Directed by Hernán Findling and Oliver Kolker Spanish w/ English Subtitles Featuring an extraordinarily moving performance from Héctor Alterio and dazzling dance numbers, “Tango Glories (Fermin)” centers on psychiatrist Ezequiel Kaufman (Gaston Pauls, “Nine Queens”), who has been offered a four-year residency at a prestigious clinic. But first, he must present a clinical case study and he finds the perfect one in 85-year-old Fermin Turdera (Alterio), who expresses himself through the lyrics and titles of tango songs. As Ezequiel digs deep into the causes of this unique phenomenon, he is reintroduced by Fermin to a cultural expression he took for granted and discovers that tango is more than just dance and music...it is a way of life, with a philosophy of its own. GLORIA CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: Paulina García Gloria Award designed by Juan José Eguizábal The world discovered one of Chile’s best kept acting secrets when Paulina Garcia charmed critics and audiences alike last year at the Berlin International Film Festival with her touching and uplifting performance in Sebastian Lelio’s “Gloria,” which earned her the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Festival. “Gloria” was just one of four movies that came out last year starring this force of nature, two of them featured in this year’s Chicago Latino Film Festival: “Illiterate” and Closing Night film “I Am from Chile.” Paulina has wowed theater, television and movie audiences alike in her native country since she professionally stepped on stage for the first time in 1983. As an actress she has appeared in over 20 plays; she has also directed countless plays. She made her television debut in 1984 in the long running soap opera “Los Titeres” and her feature film debut in 2002 in “Three Nights on a Saturday”. She is currently working alongside Antonio Banderas, Rodrigo Santoro and Adriana Barraza in “Los 33” about the 33 Chilean miners trapped underground for two months after the mine they worked on collapsed. The International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago is proud to present Paulina Garcia with the Gloria Career Achievement Award in recognition of her contributions to the performing arts. The award will be presented during the Closing Night Gala, Wednesday, April 16th. Alicia (Norma Aleandro) is challenged by her students to see beyond the “official story” she so eagerly teaches at her boys’ prep school. FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 8:00 PM THE CRIME OF FATHER AMARO / EL CRIMEN DEL PADRE AMARO DRAMA Mexico / 2002 / 118 min. Directed by Carlos Carrera Academy Award Nominee / Nominada al Premio de la Academia Spanish w/ English Subtitles Declared morally offensive at the time by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Carlos Carrera’s controversial film was at the time of its release Mexico’s biggest-grossing film in its history. Gael Garcia Bernal plays Father Amaro, a young priest sent to the fictional small town of Los Reyes. There, the local priest is building a hospital paid for by the local drug lord while carrying on an affair with a restaurant owner. Another priest, Natalio, is under investigation for his supposed ties to left-wing guerrillas. Amaro soon falls for Amelia (Ana Claudia Talancon), a teenage catechism student, beginning an affair that will lead this once-idealistic priest to many other temptations. LatinoCulturalCenter.org | April 3-17, 2014 |9 ACADEMY AWARD® FILMS SATURDAY, APRIL 12, 5:30 PM THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES / EL SECRETO EN SUS OJOS THRILLER Argentina / 2009 / 129 min. Directed by Juan José Campanella Academy Award Winner / Ganadora del Premio de la Academia Spanish w/ English Subtitles Benjamin Esposito (Ricardo Darin), a retired criminal court employee, decides to write a novel based on a case that still haunts him to this day: the rape and murder of a beautiful young married woman in 1974. The novel also gives him the excuse to reconnect and maybe even rekindle his unrequited romance with senior prosecutor Irene Menendez Hastings (Soledad Villamil). Seamlessly combining elements of the police procedural with a love story, a political thriller and a melancholic reflection about memory, “The Secret in Their Eyes” is classic filmmaking at its best, featuring a hypnotic performance by Darin and a career changing one for Argentinean comedian Guillermo Francella as Sandoval, Esposito’s alcoholic but wily partner-in-crime. And from that bed and that room, he fights a long and arduous campaign against the Spanish government and the Catholic Church to end his own life with dignity. He follows her to Mendoza where both are made an offer they can’t refuse by a corrupt wine collector: to retrieve an 1845 bottle of Bordeaux from a vault. This new collaboration between Hendler and director Ariel Winograd after “My First Wedding” evokes the technical derring-do of such popular capers as the “Ocean’s Eleven” trilogy. Directed by Isabel Muñoz Spanish w/ English Subtitles Lucia is waiting for her friend to come out of the emergency room of a Mexico City hospital when she runs into ex-boyfriend Felipe, who is about to be admitted for kidney-related problems. Lucia feels the sudden urge to take care of her former beau, whom she hasn’t seen in over a decade. Felipe’s behavior towards the nurses and Lucia grows more erratic as days go by. Isabel Muñoz’s claustrophobic debut showcases the difficult, taxing and selfless choices that caretakers make when they care for someone that is ill. