GENERAL DIRECTOR’s
MESSAGE
The Instituto Politécnico Nacional of
Mexico is a public Higher Education
Institution from the Mexican State with a
thoroughly technological vocation. From
science to engineering, social sciences to
health sciences and business to advanced
technologies, our focus is set on an
academic offer of quality, innovative and
according to the actual needs of society.
79
In this new world more connected and
interdependent with fast growing economies and common challenges for a sustainable
future, it is IPN’s commitment to form highly skilled students whose knowledge and
vision transcend borders.
In this endeavor, I do believe that the internationalization of higher education will
contribute to the enrichment of IPN’s main activities and therefore to reinforce its mission
vis-à-vis the global society.
We are aware that in order to gain more international experience and recognition in the
global scenario, IPN should be open to new ideas, people and projects; therefore, IPN
is going one step beyond looking for new opportunities to develope cooperation actions
such as student exchange, double degree programs, research stays, joint research and
educational projects with strategic partners.
In the following pages, let me give you a general overview of IPN’s facts and features. We
really hope you will find areas of opportunity for future cooperation.
Sincerely,
Enrique Fernández Fassnacht (Ph.D)
General Director

IPN was created from the dreams of
distinguished mexicans devoted to forge
a Nation more prosperous, fair and
democratic. People like Lázaro Cárdenas
del Río, Juan de Dios Bátiz Paredes and
Luis Enrique Erro, among many others,
who conceived the IPN as an engine
for the development of the nation and a
space to grow in justice; supporting the
industrialization process of the country
and giving education to people from all
social classes, specially the less favored.
MIXED

The IPN was founded in 1936, nowadays
it is considered as the most important
public institution of technological higher
education in Mexico. More than seven

INDUSTRIAL PARTNERS
The IPN fosters extensive activities oriented to close the gap with the industry and
the productive sector. The IPN has three enterprise support units oriented to promote
transfer of knowledge and technology, innovative technologies, enterprise incubation,
patent protection and development of spin off’s:
The IPN has:
CIEBT: The Center for Technological Base Enterprise Incubation creates mechanisms
to promote the establishment and development of new technological business by
enterpreneurs.
ààSport facilities such as stadiums, playing fields, courts, swimming pools, gyms and
fitness rooms.
UPDCE: The Polytechnic Unit for Enterprise Development and Competitiveness
promotes transfer of knowledge and technology, as well as technological innovation.
Technopoli: The Polytechnic Unit for Technological Development offers guest companies
space, research support, infrastructure, services, technological, financial and marketing
advice.
22
ààMore than 1300 Laboratories and 150 workshops distributed in its schools and
research centers.
àà75 libraries comprising an extensive network throughout the country with an on-line
shared platform.
ààThe Health Service Center provides services to IPN community.
23
Our research centers and schools have close relationships with local industry,
international, medium and small enterprises; our students participate on industrial
internships.
Some of our industrial partners are:
FACILITIES
FACILITIES
ààThe National Library of Science and Technology “Ing Víctor Bravo Ahuja”, the main
library of IPN and one of the largest of its kind in the country.
ààTwo Foreign Language Learning Centers for English, French, German, Italian, Russian,
Japanese, Portuguese and Chinese courses; Spanish courses for foreign students
are also offered.
ààThe “Tezozómoc” Museum of Science and Technology to experience science in action
and for diffusion of science and technology.
24
25
ààThe Planetarium “Luis Enrique Erro”, the first planetarium in Latin America, offers
audiovisual programs, exhibitions, conferences and workshops, with topics related to
astronomy, and information of interest to the public.
ààThe IPN TV Channel 11 open broadcast (www.canalonce.mx) has provided for more
than 50 years a great variety of programs: scientific and cultural documentaries,
concerts, news, movies, series, discussion forum and entertainment. It is the first
educational and cultural TV channel in Latin America supporting the diffusion of IPN’s
academic activities.
ààThe Cultural Center “Jaime Torres Bodet” takes stage for performing arts; it is also
ideal for art exhibitions, music concerts, fairs and meetings. The IPN Symphonic
Orchestra (OSIPN) performs regularly in this Center.
ààThe Residence for visiting researchers host our visitors and it is located besides the
Zacatenco campus.
