Price level C covers the medium travel range: It is valid in two
neighbouring so-called central tariff zones (corresponding to a
town/city or several smaller cities and communities) and as a rule
in all adjacent tariff zones – and sometimes even further.
As a rule, trips that go beyond price level C are covered by price
level D. This is divided up into two regions: the North Region and
the South Region.
The tickets of price level E are valid throughout the VRR region.

Many ways to travel
RegionalExpress (RE – regional express trains)
The RegionalExpress trains allow you to travel longer
distances between cities quickly and comfortably.
RegionalBahn (RB – regional trains)
RegionalBahn trains usually connect cities with the
surrounding areas and stop at all stations.
S-Bahn (S – suburban trains)
The S-Bahn routes form the backbone of the rail network
in the VRR and serve all stations along the main traffic
corridors.
Stadtbahn (U – underground)
Stadtbahn trains run at high frequencies and travel below
ground or on designated tracks above ground, which makes
them a great way to get around town without being slowed
down by traffic. The scenic Schwebebahn (suspended train)
in Wuppertal, the fully automated SkyTrain at the Düsseldorf
Airport and the H-Bahn in Dortmund are also part of the
Stadtbahn system.
SchnellBus (SB – express bus) SchnellBus lines run
SchnellBus lines run wherever train tracks are not available
and connect central locations as directly as possible.
CityExpress (CE – city express bus)
CityExpress buses give you a way to travel quickly within
cities. They run at high frequencies and only service select
bus stops.
Straßenbahn (tram)
Trams complement Stadtbahn lines.
7
Bus
Buses are an ideal way to get around within cities and
adjacent regions. A closely spaced network of bus stops
makes sure you’ll never have to walk too far. Some regional
bus lines may have special designations such as “Stadtlinie”
(city line) or “Ortsbus” (O – local bus).
NachtExpress (NE – night express) NachtExpress buses
and regional trains help you get around after hours – along
with regular RegionalExpress, Regional-Bahn and S-Bahn
trains. As a rule, NachtExpress vehicles run every 60 minutes
at weekends and before holidays, departing from central
train stations and bus malls and going to the outlying areas
or neighbouring cities; In some cities NachtExpress buses
and trains run every night.
TaxiBus
is a taxi that always follows a set route:
they run on a predetermined timetable just like a regular
bus. TaxiBuses can be used with valid VRR tickets that can
be purchased from the driver. How-ever, a TaxiBus must be
ordered no later than 30 minutes prior to the desired time
of departure. Please contact your local public transport
company for additional information.
AnrufSammelTaxi (AST – collective call taxi)
In most rural and suburban areas, ASTs depart from AST stops
at scheduled times. Customers can select the destination
within a certain service area; ASTs do not follow fixed routes,
so you can have the driver drop you off right at your front
door. ASTs must be ordered by phone at least 30 minutes
prior to departure. A special AST ticket is required. This ticket
only costs slightly more than a VRR ticket.
Please note that AST tickets do not allow you to use any
other VRR services.
8
Special services expand the range on offer
Special services for events, museum visits, shipping lines,
community bus routes, car sharing offers and other flexible
additions to local public transport can be found in almost
all towns and cities of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr.
Please note while you are travelling, our drivers will be
pleased to provide you with assistance.
Timetable books
Most of our timetables are published annually as convenient
books – either in January or in June. They contain all the
timetables and information you need to travel with VRR.
Some timetable books also contain detailed maps to help
you get around.

Journey planner: online or on your mobile
In addition to the timetable books, almost all transport
companies offer up-to-date timetable information on their
internet sites.
If you have a specific destination in mind, it is best to use our
Electronic Timetable Information at www.vrr.de. Here you can
quickly and conveniently find your travel information, including the bus and tram stop timetables, departure monitors,
route maps, town and city map sections and information for
people of limited mobility.
The timetable app
With this free app you can also quickly and easily use all
functions of the Electronic Timetable Information while you
are out and about with your Android mobile phone or iPhone.
On the following pages you can find further useful information about our tickets and their services. Information is
of course also available from the customer service centre
of your transport company (see overleaf) or the customer
service hotline 0 180 3/50 40 30 (landline charge €0.09/
minute; mobile phone max. €0.42/minute).