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, 6:30 PM / FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 9:00 PM LAST CALL / TERCERA LLAMADA COMEDY Mexico / 2013 / 92 min. Directed by Francisco Franco Spanish w/ English Subtitles All hell breaks loose when theater director Isa decides to remove the Mussolini-inspired set design for her production of Albert Camus’ “Caligula” a couple of weeks before opening night, and informs her cast and crew that she is rethinking the entire concept of the play. In no particular order she has to contend with the departure of her lead actor, the potential loss of their French financing, a neurotic costume designer and an offended diva. Isa doesn’t help matters much when she decides to cast a young woman in the lead role. Featuring Fernando Lujan, Cecilia Suarez, Rebecca Jones and, in a small cameo, Sylvia Pinal, “Last Call” is an outrageously agile comedy. FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 6:45 PM / MONDAY, APRIL 14, 8:45 PM SHE DOESN’T WANT TO SLEEP ALONE / NO QUIERO DORMIR SOLA DRAMA Mexico / 2013 / 83 min. At first, neither woman can see eye to eye but as time goes by they discover they have more in common than they first thought. Partly based on her relationship with her grandmother, Beristain explores with restraint the themes of loneliness and memory. SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 3:45 PM / SATURDAY, APRIL 12, 5:00 PM MAJESTY / REINAS DOCUMENTARY Panama / 2013 / 65 min. Directed by Ana Endara Mislov Spanish w/ English Subtitles Every woman in Panama wants to be a queen. Not a beauty queen, a queen. It’s part of a tradition that celebrates that country’s spirit and that at the same time raises some very thorny issues about womanhood. Documentary filmmaker Ana Endara Mislov introduces audiences into this rather unique Panamanian phenomenon by following three women –a pre-school girl, a supermarket cashier and a woman living in a home for the elderly– as they prepare to participate in these ceremonies. TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 6:15 PM / WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, 6:00 PM THE GOSPEL OF THE FLESH / EL EVANGELIO DE LA CARNE DRAMA Peru / 2013 / 110 min. Directed by Eduardo Mendoza de Echave Spanish w/ English Subtitles Three lives in search of redemption intersect in the streets of Lima: undercover cop Gamarra’s desperate attempts to save his wife from a terminal illness gets him into trouble; bus driver Felix wants to be accepted into a religious sect after his involvement in a tragic traffic accident; and imperiled soccer club leader Narciso tries to secure his younger brother’s release from prison. “The Gospel of the Flesh” does for Lima what “Amores Perros” did for Mexico City: to present a complex portrait of a socially and financially precarious world. SUNDAY, APRIL 6, 8:45 PM / TUESDAY, APRIL 8, 6:30 PM I’M STILL (KACHKANIRAQMI) / SIGO SIENDO (KACHKANIRAQMI) DOCUMENTARY Peru / 2012 / 110 min. Directed by Javier Corcuera Spanish w/ English Subtitles Javier Corcuera’s documentary is more than a celebration of Peru’s rich musical heritage. Through these musicians’ personal stories (some of them filmed for the first time) and their music, Corcuera explores issues of identity and nationality. Divided in three parts –Lima, Ayacucho and the Amazon– “I’m Still (Kachkaniraqmi)” captures the country’s most beautiful and distant spots without turning its back to some of its most pressing social and economic problems. He’s left speechless when he’s hit in the neck by what appears to be a stray bullet. Convinced that someone is out to get him, Constantino seeks the help of a corrupt police officer to find out who may have ordered the hit. Coproduced by Carlos Reygadas (“Post Tenebras Lux”), “The Mute” slyly mixes dark comedy with elements of the police procedural and the paranoid movie thrillers of the 70s. SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 4:00 PM / SUNDAY, APRIL 6, 6:00 PM ROCK N’ ROLL ‘68 / ROCANROL ‘68 COMEDY Peru / 2013 / 97 min. Directed by Gonzalo Benavente Secco Spanish w/ English Subtitles It’s one last hurrah for aspiring filmmaker Manolo, Casanova wannabe Bobby and rock n’ roll fan Guille before they head off to college- one last chance to meet girls, listen to some music and have some fun. But Manolo’s world turns topsy-turvy when he meets the freewheeling Emma, getting into one mess after another as he tries to impress her. Gonzalo Benavente’s debut film is both a charming teen comedy and a heartfelt tribute to the psychedelic/garage rock bands that dominated Peru’s airwaves in the late 60s. MONDAY, APRIL 7, 6:00 PM / TUESDAY, APRIL 8, 8:30 PM TRIP TO TIMBUKTU / VIAJE A TOMBUCTÚ DRAMA Peru / 2013 / 100 min. Directed by Rossana Díaz Costa Spanish w/ English Subtitles Ana and Lucho’s love story started when they were two little kids in 1970s Peru but it wouldn’t blossom until the violent 80s, when Sendero Luminoso’s attacks and the military’s response sent the country into a bloody spiral. For both teens and their best friends, the only way to survive is by imagining what it would be like to live in a distant, foreign land, a thought that some put into action as they migrate to escape the violence. Díaz Costa’s deeply personal portrait of this era stands as a metaphor for the loss of innocence. SATURDAY, APRIL 12, 3:45 PM / SUNDAY, APRIL 13, 3:30 PM CESAR’S LAST FAST DOCUMENTARY USA / 2013 / 100 min. Directed by Richard Ray Perez, Lorena Parlee English An excellent companion film to the recently released biopic about the legendary labor leader directed by Diego Luna, this documentary is built around Cesar Chavez’s final act of protest: a 36-day water-only hunger strike to draw attention to the horrific effects of unfettered pesticide use on farms and how they affected workers, their families and their communities. Built around never-before-seen footage of the fast, and interviews with friends, family and supporters, “Cesar’s Last Fast” paints a unique portrait of one of America’s most enduring labor icons. The unexpected return of Glenda, a former acquaintance, to the city sets up a series of events that end up with both Tomas and Glenda alone in a hospital. Really alone. There is no one walking the hospital’s corridors or the city’s streets. It’s as if they had stepped into a twilight zone of their own. Realmente solos.
