Der Vorstand der POLYTEC HOLDING AG wird zukünftig durch die Vorstandsressorts Business Development sowie Vertrieb, Marketing und Entwicklung erweitert. Die Veränderungen erfolgen mit Wirkung zum 01. Jänner 2014. Markus Huemer will be appointed as new member of the executive board with responsibility for business development and as vice chairman of the board of POLYTEC HOLDING AG. Mrs. Alice Godderidge will also join the executive board, taking over responsibility for sales, marketing and engineering. Das Redaktionsteam befragte Herrn Friedrich Huemer, Gründer, Kernaktionär und CEO, zum aktuellen Thema: What do you think about the recent appointed extension of the board of the POLYTEC HOLDING AG? These appointments reflect the considerably enlarged scope of responsibilities assumed by both my son Markus and Alice Godderidge over the last few years. They will now exercise these responsibilities in line with their executive functions at the board level, thus contributing significantly to the implementation of the company’s strategic and operative targets. What do you think about the future role of your son Markus within the POLYTEC GROUP? Within his position as CBDO he will be responsible for the strategic further development of the group and will define priorities of superior investments for the different business areas. Moreover, his responsibility will include the realization of strategic and organizational projects across all business units as well as the overall coordination of our M&A activities. Anyway, since 2012, he has acted as vice president business development and is well acquainted with these tasks. Markus has not only demonstrated extensive specialist know-how and great commitment in a number of business areas but he has also showed great dedication during the crisis years of 2008 and 2009. He is therefore best qualified to become vice chairman of the board. In addition, the appointment of Mrs. Godderidge can be described as a real POLYTEC success story. Definitely, Alice Godderidge who started her career at POLYTEC as project manager at the business site in Hörsching back in 1999, has also proved her exemplary management skills and capabilities in her capacity as assistant to the board of directors in the area of sales prior to her appointment to vice president sales & engineering in 2012. ALICE GODDERIDGE AND MARKUS HUEMER K. PEINBAUER, POLYTEC HOLDING AG 04 “I‘m enthusiastic about the automotive world since I first peeked into the industry as a student and this passion still remains. For POLYTEC I see an exciting f uture in a competitive environment of the a utomotive industry, globalization and the challenges of the non-automotive world.” ALICE GODDERIDGE VORSTAND DER POLYTEC GROUP EXECUTIVE BOARD OF THE POLYTEC GROUP as of 1st of January 2014 ab 1. Here, mainly technical parts for the engine compartment (automotive industry) and modules for home appliances are being manufactured using injection moulding. In order to better meet customer demands going forward, the production area has been expanded by 1,300 m2. The fact that POLYTEC PLASTICS is extending its product portfolio to include the development and manufacturing of non-automotive products breathes fresh life into the plant’s internal reconstruction and restructuring measures. The new production hall, where high-value injection-moulded components for washing machine switch panels are manufactured, is without doubt the masterpiece of the entire business premises. Thus, the so-called “white goods” are finally finding their way to Lohne. NEW OFFICE BUILDING The new production hall, in which up to 20 injection moulding machines have sufficient space, is connected to the assembly hall via a transport tunnel. Due to the fragile surface structure of the switch panels, this transport tunnel has been equipped with an integrated 06 conveyor system, which guarantees a smooth process chain. In addition to the new manufacturing hall, a modern two-storey office building was built, where the launch management, controlling, IT, human resources as well as the plant, sales and business management departments have found new space for their ideas. The engineering unit particularly benefitted from these workplace optimization measures for POLYTEC staff members, having registered a massive increase in its headcount following a high order intake for new projects. Fundamental units such as testing, predevelopment and engineering were considerably upgraded through the reconfiguration of office space. And that is not all: Concrete plans for additional reconstruction measures are already underway in Lohne. A former storage facility will be predominantly used for the manufacturing of oil separation systems in future. In this hall, several production islands with hot gas welding equipment are being installed. You will learn more about this advanced technology in the article about the new DELA venting system starting on page 20. “Our team as well as our facilities were further expanded after