We’ll keep you entertained
Buses, trains and trams are the ideal way to get to museums
or sporting events without having to waste time looking for
a parking space. This is why VRR offers a special service for
public transport customers: We issue FreizeitLust, an event
calendar with great tours and destinations in the VRR area.
The printed issue is complemented by our email newsletter
FreizeitLust online which offers current recreational information and can be ordered online. In addition, you can find
recreational ideas at the VRR event calendar at www.vrr.de.
A subscription that pays off
Customers with a subscription are rewarded by the network with the AboLust
for their loyalty to bus and rail. Twice a
year they receive the AboLust booklet by
mail – and with it a wide range of extras
and special offers for various leisure destinations. In line with the wide variety of
subscription tickets available, there is
also the AboLust with various offers for
different age groups.
KombiTicket
When you visit trade shows,
concerts, sporting events, amusement parks or similar venues,
check to see if your admission ticket has the KombiTicket logo.
If you see it, you’ll save money: KombiTickets include the VRR
fare to the venue and back. KombiTickets are available at ticket
sales offices, from the venue’s organiser and all sales counters
with the KombiTicket logo.
21

Competition for Better Services
In recent years, competition has begun to play an important
role in regional train traffic : VRR bids out train routes in a
European competition process and selects the competitor
with the most attractive offer. Quality is an important factor
in the competitor selection process – to the benefit of our
customers. All contracts awarded to rail companies contain
quality standards. Rail companies that do not meet these
standards have to pay penalties. In order to guarantee
compliance with these standards, the VRR has developed a
modern quality control system which carries out objective
measurements of the service quality, including the opinion
of customers by means of regular satisfaction surveys. This
system is part of our contract with the railroad companies
and ensures that the Deutsche Bahn and the various private
companies such as Regiobahn, Abellio, NordWestBahn and
Keolis Deutschland have a vested interest in providing topnotch service to you.
Customers help ensure quality
Our own customers play an active role in ensuring that our
quality standards are met. They help us and our transport
companies improve our services. In recent years, over 300
volunteer LinienScouts (line scouts) have been keeping us
informed about punctuality, safety, service and comfort.
By giving us the customers’ point of view, LinienScouts
supply important indications about where our services can
be improved. This means that volunteers play a vital role in
making our quality control offensive successful.
“Station Chaperones"
Well-kept train stations don’t just make a trip more enjoyable, they also make the surrounding area more attractive.
That’s why volunteer “Bahnhofspaten” (station chaperones)
keep a watchful eye over “their” station. They take responsibility and keep their station attractive by reporting any
damage to the responsible rail company. In this way dirt or
damage can be quickly removed. Around 70 stations in the
VRR are looked after by “station chaperones”.

Travel safely
The Zentralstelle für Regionales Sicherheitsmanagement
und Prävention (ZeRP) (central office for security and prevention) is a cooperation association set up on 19 October
1998 by the Ministry of the Interior for the State of North
Rhine-Westphalia in the pilot area of Bochum, Gelsenkirchen
and Dortmund.
The cooperation association, which has its headquarters at
the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr in Gelsenkirchen, now has
30 partners.
An important part of the cooperation association is the
regular exchange of local and regional information and
experience concerning safety-related events. In a central
database all of the information and occurrences relating to
graffiti/vandalism and nuisance are stored.
On this basis the partners can draw up situation reports
and thereby identify problems at an early stage. Similarly,
the database represents the foundation for compiling prevention strategies and deployment concepts by the local
law enforcement partners.

the age of 15 the adult rates apply. Children under the age of
six travel free of charge if accompanied. There is no charge
for prams in the VRR.
Accompaniment
