School age children (Grades 4+) and June 1st at 9:00 a.m. (Grades K-3). Kick off for TBA’s All Year Food Campaign – “Never Come Empty Handed” Are you better off today from four years ago? Sounds like the question politicians ask before a large campaign when there are hopes for a large political change - right? I am sure most if not all of you have reflected on the state of your family’s financial well-being over the past few years as to whether things are better or not for you. However, it is well known that many families have been affected by the great recession all over this country and only to find they have gone through a metamorphosis to sustain their family’s needs. It is well known that many people of this congregation have gone through a change – with some now having a change in their employment and/or where they live - some that are now better off and some not. The last newsletter article written about the state of SCV’s Food Pantry was in September 2011 after Wendy Hersh and I attended a social action class which opened our eyes to the severe needs of food pantries now - the tremendous and immediate increased need for the demand for food. At that time the Food Pantry Director Belinda Crawford said “You would not believe the number of faces you see NOW,” as the faces were those of people who had lost jobs. In 2013 the SCV Food Pantry distributed food to 4,788 of unduplicated individuals through the equivalent of 39,553 regular pick-ups. This was actually a slight decrease from the 2009 peak during the economic crisis, yet still a 40% increase from 2006 when they distributed more than 2,500 pounds of food to approximately 60 families each day from the Newhall Food Pantry location and to another 20-90 families seven times a month through their Senior Outreach Mobile Distribution program. After receiving information from our own SCV Food Pantry, we also learned that the demand for food supplies actually starts to go up in the spring with the highest need being up in the summer months. Why? The answer is very simple. Children are home from school and not able to take part in the free and reduced price breakfast and lunch programs offered through the school system. This puts a tremendous strain on the grocery budget, which is already stretched to the limit of clients that need food supply assistance from the food pantries. Newsletter - May 2014 In fact, information reported by the SCV Food Pantry stated that during these months many of their client-children will eat only one meal a day or a parent will “do without” so that there is enough food for their children. The SCV Food Pantry was established in 1986 with the mission to alleviate hunger throughout SCV. The work for trying to achieve this goal is done by volunteers – like Esther and Alan Sternin of our Temple who work there every week! The SCV Food Pantry is located at 24133 Railroad Avenue in Old town Newhall, open Monday-Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and the first Saturday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon; also the third Friday of the month for senior citizen clients from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and distribute food at seven locations throughout SCV by their Senior Outreach Mobile Distribution Program. So what are some of the mitzvahs you can do? Never come empty handed each time you come to temple – whether it is coming to an adult education class, services, a meeting or dropping your children off for Hebrew and Sunday school, please do something that helps you remember to bring canned food items to TBA and put them into the Food Pantry Bin in the sanctuary to help with the increased food demand - even if is just one can of food each time – that will be a help! Having your children become a participant in the early food campaign will be a healthy mitzvah experience of learning why this is such an important mitzvah and will be on Temple Beth Ami’s school’s list of mitzvahs. If you have time volunteer at the food pantry! Here is what is needed: high protein rich foods: tuna, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, canned meats and beans. Other items needed: canned fruits, vegetables, tomatoes, pasta, dried soups, rice, beans, cereal & dry milk. Personal care items: toothpaste & brushes, soap, shaving cream. We have included a form with this newsletter you can use for making donations directly to the Food Pantry as well. Food Pantry’s Director, Belinda Crawford can be contacted directly at: executive_director@scvfoodpantry.org. To contact the SCV Food Pantry: 661-255-9078; info@scvfoodpantry.org; www.scvfoodpantry.org. I hope your family is better off today. Thank you, Francine G.
