Wie viele Karibikinseln zeigt auch die
britische Kronkolonie Anguilla eine ganz
individuelle Charakteristik. Dem Tourismus öffnete man sich hier mit großer
Behutsamkeit. So verbietet ein Gesetz,
Häuser zu bauen, die höher als eine
Palme sind. Ein Resort an der Südwestküste nahm Rücksicht auf die Identität
der Insel und erschuf zugleich eine zauberhafte eigene Welt.
Like many Caribbean islands the British
Crown colony of Anguilla has its own
distinct features. An extremely cautions
approach has been adopted in opening
up to tourism. For instance the law
prohibits houses being built any higher
than a palm tree. A resort on the west
coast has taken the island’s particular
identity into consideration and created a
delightfully individual world of its own.

Rain hardly ever falls on Anguilla.
This is quite evident from the vegetation: thin woods of dry climate
trees, limestone hills, only sparse
plant life on the dunes along the
fine sandy coast. There is one exception however, the narrow strip of

housed in unprepossessing, flat,
utilitarian stone dwellings. But there
is one exception. The gardens at
Maundays Bay surrounds fabulous
residences as if a magician had
transported them from North Africa
and set them down in the Caribbean. A chain of eighteen Moorish
villas gleaming white in the tropical
sunlight make up Cap Juluca,
an isle on an island.
Yet it would be wrong to regard this
luxurious holiday paradise (featured
yet again in 1998 in such specialist
magazines as Condé Naste Traveller

s regnet selten auf Anguilla. Man
sieht es an der Vegetation: schüttere
Trockenwälder, verkarstete Hügel,
spärlich bewachsene Dünen an den feinsandigen Küsten – bis auf eine Ausnahme,
einen schmalen Landstreifen zwischen dem
langgezogenen Gull Pond und dem Meer,
Maundays Bay. Dort säumt ein grünender und
blühender Tropengarten einen kilometerlangen
weißen Traumstrand.
Auch architektonisch hat die Insel am
Nordrand der kleinen Antillen nicht eben viel zu
bieten. Einige hübsche Holzhäuser aus dem vergangenen Jahrhundert in der Hauptstadt The
Valley, ansonsten die unscheinbaren, flachen,
zweckmäßig aus Stein gebauten Wohnstätten
der etwa 9 500 Einheimischen – bis auf eine
Ausnahme. Der Garten von Maundays Bay
schmückt märchenhafte Residenzen. Als hätte
sie ein Zauberer von der nordafrikanischen
Küste an den Karibikstrand versetzt, leuchtet
eine Kette von achtzehn maurischen Villen blendend weiß in der Tropensonne: Cap Juluca, ein
Eiland auf der Insel.
Dabei erscheint das luxuriöse Urlaubsparadies (auch 1998 wieder von Fachmagazinen
wie Condé Nast Traveller oder Travel & Leisure

für Anguilla sind, Sea Purselane etwa, ein genügsames dichtes Bodengewächs, das Gartenbaudirektor Kerry Knotts anstelle von wassersüchtigem Gras ansetzt, oder der TürkenhutKaktus mit seiner lustigen, Fez-ähnlichen Kopfbedeckung oder die Seagrape Trees, fleischig
belaubte, oft jahrhundertealte Bäume mit traubenartigen Früchten, aus denen die Anguillaner
Marmeladen kochen.

nature withholds, so as well as bougainvillaea, oleander and orchids,

The designer and owner of this
Moroccan-Andalusian fantasy in the
Antilles bay is Dion Friedland. Full of
energy in his mid fifties, he made a
career for himself with retail chains
back home in South Africa, including the well-known Dion Stores.
Nowadays he is regarded as a
tycoon in the international investment business. The funds of his
Magnum Group of Funds company
are market leaders, and not only in
the US and the UK.

another sphere which offers beauty,
comfort, elegance, service, intimacy,
romance, relaxation and regeneration to perfection.“ The vision became
reality.

Und dennoch, oder vielleicht gerade
wegen seiner authentischen karibischen Fassung wirkt dieses Juwel unter den Insel-Destinationen wie einem Märchen aus Tausendundeiner Nacht entsprungen. Die maurischen Villen
mit ihren weißen Bogengängen und Balustraden, Kuppeln und Türmchen zaubern eine
phantastische, poesievolle Skylinie an den glitzernden Palmen-Strand.
Schöpfer und Eigner dieser marokkanisch-andalusischen Phantasie in der Antillenbucht ist Dion Friedland. Der energiegeladene
Mittfünfziger hat in seiner südafrikanischen
Heimat mit Einzelhandelsketten, unter anderem
mit den bekannten Dion Stores, Busineßkarriere
gemacht und gilt heute als Tycoon im internationalen Investmentgeschäft. Die Fonds seiner
Firma Magnum Group of Funds stoßen nicht
nur in den USA und in Großbritannien regelmäßig auf die ersten Plätze vor.
Ein Freund aus St. Martin machte ihn vor
siebzehn Jahren auf die Schönheit von Maunday’s Bay aufmerksam. Dion, ein Mann schneller Entschlüsse, hatte eine Vision und setzte sie
unverzüglich in die Tat um. „Cap Juluca sollte
seine Besucher aus der realen Welt in eine andere entführen, in eine Sphäre, die ferne Schönheit, Komfort, Eleganz, Service, Intimität, Romantik, Erholung und Regeneration in Vollkommenheit vorführt.“ Die Vison wurde Wirklichkeit.
St. Martin, das ist die französisch-holländische Insel, die am Horizont den spektakulären
Blick über die Gärten, den gleißend weißen,
puderfeinen Strand und über das türkisfarbene
Meer begrenzt. Gäste genießen diese Aussicht
von jeder der 58 Luxus- und Juniorsuiten, der 7
Suiten und der 6 Pool Villas.
Alle Wohnlandschaften glänzen mit
Terrassen, mit großzügigen Raumschnitten, ausladenden Marmorbädern, überdimensionierten
Betten. Maurisch-karibische Motive und Materialien prägen das Innendesign, italienische
Fliesen decken die Böden, Jalousien aus brasilianischem Walnußholz halten die Wohnungen
dunkel und kühl, Aircondition und Ventilatoren