embarking on new product fields and technologies. We are proud of our 100 employee strong engineering and sales force.” L. OLBERDING, POLYTEC PLASTICS 07 NEWS UNDER THE HOOD — DEVELOPMENT EXPERTISE IN AIR FILTERS crucial role in this context. For this purpose, the innovative development team of POLYTEC PLASTICS has joined forces with M.TEC GmbH, an engineering company for product development, to build up its know-how in the area of air filtration systems in line with market requirements. In a joint effort, all technically relevant aspects relating to air filters were systematically elaborated. Different trial methods and simulation technologies were combined to give rise to an innovative design methodology aimed at securing development goals and generating high-performance air filters in line with the high POSITION OF THE AIR FILTER SYSTEM IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT In the automotive industry, air filters have to meet constantly higher demands in terms of filtration quality and minimizing pressure drop. This leads in turn to an increase in their useful life and consequently in longer filter service intervals. As a result, electronic and safety components are playing an increasingly 08 expectations of today’s automotive industry. To meet customer demands in the area of fluid dynamics simulation, the company acquired the high-performance CDF (computational fluid dynamics) software Star CCM+. This will enable POLYTEC to better fulfill individual customer requirements, while at the same time generating sustainable added value for customers. After systematically dealing with the simulation fundamentals, the POLYTEC GROUP makes investments for the future: The company is currently building its own fluid dynamics test rings to be able to carry out in-house fluid dynamics and air filter performance simulations (dust tests and measurements of pressure drops). POLYTEC’s core competences in latest plastic requirements and processing techniques in line with its manufacturing know-how and compliance with high-quality standards round off the company’s newly acquired expertise in the area of air filters. The POLYTEC GROUP is therefore best positioned to be able to develop and deliver innovative air filtration solutions that meet future industry demands. For the realization of this project, 7 different POLYTEC production plants along with a wide range of different technologies are involved: POLYTEC COMPOUNDS, based in Gochsheim in Baden-Würt- temberg (Germany), is in charge of supplying SMC semi-finished materials to the moulding plant of POLYTEC COMPOSITES, which is located close by, where both front panels and bumper systems are produced. The POLYTEC PLASTICS production plant in Ebensee (Austria) is responsible for the manufacturing of large-sized injection moulded components such as masks, front grilles and corner panels, whereas POLYTEC PLASTICS in Idstein mainly specializes in the manufacturing of small-sized injection moulded components such as the upper and lower grilles, the towing lid, the becel and the cover for the headlight washers. POLYTEC CAR STYLING, based in Hörsching (Austria) develops and produces assembly devices for this project, while POLYTEC CAR STYLING in Schoten (Belgium) delivers load carriers for both engine hoods. In a further step, the majority of the manufactured components are transported to P OLYTEC INDUSTRIELACKIERUNGEN in Rastatt (Germany), where top coating of all SMC parts and corner panels made of PC/ABS is carried out in over 360 different colours and all the necessary components are assembled. In addition to coordinating the production of all components manufactured by POLYTEC as well as supplying all necessary parts for final assembly such as gas springs, hinges, clips and bolts, POLYTEC INDUSTRIELACKIERUNGEN is also responsible for the just-in-sequence delivery of the components to the Volvo production plants in Blainville (France) and Gent (Belgium). The fact that extremely short time frames and tight production schedules have to be met shows how demanding this complex project can be. Starting from calendar week 49, POLYTEC will also begin serial production of plastic components for the Brazilian Volvo VM model. A. BADER, POLYTEC COMPOSITES P. DRABEK, POLYTEC COMPOSITES POLYTEC EMPLOYEE AT ASSEMBLY STATION In mid September 2013, the first new medium-duty Volvo trucks, featuring a total of 26 components produced by the POLYTEC GROUP, rolled off the production line. Following the award of the project “Medium Duty Renewal“ for the front facelift of the Volvo FE and FL in May 2011, the POLYTEC GROUP succeeded for the first time to combine the production of both SMC and injection moulded components as well as their top coating and final assembly in a single project. With its 220 HP, breathtaking driving performance and extremely sporty design, the Polo WRC is one of the most powerful road-going versions of its kind. The rear spoiler of this limited version, which will be produced in just 2,500 