The new facility was designed and built with a great deal of feedback from our drivers, maintenance staff and office staff. Drivers now have a paved yard, covered fueling area, a comfortable driver’s lounge and showers. Mechanics have a very bright, clean and well laid-out maintenance facility with proper lunch and shower areas. Our office employees now have well-designed functional work areas with common meeting areas for maximum production in the workplace. All staff members, including drivers and mechanics, now have access to our new fitness center to keep them healthy and happy. This new facility is a nice addition to our existing network of great facilities across Canada and the US. In May we held a corporate training session in Dartmouth, NS with employees from nearly all of our terminals and branded companies attending. It was a great way to build interpersonal relationships among members of our various divisions and share valuable ideas on the future of the company. The two main training themes were communication and teamwork. These themes will be the focus of additional training activities across the country throughout the year. Our expectations are that all office staff, maintenance staff and driving staff will touch on these training themes this fiscal year. Communication and teamwork are key educational building blocks for the “Continuous Improvement” management philosophy of the Seaboard Transport Group. I would like to thank all employees who helped us prepare for our recent audits. In February we successfully completed our corporate ISO 9001:2008 audit which led to our recertification in March. In addition, we successfully completed our Chartis Insurance audits for our Wiebe and Harmac divisions. Harmac also successfully completed an Esso Global Audit and Shell Global Assessment in recent months. I’d like to take this opportunity to send a big thank you to all my co-workers who helped support me on March 26th by wearing a purple ribbon in support of Children’s Epilepsy - a cause that I am dearly devoted to. Each year an average of 15,500 people learn they have epilepsy; 44% are children below the age of 5. So once again, THANK YOU. Cheryl Richards Safety and Compliance Michel Croisetière It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Michel Croisetière, a member of our Montreal Petroleum team, in May of this year. Michel started working for Seaboard on March 24th, 2009 as a petroleum company driver and eventually became a dedicated Jet fuel driver, running for Ultramar and Shell from Montreal to Ottawa. Michel was an ambassador of our company both with customers and co-workers who exemplified the type of drivers we have in our company. He was not just a co-worker, he was a friend. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. France Thibodeau Montreal Petroleum Operations Seaboard Transport Group Scholarship Program In 2011 we had the pleasure of introducing the Seaboard Transport Group Scholarship Program. Vice President - Sales Summer 2013 Volunteer Spotlight: Ron and Mary Wiebe Employment Equity Update – Question and Answer Session: On April 13th Mary and I traveled to Kenya along with 16 other Albertans on a learning tour with MCC (Mennonite central Committee). MCC is an NGO that operates in about 60 countries throughout the world, started in 1920 MCC provides relief and humanitarian aid to the world’s poorest people. Our group helped construct a sand dam. A sand dam is a concrete wall across a river bed that only has water during the rainy season. The dam traps the sand behind the wall as the water flows over top, after the rains stop and the bed dries up, there is usually about 8 or 10 feet of pure sand saturated with 40% water trapped behind this wall. This provides water for 1100 families and their animals until the next rains come. People in rural Kenya are very poor but have hope for a better life for their children. The biggest impact on me is how much time of every day the Kenyans spend gathering water, the resource we take so for granted. This year we are proud to say we completed our employment equity reporting four months early! Ron Wiebe Director of Business Development & Fleet Q. What does this mean? A. This means that our payroll and human resources staff are diligently working to ensure their surveys are completed upon hire. This allows us to accurately report our Employment Equity numbers in a timely fashion. We are also able to show the Federal Government the commitment we have to the employment equity program. Q. How do our numbers compare to last year? A. In 2012 we had five members from a designated group promoted which is a significant increase from 2011. We were also able to report that there were 16 employees hired who selfidentified as a member of a visible minority. Q. What does this mean for Seaboard Transport Group of Companies? A. This means that we are following our Employment Equity Plan of hiring a more diverse workforce through new recruiting efforts, internal promotions and an overall commitment to creating an inclusive workplace. Q. What are the next steps in Employment Equity? A. Our main focus for 2013 is to continue providing human resources training to all managers and to continue adhering to our Employment Equity Plan. Our HR Strategy Team will continue to meet regularly to review job descriptions, to ensure they are inclusive and not creating any barriers to members of the Employment Equity target groups. Kyla Chamberlaine Human Resources Generalist Seaboard Welcomes R & G Transport On July 1, 2013, Seaboard Liquid Carriers Limited acquired R & G Transport, based in Regina, SK. This purchase gives Seaboard a solid presence in the growing Saskatchewan marketplace and complements its current branded operations in BC and Alberta with the Mantei’s and Wiebe operating groups. Welcome to the Seaboard Team! Mark Shannon President 5 THE HEADLINER It’s Your Back! The information provided here is intended only to create an awareness relating to a possible issue that you MAY encounter with your back. Individuals that experience a back pain issue regularly should consult their physician. Most minor herniations heal within several weeks. Antiinflammatory treatments for pain associated with disc herniation, protrusion, bulge, or disc tear are generally effective. Severe herniations may not heal of their own accord and may require surgical intervention. Speaking from personal experience over the past months – and I am sure that some readers can relate – back pain – or back discomfort – has to be one of the most aggravating, and at times; frustrating; conditions to deal with. At this time, it appears that I narrowly escaped surgery and given an opportunity to prevent such intervention. Not to say I am not a future potential candidate – but I will do my part to avoid this. The spinal column connecting to the hips and then subsequently to the legs via tendons, muscles, nerves, etc.; provides a great venue and/or opportunity for something to go wrong, particularly during the aging process; something that we are all experiencing. Degenerative “conditions” may also be a result of a few things. • Hereditary ( Genes that may have been passed on ) • Life styles ( Active vs Inactive ) • Trauma ( Accident or Injury ) • Ergonomics ( Work