resort’s own courts with professional coaching, croquet, water sports
to your heart’s content, from water
skiing and surfing to diving and
snorkeling excursions. Or there are
day trips to unspoilt islands on
Justice, the hotel’s own yacht which
golfers like to sail in to get to the
links in Nevis or St. Martin. Incidentally, night birds will discover an
attractive nightlife and casino scene
on the island on the horizon.
Of course many visitors, especially
the regulars, shake their heads at
Patricia’s list.

enjoy what George cooks for us.“

especially when one is aware of the
sheer diversity with which the head
chef, George Reid, presents his
culinary arts in Cap Juluca.
The young chef, trained in some of
the finest establishments in Europe,
collects prizes for his imaginative
European cuisine. Those who don’t
want to be served in their own suite
have a choice of two restaurants.

Verständlicher Standpunkt, vor allem
wenn man weiß, wie abwechslungsreich Küchendirektor George Reid den kulinarischen
Auftritt Cap Julucas inszeniert. Der junge Chef,
trainiert in besten Häusern Europas, sammelt
Preise für seine phantasievolle europäisch-karibische Cuisine. Wer sie sich nicht in der Suite
servieren läßt, hat zwei Restaurants zur Auswahl. Auf halber Strecke am Strand erwartet das
George’s seine Gäste, und zwar auf zwei Ebenen,
im Rondell unterm Zeltdach direkt neben dem
Strand und oben um den großen Swimmingpool.
A la carte läßt man sich in der lockeren
Badeatmosphäre vielleicht einige von George’s
Highlights schmecken, seine Terrine mit Ziegenkäse und geräuchertem Lachs etwa oder die
mit Crayfisch und Kräutern gefüllte Hühnchenwurst. Wer es eiliger hat, dem grillt der immer
fröhliche Alfonso aus Santo Domingo zum mittäglichen Salatbuffet gerne frische Fisch- oder
Fleisch-Burger, und abends trifft man sich im
George’s regelmäßig zu westindischem Buffet
mit Calypso live oder zum Barbecue unmittelbar
vor den plätschernden Wellen.
An einem wahrhaft spektakulären Flekken lädt das Pimm’s, das elegante Gourmetrestaurant, zu Gast: Am Strandende, direkt auf
den umschäumten Korallenklippen, lassen
Speisende ihren Blick durch weiße Mauerbögen
über die ganze Skyline von Cap Juluca schweifen. Im Pimm’s ist Guy Guenego, der Spitzenkoch aus der Bretagne, Küchenchef. Gewöhnt,
in vielen Sternehäusern Frankreichs zu kochen,
bereitet Guy mit Einfällen wie Hummer-Frühlingsrolle auf Gurkensalat oder Snapper Chinese
(mit Zitronengras und frischem Ingwer) wahre
Feinschmeckerstunden.
Der frische Fang aus der See um Anguilla
ist für die Cuisiniers dabei ebenso unentbehrlich
wie die Würzpflanzen aus dem üppigen Kräutergarten. Gartenbauchef Kerry zieht hier neben
kulinarischen auch medizinische und Duftkräuter auf. Gleich nebenan entsteht ein Garten
für Pflanzenarten, die in der Karibik vom Aussterben bedroht sind, eine neue Attraktion der
Landschaftsführung, die Kerry jeden Freitag für
Gäste veranstaltet. Er erklärt die inseltypische
Vegetation des Resorts, zeigt seine Baum- und
Pflanzenschule, beantwortet Fragen zum Ökosystem des Gullponds, eines Salzwasser-Binnensees mit über sechzig Vogelarten. Die Pionierrolle, die Cap Juluca spielt, wenn es um den Bau
umweltbewahrender Resortlandschaften geht,
ist unumstritten und längst preisgekrönt. Auch
in diesem Sinn ist das Urlaubsjuwel ein ganz
besonderes Eiland auf den Karibikinseln. So hat
Juluca, der Regenbogen-Gott der alten ArawakIndianer, allen Grund, seine schützende Hand
über das Paradies der Maundays Bay zu halten.