units, has been developed and manufactured by POLYTEC CAR STYLING in record time. VW’s decision to take part in a World Rally Championship (WRC) for the first time in almost 40 years has paid off: Sébastien Ogier won the World Rally Championship (WRC) drivers’ title, while Volkswagen Motorsport grabbed the WRC manufacturers’ championship title, knocking Citroen off the throne. However, before joining the race, Volkswagen was required, in accordance with FIA regulations, to build at least 2,500 road-going models to homologate the Polo WRC rally car. For this purpose and within an extremely short time frame, POLYTEC CAR STYLING further developed a rear spoiler made of reinforced integral foam, which had been specifically designed for VW back in 2010, to be used for this limited series. It was developed in close coor- 14 dination with the company’s VW counterparts responsible for development and quality at the production plants in Wolfsburg (Germany) and Pamplona (Spain). EURO mill. However, in the automotive business this development varied according to unit segment. In the passenger car business, total sales increased by 4.5% to EUR 71.7 million in the period under review compared to the same period of the previous year, whereas sales in the commercial vehicle business dropped by 13.0% to EUR 34.2 million. In both, this positive and negative development - compared to the same period of the previous year - was mainly attributable to a significant change in tooling sales. Part sales in both the passenger car and commercial vehicle segments matched the previous year’s level (Q3 2012). The non-automotive business showed a different picture. In the period under review, total sales registered a significant drop of 12.3% mainly due to the downward trend in the garden furniture business, as reported in the interim report for the first half 2013, as well as to sales declines related to a major customer (transport boxes). This drop in sales in the non-automotive business had a negative PASSION CREATES INNOVATION impact on Group’s results for the third quarter 2013. Restructuring costs totaling EUR 1.2 million, which are shown separately in the profit and loss statement, refer to expenses in connection with the phase-out of garden furniture production at the business site in Ebensee. For further details please refer to the explanation provided in the Notes. EBIT before restructuring costs declined by EUR 2.1 million to EUR 4.8 million in the third quarter 2013. This corresponds to an EBIT margin of 4.1%. As in the previous quarter – see explanation in the interim report for the first half 2013 - higher than planned operating expenses in connection with several injection molding projects and related material and personnel cost overruns had a negative impact on group results. The tax ratio of the POLYTEC GROUP amounted to 21.2% for the first nine months 2013. All in all, taking one-off effects into account, the POLYTEC GROUP reported a net result of EUR 10.0 million in the period under review. This corresponds to earnings per share of EUR 0.43 compared to EUR 0.75 in the previous year. In the period under review, POLYTEC GROUP’s shareholders’ equity increased by 0.8% to EUR 133.3 million compared to the balance sheet date as of December 31, 2012. The equity ratio decreased to 49.7% (June 30, 2013: 50.4%) due to an increase of the balance sheet total of 3.1%. Furthermore, it should be noted that the equity ratio reported in the Annual Report 2012 had to be reduced from its original value of 51.4% to 50.8% due to the changes made in the accounting and evaluation methods in connection with the retrospective application of the revised IAS 19 standard to comparative periods (corridor method). In the third quarter 2013, a total of 31,000 shares for a total value of EUR 0.2 million were bought back via the stock exchange. The net working capital increased by EUR 12.8 million in the period under review compared to the balance sheet date as of December 31, 2012 and remained almost unchanged compared to the balance sheet date as of June 30, 2013. The intra-year increase is mainly attributable to the increase in receivables from construction contracts in connection with the rising number of injection moulding projects. Net financial assets amounted to EUR 0.1 million as of September 30, 2013. The decline in financial assets in the period under review is mainly attributable to the significant increase in receivables from construction contracts mentioned above and the repayment of group loans, in addition to the company’s capital expenditures, which amounted to EUR 12.6 million in the first nine months 2013, and to dividend payments totaling EUR 7.7 million. The cylinder head cover is on top of the cylinder head, covering the valve train of the engine, including an integrated oil separating and pressure control device. In cooperation with the P OLYTEC PLASTICS development centre in Lohne (Germany) a new production concept focusing on lean management has been developed. All