Also, was ist seid meinem letzten Bericht passiert? Phil Neidert Präsident President’s Report Well, May is here and what a beautiful spring we are having. We here have certainly been blessed by the weatherman, and when you look all around us in all areas of our world, we surely must feel grateful. Will it carry on, let’s hope so. OK, so what went on since my last report? Well, on March 27th, Betty and I attended the Spring Dance at the German-Canadian Hunting & Fishing Club and the crowning of their Miss for 2010. She is Samantha Koreck, and what a surprise we got when we found out that she is the niece of our on very first “Miss Schwaben 1958”, Edith Koreck (Edith Krause). We had a Schwager, Eva Passed away suddenly on April 13, 2010 at Grand River Hospital, 4 days short of her 88th birthday. Eva will be missed by Hedi, Hans and Mary and many more good and dear friends. very nice conversation with our former “Miss”. She has given us some pictures and I have invited her to visit with us. Thank you to President, Dave Mendler, and his wife Jennifer, for a very enjoyable evening. On April 10th Betty and I were invited to Alpine Club for their Anniversary and the crowning of their Miss for 2010. This year the lights stayed on, no candles needed. The new “Miss Alpine” for 2010 is Amanda Harold, the granddaughter of Helmut and Edith Harold. Thank you very much President, Bill Poje, and Tania, for the invitation and your hospitality, Betty and I had a great time. Next up “Landestrachtenfest”. Here I am going to be short and brief. I know others will be sharing information and comments and so as not to duplicate, let me just say it was “Wunderbar”. If you did not attend, you missed out on a beautiful celebration. In closing, I wish all Mothers a very happy and pleasant Mother’s Day and I look forward to greeting you all at our Mother’s Day Luncheon. When you get that many Schwobs in one place, you just know it’s going to be a good time! On Saturday, April 17, 2010, the Schwaben Club hosted the annual Landestrachtenfest der Donauschwaben. With representatives from almost all the Clubs, and dance groups from only two of them; it was still a wonderful evening. Although the day technically began with a Landesverband committee meeting in the afternoon, the real event started when the doors opened at 5pm. As the guests poured in, representation from Kitchener and Toronto was plentiful. Windsor was represented by 2 committee members and their spouses, but unfortunately no one was able to come from Leamington. Miss Schwaben signaled the start of dinner with grace, and then the meal was served. Once again, the kitchen of the Schwaben Club came through with flying colours. The schnitzel and roast beef were fantastic, no knife was even necessary. The mashed potatoes were great, even with the gravy’s odd yet interesting smoky Heffner Lexus, Heffner Toyota ... moving forward ... our family continues to grow, Be a part of it! flavour. The Schwaben beans were delicious of course, as were the other vegetables. The cheesecake that finished of the meal was also wonderful. Then came the first two of the evening’s dance group performances: the Toronto and Kitchener Kindergruppen. These young children are always a pleasure to watch. Next on the program was the Grand March; members from all over lined up and marched throughout the Main hall. After brief speeches from Phil Neidert, Hans Schaadt, Katie Braunsar, and John Werner, service pins were handed out to people who have contributed to the furthering of the Donauschwaben culture. The recipients were Katie Braunsar, Lisa Schaadt, and Peter Speckner. Finally, the presentations were over, and the parade participants sat down while the band started up. The entertainment was provided by the Transylvania Hofbräu band. 27 musicians playing various brass instruments can really make some beautiful music. The next dance performances were the Toronto and Kitchener Jugendgruppen and the Schwaben Dancers. The youth groups were exciting, especially the new dance from our own Jugendgruppe. The Schwaben Dancers ended their performance with their infamous “Oma” dance, although the identity of the Oma is still a mystery (she was very good though!) After some more dancing to the Hofbräu band, the final two performances took place. The Heimat Gruppe from Toronto glided across the dancefloor with grace, while the Donau Dancers rocked it with their new `Hubert` dance. All in all, a wonderful evening right through. With all that fun now behind us, we look forward to next year`s Landestrachtenfest in Toronto. Peter Speckner Cultural Director Proudly Partnering with our community since 1960 3121 King Street East Kitchener, Ontario N2A 1B1 (519) 748-9666 www.heffner.ca Kindergruppe and Jugendgruppe This was the first time our Kindergruppe/ Jugendgruppe attended Landestrachtenfest and how lucky for us it was hosted by our own Club in Kitchener this year! All the children did a fantastic job. It was nice to watch the other dance groups from Toronto and hope they too enjoyed the night as well. We look forward to next year! Our groups continue to grow but we are always happy to welcome new dancers! As our dance year is coming to an end we have a few more performances and continue to prepare for Tag der Donauschwaben in Philadelphia. Wishing all our Mom’s, Oma’s and Aunt’s a Happy Mother’s Day! Lisa Schaadt Kindergruppe/Jugendgruppe President Frauengruppe Well Trachtenfest is over! What a wonderful evening it was! There was excellent food, many traditional trachts and good music. We were also well entertained by our and the Toronto dancers. We would like to thank everyone for their generous contributions of prizes. Our next event is Mother’s Day luncheon on May 2. Be sure to join us and bring the whole family. We had a very good turnout for our group picture last week. It was nice to see that we still have a good number of members. It would be nice to see that many out every month. Susan Cook Schwaben Club Frauengruppe www.pillers.com Verband News On Sunday April 18th, 2010 the elections for the Board of Directors of the Alliance of the Danube Swabians of Canada was held. We look forward to supporting and working with the new Board in the upcoming year. This is a quote taken from an e-mail I received from the new Verband President, Anton Bauman just after Landestrachtenfest which I would like to share. “Inge and I enjoyed the Landestrachten Fest, I was especially impressed with the dancing groups from Kitchener. At the moment we can all learn from this achievement.” Monica Anstett Vice President:Schwaben Club President Vice-President General Secretary: Protokoll Secretary Treasurer Cultural Director:Ladies Auxillary President Jugendleiterin Archivist Auditor Auditor Mr. Anton Bauman Mr. Joe Groh Toronto Kitchener Mr. Neil Hoffman Mrs. Lori Saler Kitchener Toronto Mrs. Sheri Thompson Miss Cheyenne Kertes Ms. Annie Zimmer Mr. Tony Dama Mr. George Kraehling Kitchener Toronto Leamington Leamington Kitchener 7 8 Schwaben Club 1668 King Street East Kitchener, Ontario, Canada N2G 2P1 www.kitchenerschwabenclub.com