conditions, tasks, repetition ) Disc Herniation or more commonly called a slipped disc (this term is not medically accurate as the spinal discs are fixed in position between the vertebrae and cannot “slip”) is a medical condition affecting the spine due to trauma, lifting injuries, or idiopathic (unknown) causes, in which a tear in the outer, fibrous ring of an intervertebral disc allowing the soft, central portion to bulge out beyond the damaged outer rings. Disc herniations are normally a further development of a previously existing disc “protrusion”, a condition in which the outermost layers are still intact, but can bulge when the disc is under pressure. Corporate GoodLife Membership In April 2012 we launched a partnership with GoodLife Fitness Clubs across Canada to offer all employees and Owner Operators a discounted membership rate. Physical activity is an important part of our employee’s overall health and we are pleased to assist in making it more affordable to all members of our organization. This initiative is part of our corporate mandate to assist our employees in improving their overall health and wellness. The discounted membership rate is $35.42 plus applicable provincial taxes and is deducted directly through Payroll. Employees and Owner Operators looking to sign-up can contact: Kyla Chamberlaine – Atlantic/Central Canada HR@seaboard.acl.ca 902-468-4447, Ext. 1268 Jodie Barron – Western Canada jbarron@seaboard.ca 403-531-1600, Ext. 168 6 Conditions such as this are prevalent in truck driving, mechanic work, construction, logging, etc, however, if the ergonomics are not correct – it may even be present in office workers. It has been described to me by a surgeon that the spine (and everything attached) is much like a new tire. From birth – and as we start rolling – we start wearing. How we maintain the tire will ultimately determine the life that we get from it. Overinflated? (Too much weight) The ratio is 12-1. For each 1 pound over our ideal weight we add 12 pounds expectation for our spine to carry. 20 lbs will equate to 240 lbs that we expect our spine to carry. Environmental Usage (Repetitive motion, sitting, bending, turning, lifting) for periods of time add trauma and stress on the spine. So please. Take time for your back. Take appropriate breaks if you are driving. Stretch your back properly. Know the proper lifting techniques. There are many back strengthening exercises available – but please consult your physician prior to doing so if you have any type of pre-existing condition or issue. Kyla Chamberlaine Human Resources Generalist The Healthy Driver Pilot Program It is no secret that our drivers and owner/operators face a number of challenges to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Your work schedules and stopping for meals on the road can make it difficult to maintain a well-balanced diet and get regular exercise. When drivers are educated on proper eating habits and the benefits of exercise, you make healthier meal/snack choices. This allows you to lose weight, feel better and sleep better. Through our management of the disability claims for our driving staff across the country, we see first-hand how claims are impacted by the overall health of owner/operators and company drivers. We continue to see that smokers and overweight individuals are taking 2-3 times longer to get back to work for the same injuries as non-smokers and healthier individuals. This has a number of negative impacts on both our drivers and the company, including: • Lost revenue for our driving staff • Higher premiums for owner/operators worker’s compensation insurance premiums • Higher group benefit plans cost We are now accepting applications to The Healthy Driver Pilot Program: We are looking for 2 individuals (company drivers or owner/ operators) who are serious about losing weight and getting healthier to participate in the program. The Pilot is a 13 week weight management program sponsored by NAL Insurance. Highlights of the program include: • One-on-one weight management coaching via web conferencing or phone with a registered Dietician and Health Coach • Drivers can participate in sessions from the cab of your truck or home • Learn healthier eating habits for lifelong weight-loss results • Customized program specifically for a trucker’s lifestyle • Receive food guides, recipes, meal plans and other resources free of cost Participation in the pilot program is free. The program will begin August 1st, 2013. To apply, please send your name, contact information and a short explanation of your reasons for wanting to participate in the program to HR@seaboard.acl.ca. All information provided by the employee to the Dietician and/or Health Coach will remain confidential. Summer 2013 13 THE HEADLINER Train the Trainer Shown here are the most recent graduates of the corporate sponsored Seaboard Transport HSE Leadership Training program held at the new facility in Dartmouth, NS on May 28th and 29th 2013. The program was initially designed for HSE staff and driver trainers; however, it was identified last year that a few changes to the format would add value by extending this program to all employees that are in leadership position. The program covers modules such as the fundamentals of safety, communication and listening, understanding of the leadership role, addressing adversity, presentation skills, incident investigation – contributors and root causes, and behavioral assessments; just to name a few. Retirement Announcements Raymond Wiebe It is with regret that I make this announcement; Raymond Wiebe has tendered his resignation effective May 17, 2013. Raymond has been an integral part of Wiebe Transport for over 26 years, his dedication, industry knowledge, work ethic as well as numerous other contributions will be dearly missed. Raymond’s attention to detail and commitment to the business has been a huge asset to us over the years. This program has run for the last year with 3 stages represented by various divisions across Canada. It provides a great venue for interaction, sharing of ideas and experiences, and allows feedback for continuous improvement. I have had the privileged and pleasure of working alongside of Raymond for all these years. He has worn many hats over his career including managing the shop, managing the tire program for the fleet as well as managing the rail Transload facility and warehouse for the past 10 years. I knew when we sold the business 5 years ago that this day would eventually come; I have been blessed to work together with my brothers and family for so many years and for that I am grateful. A retirement function will be planned at a later date. The next program is expected to start up shortly after Labor Day weekend and extend to the spring of 2014. If you have an interest in this program, please discuss with your supervisor for more information and endorsement. The invitation is extended to all brands and all operating orbits. We will be managing through this transition over the next few months as we search for a suitable candidate to take on this role; we also see opportunity to grow the materials-handling side of the business and will be actively pursuing existing and new customers. Please join me in congratulating these recent graduates.