major process steps, including 100 % final testing of all components, are fully automated to secure all relevant parameters. The manufacturing process begins with two parallel operating injection moulding machines, which produce both the overall structure and the main body of the cylinder head covers. Final finishing of all parts takes place only after pre-assembly of the pressure control and oil-separating device, which is performed by a 6-axis robot. The DELA venting system is welded at three different points using hot gas welding. The oil separator housing is divided into three sections to integrate the wide range of different functionalities it fulfills and, thus, has two weld seams. Moreover, the housing cover is also joined at two different points using hot gas welding. The welding process starts when the heating element is inserted into the heating up position (step 2). In the subsequent heating phase, the joining zones are heated using radiated heat. This takes place by means of heat transfer from the heating element to the weld seam through a hot protective gas flow (step 3). PASSION CREATES INNOVATION EOP 2017 (est.) Material PA 66 GF 30, PA 6 GF 30 Location Lohne, Germany DAS HEIßGASSCHWEIßVERFAHREN HOT GAS WELDING Once the heating element has left its processing position, the actual joining process is finalized by closing the upper feeder unit with the lower one (step 4). The hot gas welding process prevents the accumulation of small particles inside the product after welding. This is ensured by the strong adhesion of the weld seam to the joining zone. Furthermore complex three-dimensional weld patterns can be realized with this method. This was achieved by integrating a throttle into the venting valve. In close cooperation with the STEP 2 The therefore by POLYTEC developed DELA venting system encompasses seven integrated functional areas (five non-return valves and two separator systems) and is composed of 55 different components, which are joined together using a hot gas welding method. The DELA venting system features separate full load and partial load venting lines. This separation allows for integrated crankcase ventilation, while eliminating the need for a pressure control valve. This, in turn, leads to lower costs resulting from weight reduction and to more space within the engine compartment. However, this places higher demands on the non-return valve, which must achieve a certain leakage rate, allowing oil to flow out of the crankcase but preventing it from being su- cked in from outside. Following intensive analysis an ideal solution was found. The oil separator of the partial load venting line was subject to equally inten- STEP 1 With the introduction of the new 3.0-L-V6 gasoline engine, the proven V6 series of Mercedes-Benz had been expanded with another variant that combines highest standards of comfort with superior performance and efficiency. We are talking about the so-called Engine Soft Cover, an engine block cover made of PUR soft foam and produced in one single step, which will be deployed in all gasoline powered Volvo vehicles in the future, replacing the conventional injection moulded cover. At POLYTEC CAR STYLING in Hörsching (Austria) four covers, which differ in form and finish, have been developed. The applied material has been adjusted to meet the high demands of the automotive industry based on month-long, close collaboration with the raw material producers. The resulting raw material compound fulfills the most demanding conditions in the engine compartment, easily withstanding temperature fluctuations between -40°C and +150°C. In addition to this, the applied technology, a PUR foaming process, enables a wide wall thickness range. The components, that are characterized by both a visually appealing surface and an excellent sound absorption, can be produced via a one-shot process meaning in one single work step. Compared to the covers deployed so far, the benefits offered by the new soft covers are 22 clearly obvious: considerable weight reduction (thanks to the low density of only 135g/dm3), a better HIC (head impact criteria), a significant minimization of tooling investments as well as the elimination of a process step compared to the conventional two-part injection moulding process. Furthermore, improved sound insulation represents a decisive added value for end-consumers. Thanks to the open cell structure, disturbing engine noises are absorbed by the soft cover, reducing their acoustic impact on the passenger compartment, while resulting in higher driving comfort. Within only 12 months, the existing production area in Hörsching has been adjusted accordingly and equipped with a new production line for a total value of EUR 1 million. In addition to the purchase of new production facilities, this investment includes a fully automated robot system, which will operate 8 foaming machines running in series. Along with the foaming equipment, the production line also encompasses the assembly of fixing