Our First Reading today gives us a glimpse of the “vocation story” of the prophet Amos. The priest Amaziah was not very interested in having this prophet around; he told Amos to go earn his bread elsewhere. Amos uses this opportunity to testify to the Lord’s call in his life. Amos did not take up prophecy as a professional job or a hobby; rather, the Lord called him from his normal life to speak the word of God to Israel. Amos was only being obedient to the Lord who called him. Likewise, the Apostles whom Jesus sends out two by two in the Gospel did not set themselves up as representatives of Jesus. They became representatives of Jesus through a call, through the choice of Jesus. These Twelve Apostles go forward in confidence because of the calling of Jesus. By trade, they were fishermen, tax collectors, even political activists (Simon the Zealot). None of these men set out in the morning to make themselves Apostles. But one day it happened: Jesus came up to them and said “Follow me!” And they left everything and followed Him. There was something about Jesus that convinced them, that persuaded them that it was worth it leave everything behind for Him. Even during Jesus’ life, many people had their first encounter with Jesus, not by meeting Jesus but by meeting His representative. We can imagine the way these Apostles spoke about the man who had changed their life. Something in the witness, the representative, made people want to meet the Master. And this has continued throughout the history of the Church. Jesus is known to us because someone has been a convincing witness, someone spoke to us after having been changed by Christ. And we believed them! The call to discipleship and the work of promoting vocations happens in the same way. We lend our voice to Christ, so that today people can here the call, “Follow me!” Do we know a young man who may have a vocation to the priesthood? Have we ever told him? Do we know a young woman who shows signs of a call to consecrate her life completely to the Lord? Have we ever told her? I’d like to share a prayer with you this week, and ask you to share this prayer with a young person. It is a great way to plant the seed of a vocation to the priesthood or consecrated life in the Church. Lord Jesus, I believe that you have created me for a special mission. From the moment I was conceived in my mother’s womb, you have been preparing my path to Heaven. Lord, show me your will for my life. Help me to trust you, no matter the cost. Help me to believe that I will be happiest in doing your will. Give me the grace to say yes to what you ask of me today, so that I can say yes to my vocation when it becomes clear to me. I make this prayer through Christ our Lord, Amen. Music: Jarrod Townsend © 2015 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Text: Excerpts from the English Translation of The Roman Missal © 2010 ICEL. Music: Steve Angrisano “Mass of a Joyful Heart” © 1997 OCP Publications The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Though our senses fail, Your graces still prevail, and we become the love that we receive. Bread of life, Bread of life. Those who eat this bread shall live and never die. Bread of life, Bread of life. Your true presence in this holy sacrifice. Bread of life. Unworthy though we are, You feed the hungry heart with bread come down from heaven above. And like a grain of wheat, we fall down at Your feet, dying here with You. Oh, let us rise! Your faithfulness revealed in this covenant You’ve sealed with Your very body and Your blood. Come, claim your bride again with love that cannot end, for what God joins no one can divide.