components and the manufacturer logo. Thanks to the great dedication and commitment of all staff members involved and the future-oriented decision to invest in a new manufacturing technology, P OLYTEC CAR STYLING has been able to bring a series-production project to fruition with an annual production volume of over 290,000 units. Therefore, going forward, the Hörsching-based production plant, which is renowned for its professional project management in exterior car accessories, will also build its reputation as a series supplier of engine compartment parts for the automotive industry. POLYTEC Kunden profitieren von Synergien, die wir aus der engen Zusammenarbeit unserer drei Geschäftsbereiche PLASTICS, FULL SPEED AHEAD: POLYTEC AT THE IAA Roughly 900,000 visitors attended this year’s 65th International Automobile Exhibition (IAA), which took place between 12 and 22 September in Frankfurt and showcased innovations from 1,100 exhibitors. Looking around at the greatest motor show in the world, two important themes could be identified: the digital revolution in the automotive industry and the ubiquitous trend towards electric mobility and lightweight construction. Since almost all business units of the POLYTEC GROUP are extensively dealing with lightweight construction, our comeback at this year’s show, after a break of 6 years, was a logical step for us. As quality and innovation leader, we used the IAA as a platform to show to both existing and potential customers our most important asset: our wide range of technological applications. Injection moulding technologies are just one of our core competences. We also focus on the painting and further processing of fibre composite and polyurethane materials in a variety of forms, as well as on the development of individual 24 solutions for trucks, passengers cars, off-road vehicles and motorcycles. Following initial specialization in the production of polyurethane components for industrial applications, the POLYTEC GROUP has initially become an automotive sub-supplier with an affinity for plastics in the course of the last 27 years. More recently, we have built our reputation as a plastics processor with a special automotive expertise. In the meantime, the non-automotive area has also become a strong pillar of the company business. In addition, POLYTEC customers profit from the synergies we achieve through the close cooperation between our three business units: PLASTICS, COMPOSITES and CAR STYLING. Our holistic corporate structure is more than just the sum of its parts, since only those who employ networked thinking can offer the best solutions. With our POLYTEC showcar we presented an array of 50 components produced with different technologies for vehicle exteriors and interiors as well as for the engine compartment at this year’s event. The POLYTEC show car embodies our extensive know-how and presents plastic parts from the PLASTICS (injection moulding), COMPOSITES (fibre reinforced plastic materials) and CAR STYLING (PUR, blow moulded parts) business units. Innovative lightweight design concepts for different plastics technologies met with particularly great interest. Compared with steel and aluminum products, these lightweight counterparts enable, for instance, a 30 % weight reduction based on carbon fibre reinforcement. The networked competence of the business unit CAR STYLING became visible using the example of front bumpers and rear spoilers for Jaguar. Dear business partners, shareholders and staff members, As ever, I would like to take the opportunity provided by the last issue of POLYTEC WORLD to thank you for your trust and good collaboration amidst a persistently challenging market environment. FRIEDRICH HUEMER, CEO As expected, 2013 has indeed turned out to be a very exciting business year. Meeting the demands of an extremely volatile European market with great flexibility is and will continue to be one of the major tasks of each and every supplier going forward, a challenge that we are also tackling with success. In 2013, we have also been confronted with issues such as efficiency optimization, the company’s globalization trend towards China as well as the development of interesting new projects. Despite the difficult framework conditions we have had to face, mainly due to a challenging market environment, we coped well in 2013. We are therefore looking forward to the new business year and the tasks we have to accomplish with great motivation! On this positive note, I wish you and your families a very merry Christmas and a healthy and successful New Year 2014! Friedrich Huemer PASSIONATE ABOUT DOING GOOD In the most festive time of the year we should not forget those less fortunate than us. Since our POLYTEC plant in Wolmirstedt (Germany) was affected by floods this year, we take the opportunity to donate our Christmas budget for victims of the flood in Germany and Austria. Therefore we will deliberately refrain from giving out Christmas presents and thank you for your understanding.
